7/31 White Sox v. Royals
Will 8 runs be enough?

Duaner Sanchez
QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 06:23 PM) If he can get back in time for the playoffs... Sanchez, Heilman, Hernandez, Linebrek, and Wagner will be a pretty damn good bullpen for them. Looks like Linebrink isn't going anywhere. I went to a Padres Board and multiple posters said Linebrink is staying.

Oliver Perez
Is Linebrink to the Mets official? I don't see it anywhere. Looks like Linebrink isn't going anywhere.

MLB Trade Deadline Thread 7/31
QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 06:35 PM) Never said it was, but if you look at the 2003 Angels, the 2004 Marlins, and even last year's Red Sox, sometimes that's not enough and you continuously have to keep improving the roster. Which is what Kenny went out and tried to do in the offseason. It's not his fault 4 of the 5 guys in the rotation are pitching well below their career averages. Dump a starter? For who? What do we get back? What team do you know that's shown interest in Vazquez or Garcia? Should Kenny just dump these guys off for trash because they've struggled for a few months? Throw McCarthy in the rotation when he's been in the bullpen all year? Inconsistent at that. Then you've got a hole in the bullpen. You're making it sound a lot simpler than it really is.

MLB Trade Deadline Thread 7/31
I'm just glad this madness if finally over. The trade deadline, or should I say the 3 weeks or so leading up to the deadline, has just become a bunch of hype and a major distraction the last couple years. 98% of the rumored deals you hear don't even come close to happening. I'm not surprised that nothing even remotely close to a blockbuster happened today. I also agree 100% with Cheat. There was NOTHING more Kenny could've done to upgrade this team. This team is built on starting pitching. When 4 of your 5 starters are all having below average years, you're gonna be in trouble. You can't go out and replace an entire starting rotation. We could've traded for Soriano, Ortiz, Manny, and Pujols -- we'd still be in trouble with our starters performing so poorly. Kenny has done his part. He upgraded (atleast on paper) the rotation, offense, and bench. He turned Joe Borchard and Javier Lopez into Matt Thornton and David Riske. He went out and got us the set-up man we needed. He went out and got us a back-up catcher (although I'll concede I would've like somebody else besides Alomar). It's all on Ozzie and the players from this point. If we don't get it done, it won't be because Kenny didn't make a move at the trade deadline. It will be because our starting rotation didn't come through. Period.

Schmidt
http://chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4082885.html It appears Oswalt is no longer on the market. I can't believe he ever was.
-
Schmidt
I think the Astros hate us too much to deal Oswalt to us. Even if we presented them with a good offer.
-
Schmidt
The Mets would be foolish not to trade Milledge and whatever if they could land Oswalt or Schmidt. They're almost a lock to get to the World Series as is. Adding one of those two would not just make them a lock to get there, but actually win.
-
Interesting Statistics
I still think the Tigers are gonna hit a patch in where they just don't play good baseball for 2 weeks, if not longer. If they dont, and they go on to win 110-115 games, they deserve it.

have the yanks forced KW to make a move?
QUOTE(chisox08 @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 01:32 AM) with the yanks aquisition of abreu and lidle do you think it forces KW to make a move because we need to focus on the wild card and the yankees are leading it right now, with us close behind. the abreu addition helps them greatly and they were able to get a #4 starter out of it in lidle. this will probably have a huge effect on the wild card race and i believe we need to do sumthing to "keep pace" so to say. wut do you think. Not at all. Nothing Kenny does or doesn't do will be impacted by what the Yankees do. If there's a deal out there that makes sense for the Sox, it'll happen.

There will be no more trades for the Sox
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 11:24 PM) Not sure where he got it from but a friend of mine sent me this: If Schmidt is available, well I hope Kenny is trying his best to get him. I'm almost positive they would want McCarthy.

Abreu and Lidle to the Yankees
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 07:01 PM) The White Sox don't scare me unless Buehrle, Garland, and Garcia find some sort of 05-like form either. Pitching, pitching, pitching. Whoever has it will go far in the playoffs. Whoever does not will probably not even make it. No argument here. That's why the Twins should be the WC favorites until futher notice.

There will be no more trades for the Sox
QUOTE(Wedge @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 07:00 PM) yes, but if we don't replace 4 pitchers with ERAs over 4.8 that means KW and Ozzie value something other than winning.. LOL. Man, I never thought I would see the day somebody would question whether Kenny frickin' Williams wanted to really win or not. Kenny is the Michael Jordan of GMs when it comes to will to win.

