  1. QUOTE(TheBlackSox8 @ Mar 23, 2005 -> 07:42 PM) who's scheduled to pitch today? I'm pretty sure Garland is going for the Sox. Dunno for the Brew Crew...
  2. That's great, Cheat! And, I'm on the "Bring up Jeremy!" bandwagon...
  3. QUOTE(Steve Bartman's my idol @ Mar 23, 2005 -> 07:16 PM) Yeah, Politte is better than Graves, right? Doesn't Graves make something like five or six million? Politte at 3 million (or so) is >>>> than Graves at five-six million.
  4. QUOTE(Steve Bartman's my idol @ Mar 23, 2005 -> 03:28 AM) If they are thinking about trading Garland, I would package Borchard and Cotts, and get Freel and Austin Kearns. Or how bout Borchard, Ben Davis and Cotts for Kearns, hell what about Danny Graves. Graves sucks, plain and simple.
  5. QUOTE(qwerty @ Mar 23, 2005 -> 03:08 AM) He was eligible this year so next year would be his second year of arbitration i believe. Thanks for clearing that up... I'm sort of pissy right now. The Roundball Classic sucked, we left at halftime... My seats sucked, the whole thing sucked.
  6. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Mar 23, 2005 -> 03:06 AM) I lost a bunch of confidence in him today. Cotts pitched well....Walker blew. But....you can;t judge someone on 1 performance. If that's the case our only ML pitchers would be McCarthy, Buehrle, Shingo, and Walker. But we'll see. It's down to Cotts and Walker. Who wants it more? What exactly are you judging Walker on? His 8 or so IP so far in the Spring?
  7. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 23, 2005 -> 02:59 AM) Just making a point. I sure wouldn't mind having Freel as a fall-back option for Crede, who looks poised for another breakout season. No, but I'm sure not gonna take anything from Spring Training. Has Crede performed at the major league level consistently yet? No -- but I'll start judging him when he isn't hitting in the regular season, not based on 30 ST AB's...
  8. And one more thing -- isn't Garland arbitration eligible for next season? I think Garland is worth right around four-five million if he's able to pitch around 200 innings, and keep his ERA from 4.50-4.80. But then again, the market this offseason got a bunch of pitchers who are about as good as Garland a lot of money, so I dunno...
  9. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 22, 2005 -> 11:32 PM) Would you like to know Podsednik's minor league career OBP? Oh yeah, .347. So what is wrong with .356 anyways? Freel was the Reds' leadoff man for many games last season. I really don't like it when people try to put words in my mouth. Where did I say I like Podsednik as our leadoff man? Anywhere, anywhere at all? Maybe you can look for that while looking among other things...
  10. Freel is a fan favorite in Cincy. I doubt Kenny likes him enough to a point where he'd overpay for him -- and in order for Cincy to trade him, they'll have to be pretty overwhelmed... EDIT: And Freel certainly would not be an option for the leadoff hitter. He had a .375 OBP last year, but in the minors, he was at .356. I highly doubt he keeps it up in the .370's... A nice bench player, but certainly not one you overpay to get.
  11. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Mar 22, 2005 -> 08:37 PM) This really hurts the Giants. His presence in the lineup completely alters the game. Unless there's a stud outfield prospect in the their system, Sabean may need to initiate a trade. Everett anyone? Everett isn't old enough. I believe you have to be 40 or older to play for the Giants...
  12. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Mar 22, 2005 -> 07:58 PM) They should've signed Mantei(who wanted to play in Chicago) or Percival. They simply dropped the ball on that. They have the money to take the chance on those players, but simply didn't. I agree with Mantei, but hell, Percival got a pretty sweet deal from the Tigers (sweet meaning lots of money). Mantei was one of several small signings, but good signings, by Boston...
  13. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 22, 2005 -> 02:47 PM) I doubt they will be able to as well. They will have to seriously overpay now since those teams will have them by the balls. Hendry has blown it already for a second straight year on the closer situation. He didn't want to overpay Armando Benitez or Troy Percival and this is what it gets him. Barring a trade, they are back to either LaTroy "Headcase" Hawkins or Ryan "I have no business closing" Dempster as their closer. I don't fault Hendry on not signing Benitez or Percival. Percival got way, way too much money (hmm -- the Tigers overpaying, who'da thunk it?), and Benitez' contract will hurt the Giants in that third year. One of the pickups I did like was Williamson, he's real good when healthy. But yeah, the Cubs are in a pretty bad situation at this point. They're going to have to rely on guys like Wellemyer to step up...
  14. QUOTE(AirScott @ Mar 22, 2005 -> 03:51 AM) you talk like there'd be no chance of McCarthy resigning with the Sox as a free agent. No, but it's nicer to have an extra year when it comes to actually needing to shell out the big bucks...
  15. True, but he's an absolute fan favorite down there. He's an Astro for life, I bet... I was holding out slight hope that Houston wouldn't resign him and that he'd reach free agency. Silly me... But, I'd say he's a top five OF'er in the game, and compared to what Maggs got, Berkman's contract seems a lot better. If both were healthy and 100%, I'd take Berkman every day over Maggs, too -- they may have overpaid in years, but I think the money is right (maybe a bit too much).

