2010 Fall TV Thread
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 13, 2010 -> 09:30 PM) South Park did it up tonight! Great episode. I knew what was going to happen when the turned to Bin Laden, and I still laughed. I would think there will be complaints about the episode, but if you're watching South Park nothing should offend you.

Edwin Jackson Megathread...
The money is the only thing I don't like about the deal. I think Jackson is a better pitcher now and may be the better pitcher years from now when you look back. Regardless, I agree with what greg said. I hope he has a kick ass year in 2011.

Opt-In Fire Protection
I briefly heard about this when it happened but I didn't pay much attention. Now that I've read about it, I'd have to agree that it's a terrible policy and the guy is an idiot. He says he forgot, but you never know. Especially when he made the comment about he thought they would put out the fire anyway even if he hadn't paid. I'm surprised the firefighters didn't act anyway. If TN doesn't have a Duty to Act law, it still surprises me. But $75 a year? And the guy didn't pay. And the fire department let the house burn down...over $75.

White Sox in win mode, not rebuild
QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 13, 2010 -> 12:35 AM) I'm really surprised we weren't able to dominate our division for years after winning the WS. I really thought we were "built" to do so. Years later color me disappointed and surprised that it's the Twins that have the winning the division thing going for them more than us. Of course a lot of people also thought the Bears would continue to roll after '85. I like the reloading rather than rebuilding. The article mentions our starting pitching staff. On paper ... it's awesome, phenomenal, etc. In reality it has to start dominating ... at least in divisional games. Our great staff on paper sucks on many occasions. Now that Thome flamed in the playoffs and we can calm down about this year's awful DH by committee demanded by Ozzie, maybe the team can rework that position and perhaps add some youth somewhere? It's alarming Ozzie wants Omar back. If he comes back, Oz won't be able to resist making him the starter, not bench guy/tutor. And Juan? Yeah on paper he had a B season, but are any of you excited about Juan? The other scary thing is our team really had a good record this year. That's kind of scary cause we finished six back of Minnie and we were never in the wildcard hunt. I guess we all can keep cheering and hoping. But the question marks remain huge as the Sox try to beat the playoff choking Twins and the 3 mediocres in our division. Didn't you all think we'd be pretty dominant in the Central after winning the WS rather than getting beat down by the Twinks many seasons? I'm not too concerned about Omar coming back. He was a very valued addition this year, and he started so many games because Teahen got hurt. Maybe he still would've started a lot once they saw how bad Teahen's defense was. I hope that Morel is the starting 3rd baseman (and he should be unless the Sox made some sort of unexpected trade or signing), and Omar will be fine for filling in at 2nd, 3rd, and SS once or twice a week. But then what do they do with Teahen? RF? *shudder* As far as Juan, I like him more than a lot of people on this board. I think he's overpaid, but some of his salary is paid by the Dodgers. He's a decent lead-off guy, and his defense was surprisingly good. He's not great, but he's what the Sox have for now.

"HOT" Thick Steak Chili
This recipe makes a lot of chili...your could half all of the ingredients. 2 tablespoons whole cumin seeds (or 1 tablespoon cumin powder) 1 pound bacon, diced 4 pounds beef chuck, trimmed and diced 6 medium yellow onions, peeled and chopped 12 cloves of garlic, diced fine 13 jalapenos, seeded and chopped 4 teaspoons salt 1 jar of chili powder (normal sized jar...4 oz I think) 2 tablespoons oregano leaves 2 28 oz cans whole tomatoes 2 bottles of Sam Adams Honey Porter (or another dark beer) 6 heaping tablespoons brown sugar If you use cumin seeds: Toast the seeds in a 375 degree oven for 10 minutes, then set aside. Heat the bacon in a large pot until clear. Add the meat, onions, garlic, and jalapenos. Cook over high heat until the meat is brown. When the meat is brown and the onions clear, add the rest of ingredients (except for the brown sugar). Crush the tomatoes in your hands and add the juice. I usually simmer it for at least 4 hours. The longer it simmers, the more the flavors mix (and the hotter it gets). About 1/2 hour before you're ready to take it off the heat, add the brown sugar. You can add less or more...the brown sugar cuts the heat just a touch and adds a fantastic sweetness to it. Serve with corn bread, sour cream, and cheese. If you like hot chili, this should be right up your alley. It also freezes well fro leftovers!