There will be no more trades for the Sox
QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 06:54 PM) If there are no more moves made, it's just a signal KW and Ozzie prioritize something else (pride? ego? golf buddies?) over winning. I'm not sure how anyone could look at this roster, especially the pitching staff where 4 fishing starters have ERAs above 4.80 (which is beyond horrible), and conclude with a straight face that this is the best roster in the AL. Realism? There's nobody out there we can realistically get (starting pitching wise) that's better than what we have right now. Yeah, not like the Yankees kicked our ass without those 2 guys and have a better record on the season than the White Sox. Last I checked, one series didn't make a season.

There will be no more trades for the Sox
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 06:45 PM) Matsui and Sheffield are gone for the whole season, or at least until September, I read. And even then, you don't know how good they'll be once they get back. See Derrek Lee. I'm much more concerned with the Twins than I am the Yankees.

The Andruw Jones Thread
QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 06:38 PM) Because he is way too streaky at the plate. He has no plate discipline. I believe he has around 10 walks ALL SEASON. He has a terrible OBP. Sure, he's got pretty good fielding skills, but sometimes I think he makes lazy throws and causes errors that REALLY should have been outs if he would have just took his time. Tito, c'mon now, out of all the problems this team has now, you call out Uribe? We're fine with Uribe at SS. He's been one of our best hitters since June 15th.
-
Abreu and Lidle to the Yankees
I'm with Rowand. If we play like we're capable, we're fine. The Yankees won't "scare" me unless Randy Johnson reverts back to his pre-2005 form. He's been utter garbage since joining the Yanks.

There will be no more trades for the Sox
QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 06:19 PM) They are old. Talented, but old. Just as soon as they get healthy, they can get unhealthy. You have an amazing gift for presenting the dark cloud of any situation. Amazing. However, there is another side to everything. And not enough of that other side is presented on SoxTalk. Nothing personal, you know we are on good terms and totally respect one another, but it needed to be said. LOL. Sorry Fathom, I've got to agree with Jim here. You would never know you were "Mr. Pessimism" if we were to simply delete all your posts regarding the Sox and solely look at how discuss other teams.

There will be no more trades for the Sox
QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 06:16 PM) If the Yanks get healthy soon, their lineup of Damon, Jeter, Sheffield, ARod, Giambi, Abreu, Matsui, Posada, and Cano is going to be tough to overcome. That literally is an all-star lineup. I'm not sure I could create a better lineup on Xbox.

There will be no more trades for the Sox
QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 06:08 PM) So would I, but that's because the products of the trade market, not because I believe KW is content with this team. No doubt about it. I was one of the few people last year (Jason and Dbaho as well) that defended KW for not getting a deal done last year. I knew it had nothing to do with him being "content." The trade market is awful these days. One, with the WC, so many more teams feel they're in it. So that alone makes it tougher to trade. Then you've got all these bloated contracts that, unless you're the Yankees, nobody wants to take back. Then the teams that are willing to trade ask for too much.

There will be no more trades for the Sox
QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 06:06 PM) I agree, I don't think anything major will happen but I do think there's a good possibility something minor will happen. Tweaking the pitching staff or tweaking the bench. Yeah, I agree with you here.

There will be no more trades for the Sox
QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 06:04 PM) [green]Oh, then we know it's true![/green] Come on, you can't possibly believe that. I believe it this time. I'd be shocked if something major happened tomorrow.

There will be no more trades for the Sox
QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 05:56 PM) It sucks, but its true. Ozzie and KW truly believe that this team as is, is good enough to make the playoffs. Some fans may think its just KW blowing smoke over the radar screen, however, I believe them this time around. This team is going to sink or swim as is. Right now it doesn't look to floatacous. Then so be it. I don't know what more we could ask of Kenny anyway. On paper, this team is ridiculously talented. Everybody wants to ship Javy and/or Freddy out for a carton of milk. It just doesn't work that way. If we trade them, it will be during the offseason. Will just have to hope these guys turn it around.

Zito?
QUOTE(BobDylan @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 05:41 PM) Think what you must. I'm talking about how people like to overrate prospects. Until the Sox get nailed like San Fran and trade away Nathan and Liriano for Pierzynski, I say keep trading them. Who's overrating them? Is overrating them not wanting to lose them for a player that we would have little to no chance of resigning after the season? A guy that hasn't come anywhere close to repeating his career season FOUR years ago? A guy that would in no way guarantee us a spot in the playoffs?

Hey I am back on Soxtalk, and got a question...
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 05:27 PM) Mikey is also sporting a spiffy 1.53 WHIP this year. The guy has no control of his pitches, I have no clue how he keeps his ERA so low. It's called the National league.
