  1. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 02:28 PM) Wait. What? You are completely missing the point. Said person was not "out" when the author "outed" said person. I think the real questions are: 1) Do public figures deserve privacy protection? 2) Does it matter if the public figure has deceived for potential profit? 3) Should we ask the media to filter stories for us? I dont really know what is right here, I do know that when in doubt Id rather not let the media filter stories.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 02:23 PM) The paragraph I just wrote said nothing of that. It asked whether the writer could have written a perfectly solid expose on the putter without the gender issues coming up at all. Frankly, yes he could have. I'd have to find the link again but I already saw a version of that where someone else had rewritten it in that way. You want the media to filter what they tell people. Id rather they dont. Even if that means something bad will happen, id rather we are told the truth, than lied to/omitted because our media overlords didnt believe that we could handle it.
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 02:17 PM) People already said in this thread that no reporter would agree to that, and a version of that was supposedly offered by Ms. Vanderbilt during their last conversation. Then dont do the story? I have no idea, I get people to agree to all sorts of s*** all the time. If a company wanted to interview my client and wouldnt do it on my terms, they arent getting s***. They want the story, they play by the rules. She had no obligation to divulge any information. And once again, had she not deceived people about her qualifications, this likely would have gone no where. Basically you are arguing that there should be some inherent rule that we dont discuss sex in an article. Sorry but thats not how life goes. If you are a public figure, which Dr V chose to be, then expect youre life is going to be open to public viewing. Id be a lot more concerned if this was just random off the street, a lot less concerned that this was someone trying to deceive people to raise money. If Madoff had been a christian not a jew, id expect theyd report it. Had he been in a gay love affair, id expect theyd report it. Had he been born Bernice, Id expect theyd report it. The truth is the truth, and sometimes bad things happen when we report/tell the truth. Its much better than allowing the media to lie to us for whatever nonsense they make up this week (for our protection, for their protection, for whatever).
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 02:13 PM) If the author had written the article about how this person had been hiding details from their background, fabricated potentially their education, wouldn't respond to questions about their education, and came up with credentials that couldn't be checked...would that not have been a quality article? Why does the media have to lie about a fact? There are consequences for being deceptive. Well never know how differently this had gone if Dr V had sent an email that said: "Dear Grantland, thanks for your interest in my product. Id love to talk to you about it, but I want to first have you sign a NDA about certain issues. They will not be related at all to golf, the putter etc. If this is acceptable Id gladly discuss anything youd want." Instead she sent a bulls*** email about classified nonsense. Basically she wanted the press, she just hoped that she could control the exposure. Thats extremely stupid, you dont cover the truth with a lie, it ends poorly.
  5. Thered be a lot more issues if everything else was true and the only secret was transgender. Then maybe there should have been some discretion that Dr v is hiding her identity.
  6. And storm names are fun. OH s*** ITS BONITA
  7. If you dont want people prying into your public life, stay out of the public eye. Dr V could have done all of this without ever having to create "Dr V" as a persona. So it cuts both ways, you cant want fame and anonymity it doesnt work that way. Are the reporters wrong for doing their job? That seems like an existential question that I cant answer for you. I dont know, its not like they went down the street knocking on doors trying to find a transgender person.
  8. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 01:03 PM) How many of the players they were in play for were 25? Did they have a glut of prospects with ETAs of '14 and '15 before? It's all about age and timing. Tanaka should be stepping into his prime years next season. Putting huge money into an unknown FA at the same time relying on unproven prospects is a really risky idea. If the Cubs payroll is $100mil, theyd be putting roughly 20% into a player who has never pitched an inning in MLB and still have to find another 20+ players to actually be a contender. It would make more sense if this was 2015/16 and the Cubs were a piece or 2 away.
  9. That tweet is worthless. There is a huge caveat saying that its "spurious rumors", might as well go back to my talking cats. The problem is that Tanaka's camp is keeping it extremely tight to the vest and Im guessing most teams believe any sort of leak could possibly spook Tanaka. Thus there is 0 information besides speculation and rumor. The Cubs stuff doesnt make a lot of sense, they havent been blowing anyone out of the water offering contracts lately, what point would it make to do it now? What is the plan, where are they going? Itd be just sheer desperation. Pretty much seems like the writers are trying to make a story to increase clicks, and Cubs fans are the best at taking the bait.
