  1. QUOTE(3E8 @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 06:03 PM) It depends who the man is that is pitching every fifth day. In your head it doesn't make sense that someone who plays 30 games could contribute as much as someone who plays five times that amount, but I think they can. For example, if we were to land Schmidt somehow, his value to this team might be greater than that of Chavez. They both had 19 win shares in 2004. But a quality pitcher might be a greater upgrade over injured Duque/swingman/? than Chavez would be over Crede. Good point, I wasn't really thinking about it like that. I'd think about Schmidt vs. Chavez, but Chavez vs. Burnett is no comparison IMO. Burnett's only pitched above 200 innings once in his career, and is a career ERA+ of 109. A half season of Burnett, to me, is not worth five years of Brandon McCarthy + five years of Ryan Sweeney.
  2. If we're gonna give up B-Mac and one of our top two OF'ers (Sweeney or Anderson), we might as well be looking at getting Chavez from the A's rather than Burnett. An everyday position player is going to help this team (in the long run) a whole lot more than a guy who pitches every fifth day. Not trying to take anything away from Burnett, but if you're giving up two of your top prospects, go the extra mile and do what it takes to get Chavez.
  3. Dam, I respect your points -- disagree with some of them, but respect them. I guess I'm not as confident as you are as far as McCarthy/Hermy/Cotts filling in, even if it's just for a start -- especially with Cotts. I didn't follow his minor league career, but this is the best I've ever seen him pitch. He has been dominant for a month or so now, and I don't want to touch that one bit. I know I'm restating it, but I'm not as comfortable as you are with the guys we've talked about filling in, even if it is for a start.
  4. QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 02:50 AM) I remember another "future closer" about 15 years ago by the name of Curt Schilling. Anyone know what happened to him? Fine. We'll explore that down the road. Why mess with what he's doing now? All that does is weaken our 'pen, and we'd have to stretch out Cotts -- which would take at least a month, right? Same goes for Hermy. He could help us out, but why mess with the bullpen? McCarthy -- I personally don't think he's ready. His fastball is straighter than Felix Diaz', and he's not throwing his changeup very much. I don't feel very confident handing him the ball in a pennant race. And El Duque, I don't see how it affects him. If El Duque goes down, Lilly fills in. If he can only throw four-five innings, Lilly gives you the two-three that a "normal" starter would give you, if more, then that's fine too. I'm not suggesting that they give up a top flight guy for Lilly, but one or two of C+ - B- (a little above average, in other words) prospects for him and I do it.
  5. I agree completely with Jim's post. Going for the jugular is one thing, and you're kidding yourself if you think that Williams isn't going to do every in his power to do that. But that doesn't mean do something stupid. The guys you mentioned -- Baez, Guardado -- would adding either of those guys make us that much better than getting a guy like Lilly? You make it seem like we'd be getting an Eric Gagne back. Both are good, but neither are spectacular to the point that they'd make us clear cut AL champs -- at least, IMO.
  6. QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 01:18 AM) It's also retarded to assume a player will automatically return to his norm throughout the course of a season (there are always variations, whether from injury or a number of other reasons). So regardless of what you may think of Lilly going forward, at this point he's no better than an inexperienced McCarthy or El Duque missing an arm. What's the point of making a move and HOPING that it may work out? Wouldn't you want a sure thing? It's retarted to think a player will return to his norms? Really? Then, if the opportunity came up to trade Joe Borchard and Luis Vizcaino for Aubrey Huff, should we not do it 'cause he's only hitting .248? I personally think it's more retarted (sp?) to judge a player off of 15 starts rather than the rest of his career. And if he is injured --which he could be -- then of course I'm not suggesting we trade for him. But, didn't he just throw a seven inning, 10 K game? That doesn't seem like an injured guy to me. Big sqwert, where else are we supposed to upgrade? The only spot really is bullpen, or another starter (third-base, too). And (most likely) the price is very high for a SP. Plus, I can't think that the organization has already given up on El Duque. When he pitched healthy, he pitched well for where he's at in the rotation -- the fourth spot.
  7. Some of the years that Belle had were absolutely awesome. He's the guy who had 50+ homers and 50+ doubles in a season, right? It seems his numbers get overlooked, he was really, really good...
  8. QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 01:07 AM) Christ guys, Lilly has a 6.00+ ERA, why are we even talking about him? I was hoping his latest s***-tastic start would put it to rest, but guess not. Did you read the first line of my post at all? Sheesh, I guess 15 starts makes a f***ing career...
  9. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 11:22 PM) Lilly: vs. Left: .358 vs. Right: .252 Day: 10.03 Night: 5.31 Current Month: 3.46 :puke Those are stats from this year. Composed of what, 15-20 starts? Mercy... Off the top of my head, Lilly is right around a career 4.00 ERA pitcher. His ERA+ has been right around league average. For the right price, he's the guy this team needs. Cheat and Jim (among others) have been calling it for months, we need a swingman who can fill in for the fifth starter's role, and help us in the 'pen.
  10. I can't ever play in those "play money" rooms. People play hands that you normally wouldn't play if you were playing for real money. I've toned down my poker playing from the school year, but I still play occasionally. Once I'm 18, though, Indian reservations, here I come!
  11. Yet another year in which I miss the whole series at the Cell. I'll be at Indiana University this weekend, basketball camp/tourney. Hopefully I can catch some of the games on WGN on my portable TV, but I'm not counting on it. Bring me home two, preferably all three, fellas.