    Hawk

I should say, even though Hawk has his occasional rants that I dislike, I do like the guy. Sure, he's a homer, but he's one of the most passionate Sox fans there is. He loves the Sox, and it's a lot better, IMHO, than having someone who isn't as passionate...
  17. QUOTE(qwerty @ Mar 22, 2005 -> 01:20 AM) If b-mac comes up here for good wouldn't that be awesome that he could potentially be gone when he is 27? Yeah, that's one of the unfortunate things about McCarthy being brought up, is the arbitration clock starting. I suppose it's moot at this point because Ozzie is absolutely dazzled with McCarthy, but if Buehrle is only going to miss one-two starts, I don't think it's a great idea to have him up just for those one-two starts. I dunno, I just think that we should bring Brandon up when there's a chance that he'll get more than a few starts in a row -- seems kind of pointless to get that arbitration rolling, especially for one-two games...

    Hawk

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Mar 22, 2005 -> 01:23 AM) He also repeats the same thing over and over if you listen to him very often. See Soxfest 2005 and his dumb comments about how many home runs the Sox hit compared to the Yankees, yada yada yada. Or his yearly (usually twice, at least a couple times in the last two years) anti-Moneyball/anti-Beane rant. I heard the 'KW best GM' comment as well, and as much as Kenny tries to field a winning team, he's no where near the top. I don't know how he can even put Kenny in the top half, considering he hasn't made the playoffs yet.
  19. Go to "Edit Player", it'd under "Roster" or something like that. You can do it in your franchise mode, too, which is pretty cool...
  20. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Mar 22, 2005 -> 12:10 AM) Even if Contreras is pitching well? If Contreras is pitching well, than, we're in one hell of a great situation, santo. At that point, I want B-Mac in the bullpen -- if he's pitching well, but not as well as Contreras/Garland. I'd think that Politte/Cotts would be the odd man out, at that point -- but I'm looking down a road that hasn't even been built yet, so it's pointless speculation. It would be great, though, if McCarthy dominates his first couple starts, Buehrle comes back, Garland and Contreras start picking it up because they got heat on their asses. It'd be one real, real nice situation to have... And, I think Texas could be a team that would actually take a good look at Contreras in a midseason deal, but that's here nor there at this point...
  21. Well, Bowden seems to be interested in those toolsy OF'ers, as shown for his love for Escobar. If we can get someone decent from Washington, a nice pitching prospect, I'd go for it -- if not, keep Borchard, and hope he can raise his stock with some nice work in at Charlotte.
  22. Can anyone, from a medical standpoint, say whether or not it would be "better" for Buehrle to have a broken bone in his toe/foot, or a torn ligament? I assume the bone would be "better" (meaning he'd be out less time with that than the torn ligament), but can someone say for sure?
  23. QUOTE(beck72 @ Mar 21, 2005 -> 07:49 PM) Every manager in the league would put the 21 yr old rookie in the 5th spot, and move up the rest of the rotation But then everyone else is in a role they're not used to. Garcia isn't a #1 and Contreras isn't a #3 (yet -- hopefully this year he improves). But then again, I consider that all moot -- I really don't like putting a number on a pitcher. It'll certainly be a nice problem to have, having capable men battling for five spots. I guess it can only mean good things, right?
  24. Don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but a guy over at WSI (who lives in Texas) said that the Rangers are a team that is interested in Contreras (per their FSN in Texas). A trade to Texas could make sense. They seem to be like a possible candidate, if McCarthy proves capable of handling the majors. And I agree with Jim. You can't really put age as a factor against McCarthy. If he's ready, he's ready, and we'll all know whether or not he can handle it -- age aside. If he's better than someone in our rotation, you gotta do what's best for the team, and keep him up. This is all, if he proves capable.
  25. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 21, 2005 -> 08:20 PM) Just heard the news. I want to kill myself. The only thing that's keeping me from the ledge is B-Mac. If this was any other season, I would think we were dead ducks. Finally, it appears that we have someone to fill in for him. It looks like B-Mac gets his wish and will be in the rotation to start the season. Wow... He broke a bone in his foot, it's not like he's having Tommy John surgery or repairing a broken labrum... It's gonna be alright. Just a few starts....
