QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 27, 2009 -> 09:33 PM) His numbers compare favorably to some of the greatest 2B of all time (Joe Morgan), he was unbelievable at his peak and he's one of the greatest defensive 2B of all time. Barry Bonds
QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 02:24 PM) I wish you much success and happiness surrounding yourself with people with little or no character. I especially hope when picking a future spouse you drop the whole character thing, since it is so unimportant I don't think it's important in a sporting sense. Give me a team full of Barry Bonds' over a team full of Jim Thome's any day of the week if it means I have a better chance to win a championship.

Barry Bonds
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 02:19 PM) He will officially be soon enough. Besides being an admitted drug user, he will soon enough be a convicted purjor. Fair enough. But really, do people really hate Bonds because he lied in court? C'mon now. That's just finding something, anything to rag on the guy about.

Barry Bonds
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 02:13 PM) Well technically he is. All the illegal drug use aside; perjury is a felony. Well, when I think criminal, I think violence. But people been hating on Bonds way before the perjury case. And I'm certainly in no position to judge somebody on illegal drug use.

Barry Bonds
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 02:04 PM) I really can't cheer for Brett Myers, anyone like him or any team he plays for. You really need to draw the line somewhere. Well yeah. I mean that goes without saying. I can't support criminals. But Bonds is certainly no criminal. Not even close.

Williams has to make a splash
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 01:59 PM) JJ PUTZ is a "gap" signing? REALLY? Are we now the NY YANKEES? Maybe bringing back LH RP Williams or Sean Tracey, lol. Carl Everett...might as well add Mark Mulder, Penny or John Smoltz to the list, haha. Those would be gap signings. Byrd, Crisp, Matsui, Damon...we speculated all last off-season about Bobby Abreu and also O-Dog, Abreu in particular became uber-cheap, and we still didn't get him. God forbid, Milton Bradley if the Cubs eat 80% of that salary, or Soriano. That can't happen though, it would be too embarassing for them to send Fukudome/Bradley/Soriano, PAY for either one of them, then watch him lead the White Sox to the post-season. Same problem with DET eating the contract of Ordonez, Carlos Guillen, etc. What would be incredibly awesome would be getting Edwin Jackson for a cheap price from the Tigers, but even DD isn't that stupid. They would try to dump Robertson, Bonderman or Dontrelle Willis and KW would have none of it...well, maybe he would be intrigued by Bonderman or Willis with the right amount of money to subsidize either deal, say 85-90%!!! For some reason, having Adam Dunn or Nick Johnson here isn't very exciting. Perhaps we'll keep hearing some "newer" old names arise, besides Upton, like Cody Ross, Francouer or Hermida. Um, huh? Dunn's averaged 41 HR and 101 RBI the last 6 years. That definitely would excite me if he were available.

Barry Bonds
QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 01:58 PM) to me its not so much about him being a ped user, its the fact that hes a jerk And? I don't need him to be Mr. Rogers. He's a cocky mofo. Which I love by the way. And he backs the s*** up.

Barry Bonds
QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 01:31 PM) I think you'd be surprised at how many people like Bonds still. He's one of my idols. I've never cared about "character." Can you help my team win baseball games? That's all that matters to me. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 01:50 PM) With one signing the organization would go from one of the cleanest to one of the dirty ones. No thanks. I prefer Thomas' legacy of 'roid free to having the poster boy wearing a Sox uniform. Now, if Ricky thought Ricky could still lead off, let's bring Ricky out of retirement GMAB, Tex. Steroids is so 2004. HUNDREDS of players were doing it. It's time to let go.

Idle speculation ~ Kenny Williams' Sox Future
QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 09:44 AM) I was just thinking, what is K-Dubs next position in baseball? With the Sox? Moving to a bigger stage? He's about at the point where his personal value is probably peaked or slightly down from a few years ago. But he has proven he can GM a team to a WS win, then keep them around the top for years after. He is doing it with a larger payroll than most, but still has a knack for pulling guys off the scrap pile. And to think not that long ago, I, and others, wanted his head. We've missed the playoffs 3 of the last 4 years ( two of those years being sub .500). And thank god that kid called heads (I think it was heads) when determining who would get homefield in the event of a tiebreaker game (I think it's safe to assume we get slaughtered if we have to play the tiebreaker game in Minny). I give Kenny all the credit in the world for putting the '05 team together. And I think he's a good GM. But I wouldn't say he's kept us around the top.

Some of you guys really need to look up the word "patience" in the dictionary. This is getting ridiculous around here.

