  1. Am I the only one who cracks up every time they show that Southwest Airlines commercial, with everyone talking/learning the Boston accent?
  2. QUOTE(daa84 @ Mar 31, 2005 -> 08:17 PM) Said he likes the twins alot, twins will win the division they have the best starting pitching, and good young core (mauer and morneau) White Sox: says he talked to someone who he said thinks the sox will win the division. Hes not sure about the defense and teh starting pitching, but he thinks they need to prove alot of things. mentions the homers at the cell, and the fact that the sox got away from a power team. he doesnt think the sox are as good defensively as they were last year. so essentially, it was a regurgitation of all the info that the rest of the national media is saying It was a fair analysis. Why should we be picked over the Twins? They have a better bullpen, a Cy Young pitcher (though not necessarily a better staff), and they have guys that makes most teams drool over having in Morneau and Mauer. Not to mention they've won the division three years running... What he said was fair -- if things go right, the Sox -- as well as the Indians -- can take the division. But the Twins are a pretty safe bet. That doesn't mean they'll win it, but as far as people making their picks, they're the safest bet.
  3. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Mar 31, 2005 -> 07:13 PM) Another meaningless end of spring trade. You never know. That Braves pitching coach seems to always turn water into wine, maybe he can make Sosa into a stud-reliever... (Sosa throws 100+, right?)
  4. Anyone know what time do the lots open? 12:00?
  5. QUOTE(JimH @ Mar 31, 2005 -> 04:20 AM) Well, the Score was wrong. Just reported on Comcast Sports Net: Ben Davis cleared waivers and now has 10 days whether to decide to report to Charlotte. If he does, he will collect the $1 million salary. If he refuses, he can become a free agent but he forfeits the contract, i.e. he will not be paid the $1 million. Guillen was just interviewed and he said Reinsdorf agreed with the baseball people and was willing to pay the salary to keep him in the organization vs. dumping him in a trade and eating a small portion of the salary. Guillen says they've talked to Davis, saying they want him in the organization, they will need him at some point, etc. It's now up to Davis to either accept the assignment or become a free agent. Jim -- can we trust any radio source anymore? ESPN 1000: "Ben will be traded by day's end!" The Score: "Ben Davis has been optioned to Charlotte!" Wrong. Wrong.
  6. Hammerhead, are you in a keeper league? I wouldn't expect a whole lot from any of Blanton/Meyer/Haren this year, but next year, all three should have a shot to shine... And, if you can grab Rich Harden in a league, I definitely recommend (sp) doing so.
  7. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Mar 31, 2005 -> 02:59 AM) Shows that Freddy was a very solid pitcher last year, Mark Buehrle has been very solid his entire career, Jon Garland is actually a slightly above average pitcher(barely), and that Pedro Martinez is god...or a really good pitcher - not sure which. If the Sox hadn't traded for Contreras last year, I would have loved for them to give some big bucks to Pedro. I know that's a dream thought, but he's so good...
  8. QUOTE(Yossarian @ Mar 31, 2005 -> 02:29 AM) For all I know almost everyone here has me on ignore. If Crede can hit somewhere in the vicinity on .271 with a little power, then I'll definitely take it. Yoss -- you certainly aren't on my ignore. We need more objective people such as yourself on the board...
  9. ERA+ is league adjusted ERA -- I dunno if this is what you're looking for, but if I'm not mistaken, this is a way to compare all pitchers, AL and NL, on an equal basis. (So it takes into account park factors -- just because a pitcher has a bad ERA pitching in Colorado won't mean his ERA+ is terrible): Garcia's career ERA+ is 114 (100 is AVG). His career high is 138, and his career low is 96. For reference, Mark Buehrle has a career 125 ERA+, Jon Garland has a career 101 ERA+, and Pedro Martinez has a career 167. I dunno why I picked those three names, just thought it was a good reference point...
  10. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Mar 31, 2005 -> 12:23 AM) Hitting Indians : Should lead the ALC in BA Fielding Twins : Everyone has IF changes in 05, but Twins traditionally play better D. Starters Twins : Mays looks like he's back. Bullpen Twins : The ChiSox have closed the gap but edge to Nathan. Team Twins : The team win the best rotation & pen usually is a division winner. Runner Ups: Hitting ChiSox : Should lead the ALC in R Fielding ChiSox : Closed the gap on the Twins Starters ChiSox : Should prove to be 2nd best rot in div Bullpen ChiSox : Twins have more dominant pen, ChiSox have healthiest & most experienced Team ChiSox : Leading all runner up categories there should be no doubt Pitching & D wise I believe the ChiSox have done enough to close the gap with the Twins. Getting an edge on the ALC is crucial. So, the Sox will score more runs, yet the Indians have a better offense? (FWIW, I think the Indians offense will be better than the Sox offense -- just, that logic doesn't make a whole lot of sense...)
  11. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 30, 2005 -> 10:08 PM) It doesn't make sense to pay Davis $1 million when Pierzynski will likely get almost 500 at bats this season. Yorvit Torrealba, who was AJ's backup on the Giants last year, only had 172 at bats last season. Davis had 193 at bats last season but he likely wouldn't get that many this season with AJ on board. Well, while we're at it (trading overpaid bench players), maybe we can find someone who'll take G-H-Civic's favorite player...
