Fielder to Detroit 9 years $214million

No doubt about it. Prince's 6.4 WAR in '09 was a fluke and will never be matched again despite the fact he's 27. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 25, 2012 -> 08:31 AM) jaysonst Jayson Stark Did some checking on Prince's HRs. RF in Comerica is 339 feet. Shortest Prince HR to RF in any park last year was 363. #somuchforparkfactor Park factor analysis has become borderline ridiculous. It started with Coors back in the late 90's. Which was justified. And I certainly understand Petco. I think it applies some to average players/pichers. But the elite will be elite anywhere. Otherwise they're not elite. -

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 09:32 PM) The Prince effect in Detroit?....2 WINS. Fielder is a 5 WAR player. V-Mart was a 3 WAR Player. That's an insane investment for 2 freaking wins next season. Yeah, well, they didn't sign him for one year. And Fielder's upside is that of a 6/6.5. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 09:34 PM) That whole "protection" concept has been disproven over and again. '94 Frank Thomas disagrees. As good as he was from '91'-93, he was making a mockery of the sport in '94 once they put Julio Franco behind him instead of a washed up George Bell or a broken down Bo Jackson. But keep deluding yourself into thinking that the Tigers didn't get a whole lot better. -

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 09:24 PM) They beat the Cavs by 7 at home. This, after losing to the Bucks at home. I know. They looked like crap. I just noticed that Bosh is a much more aggressive player with Wade out. -

How the f*** did Carmelo score 1 point in 30 minutes against the Bobcats? And Bosh looks like Raptors Bosh since Wade's been out. -
Another White Sox / Blue Jays trade on the horizon?

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 04:44 PM) True, but value as far as defense is at the highest it's been for him. A team sees that, looks at the team control years, and then pictures his rookie year OBP, and maybe for the right team this is actually the most intriguing he'll be ever again He'll be 26 by late next season--the question has to be asked at some point here... Unless Pedroia is getting traded, Beckham would be their SS. Where his defense would take a severe dip in value. You've gotta give Gordon at least another year with a new hitting coach. If he bombs, good bye. -

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 05:28 PM) Is Fielder and Cabrera better than Fielder and Braun? Yes, I think as for as RH hitters go you've got the clear #1 in Pujols, followed closely by Miggy and then I'd say Braun. Miguel has never had this type of protection behind him before. He could have his best year yet. -

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 05:25 PM) I think the case really is that pitching and defense wins championships. The tigers still aren't real strong in either one. Their offense will carry the division, and that isn't saying much, but I don't think they'll go much further. And I agree completely. I said the Tigers had the division on lock. Not the AL. I still can't believe how little love the Rays STILL get. When you've got Price, Hellickson, Moore and Shields, yes, you've got a squad. -

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 05:19 PM) Leyland + Verlander is an injury waiting to happen. Are you kidding me? OK, and when it happens, I'll say you guys were right. We've been hearing about Verlander and impending injuries for years. We've been hearing about how fat Prince Fielder is for years. Now it's Miggy. And all these guys do is perform. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 05:20 PM) Yeah, why bother playing the games. I love you but man you love what other teams do, but if the White Sox did the same thing you would find 1000 reasons to say they are going to suck. That's not true. It wasn't that long ago that I was Mr. Optimistic when it was warranted. You don't see me pimpin' the Cubs and Astros. Rays, Rangers, Phillies? You better believe I admire them. I don't think the Tigers are some premier organization. But the talent is undeniable. -

So the case against Detroit at the moment is too wait for their fat guys, even though they've always been fat, to turn into Mo Vaughn, or for Miggy to drink himself out of baseball. Nice. If that happens, then fine. As of right now, it's curtains. They'll be plenty of drama in the other two divisions. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 04:44 PM) Yeah, Sizemore, Sabathia, Carmona, and Hafner on the same team doesn't measure up to that. Mauer, Morneau, and Liriano/Santana, with Nathan in the pen, doesn't measure up to that. Um, OK? Most of those guys either got hurt or traded. And Carmona doesn't even count, as that's not his real name. Have Verlander, Cabrera or Fielder spent any time on the DL? -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 04:36 PM) And a couple seasons ago, everyone would have said the same thing about Minnesota. And a couple seasons before that, Cleveland. Hey, if you want to hold on to the "anything can happen in baseball" card be my guest. This is just ridiculous. You're talking the best pitcher and two of the top, what, 6 offensive forces in baseball in their primes on the same team. This is different than anything the division has had to contend with previously. -

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 04:29 PM) But we're talking about the Tigers, who lost in the WS because of defense. Last year it looked like the White Sox, Red Sox, and Yankees would be the only teams worth a damn, with the Red Sox steamrolling everyone. s*** happens that doesn't make sense (Dunn). It can happen again. Man, they're not going to leave Miguel over there to embarrass himself all year. Fact is the Central sucks and there's not a case for anybody other than Detroit. -

