McCarthy to start the season in bullpen
QUOTE(2nd_city_saint787 @ Jan 26, 2006 -> 07:38 PM) I hope this doesnt end up like neal cotts, yes im happy that cotts is a top reliever in the game but wasnt he going to be a starter??? Even if BMac is great in the pen i sure hope they dont keep him there. This is not a permament thing.

garland a fluke or not?
As many have said, as long as he keeps the walks down, he'll be fine.

Has anybody heard of a Chris Mihm for Nocioni trade? That's the talk on multiple Laker boards. Let me just say I will buy a gun and shoot John Paxson myself if he makes that deal.

Off-season grades
Kenny is such a genius. I didn't even realize this, but the Sox off-season got A's from Yahoo.com, Espn.com, Cnnsi.com and Foxsports.com. Way to go, Kenny!

Thome+Konerko=World Series
QUOTE(Beltin'Bill @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 09:53 PM) My sentiments exactly. Thome + Konerko could also = record number of double plays for the WS offense. The Sox won 3 division titles on paper before they scrapped the long ball strategy because they couldn't win any tight ball games. I would say my two biggest concerns for the WS this year is lack of bullpen depth and loss of speed. Guillen wanted to get faster and more defense in the offseason. I'd say they got slower and lost some leather. I know they effectively traded Everett for Thome which is not a huge dropoff in speed, but they also gave up a lot of defense and scrappy baserunning with the loss of Rowand. I have confidence in Guillen, but I am concerned that KW fell back into his back habits of obsessing over stars past their prime. What speed did we lose? I know Rowand stole like 15 or 16 bases, but he was hardly a speed guy. Everett had speed? Maybe 5 or 6 years ago. As far as baserunning, Rowand was flat bad, especially in the playoffs. We will miss the defense. But from everything I've heard and read, Anderson is no slouch in cf, either. I'm not as worried about the pen as I was a month ago. Assuming Hermanson is healthy, and I haven't heard any negative things of late regarding his health, we have a pen of Hermanson, B-mac, Politte, Cotts and Jenks. That's pretty damn solid right there. I'm hoping, as is everyone, that one or two of the minor leaguers/invites can step up and fill the last remaining 1 or 2 slots. Depending, of course, on if Guillen elects to go with 11 or 12 pitchers. As far as KW obsessing over guys past their prime, I totally disagree with that. Thome just didn't wake up one day and forget how to hit. The guy averaged 48 hr's and 120 rbi's from 2001-2004. He clearly wasn't healthy last year. The elbow surgery he had last year has taken care of that problem. And everybody has said that his back is feeling as good as it ever has. I have no doubt in my mind that KW never makes the trade if he or any of his people had doubts about Thome's health. People just need to start trusting KW more. He's more than earned it.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 04:27 PM) Yeah I have, it's been coming from our end, and I'd do it in a second. I don't think Joe Dumars is that stupid though, even though he'd prob make us take Carlos Arroyo in a deal as well. Dooling and Cato for Milicic and Arroyo has also been mentioned. I can dream of a Darko / Dwight Frontline. Thanks. I think Dumars would be foolish to give up on Darko so quickly.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 04:24 PM) Sigh, and Steve Francis to Indiana was looking so appealing. Will be interesting to see if this sparks the Queens into action though. Rick Adelman has been a dead man walkin lately. Dbaho, have you heard anything about a Darko for Cato trade?

81 Points For Kobe
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 03:58 PM) Yes, I'm not saying they wouldn't benefit...but the key thing I'm trying to get across is that it's impossible to say that they would benefit to the point that say a Lebron or a Kobe Bryant has. You can take a very good player and even with proper training discover that he just can't be better than very good, or you can take an average player and with proper training turn him great, just because of the different ways their bodies will react. Oh yeah, I obviously know that. There's a lot more to being a good or great player than just training and such. My argument was basically with Qwerty. He seems to dismiss Wilt's time because players aren't as big and strong as they are today.

