MLB Rumors predicts Sox sign
I didn't want to start a new thread, but the New York Post predicted where the top 30 free agents would go. Only Masterson would sign with the Sox at 2/$18 million. Others that the Sox might be interested in: - Martin to the Rangers 4/$60 - Sandoval to The Red Sox 5/$100 - Martinez stays with the Tigers 4/$60 - Headley stays with the Yankees 3/$48 - Aoki to the Rangers 3/$24 And the Cubs will sign both Scherzer and Lester for a 8/$200 and 6/$140, respectively.

Decision Review: Reed for Davidson
QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 10:51 AM) I'll keep it short: I don't think you should trade a guy if there's absolutely no one to replace him. Reed was a suitable closer. I happen to think he was a good 25-year-old closer (40 saves in 2013), many say he was average to bad in spite of his save totals. The same people say Hahn had a replacement in Nate Jones, who got hurt. I feel about Jones the way many feel about Reed, that he was never the answer. The guy the Sox got for Reed (Davidson) doesn't bother me near as much as we traded a guy who was not effectively replaced. I think the Sox reached 2 over .500 at one point after a good amount of games this past season despite having no bullpen. My contention is not having a closer and other bullpen pieces finally was the reason this team got buried back into oblivion. Yes, I'd feel a lot different about the trade if Nate Jones replaced Reed and been lights out with 30-50 saves. In actuality, nobody replaced Reed. As far as Davidson, he appears to be a huge bust, but some insist he had to be devastated after not getting the job in spring training and it sent him into a season-long tailspin. Maybe he'll make the team next spring training and be the answer at third for 10-15 years to come. We shall see. I am not a Reed hater, though. Even though many on here say he sucks, I like his save totals. So what if he has some shaky saves. So does Greg Holland of the Royals. He puts guys on base in many of his saves but usually gets the save. So far I'd say Arizona won the trade; that could change if Davidson turns into a good to great hitter/fielder. Excellent, non-emotional post, Greg. And I think you summed it up well in saying that if Davidson turns it around and becomes the guy the Sox hope he'll be the trade will look a lot different. Also, you are right when you say that many thought Jones would be a suitable replacement.

Possibly the best Walking Dead episode of the series...at least over the past couple of years. Let's hope it didn't set too high of a bar and the next few weeks are let downs.

2014 TV thread
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 10:10 AM) I mean that's the huge problem with the show and why it went from great to bad - she's supposed to be complicated, not terrible, but everything she's done makes you despise her. It's completely unbelievable that all the things she did in seasons 2 and 3 would result in her staying with the CIA and not in jail. But here we are. And I think the lack of a connection with her baby is understandable, and a very real issue for some women, but they didn't need to go that extra step. And no I don't think the baby has DS. She's just an ugly baby, as most are. She's not just "complicated". She has a mental illness, and I think the show has done a good job displaying that. People with bi-polar disorder have massive mood swings, especially when they are not on medication or don't take the medication properly. People can be a danger to themselves and others, and she's no exception. She has tried to hurt herself, she has jeopardized missions, and she has come close to hurting others. The lack of a connection with her baby is very understandable, and as you said, it is a real issue. But even women who do not already have a mental disorder can be llike this. Throw in bi-polar disorder, and that sort of issue can be much worse. I don't think the show is trying to make people like her. She's not an easy person to like. Anyone who has had experience with people with mental disorders can tell you it's very difficult. The show does a good job displaying that.

MLBtraderumors previews theWhite Sox offseason
Reading that reminded me of how great the Sale and Quintana contracts are. I think one of the most important (if not THE most important) thing to address is a LH power bat. Beyond that, the bullpen needs a lot of help. Should be an interesting offseason.

Greg Walker
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 1, 2014 -> 08:18 AM) While it is always the hitting coach's fault the team can't hit, just look at this: Greg Walker, idiot 2011 White Sox .252 avg. .319 OBP Jeff Manto, idiot 2013 White Sox .245 avg. 302 OBP Todd Steverson, genius 2014 White Sox .253 avg. .310 OBP 2014 White Sox without Jose Abreu .245 avg. 300 OBP When BJ Upton continues to suck, who will be the next to blame since Walker will be watching TV? So what you're saying is, Jose Abreu needs to be the hitting coach.

Addison Reed trade from DBacks' perspective
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 08:10 AM) I know you won't listen, but you give up a closer for a potential 30 homer 3B with six years of control, every.single.day.of.the.week.

