Sox sign an ex-Angels farmhand
QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jan 24, 2009 -> 02:41 AM) Sounds good, our farm system needs all it can get. A nice year for rebuilding the system and (hopefully just) retooling of the already contending team. Exactly my thinking. And this might just be my opinion, but give me a talented guy who's deemed "uncoachable" (and I think there's always two sides to the story in cases like these) over the not so talented guy that coaches rave about.

Bonds, Griffey and PEDs
I like Bonds because everybody hates him. And he couldn't give two s***s. He was long considered a first ballot HOF before steroids ever became an issue. What he did from '01 to '04 was legendary. If you want to put asterisks on those years, fine. Just make sure you do the same for Roger Clemens, ect.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 23, 2009 -> 09:15 AM) Snore. Old and boring. I don't think the Magic are better though... they are overrated and Jameer Nelson is destined to come back down to Earth. However, the Cavs and Lakers are better teams than the Celtics. Snore all you want. Until either the Cavs or Lakers beat them four times in May or June, the Celtics are the team to beat.

QUOTE (Felix @ Jan 22, 2009 -> 09:54 PM) I hope you burn in hell Purdue played good defense, but we missed a lot of open shots as well. If we had made some of those wide open threes at any point of the game (one of Blake's shots on a fast break is the most obvious in my memory), it would have been a completely different game. lol. I have no idea why I said Badgers. You know what I meant.

QUOTE (Felix @ Jan 22, 2009 -> 08:47 PM) Absolutely disgusting game all around. Blake Hoffarber needs to get his head out of his ass and the team needs to remember how to shoot the goddamn basketball. 28% from the field and 16% from downtown is pathetic and unacceptable. The team was absolutely horrible and the fans were just as bad. A bunch of jackasses decided to chant "you're a pussy" when Keaton Grant got hurt, and were completely classless the entire game. I'm starting to hate all the bandwagon fans who don't know the chants (or anything for that matter, I heard someone asking "which one is Ralph Sampson III?" during warmups) and are only there because the team is ranked/the game was on ESPN2. Yeah, Purdue's D deserves most of the credit. But you guys were pretty sloppy overall. It's going to be tough for the Badgers against really good defensive teams because they lack consistent scoring punch aside from Lawrence Westbrook.

QUOTE (daa84 @ Jan 21, 2009 -> 12:48 PM) ok, so one tough thing for me, is that I eat out quite a bit...now obviously when you eat out, its tough to eat healthy. I've heard to live by the rule that if it sounds unhealthy, it probably is, and if it sounds healthy, its probably just as bad. I mean some salads out there have 1000 cal and 100g of fat. I haven't read the entire thread, and maybe this is somewhere in here (I probably should look first) but what are good options if you are eating out? Either for a quick lunch, or even a dinner, what are some good dishes? What are some "healthy" foods to avoid? Obviously, subway is a great place for me for lunch. I get either a Salad with Roasted chicken and Fat Free Honey Mustard, or sometimes i'll indulge and take on the carbs of the $5 footlong oven roasted chicken with the honey mustard. I wish I knew how to replicate theirdamn fat free honey mustard, its way better than mayo IMO. Ruby Tuesday has a great salad bar, and usually has fat free dressing. I tried Sweet Tomatoes the other day, and its a nice salad bar with alot of healthy options. The problem there is that being a buffet, I was tempted by the dessert line and their little pizza things. Its easy to get bored/sick of eating salad all the time, so what else is pretty good and relatively healthy to grab? Also, for those who do eat alot of salad at home, obviously its critical to find that good healthy dressing. Anyone got good fat-free or even Lite suggestions? I can do the fat free Zesty Italian by Kraft, but what else you guys got? BOSTON MARKET! That's an excellent eat-out place for those watching or trying to lose weight (and the prices are more than reasonable). Last week for dinner I got some sliced roasted turkey, Garlic dill potatoes, steamed veggies and some cornbread. All together it was about 440 calories, 13 grams of fat. And most importantly I was full afterwards. That's a really underrated aspect when it comes to losing or maintaining a certain weight. It makes no sense to eat so little at a time that you're always hungry. All that does is lead to you going crazy and eating foods you're trying to avoid. Another good eat-out place is actually Old Country Buffet. Yes, they have a ton of fattening stuff. But they have a really good selection of healthy things you can eat, too. Last time I went I had some baked fish (which was really good), mashed potatoes (light gravy) veggies (I really like green beans), with a wheat roll. I had a salad as well. They also for dinner usually serve roasted jerk chicken. The s*** is delicious and very good for you. Healthy dressings for salad? Go with low-cal/low fat or non-fat Italian Vinegarette (I think I spelled that wrong). It's really good and much better for you than those thick/fatty ranch or 1000 island dressings. Use no-fat croutons as well. Besides that, when in doubt, just pm Rex. lol. This guy knows his stuff. I can't believe how much weight this dude lost. I saw some before and after pics. You ever see a hot-air balloon before and then after it's deflated? That's Rex. lol. Sorry, Rex. Just givin' you props.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 10:24 PM) Solid win. This team is just so much more enjoyable to watch this yearwithout 2 selfish players dragging them down. They don't have the most talent in the world, but they seem to be playing as a true team this year...without that they could easily be a s***fest again. This team is better than the sum of its parts. Indeed. I see the defense was pretty stout last night (20 turnovers, 41% shooting for OSU). I didn't get to see the game. Looks like the Illini took off when Weber pulled Tisdale, who didn't play well in the first half, and inserted Keller. Keller and Legion have made this team so much better.

