I wouldn't mind: Fukodome LF Cabrera SS Thome DH A. Jones CF Kotchman 1B Dye RF AJ C Fields 3rd Richar 2nd 1. MB 2. Vazquez 3. Contreras 4. Danks 5. Ervin Santana/Floyd If the Angels were interested in PK, assuming they lose out on Cabrera. You'd definitely need some right handed bench help, which we have some (Ozuna, Hall). It'd be nice to get Piazza on a cheap deal to help spell Thome and Kotchman, assuming he could play a little first. And before anyone even mentions it, I'm ignoring Toby Hall comparisons.

Fukodome LF Cabrera SS Thome DH PK 1B Dye RF AJ C Fields 3rd Richar 2nd Owens CF Oops - this is a prediction not want list...
-
If the Sox are true players for Cabrera, then it's conceivable that Danks would be going in a trade. If he could be had for Crede, then the Sox could replace him. Or maybe the Marlins would want him... I know it's a major long shot, just looking at the domino effect.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 24, 2007 -> 04:53 PM) That is a huge IF, that I don't see happening. I could be wrong, maybe there isn't a market for Jones, but I just don't see it. It's probably more likely to develop after Rowand signs.

OFFICIAL: Sox Sign Linebrink - 4 yrs, 19 mil

QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Nov 24, 2007 -> 04:03 PM) I think its not the deal itself in terms of money (the Orioles gave out similar deals last year) but I'd guess its the 4th year and the fact that Linebrink was a shell of his former self last year. Thats my guess With all the signings from Boras' clients alone, which the Sox are never apart of, how would this signing possibly get attention from the industry. They can all **** me if they're upset. That's absolutely ridiculous. -
QUOTE(That funky motion @ Nov 23, 2007 -> 10:57 PM) He was really bad judging the ball in the Cell, last time he was here. That worries me! Maybe it was really windy... Any player would have to adjust, even Hunter who is used to playing in a dome most of the time.

Are the Sox too Cheap to Win Bidding Wars?

QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 23, 2007 -> 06:06 PM) and it's too bad Ozzie never kicked his ass. Its never too late... Of course Mariotti chooses not to go Sox games, yet write about the clubhouse and interactions as if it were first hand knowledge. If he ever had the balls, which I'm confident he doesn't, maybe there will be a slight chance. What a wonderful day that would be. -

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 23, 2007 -> 05:54 PM) Didn't the Sox just outbid everyone else for the top reliever on the free agent market? Mariotti will either conveniently ignore it, or make a claim it's irresponsible spending. Stuff like - The guy isn't that good or it's a diversion to not spend elsewhere and that they were still cheap because it was only a reliever and the Blizzard of Oz will screw everything up - the end. -

Mariotti will do whatever it takes to make a good situation look bad, and a bad situation look worse. Its his life mission against the Sox, and its disgusting that he makes a good living off of it. -

QUOTE(max power @ Nov 22, 2007 -> 09:21 AM) This site is hilarious. The majority of the posts are people b****ing when other teams sign people at prices and years we don't want, and then more b****ing when we sign the #1 free agent reliever that isn't a closer. Its impossible to make a realistic move that will be seen as a good one. Everyone lives in fantasy land. So true... In actuality, he probably could have gotten more elsewhere. -
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 21, 2007 -> 05:04 AM) It does help that a. Cabrera was brought in to be the starter on a different team b. Richar plays a different position Well of course, but he still seemed pretty enthusiastic about it, which is encouraging. He could have said, you can bring in anyone to play second and I'll be fine. That could have been acceptable, but not so warm and fuzzy.

