What a disaster this rotating DH NL lineup idea is...
It'd be a lot easier for me to get on Ozzie if Peavy, Beckham, CQ, A.J., and Alexei weren't performing like replacement level players.

Sox situation: Grave
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Apr 23, 2010 -> 02:10 AM) The Sox have also made the playoffs 3 times during this decade, which isn't too bad. I realize it isn't Yankees or Red Sox good but given the payroll that isn't all that bad. I'm utterly disappointing that we didn't win more or make the playoffs more but we were in a division that has been relatively competitive, albeit many years lacking a great team. Lets not act as if the team has been a failure recently. Considering there hasn't been anything remotely close to a powerhouse in our division (i.e. the Red Sox or Yankees) 3 years outta 10 is not impressive at all. The payroll has been up over 100+ 4 of the last 5 years. This despite the fact that it takes winning the World Series to rack up consistent sell-outs. Hey, I don't want to go that route. But I'm certainly not going to jump ship if they do. I mean a playoff appearance every 3-4 years doesn't exactly get me stoked. I'd rather build for a sustained run if possible. And what worries me the most is that we're starting to lag behind. The Twins aren't going anywhere. I've accepted this fact. And now they can spend. The Tigers have proven they'll spend money. The Indians have a loaded farm. We're just kinda blah. Well, those teams don't have a problem drawing fans. And I'm not asking for a Braves type run. It's still really early, but this team is in danger of missing the playoffs for the 4th time in 5 years since 2005. That's just not getting it done in a division that's been underwhelming to say the least.

Sox situation: Grave
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Apr 23, 2010 -> 01:24 AM) Just an FYI, but while some of us might like seeing young players, the majority of the fans will have zero interest seeing young players, especially if they aren't high upside young players, go through the motions of a 90 to 100 loss season. You're right. And this drives me absolutely crazy. Since 1983, we've made the postseason 5 times. That means in 21 of the last 26 seasons we did not see playoff baseball. That, well, sucks. I laugh when I hear, and again you're right, Sox fans talk about they won't stand for a youth movement or any type of rebuilding. "I WON'T GET ANY TICKETS IF THEY REBUILD!" As if we've had this extended run of success. You know what? Stay the f*** home then. The attendance is second rate anyway. I'd rather go the route of putting more effort into the draft, beefing up the farm, maybe make a shrewd trade or two, and go from there. Beats spending 100+ million only to finish third most years. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Apr 23, 2010 -> 01:39 AM) I'd lose my mind. I take it you didn't become a fan until 2005? Either that or you were too young to see the teams from 95-99. And some of the older chatters can go back way back to when it was even worse than that.

2010 Minor League Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (DirtySox @ Apr 23, 2010 -> 01:10 AM) It's true. Bumgarner is broken, and noone knows why. There was some recent articles about it. Everyone merely thought he was overworked at the end of last year and his velocity would be back this season. That has not been the case, and it is very troubling since they can't find anything wrong with the kid. Edit: Neyer's recent piece: http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/i...ing-in-triple-a Thanks for posting that article. Yeah, I've never heard of that type of loss in velocity and it not be injury related. The Giants are definitely in a bind.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Apr 23, 2010 -> 12:39 AM) Justin Smoak (the guy alot of people here liked for the sox to pick last year before we took Beckham) is gonna get the call up tomorrow for Texas and will be in the lineup. Chris Davis to AAA. Here are Smoak's ridiculous stats in AAA. 16/8 BB:SO ratio.. ya he's ready. I think I heard the Giants are close with Buster Posey as well. (maybe one more month) Gonna be fun watching him catch Lincecum/Cain/Bumgarner etc.. in the future. I heard Bumgarner's FB was topping out at 88? I hope that's wrong. That's quite alarming if true.

Sox situation: Grave
QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Apr 23, 2010 -> 12:46 AM) Maybe not. We would probably have to sacrifice our younger talent to get something but that ain't gonna happen I think. The only two guys on the entire roster that would net us a nice return are Danks and Beckham. The latter is obviously going nowhere. Danks? Could be interesting if they can't come to an agreement on a long-term deal.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Apr 23, 2010 -> 12:41 AM) Justin Smoak called up to the show for Texas. Chris Davis sent down. Posted his stats and such on our minor league board. Nice. Can't wait for Santana/Posey/Alvarez/Stanton to get their callups. And of course Strasburg and Chapman.

QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Apr 23, 2010 -> 12:41 AM) Ace, there is time still to really focus on what is wrong but as bad as this sounds we may have some nice vterans to sell of for some prospects later this year. Too early though. GO SOX!!! One quick note, it is sad that as of now JDanks one would be the one to fetch us the most in a trade. But as I said too early. We do?

Blah-zie Ball
QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 23, 2010 -> 12:08 AM) OK, but did you think in watching the game he had a good fastball? I didn't regardless of what the gun said. Just wondering others' opinions on Jake and the game. He walked 7. You do that against the Pirates and you might get away with it. The Rays? See ya!

NBA playoffs thread
QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 22, 2010 -> 11:23 PM) The Bulls were starting to piss me off but they managed to hold on. LeBron is pretty ridiculous in the 4th. He stands there, with a guy's hand in his face, dribbling, then he'll just jump up and drain a 3. It's funny, Lebron was putting up 31/7/6 by his third year, yet his game was very much flawed. His ball-handling was a little suspect. His defense was average at best. And he couldn't shoot for s***. Now he excels at all three.