  12. QUOTE(danman31 @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 03:59 AM) Carlos Lee is a dumb, poor fielding baseball player. People here think he is something spectacular. I was begging the Sox to get rid of him. Podsednik is very arguably the most valuable hitter on this team. Speaking from a defensive standpoint, Podsednik is about as bad as Lee. IMHO, of course.
  13. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 03:08 AM) you lose a little defense? Willie's range is >>>> Iguchi's other than that diving play the last game Iguchi's range hasnt been near Willie's... yes you lose some power but do we really need all that power from our #2 hole especially if Clee is still in the lineup. BTW i still like this current team because we are obviously the best team in baseball right now but im just discussing the trade which i think we got ripped off. Yes, Harris does have a ton more range, but -- IMO, not to make up for the lost SLG% points. And, also IMO, you're nuts if you think otherwise. EDIT: And, by think otherwise, I'm talking strictly about Harris range vs. Iguchi's more extra-base hits. Personally, I wasn't a huge fan of the trade either, but I can't complain, so I won't.
  14. QUOTE(Soxnbears01 @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 03:54 AM) i got my first job between soph-jr. year. It sucks, just apply everywhere, you have to get lucky someplace, that's the jist of it. I might have finally found a summer job this summer, working in some weird, small warehouse by my house, we'll see. I don't think I want to work in a food place; too much talking to the customer. There's a Menards by my house, I think I'll apply there. A few months ago, Best Buy was taking applications for people in stock... should've applied there.
  15. Yellow Submarine and A Day in the Life.
  16. I have to get a job sometime later this summer. Late July, early August. Thinking about where to apply at.
  17. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 02:29 AM) we might of not signed all of them... but im guessing AJ still and El Duque... but probably not Tadahito.... and really I dont think if you let Willie start everyday there would be a huge drop off...dont get me wrong there would be a drop off but not as big as some of you would like to think. Btw my reasoning for this is we supposedly still have money so than that would be for El Duque and than Viz makes about as much if not more than AJ I think and willie is getting paid a lot less than Tadahito. Even as one of Harris' biggest backers, you lose at least .125 SLG% points from the switch. OBP would probably be about equal, and you lose a little defense, but sure not enough to make up for the SLG% points lost...
  18. Go to a game and just listen to the songs she plays for the other team's players. I went to the game Wednesday and payed close attention to it, and I got some good laughs. Like, for David DeJesus, she played "Jesus is just alright for me", and for John Buck, she played "Money" (I think that's the name of the song, but not positive). For Graffanino, each time he was at the plate, she played an Italian sounding song. For Jermaine Dye, one time she played "Live or Let Die". Along with being an awesome organist, listen to the songs she plays that go with the certain players. She's extremely clever.
  19. QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 08:20 PM) Mike North doesn't know jack s*** about sports period...it was just hilarious watching him badger Tallon about Wirtz and Pully and you could tell Tallon was getting pissed because he asked North..."What's your problem man?" That's the thing, though. I don't care about Wirtz/Pully, I want to know something about the Hawks prospects. I watched/heard two interviews with Tallon, and all of the questions went along the lines of -- "Do You think the lockout will end?" -- and -- "Will Pulford still be pulling the strings?". I don't care about that stuff. I'd like to know how a guy like Dustin Byfuglian is doing, Cam Barker, etc etc. North really sucks at those interviews...
  20. First, for the person who said that the Dodger GM is out at the end of the year, are you nuts? They made the playoffs last year, and outside of a rash of injuries, they were doing pretty well this year too. Next, I agree with Jim and beck. Lilly would be a nice pickup, a swingman, ala Glendon Rusch on the Northside. Over his career, he has a career ERA+ of 101, so he's about an average pitcher, which is what a team like the Sox could use as that 5th/6th starter type. Plus, it might just move Vizcaino out of the bullpen, which would definitely be a plus. I've always liked guys who can make the ball move so much, and Lilly has that really nice big, bending curve. That's not any more reason to get him or anything, I'd just like to see him in a Sox uni -- of course, if it doesn't cost a whole lot. Beck already mentioned it, but there's also the possibility of getting draft picks at the end of the year, too, which would be a nice comp for losing a guy like .
  21. What would a 3B-man thread be without a Vinny Castilla update? Vinny Castilla - .719 OPS Joe Crede - .727 OPS Umm... Umm... Umm...
  22. Does anyone know if/where I can find cheap tix for tomorrow's game against KC? It's one of the few games I can make it out to till mid-July, so it'd be nice if it didn't have to be for full price...
  23. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 02:54 AM) Jon Garland has matched a career high for wins in a season Season's not even half over yet either. I love that f***in guy. I love this team. I want to marry them. Seriously. Ah, one day this offseason, we gots to go back and look at the few of us who were in Garland's corner for the longhaul. Beautiful seeing him pitch so well. Keep the walks down, and he'll be Ok. I'm thinking about makin' it out to the Sox game tomorrow. Go get 'em, Buehrle!
  24. This is the best I've ever seen Crede hitting. He's doing a really nice job. Pablo Ozuna is unbelievably unbelievable.
  25. Wow -- that's great news. Sutter didn't really ever have a grasp on the youngsters, especially Arny, and his system really wasn't very innovative. Let's go, let's get this new CBA in place, and go from there. I'm excited as hell!