White Sox sign Andruw Jones
I love this move. Here's a good article from fangraphs last July talking about Jones' "resurgence." http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/index.php...nger-resurgence As Kalapse has stated, he was mashing until he started having health problems. As long as he's utilized correctly, combined with him staying reasonably healthy, and we have an absolute bargain on our hands for next year. Great, great move. I like this MUCH more than the Vizquel signing.

2010 MLB Catch-All Thread
Looks like the Red Sox are making a big push for Halladay. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball...l#ixzz0XsPkv1O9 If Boston is willing to part with Buchholz and Kelly, it's a wrap. I can't see the Yankees topping that unless they're willing to part with 3 of Joba, Hughes, Jackson and Montero. I can't wait until the 7th.

Is Frank Thomas HOF Worthy?
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 10:57 PM) 108-1. Not bad. That damn rangercal.

Is Frank Thomas HOF Worthy?
QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 12:20 PM) Frank's 94 season was Barry Bonds post-2001 caliber. He would have had 55-60 home runs and 150+ RBI with an OPS over 1.200. Frank's '94 season had a legitimate chance of going down as the greatest single-season performance in the HISTORY of the sport. Ruth? Mantle? Williams? Mays? Anybody. Name 'em. Not only did Frank have a better than 50% chance of winning the triple crown, he was leading the league in OBP, SLG, R, and BB. He was 4th in hits, 3rd in total bases, 3rd in doubles, and had an unheard of (unless you're roided up) OPS+ of 211. I'll never, ever, ever get over losing that season. The 2005 championship didn't get me over it. 5 titles in a row won't get me over it. Matter a fact, I'm going to slaughter some innocent animals later tonight. That should help a little bit.

2010 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (smalls2598 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 01:26 PM) Pujols unanimously wins the NL MVP; 2nd MVP in a row for him, and 3rd overall. He basically had the award locked up by mid-June. Prime Ken Griffey Jr. is the best player I've ever seen. Pujols is a close second. Keep in mind I'm leaving out proven/suspected steroid users. Otherwise my top two would be Bonds/Rodriguez.

Omogrosso to be 100% by spring training
QUOTE (qwerty @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 09:56 AM) His peripherals do not suggest he will ever be a factor in the majors, unless arm, after arm, after arm... etc... go down. He is a non prospect at this point, and should never be an option for a team trying to contend for a world series. Prepare to be tag-teamed by scenario and JPN.

Is Frank Thomas HOF Worthy?
QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 10:12 AM) Who the hell voted no!? This stuff's made in New York City! QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 10:12 AM) Who the hell voted no and why? I think it was that rangercal character.

Is Frank Thomas HOF Worthy?
Frank's 1994 season alone gets him in. This is a silly question.

Official: Omar Vizquel Signs with Sox
QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 01:58 PM) Now we should leave Beckham at third, Omar at ss, Lexi at second and Teahen our do everything reserve. Omar plays for us one year then the following year we get another vet ss. It makes perfect sense. Teahen is not the answer at 3B, but he is a great great utility guy. Cmon Sox, do the right thing. Lexi should be our second baseman for the next 10 years. Gordon is great at third. I started to type a rebuttal to this post. But I'm literally at a loss for words.

Is anyone as nervous as I am?
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 01:56 PM) I remember punching a door after hearing Rowand's name in the report, I was so pissed that they would let him go. It only took me about an hour to come to my senses and appreciate the trade. No doubt. After the initial shock I was floored that we landed a player of Thome's caliber. I also bought into the Brian Anderson hype (big mistake). And we still had Chris Young at the time.

Is anyone as nervous as I am?
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 01:50 PM) Really? I mean, I was completely overjoyed but I don't think shocked is the word I'd use personally as the Thome was one of the few trades that was rumored for a while. Rowand getting traded was what shocked me. I just didn't even see it as a possibility that KW would deal him. Obviously, I've learned over time that KW would sell out his own family if it meant making the team better.

Is anyone as nervous as I am?
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 01:44 PM) One of the earliest big time offseason trades you're ever going to see: November 25, 2005: Jim Thome traded by the Philadelphia Phillies with cash to the Chicago White Sox for a player to be named later, Daniel Haigwood (minors) and Aaron Rowand. The Chicago White Sox sent Gio Gonzalez (December 8, 2005) to the Philadelphia Phillies to complete the trade. Today's date: November 23rd. December 1st is the arbitration deadline, Dec. 7-10th is the Winter Meetings, Dec. 12th is the non-tender deadline (this is when you'll start to see some deals get done). I mean, at least give it a few weeks. I'll never forget when I first learned of the Thome trade on the radio. You hear the word 'shocked' all the time. But I can honestly say I was in complete and utter shock when I first heard.

Is anyone as nervous as I am?
I remember the days when fathom was BY FAR the most pessimistic member on the board. Over the last 2-3 years, I don't even think he's in the top 10.