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 03:32 PM) I think a big part of it was Peja being a FA too. The Pacers are hurting w/ cap issues, this gives them some more room to work with after the year. I still don't think we're going to come close to winning it this year. Artest gets to be the franchise's goat for us in that sense again. Well, if not for the Pistons, I think yall would have a pretty good chance.

Indians acquire Jason Michaels for Arthur Rhodes
QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 03:29 PM) I don't see why Michaels will "probably...be very mediocre in Jacobs field". I think Crisp will be better, but it's not a huge difference. I don't see how anyone can't be worried by the Indians after the pressure they put on us at the end of last season. They took a big hit to their rotation, the pen is a little worse, but this is still a very good team. They're without a doubt a very good team. But after the magnificent job Kenny has done this off-season, I think we're clearly better.

Cubs sign Wade Miller
QUOTE(whitesox1976 @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 02:31 PM) To me Chicago became a White Sox town on October 26, 2005. No doubt about it. It's a White Sox town where it counts.

Cubs sign Wade Miller
QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 01:16 PM) If you take the fact that it is the Cubs out of the equation, then signing Miller is for that amount is a good low risk, potential high reward gamble. Just because it's the Cubs does not make this a bad move. Are you implying that White Sox fans have a biased hatred for the Cubs?

Lemieux Retiring Again
QUOTE(AirScott @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 01:48 PM) not recently, he's sat out the past month or two with some heart condition. in my opinion, he is undoubtedly the second best hockey player to lace 'em up, and it is disappointing that we didn't get to see what he could do alongside Sidney Crosby. Lemieux and Gretzky (mainly Mario, because when I started playing Gretzky was in his twilight years) were the two reasons that I started playing hockey in the first place, and now the torch has been completely passed to guys like Kovalchuk, Crosby, and Ovechkin. I had no idea that until today he was still an active player. Shows how much I follow hockey.

81 Points For Kobe
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 03:19 PM) You know what? I'm going to disagree with this. The reality I think is much more that different bodies respond differently to different amounts of training. When you take a person who was good at one time, and give them modern weight lifting routines, you will not necessarily improve that person as much as you will other players. This is my Barry Bonds theory - a lot of people took steroids in baseball, but only 1 of them turned into Barry Bonds. A lot of them got better, but a lot also fell apart. It's hard to predict how each and every body is going to react to the stresses of workouts, weight training, etc. Some bodies react differently to the training than others do. I can see what you're saying. I mean, there's no exact way to know how players of the past would respond to some of the stuff you have today. Maybe being bigger would actually hurt their games? I have no idea. But nobody can deny that players of today have many advantages that players of 40 years ago simply didn't have. This goes for all sports. Lebron didn't come out the womb lookin like he does now. It's my opinion that a majority of players from the past would benefit with today's training methods, ect.

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 03:17 PM) Good deal. At least we have someone else of value in the lineup now. The whole sitting out thing didn't make things better. I think this is a good deal for both teams. Peja's star in Sacramento had clearly fallen over the last couple years. However, I think he's a good fit for you guys. It's almost like getting a young Reggie Miller. Without the supreme clutchness.

QUOTE(The Critic @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 11:42 AM) http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2304087 Too bad, but time waits for no man. I liked Mario, he's been through a lot but kept fighting. Jesus, that dude was still playin?

Coach Skiles had the 7th best performance in...
How the hell is that Robinson game in the top 10? That game was bulls***. It was completely distorted to get Robinson the scoring title. How the hell is Jordan's 69 point game not in the top 10? Not only did he score 69, but he had 18 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals and a block. Still to this day the best individual performance I've seen in a regular season game.

Cubs sign Wade Miller
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 10:46 AM) That's the key. But a $100 million payroll team like the Cubs shouldn't have to depend on so many "if healthy's" like Kerry Wood and Wade Miller. A $100 million payroll team also shouldn't have a starting outfield of Matt Murton, Juan Pierre, and Jock Jones. That's pathetic. No argument from me. The Cubs suckage makes me laugh. But hey, It's still a Cubs town.