Batting Average Leaders
Another factor is what type of player you're looking at, or more specifically, what their role is. A lead off guy with a good BA and a better OBP with low power numbers and a lower OPS is great. But a guy who is supposed to be your number 3 or 4 hitter with low OPS but a good BA doesn't look as good. I coach little league baseball, and although it doesn't compare to managers at the ML level, I still look at what type of players I have. I have the speedy guy who gets on base a lot (hits or walks) leading off followed by a contact hitter. The #2 hitter doesn't necessarily need a high BA, rather just needs to make a lot of contact to move the runner(s) over or in. Then I plug in the guys who can hit for power at 3 and 4. Since I've been coaching, I've begun to appreciate the other stats beyond BA. And then you look at the player as a whole. Running, defense, situational awareness, etc. There's a lot more to baseball than BA, but it still has to be one of the top stats we look at.

A season ending poll
A TP poll. Nice. Oddly enough, I work in a facility that manufactures toliet paper (and paper towels, napkins, and facial tissue). Unfortunately, we don't get the stuff for free. We don't make name brand stuff, but I can tell you that the process for making Charmin and the off-brand stuff is the same. When you buy the name brand stuff, you're paying for advertising. All that being said, I still buy the "ultra" or "premium" off-brand stuff.

Flowers and his magic glasses
If the Sox could find a decent back-up catcher who can hit righties, I'd be fine with keeping Flowers. Even with his very erratic year, it looks like he'll end up around .230 - .240 with maybe 15 HRs. It would be nice if he could settle in as a .250 hitter who is not as streaky (streaky could be his Twitter handle), and maybe he will. This was his first time handling the entire season as the primary catcher.

Hawk
Steve Stone is a very smart baseball guy, and when he's not being talked over by Hawk he tells the viewers some pretty interesting stuff. It's annoying when Hawk will ask Stone a question about pitching, and then as Stone answers Hawk will go off on a tangent.

Hawk
I'd like to hear more Stone and Wimpy. Hawk has been slipping a bit. Yesterday he thought Avila made a nice catch on a pop-up, but he dropped it. Stone had to eventually say, "He dropped it."

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 10:33 AM) The Last Ship finale was last night and I really enjoyed the show. Some episodes were slow due to the limited locations (the ship) but now that they're at where they're at, I'm looking forward to what is going to happen next season. It was one of my favorite summer shows. I forgot that last night was the season finale. I was bummed when at the end they said returning in 2015.

Will Sanchez be starting at 2B today? I don't know much (anything) about him. Is his defense that good?

Why the A's should trade for Adam Dunn
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 01:56 AM) What do u mean? People on this board despise Danks (as a pitcher, not a human being), at least the majority do. I disagree. Most of us are disappointed, but we're also aware that he suffered a major injury and has had to change his approach. However, I would think that most posters would be okay with a Danks trade that resulted in a middlin' prospect and a bunch of salary relief.

Flowers and his magic glasses
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 10:13 AM) The reality is that a guy that hits .250 doesn't get a hit every 4th AB. He'll streak at .350 for a while and .150 for a while, and it will balance out to .250. True. Average vs. normal. My point was that Flowers seems to be more streaky than others who might hit .250. He definitely seems like the kind of player who goes on a .400 tear then follows it up with a prolonged stretch of .150.

Flowers and his magic glasses
One thing I think we've all learned about Flowers is that he's streaky. Overall, though, he's looked better this year than in past years. I agree with a couple of the previous posters in saying that if Flowers can end up being a .240+ hitter with some power, I'll take that along with his pretty good defense and familiarity with the staff. Another thing I've learned is that you can count on this thread being bumped or a new thread being created every time Flowers goes on a hot or cold streak.

It's Mid-August
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 05:43 PM) It had nothing to do with facial expressions. I didn't even see any of those from my mlb.com. I despised him as a player. But since he's left I've said nothing bad about him. The Dunn talk disturbs me. Don't you think if anybody wanted him he'd be gone by now? Hahn is not a dummy. He also works for an owner who doesn't like paying guys to play for other teams apparently. No other team wants Dunn on the payroll, thus good luck to him finding work next year. He will easily find work next year if he wants to play. At a minimum he could be the LH half of a DH platoon. Or, as someone pointed out in another thread, there are several teams getting no production out of their DH positions, and Dunn would be a nice upgrade for them. The only part of your post that makes sense is saying that the Sox don't like paying players to play with another team. That might be the only reason Dunn hasn't been traded. I'm sure there was interest from some teams, but obviously there wasn't a good enough deal proposed.

Adam Dunn retiring after this year?
He's 41 HRs away from 500. Let's say for argument's sake he's 35 away at the end of the season. I could imagine him wanting to stick around to get 500, but it would probably take him at least 2 years, especially if he ends up in a platoon situation somewhere. Edit: I saw that he said he wouldn't stick around just to hit 500 HRs, but I'm not sure if I buy that. If he has a chance to play with a contender, that might change things.
