Say hey, It's Kotsay
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Mar 26, 2010 -> 11:49 PM) You’re operating under the assumption that his spring training numbers are going to transfer directly into the regular season. This is almost certainly not going to be the case, and if it is it likely won’t last. His career numbers are trending downward, his split stats tend to agree with the theory that this is a terrible idea. If this doesn’t work, we can move him, that’s all well and good. But the implications of this not working are us losing a couple of games that we shouldn’t have lost. That doesn’t sit well with me. Well, I am saying that his numbers MAY transfer directly. I did note that more than likely he will end up being a solid bench bat. What I am saying is, if he's hot, use him until he's not. Let's just hope that Ozzie realizes when he's not hot anymore.

Say hey, It's Kotsay
QUOTE (Ranger @ Mar 26, 2010 -> 06:39 PM) Somebody else here wrote something along these lines that I think is the most important thought in this entire thread. Unfortunately, I'm too lazy to go find it, but: Why is anyone freaking about this? Two things about this are true...just think about it: 1) If Kotsay is batting third, and he fails there, they aren't going to keep him there and he will have a pretty short leash. and 2) If Kotsay is batting third, and he stays there, that means he's hitting really well. In which case, why would anyone complain about a number 3 hitter that's tearing the cover off the ball? But really, the most likely truth is: 3) Kotsay really isn't going to bat third and Ozzie doesn't mean what he's saying. And even if Kotsay does bat third, it will hardly ever happen. At any rate, none of those three are worth getting worked up over. Thank you. I was surprised as I read this thread at the hate and venom and threats and vomiting. You're absolutely right. One of these three statements is correct. And if Kotsay is hitting the ball well and continues doing so, let him play. I agree that he's a great bench bat, and more than likely that is what he will end up being primarily. But why not use him if he's hot. Who cares how it happens if the Sox win some damn games.

How many games will this team win in 2010?
I'm going to be moderately optimistic and say 86-88. The biggest factor is health. Barring injuries to the key players, I say the Sox win the division by 2 or 3 games.

Healthcare reform
I suppose I'm one of the many who are on the fence regarding the healthcare reform. The main reason I am on the fence is that, like a lot of people, I am uninformed. The problem right now is that much of what you see on social networking sites and blogs has become misinformation. I have a good health insurance plan with my employer, one that includes $3 prescriptions and a one-time coverage of $500 for Lasik. And I suppose that may be the biggest reason why I'm on the fence about the bill. What makes me shake my head are the conservatives who are spreading the misinformation and spouting off quips like "I'm moving to New Zealand!" I want to tell them that New Zealand has government run healthcare, but the argument is not worth it. I'm not saying that all those opposed are uninformed, but I have a sneaking suspicion that if a republican president had introduced a healthcare reform bill, the same ones that are screaming and crying would be lauding it as the best thing ever.

Mediocre blogger calls for Ozzie
I never paid much attention to Mariotti but often heard quotes from his writing. Then I saw him on Around the Horn and decided that if I ever saw him in person I would most likely kick him in the nuts...only because of the incredibly stupid look on his face. I figure that if he goes down with a nut shot he wouldn't be able to say much, except for some squeaking and gasping.

JD is not a good defensive RF
I read the thread title, rubbed my eyes, and it was still there. I made a pot of coffee, chugged it, and thread was still there. I slapped myself a few times, and it was still there. So, I've decided to see a doctor...maybe I had a stroke and I don't know it.

Winter/Spring 2009-10 TV thread
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 19, 2010 -> 11:13 AM) The character of Bullock was far from stoic. He lost his temper repeatedly and beat people within inches of their lives. You could say he was quiet for sure, not stoic. You're right, I used the wrong adjective. He had a tendecy to hide his emotions until he exploded. His Justified character seems to be a bit more open...and he warns people before he explodes.

Winter/Spring 2009-10 TV thread
I was impressed by Justified. I figured it would be good, but it was better than I thought. Both Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins are great. I had read a review that Olyphant's character was a lot like his Seth Bullock from Deadwood, but I think he's better in Justified. I thought his character in Deadwood was too stoic and didn't have enough dialogue.

Andruw Jones spring training mean anything?
I'm trying not to get too excited, but maybe this rotating DH idea might work.

Andruw Jones spring training mean anything?
After reading this thread I came to the conclusion that Jones will be good or he will suck. Seriously, though, I am encouraged from what I've heard about him. He could work his way into playing a lot this year, and if he returns to close to the Andruw-of-old, our DH dilemna may not be as bad as we thought. The best part of him playing well is the money spent on him. I agree with the sentiment that spring training doesn't mean a lot. I personally think ST is way too long (but that's me talking as a fan, not a player). Spring training serves many purposes, including pitchers getting into form and hitters working on their swing. But a major component of ST is checking out the players and seeing who is going to make the team, and of those who will be getting more playing time. If Ozzie puts a lot of stock in what he's seeing from Jones, we will probably see him in the lineup a lot more than we would have thought one month ago. Will Jones hit .290 and smack 30+ HRs? Probably not, but imagine a guy who signed for half a million hitting .265, belting 20+ HRs, and driving in 75+, and most importantly helping to solve your concerns at DH. I like the sound of that.

The Finer Things In Life
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 9, 2010 -> 01:14 PM) Anyone else ever found the New Belgium 1554? Dark beer they're putting out now. I tried it 2 weeks ago and found it very good. It's one of my favorites. Extremely flavorful and easy to drink. If you're a fan of dark beer, this is one of the best.

They could go back to the shorts and collared shirts. I agree that the uniforms are fine. And, I like the black alternates but agree that they are over-used.

Netbook question
I've got an Asus netbook, and I love it. It's perfect for travelling to hotels and for when my kids are hogging the computer. I bought it a while back when netbooks were just getting popular. So, I'm sure there are better, faster ones out there. But for what I use it for it's great.

Miracles can happen, Twinkies may consider trading Mauer
I wouldn't want to see Mauer is a Yankees uniform for several reasons. First of all, their lineup would be unbelievable. Secondly, I've always liked Mauer (even though he's consistently killed the Sox) and his going to the Yankees (for more money) would diminish my respect for the guy. I can't imagine the Twins would ever trade him, but if he sticks to his supposed guns about $25 million a year, you never know.

What Would Your At-Bat song be?
The song itself wouldn't make a whole lot of sense, but I always liked the beginning of Somebody Told Me by The Killers. It has a good "getting pumped up" sound to it.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 10, 2010 -> 08:26 AM) how many 33 year old career minor leaguers have been brought up to the majors to be a DH? You could probably count them on one fist.