Garland thread continues in Diamond Club
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 07:24 PM) I've made this argument before (that I was annoyed with Vazquez trade), but unless he changes his career path dramatically, he's (Young) always going to have his share of limitations. He still has a chance to be a better overall player in his career than Mike Cameron, but there are quite a few parallels, besides the fact they both came up through the White Sox as "toolsy," high profile prospects. We all know what he needs to improve upon. Strikeouts/contact. OBP. His arm is never going to be a "plus" weapon. Batting average. So I don't think you could say he has "limitless" potential at this point. Maybe you could also compare him to another player that never quite became the superstar he was supposed to be, Eric Davis. Although I don't think Young quite matches either Davis' raw power or his overall speed either. Maybe our anger about this trade is not as much anymore about Young's potential (and it can still backfire with that long-term deal he might have prematurely signed from the DBacks' perspective) but with the lack of cojonoes that Vazquez showed in 2008 AND the fact that we've never found a permanent CF...as KW had always believed it was going to be Anderson, and that simply hasn't worked out (no new Anderson thread here please!) He's 25 and has barely two years of service time in the bigs. His cons are well known. There's plenty of time for him to (even if he never becomes good) improve in areas where he can be considered below average. Even if he doesn't improve, he's 10 times better than anything we've trotted out there the last three years. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 08:12 PM) At the time of the trade, I said he would be nothing more than Mike Cameron. Which is a good playerbut nothing special. Very good defensive CF with good power but will always be limited to the high strikeouts. LOL. You say that like it's nothing. Does a CF have to be a combination of prime Willie Mays and Ken Griffey Jr. to impress people around here? The guy is young, athletic, has plus power/speed/defense (many believe Young should've won a GG last year). And most importantly room to grow. I'd gladly live with the K's and low OBP considering all the other things he provides. In the last three years, we've trotted out Brian Anderson, Rob Mackowiak, Darin Erstad, Jerry Owens, Luis Terrero, Nick Swisher, and a 7-8 years past his prime Griffey Jr. to CF. And we've got people harpin' on Young's K rates in a futile attempt to make the trade not look as bad? Amazing.

Markakis signs extension with O's
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 07:13 PM) Is Weiters that OF they have coming up pretty soon? He's a catcher. And the consensus best non-pitching prospect in baseball right now. He's DOMINATED in his two seasons in the minors. He's a favorite to win the ROY. Most think, and I agree, that he'll be better than Joe Mauer.

Markakis signs extension with O's
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 06:42 PM) Luke Scott is pretty decent too. I really like Adam Jones a lot though, he didn't beat the world in his rookie year or anything but I think at the very least he made it clear he wasn't going to be a bust. The O's might stink right now. But they have a chance to be damn good in 2-3 years. Matt Wieters is pretty much a lock for stardom. They've got 3 of the top 30 or so pitching prospects in all of baseall (even if only two of them pan out. They'll be in good shape). And they've got the 5th pick in this year's draft. Meaning they can either add to their plethora of stud pitching prospects, or go with one of the top position players and add to an already growing young core in that department. I think they should take SS Grant Green from USC if he's still on the board when they make their selection.

Markakis signs extension with O's
Good move for the O's. He and Adam Jones (I think Jones is going to be a star) should be holding down RF/CF for years to come. Felix Pie is the x-factor. At 24, he's hardly a bust. The tools are still there. If he breaks out in a new environment, wow, they'll have a terrific outfield for years to come.

Official 2008-2009 NFL Thread
QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 04:21 PM) Skill positions are much more important than G or T positions. WR is probably the 2nd most important position on offense. RB's are a dime a dozen IMHO and that's another position in which you could find a 1000 yard rusher in the 2nd round. Good WR's are hard to find and when you could get a sure bet who's a star WR, you do it. The dropoff between 1st round offensive lineman and 2nd round lineman is not as big of a difference to sway you to pick that over a position player that is of need. If you need both, always go skill position 1st, then lineman 2nd. And in the case of the Bears, their skill positions are what really sucks right now minus maybe LB core and they're not all that great either. They need a QB, WR, SS, FS, and two CB. Boldin would be a much bigger boost than whatever OL in the 1st round. Not saying they will trade for Boldin, but it would be much smarter to do so. We don't seem to agree on anything when it comes to football. lol. I can't believe you think WR is the second most important position on offense. But you're entitled to your opinion. I'm not against trading first round picks for the right guy. I just don't think Boldin is that guy. And you just stated that the Bears need a QB. So I'm going to assume you don't think Orton is the answer. So why would you trade a first round pick for a WR when you don't even believe in the current QB? We already saw what happened with Moose (I know Boldin is better. But Moose was coming off a fantastic year before we signed him. And he was only a year or two older than Boldin at the time). You better be damn sure you have your QB in place before you start trading picks for 30-year old WRs. We can go back and fourth all day on what position is more important. But if you look at the years in which we were good this decade (2001, 2005, 2006), you'll see that we had at best average WRs but above average offensive lines. I don't think there's any debating quality o-line is much more important than quality WR. But like I said, you're entitled to your opinion.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 02:46 PM) I agree 100 percent with all of this, but hoping for a trade is a waste of time with John Paxson running the show. He seems to think all of these players are his first born and won't part with them. I think John has until the end of next year to get this mess straightened out. It all starts with next month's trade deadline. QUOTE (rangercal @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 03:34 PM) he's had as many bad games as Rose has had this year. Gordon is the LEAST of our concerns. +1. I've come to accept that Ben Gordon never has and never will get any respect around here. He's having his best season by a good margin this year.