  12. QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Mar 30, 2005 -> 09:48 PM) I watched him QB several games at Arkansas, I was just amazed at his athleticism for such a big guy. He would just take off running and the LB's would be in shock seeing him blow past them. I don't know how well he can catch the ball, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to snatch him up in the 3rd-4th round to see what you can make of him. Listening to Sportcenter last night, Mortenson seems to think Jones might have improved his stock to that of a late-first round pick, if not that -- then a definite second round pick. Is he really that good?
  13. Sorry to interupt the conversation, but I really hope that Bruuuuuuuuuce isn't just yankin' all of our (collective) chains here. If Davis isn't traded, I'll be really pissed at Levine -- not because I want Davis gone so bad, just because how many times can a guy be wrong without being called out for it?
  14. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Mar 30, 2005 -> 08:12 PM) So does anyone have a guess at all??? I don't think it's the Dodgers because they have Bako, Navarro and that other guy. I also thought that the Minny rumors were just that. I'd guess that if Davis gets traded, he'll end up in LA (Dodgers), Tampa, or Colorado. Just a guess, no speculation/facts behind it.
  15. I wouldn't take too much from it -- Vazquez isn't really effective down in 'Zona, he can't throw that curveball. It sorta just hangs up there... But kudos to Everett. Keep it up, Carl!
  16. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 30, 2005 -> 07:33 PM) Yep. Chris Widger .242 career AVG Mike Matheny .239 career AVG Now, I'm not saying that Widger is on par with Matheny but this is likely about defensive prowess behind the plate. And he can probably -- just an assumption here -- probably hit lefties better than Davis can/would...
  17. I'm still shocked that Jabroni wasn't the one who started the thread... Anyways, if what Jason said is true about the Yankees -- that they traded a pretty good prospect just for a backup catcher, than I'm hoping that Kenny can hit the jackpot here. Well, maybe not that, but I'd be really happy if he can get a solid prospect. (On a sidenote, I dunno what to think about this fantasy baseball trade -- Ichiro, Marcus Giles, and Guardado for Willis, Nixon, and Vidro) -- Thread hijack over, my bad.
  18. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 30, 2005 -> 12:33 AM) Timo could be really expendable when Thomas comes back. Gload and Harris both play the OF as does Everett. That's the way I'd hope it would play out...
  19. Oh my. I'm reaching for the mute button. Hawk ripping on the 'OBP' stat now...
  20. QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Mar 29, 2005 -> 08:34 PM) Guess who has a signed #24 Borchard jersey? Me. And a #24 Crede signed jersey? Oh yeah, definitely me. And a #52 signed Garland jersey? Me. At elast I have an authentic sleeveless Buehrle jersey. You mean I'm not the only one with a Joe Borchard jersey?
  21. Yesterday, dumbass Reynolds predicted that the Dodgers might finish last in the NL West... :banghead :banghead
  22. QUOTE(studes @ Mar 29, 2005 -> 02:46 PM) I'm really not an expert on Japanese baseball. But I thought that Aaron's analysis seemed fair and, from what I've seen in spring training, Iguchi looks like a hitter. I'm not too sure what to think of him in the field, though. What do you guys think? I'm with southsider2k on this one. I think he can hit well -- I dunno about .300 well, but I can see him hitting .290 with a .340-.350 OBP. He likes to use every part of the field, which so far in Spring Training (not a lot of AB's, small sample size, but whatever) has meant good things for him. Defensively, meh -- I think he'll make the plays that come to him, but he doesn't have anywhere near the range that Harris does (as SS2k5 aluded to). I'm interested to see if he actually backhands a ball. Isn't it "wrong" to backhand a ball in Japan?
  23. QUOTE(qwerty @ Mar 29, 2005 -> 07:38 AM) I believe i was one of them considering his contract is the following. Gah -- that's one ugly contract. Yeah, no need for us to get bogged down in a contract like that, especially with Anderson/Sweeney/Young coming to the majors in the next two-three years. I would, however, have traded Maggs for JD Drew if there was that possibility, though. I doubt it was though, so I won't harp on it, but I'd much rather have Drew than Jones...
  24. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 29, 2005 -> 02:01 AM) "Andruw Jones hits ninth and 10th homers" http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/recap;_ylc=X3o...0328105&prov=ap Wow, it's a shame that that Magg$ for Andruw Jones trade rumor of last season didn't happen. I sure wouldn't have minded an outfield of Pods in LF, Andruw Jones in CF, and Rowand in RF. Doesn't Jones carry a pretty big contract, though? Meaning, if we traded for him, wouldn't we have had to trade both Lee and Konerko in order to obtain the other players such as Pierz and Hernandez and Iguchi? Oh, and on Baseball Tonight, I almost puked. Reynolds is such garbage. He said (to the effect) that the Dodgers might be the worst team in the NL West. And, I've never heard "Billy-ball" so much in one day (multiple times from Hawk, and twice from his mouth)...