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 04:23 PM) Come on man, you know what happens when you call a team a powerhouse. Ironically, the Knicks have great offensive players and terrible D. It's all falling into place. And the Tigers were a couple wins away from the World Series last year and now feature without question the three best players in the division. And I mean that as in a distance. -

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 04:08 PM) I don't care if Miggy is "in shape" to play 3rd. That D will be horrendous They'll experiment with it. If he's horrendous, and he probably will be, they're not going to leave him there. As far as the deal overall? s***, this division is spoken for through at least 2014. I don't care what anybody says. We know what the Sox are. The Twins might actually be in worse shape than the Sox. The Royals still have no SP. The Indians are probably the one team you could make a non-silly sounding case for (i.e. Ubaldo reverting back to first-half 2010 form). We all know that they'll regret this when Prince is 31, 32, 33. But right now he's 27 and in his prime. I cannot ever remember a time where you had this many potential powerhouses in the AL at one time. The days of NY/Boston and everybody else are long over with. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 12:39 PM) the problem is that they have other way bigger needs right now. Exactly. You've all but wasted their prime years (though I think Briggs has a couple years of elite production left) because you couldn't compliment them with a legitimate offense. It's never a good thing when you're most dangerous scoring weapon is your kick returner. -

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 12:08 PM) Littlehurt, Where has anyone argued differently? J4l is trying to argue that in the 90s Super Bowls werent won by teams with HOF QB's. No one is arguing there is more offensive stats in 2000 beyond. But you're ignoring the rules changes. Mathew Stafford, statistically, had a better season than any of Aikman's years (who's notoriously overrated) and all but one of Young's years. Elway didn't win jack until he got Terrell Davis. Teams relied more on the run back then. That's not the case today. It's pass, pass, pass, run, pass, run, run, pass, pass, pass. -

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 11:54 AM) j4l, What? The 90s were dominated by offense. I dont even know what you are arguing. The Cowboys had Aikman, Irvin and Smith, the 49ers had Young, Taylor and Rice. Broncos had Elway, Smith and Sharpe. As for athletes, Ill take Deion and many of the other 90's athletes. This isnt a comparison to 1970, there were plenty of amazing athletes in the 90s, and thats why the all time leading rusher, all time leading receiver and all time leading passer played in the 90s. No, the numbers emphatically suggest that offense in the modern era trumps that of the 90's. Yeah, Deion was special and would fit quite well in today's game. But c'mon now. These guys in 2012 are bigger, stronger, faster and more athletic than ever. This is not even up for debate. -

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 11:36 AM) Eh it depends on how you define "elite" which I think is getting a little to broad these days. That being said, why say last 9, I think the simple truth is from 1990 on the majority of Super Bowls have been won by teams with HOF QB's. Doesnt mean you have to have a HOF Qb, just your chances of winning are significantly improved. You can't go back that far. That was a different era. You have to look at today and the current rules that are in place that enhance offense. Not to mention that the athletes today are just spectacular and make early 90's guys look silly. -
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 11:19 AM) He pretty much said Ozzie let this team lose their edge after 2008. It definitley turned into the Ozzie show and less about the actual team. That is where I think Robin WILL be solid- the focus will now be in the basics of baseball. I agree with Hawk, Coach Robin will be a breath of fresh air. This team won't go far this year, but it will be nice to see guys like Morel, Viciedo, Beckham & De Aza progress through out the season! Im also interested in our new young arms! This is what I'll try to remember (and let me seriously emphasize the word try) when we're more than likely 10 games out in June/July. This is a developmental year. If any of the "big" four decides to attempt to earn their salary, and in Beckham's case justify his draft position and expectations following '09, that'll just be a big ass bonus.

I am very proud of what the 49ers done this season and the future we have with Harbaugh as the coach. QUOTE (HeGone33 @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 10:52 AM) I'm trying to be as positive as I can, but man I feel like I just got punched in the face by a dude that stole my wife from me....... I agree with Obama, as long as NY was getting the ball on their side of the field in the 2nd half they weren't doing a damn thing.... Reality is the offense had many opportunities after that and couldn't get the job done.. I must give you two credit. You've been very gracious and are not making any excuses. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 10:45 AM) If Ted Ginn was playing last night, we would have won this game. Our defense played amazing in the 2nd half of the game. I just hope Kenny Williams gives me a great Sox season to looked for, cause I am so pissed off at Kyle. I won't blame him for the 2nd mistake but the ball hitting off his knee, is what cost us this damn game. The final score should have been 49ers 17 NYG 10. I wanted to make fun of you. But I can't. That's just a demoralizing way to lose a championship game.