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Nov 21, 2007 -> 08:39 AM) stupid question: has minny completely ruled out trying to re-sign hunter? No, supposedly Hunter will go to them before completing a deal. However, they are still major long shots.
-
QUOTE(greg775 @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 08:17 PM) So does everybody. The issue as always is, go ahead and get Cabrera if you like him, but don't give up Garland for god sakes. If the Angels wanted pitching, make them take Floyd or MacDougal or Thornton or Charlie. Entice them with somebody who is not an effective inning eater. Garland is a No. 2, 3 pitcher available in a season where not much pitching is available. Bad bad trade. How would that have been remotely possible? You can't piss in the air and convince them its raining...
-
QUOTE(rockren @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 09:13 PM) Brining up Big Ben in any conversation with Hunter makes me want to steer clear of Hunter that much more. Why, do the Sox have a head band rule or something?
-
QUOTE(G&T @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 09:26 PM) Yeah, he seemed to say that by the end of the contract, Hunter might not even be able to DH because of a bad back and knees. Shoot - he'd be an awful DH now. His defense is what separates him. He's not bad at the plate, but hardly qualifying himself as DH material.
-
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 04:01 AM) The other thing is supposedly Baltimore is discussing a Bedard/Kemp deal with LA. KW has been after Bedard for years. Is LA trying to get him for KW? I'd totally take the guy, but it could be more likely that they're trying to make Kershaw more expendable in a Cabrera deal, even though they'd be losing Kemp in the process.
-
QUOTE(joeynach @ Nov 15, 2007 -> 10:06 PM) From mlbtraderumors.com: "Olney has an exec source who believes Hunter will sign with the Rangers for six years and $90MM." LAME! I think I could live without him for that price. Still, we need to fill the void. I still would like Rowand back, but it sounds like he might also be getting some high offers - most notably the Dodgers apparently. I don't know at this point, I'm still holding onto the glimmer of hope that Cabrera is heading our way. I could handle BA out there if he was playing 3rd or LF for us.
-
My first thoughts after I heard this was that the market is not what they thought it was for him. The Yankees are probably still the only team that can afford him, besides the Red Sox who probably sign Lowell. The Angels don't want to pay a player double to that of Vlad, although the Dodgers are still a possibility though I suppose. They are probably pushing harder for Cabrera. Cabrera screwed this market up for him...
-
QUOTE(BaseballNick @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 08:50 PM) Kalapse, I normally agree with about 99.99% of everything you write, but what about the way the White Sox have drafted would make you want a second or third round draft choice over a proven bullpen arm? Our bullpen was awful last year, and for the most part, our early round draft choices haven't exactly been "can't miss" prospects. If you can help the team now by signing a pitcher at the expense of a 2nd or 3rd rounder, I say do it. Agreed, in fact, it may allow the Sox to take a larger gamble on their number 1 pick, and have the money to sign him with the savings.
-
Way to high jack the thread and make this about Chris Young. Who gives a ****? At this stage of the game, I've moved on, and I'm happy we have Vazquez. You make Vazquez available in this market, and see what you get back. I bet it's a boat load...
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 04:03 AM) To be fair, Vazquez isn't exactly making the league minimum. That's the point, if you have Young you'd have to spend to replace Javy, especially considering we had less options, at the time of the trade, with pitching depth in the system than we do now. So you would either be spending on a CF, like we're doing, or spending on a starting pitcher, which in this market, could be more expensive with less bang for your buck. Very little quality pitching on the market...
-
QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 03:49 AM) Just curious, but if the Sox get Hunter and have a LF of one (or two) of Owens/Stewart/Crisp, that would be an all black OF. Now, when was the last time Chicago had an all black OF? I actually thought about that as well, and I don't know the answer to that, but I remember Dye being the only one on the team for a while.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 03:59 AM) With seeing all these ridiculous contracts, can I get state that the Chris Young trade really hurt this franchise. I'll shut up now and take the criticism. Criticism is that the team would then have to spend the money for starting pitcher vs. a CF.
-
I like Crisp in LF and Hunter in CF if possible. Pretty good defensive outfield...

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 12:33 AM) I'm just wary of giving up our 3 main young pieces for Miggy. Don't get me wrong he's a great player. But couldn't we just try to target him when he hits FA? And if you make that deal, you pretty much HAVE to deal Garland, just for payroll purposes, and that will make our rotation weaker. He's a couple years from FA, he's just getting expensive. That's why the Marlins may be parting ways. It was pretty much between him or Willis, and they are leaning towards keeping Willis around for at least the beginning part of next year to prove his down year was a fluke.