Official 2008-2009 NFL Thread
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 03:47 PM) I think youre over valuing a first rounder. Even if Boldin is second tier, most of the WR's you could get in the mid first round are going to max out as second tier talent. Then there are the boatload of first round picks who are completely crap and do nothing (Big Mike Williams, Charles Rogers, Troy Williamson and the list goes on). So if you are getting a known quantity in Boldin for only a first round pick, its generally not a bad deal unless he gets hurt or leaves via free agency after 1 year. Boldin also would be the best back up qb the Bears have, haha. And I don't want a WR in the first round. Other than Michael Crabtee, there's no WR worth taking that early. We need offensive/defensive line upgrades more than we need a WR. If our defense is even above average last year, we probably win 12 games. And our o-line is pretty much old and decrepit outside of Beekman/Williams. And if Orton sucks as bad as everybody seems to think, what impact is Boldin really going to have anyway? And you can't ignore his age and injury history.

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 02:46 PM) Drafting an OLineman in the first round is a waste unless it is your only need. Other than that, you could find a Pro Bowler in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Boldin a 2nd tier WR? Have you checked his numbers? http://www.nfl.com/players/anquanboldin/profile?id=BOL283010 Keep in mind, he also suffered through the likes of Josh McCown. Well golly gee! I didn't know it was THAT easy! I obviously disagree with you. And I can easily say the only way you trade a first rounder for a WR is if that's your only need (which obviously isn't anywhere near the case). Other than the QB position, the most important element to a quality offense is having your offensive line solidified. If a guy like Michael Oher, Jason Smith or Duke Robinson is available, that's a no-brainer, IMO. And, yes, Boldin is second-tier. You're not possibly suggesting he's in the first-tier with Fitzgerland, Johnson and Smith, are you? And he will be 30 soon and has a history of injuries. No way in hell you give up a first rounder for him.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 02:43 PM) Chris Young's offensive stats look a lot more like Corey Patterson's than those of a "stud CF" to me. Everyone still talks about him so much like he's such a special player, but come talk to me when he puts up an OPS+ of 100 or more, his batting average is over .250 (he's never hit for a high average at any level btw, I don't think he's even broken .280), or his OBP doesn't look like a bottom of the order type hitter. I guess then I can be upset about what a great loss he is. I did say potential. And he's already had more impact for Arizona (one of their top 2-3 players when they won the division in 2007), than Javy had for the Sox (none). I will admit he did regress a little last year (still had 42 doubles and 22 HRs). But at 25, combined with his obvious tools, his upside is limitless. I won't play the role of ultimate chicken little. Because I was cool (not thrilled, but cool) with the trade when it happened. Never thought Brian Anderson would flop like he has. But the trade will always irk me.

If you're gonna trade a first rounder for Boldin (I wouldn't. Not for a second-tier WR who apparently acts little b**** when he doesn't get his way), you better be sure you can upgrade at least one of the offensive or defensive lines through FA.

Soxtalk's Biggest Loser Club
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 16, 2009 -> 01:57 AM) Are people still doing this? If so, I'd like to get back in on it. I've been hitting the gym hard lately and have been eating better and drinking tons of water. Since I've come to college, I've kind of let myself go, so I'm definitely as dedicated as ever right now. Three things: Fruits, Veggies, Cardio. Absolutely load up on your fruits and veggies. It's pivotal when it comes to weight loss. I take in 3-5 fruit servings a day. I eat a salad and at least one other veggie with dinner every night. No exceptions. If I have to go to McDonalds just to get a salad, so be it. If I have to go to the local grocery store just to get a can of spinach, so be it. I can't even begin to describe the impact this has had for me. And continue to drink that water. If you're trying to lose weight, nothing will shed the pounds like cardio. Not saying you have to do as much as me. I'm not normal. lol. But your workouts should consist of at least 60-90 minutes of cardio. Obviously with the weather, you can't do anything outdoors. So just hit up the treadmill. Make sure you've got your ipod or mp3 player handy. Cardio can indeed at times get really long and boring.