  10. The idea is that all tds would be 7, and a team would have an option for 2.
  11. Anyone with half a brain should be guessing LA. Thats not insight, thats just not being marginally retarded. It may not be LA, but I could post "My sources say LA" and be pretty confident Im going to wake up right Weds.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 07:06 PM) My opinion hasn't changed at all. If he signed with us, it would be pretty awesome... A scary contract, but awesome. I just can't find a scenario other than "because" that makes the Sox the winners. I have a similar feeling. The good news is that at least the Sox were in it and sounds like were competitive. That is great news moving forward because it means the Sox have some $ to spend. I like how people keep rationalizing why LA isnt a better spot etc, just because of summers and they wont be living here in the winter anyway. Yeah that makes sense. Maybe they want to move to the US semi-permanently and want to live in LA where it fits BOTH of their needs. Tanaka's wife is several years older, theres a chance shes running the ship. My gut feeling is that if the money is close, hes a Dodger. LA makes sense for a lot of reasons and NL is much better for a pitcher than AL. Plus LA is spending crazy and hell likely be on a contender for most of his career. Im sorry but outside of money, there is no good reason to pick the Cubs over the Dodgers.
  13. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 05:15 PM) Again, how many Japanese pop stars are currently working in LA? As far as I can tell when looking through my Directv, there aren't any Japanese programs produced in the USA. She is going to do her work in Japan. If she supposedly prefers LA for her career, she is fooling herself. How many artists record in LA? How many non-American stars try and break into the American movies/music/etc. Its just nonsense to dismiss it. It may be a reason, it may not be a reason, but if you are in the Entertainment industry, LA is a much better location than Chicago. I love Chicago, I hate LA, but those are the facts and theres no point in posting on a message board if we arent going to be honest with ourselves.
  14. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 05:08 PM) What is the need for Japanese pop stars are ther in LA? I am guessing none. LA is arguably the entertainment capital of the world, so if she cares about her career shell probably have way more opportunities living in LA than Chicago. Not many aspiring musicians/movie stars move to Chicago, thats just a fact.
  15. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 05:01 PM) a frequently touring pop star and a frequently travelling baseball player shouldnt worry that much about where their home is Actually it makes sense a pop star would want to be in LA...
  16. My offer is that either you accept to play for the White Sox or you join the Cubs and become the best simulated game pitcher in Japanese history. TORA TORA TORA
  17. QUOTE (dayan024 @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 04:15 PM) Chris Cotillo ‏@ChrisCotillo 7m Re: Tanaka...have heard his agent and team execs involved keeping especially tight seal on talks. Lots of reporting seems to be speculation This is why you just wait and see.
  18. Its just the hilarity of the internet these days. Anyone can post something random, its just who cares. Even if hes got an inside, hes going to be at what, 24 hours in front of the real news? This isnt like D-Rose is going to be back tonight so you better watch... Too soon?
  19. Because honestly youre more likely to find the clue to Tanaka's signing in a My Little Pony episode than on twitter at this point. This is not an American signing where a player/family slips, Tanaka is likely playing this extremely close to the vest so there is almost no chance of a direct leak. Anything you are seeing now is more likely subterfuge from the American clubs. Lets be realistic, only Tanaka and his agent know until he makes a decision and he has very little incentive to let it be known he is down to 2 teams, unless he is trying to get more bidding.
  20. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 03:32 PM) this is like following a chat transcript of teenaged girls talking about teenaged boys OMGZZZ DID YOU HEAR WHAT HE SAID?!?! NUH UH HE SAID THAT?!?!? CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?? HE IS A LIAR, FOR REALZ. HE DIDNT MEAN THAT You forgot the part where I consulted my talking cats and got the real information. Youre just like the rest of the liberal media, cant admit that a talking cat may know more than you.
  21. My sources have been telling me all week that Tanaka is just playing the Cubs. Who cares if my sources are 2 cats that you cant understand, those b****es got insight.
  22. Who cares how good he is at investing when hes made over $100mil at his regular job.