Kobe really looks like he's lost a step. It's hard to believe he's been in the league 14 years. It doesn't seem like he's been around that long. All that wear and tear is starting to catch up. They'll beat the Thunder. But without a 100% peak Kobe, they're going to have a super hard time getting through the west, let alone winning the title.

4/22 GT: Rays vs. White Sox. 7:10 PM Central Time, CSN+2, WSCR 670
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Apr 22, 2010 -> 10:20 PM) It doesn't help at all yes, but you would have to imagine we would be scoring more runs per game (and OBP) than we are now with people who we didn't want (Pierre, Kotsay, etc..) I wanted N. Johnson (.382 OBP), Damon (.419 OBP), Gardner (.413 OBP) and buy low guys like Hermida (.854 OPS) Kearns (.850 OPS) etc.. and look where they are at. I HATE Pods as much as I hate Pierre, so I'm not even gonna mention his great start in this but there were guys people (including myself) were clamoring for before this season started cause we knew the lack of OBP and KW and Ozzie were depending on guys to have career years all in one season (I.E. 2005). Nick Johnson is the most injury prone player in baseball. Johnny Damon's OBP is nice. But who's driving him in? Beckham? CQ? Konerko? Damon certainly isn't driving himself in. As his 0 HRs and .333 SLG% has shown. Gardner? I wouldn't have minded him. Again, Gardner's OBP means squat when our top guys aren't producing. Hermida and Kearns certainly don't get me excited. Outside of adding somebody like Pujols, Utley or Longoria, there's nobody out there that could've been added that would be able to compensate for guys like Peavy, Beckham, CQ, Ramirez and AJ all sucking ass so far.

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 22, 2010 -> 10:05 PM) Does it really matter anymore? That's like putting a band aid on a flesh wound. That's what's getting on my nerves about some people. They keep looking at who we didn't sign. What does Damon, Thome, Pods or whatever other name you want to throw out there have to do with the fact that guys like Peavy, Beckham, CQ (who's been awful), AJ, ect have not performed?

4/22 GT: Rays vs. White Sox. 7:10 PM Central Time, CSN+2, WSCR 670
QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 22, 2010 -> 09:58 PM) Just think if they took Gordon instead of Tim Beckham. They're going to get hurt with Crawford leaving, but I've always thought he's overrated. If Jennings is as good as most scouts think, they won't miss Crawford at all. Pena is the guy they'll end up missing if they can't sign him. And I think they guy they probably most regret not drafting in 2008 is Buster Posey. Catcher is their one weak spot right now. Imagine him with the rest of this core? That's a terrifying thought.

4/22 GT: Rays vs. White Sox. 7:10 PM Central Time, CSN+2, WSCR 670
QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 22, 2010 -> 09:49 PM) I said earlier they have 5 guys who would be the best player on the Sox. I'd take Zobrist over Beckham if Zobrist is playing 2nd base. Not only that, but their pitching rotation is easily better than that of the Sox. I can't disagree with anything you just said here. They've got a real powerhouse. They obviously had a lot of high first round picks from 99-2007 (and you still gotta make the right picks. Which they've done). But they've made some great draft picks that weren't first rounders (Wade Davis, Desmond Jennings on the way) and have executed some OUTSTANDING trades the last few years. It's a shame they play in a baseball toilet bowl that is Florida.

My oh my. We're not in the same galaxy as TB right now. Other than Beckham, who would start for them out of our position players? 2008 was no fluke for them. They're going to be around for quite some time.

Are the White Sox relevant? Is 2007-itis setting in?
QUOTE (chisoxt @ Apr 22, 2010 -> 09:13 PM) I agree with most of what you said, but our GM has made one enormously egregious mistake with a big contract and his name is Jake Peavy. This guy may be a bigger bust that Todd Ritchie.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 22, 2010 -> 11:57 AM) It's mid April and this board is pretty much a ghost town. There's hardly any conversation going on in the Pale Hose Forum and he happens to be a very good writer that I enjoy reading. Should we only allow people to post who are complete cheerleaders? If so, the board will go days without any activity. He created this thread 4 hours before this one. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=77203 He could've went on another one of his long-winded rants in this one. Why create another one? Kyle is dead-on.

2010 Cubs Thread
QUOTE (sircaffey @ Apr 22, 2010 -> 12:15 AM) No it's not. The bullpen is slightly more influential than pinch hitting. The Cubs pen has already cost them a number of games/opportunities. There would be no point in moving a SP to the pen who couldn't be a good RP. Add to it that Zambrano has completely sucked in the rotation and everyone else has been great makes it that more obvious. This situation is funny to me, and a complete f***-up by Hendry, but this absolutely the correct move, imo. And at no point did Lou say this was permanent. I'm sure it's just an experiment. I think it's worth a shot. A slightly above NL league average starter, which is pretty much what Zambrano has been the last 2+ years, or a potential dynamite set-up man to get the ball to Marmol? I say go for it. The money he's making doesn't matter. He gets that regardless. Of course, if Carlos Silva and Tom Gorzelanny go back to being Carlos Silva and Tom Gorzelanny, they'll have to move him back to the rotation. But outside of the Phillies, Cardinals and the NL west, the NL is so bad they might be able to get away with having those two bums in the rotation all year.