Catch All Anything Thread
QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 11, 2010 -> 08:54 PM) So, after years and years of mocking these people, I have decided that this year, I will join them, as I get up early AM for Black Friday sales to get a new widescreen TV. I always say I'm going to get up and find a deal. One of the years I actually will. I'll peruse the ads on Thanksgiving and make up my mind...and then try to actually wake up early.

2010 Fall TV Thread
QUOTE (3E8 @ Oct 11, 2010 -> 12:35 PM) I believe Midge was reintroduced purely as an inspiration for Don's SCDP newspaper ad. Her addiction and painting seemed to fuel Don in writing about why he's quitting tobacco Good point. He stared at that painting for a while and then wrote the letter. I hadn't really put that together until you said that.

"HOT" Thick Steak Chili
I haven't found a hot chili that I really like yet. My biggest problem is that I don't like chili with beans, and a lot of places only offer chili with beans. Although it's not super hot, Lindy's makes a decent beef chili. I have an awesome recipe for a Texas chili (no beans) that uses chuck, bacon, a dozen jalapenos, chili powder, and honey porter. It's pretty hot, but has a very nice flavor thanks to the beer and some brown sugar at the end.

2010 Fall TV Thread
QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 11, 2010 -> 11:46 AM) I had trouble following some things last night. Midge? Really? All the way from the first 3 episodes of the series? That probably confused a lot of people and didn't they end badly? I read up and the ending sets up an interesting finale. Yeah, Midge threw me for a minute. My wife asked who it was, then I figured it out when she started talking about art. I wonder if anything else will come of that, or was that just another piece to show wkat kind of man Draper is. The finale should be great. Looking forward to that.

2010 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 8, 2010 -> 10:17 AM) Well, to be fair, bad umpiring did affect your team in the playoffs, and as a direct result, they won a World Series. I'm just glad I'm not an Angels or Astros fan. Good point. I guess we always look at the bad calls that adversely affect our team. Bad calls that go the other way are usually ignored.

2010 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 8, 2010 -> 06:43 AM) Not sure where this should go, but how about all the blown calls going down so far? - Golson clearly catches the ball in the 9th, ump rules it a trap - Michael Young's checked swing non-call, hits a 3-run homer the next pitch - Berkman gets a 4th strike, crushes a big double next pitch (found 31 bad ball/strike calls by Wendelstedt last night) - Posey is out stealing, called safe, scores the only run in a 1-0 SF victory It's like deja vu all over again from last year I was just thinking about the bad umpiring so far. It has to be a concern. We saw enough bad umpiring during the regular season (although most of what we saw was the Joe West crew being assholes). I'd be pissed if those bad calls were affecting my team in the playoffs.

Twins Collapse with Home Field Adv.
QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 7, 2010 -> 10:40 PM) It's amazing they were hot the whole second half, the entire way, until they clinched. Then they finally sucked and the Sox went 9-2 down the stretch to finish only six back. I know that has nothing to do with their current faceplant, but why the f*** couldn't Minnesota have their cooling off period at some other point the second half. Unless a miracle happens, Minnesota is toast. I guess their fans can blame the loss of Morneau but they've been w/out him a long time. Remember that the Sox went 8-2 in their last ten and MN went 2-8. I think their streak just continued into the post season. You're right that it's very frustrating...if only they had slumped about 2 or 3 weeks earlier. The sad thing is that if the Sox had won the central, they might be the ones down 0-2 to the Yankees.

White Sox targeting Carl Crawford
I'm not surprised that the Sox are "targeting" Crawford. Why wouldn't they? The trouble is, like many other posters have said, the Sox most likely cannot compete with a few other teams out there that would spend a lot more to get him. The Sox may very well make an offer, and they may actually offer more years than they typically do. But, I can't see them offering more than $12-$15 million per season. A few other teams out there wouldn't hesitate to offer $18 million+ a year for 4 or 5 years. Someone else mentioned that Dunn would be a nice consolation prize. Absolutely, but he'd want to play 1st base. Maybe the Sox will go after him as their new 1st baseman. That would probably mean Paulie's not coming back though. Can you imagine how small Dunn would make the Cell look? Wow.

LET'S MAKE A LIST - OCTOBER '10
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 6, 2010 -> 10:54 AM) If anyone voted Blair Witch or Paranormal Activity I may consider putting them on ignore. I did include Paranormal Activity, but not The Blair Witch Project. I thought Paranormal was a much better movie than Blair Witch. Things that go bump in the night scare me more than monsters and the like, and I thought they did a good job with Paranormal. I think I may have forgotten some other films, though. I'm sure I'll kick myself when the countdown comes out.
