QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 02:07 PM) Half a game does not a quarterback make. They were going up against the worst defense in the league (well, maybe 2nd behind the Bears). McCown looked good, but I really doubt he keeps it up. I doubt McCown can keep it up. But the difference is when Jay went out this time the wheels didnt completely fall off. The Bears offense still looked professional. So given Trestman's alleged pedigree, I actually think its interesting that a different QB than Cutler will get a shot this year.
-
I doubt they are that bad. Even with McCown at Qb they have 2 fantastic WR's a plus rb and a very good te. They will score points. They may even make the playoffs. Part of the reason I think Jay may not come back is that I think Trestman can actually get this team to score points without him. Obviously if the Bears cant score, then Cutler should be brought back.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 01:33 PM) Pretty much this. Matt Flynn signed like a 3/$18 deal with Seattle and proceeded to lose the QB competition. He was dealt to Oakland where he proceeded to lose the QB competition and get cut after having to play 1 game. He signed with the Bills and is now backing up Thad Lewis. That's what you're getting for that price. Maybe a guy like Colt McCoy. Do people really think Colt McCoy can cut it as an NFL starting QB? So you pick out arguably one of the worst FA signings in history (Matt Flynn) who was terrible in college, yet you dont mention guys like Terrel Pryor who beat out Matt Flynn? Interesting use of statistics. Jay Cutler is over 30 and just does not fit a rebuilding team. Unless we are living in a dream world where the reason the Bears are losing is offense not defense. Then yes, I agree we need more offense. But right now, Im not sure that even if the Bears had the 49er offense from the 90s that they would win a lot of games with this defense. And that is the problem. Patch working is just going to further delay the inevitable. The Bears are going to be bad for a year or 2, I just cant really see how you fix that defense faster. (edit) Unless you get rid of cutler, spend money on the defense and hope to get a QB that can utilize the fact that the Bears have 2 great WRS. Then maybe, but really the defense just seems to have gotten bad. And Im not sure 1-2 players can fix it over night as I feel some of the core may be done.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 01:19 PM) It's going to be a lot harder for the Bears to win without an NFL quarterback. Have you even given Trestman a chance to show what hes supposed to be great at? Before we start saying the Bears need Cutler, why not have an open mind and see what Trestman can do? I was extremely pessimistic about the guy, but when Cutler left yesterday it almost seemed that Trestman got more comfortable play calling. Just in terms of economics its hard to put so much money into Jay Cutler. Now if this was the Bears from 10 years ago, with really young defense and a QB away from multiple super bowl attempts, sure maybe you over spend. But it just seems that the Bears have a lot of problems right now and are going to need time/money/patience to fix them.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 01:11 PM) 200? 5 days a week X 50 weeks a year (assuming 2 weeks of vacation) = 250 days. Well if Im in charge Im changing society more than just giving a few extra dollars per hour. If you notice I presumed a 8.5 hour work day, yet gave more days off total. I just think its better to work a little longer every day and get more days completely off, than to work slightly shorter days but have more of them. And whenever I make my arguments I always tend to err on the side of caution, so by presuming 200 days, I dont get anyone arguing that no one works that much, etc etc. That way I dont have to fight with someone who comes in and says "Well 250 days counts in sick days, etc etc"

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 12:54 PM) I don't like Cutler, but the Bears would be f***ing stupid not to at least franchise him. There's no way in hell they get anyone via the draft or FA that's 1/10th what Cutler is. Without a QB, you're nothing in this league, that's especially true when you have no defense. Add in crazy Brandon Marshall potentially going crazy if his best friend leaves and it's just not worth the risk. Franchise him, draft a QB Trestman thinks he can mold into the next Steve Young and maybe move on in 2015. Also, f*** the football gods. f*** Angelo for so many terrible drafts. f*** Lovie for being mediocre and wasting a golden opportunity to win with a great defense. God. Dammit. I just think that its going to be hard for the Bears to win if they are giving Cutler $15mil per year. With the way Trestman wants to run offense Id much prefer a solid QB in the 5-7mil range with the other 10mil being spent on offensive line or defense. I just am not a big fan of spending that much money on a single player in a sport with a salary cap. The exceptions are Hall of Fame QB/RB, etc. Also Im just not sure where this Bears team is going. The defense just seems like the wheels fell off. Itll take a draft or 2 to replenish. Might as well suck really bad next year and enter the Winston sweepstakes. /dream

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 12:19 PM) ...and speaking on this thread, this is actually a very interesting subject. I know quite a few people that view me as rich, and I'm really not, but it would be impossible to convince them of that. In comparison, it may appear that way, but a lot of the reality behind it is overlooked. First, my wife is a stay at home mom, we have two kids, etc. Outside of my mortgage, I have no debt. Now, an interesting thing about Facebook, Twitter, and other such social media is it allows us to do is silently observe people. It doesn't take long for me to realize why I'm viewed as rich because I always seem to have money, while they view themselves as poor. All one needs to do is look at their timeline to see where they spend all their money ... which is eating out seemingly EVERY DAY. The last place I ate out at was Buffalo Wild Wings...29$. Meanwhile, I see picture after picture of these "poor" people at Blackhawks games, Bears games, restaurants, etc... Yes, I'm rich then. Because I don't spend more than I make. The worst part ... when your success is attributed to luck. Yes, my company pays me what they pay me because I'm lucky. That's what it is. When I refer to rich people, I mean a very certain subset of American culture. They give their kids $100k cars for their 16th birthday, they give their kids golf carts when they turn 13. They spend more money on a 13 year olds party than most people spend on a wedding.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 12:12 PM) So a minimum wage is like 50k/year. Seems reasonable to me. 200 days of work a year, that is $250 per day, 8.5 hour work day = $29 per hour Its possible, but unlikely.

Cutler is done as a Bear. He never made a ton of sense for Trestman's system anyways. They will get a guy who is smart, has great accuracy and gets rid of the ball quickly. Basically the anti-Cutler.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 09:15 AM) A friend and I were debating the whole living wage argument this weekend and we basically got down to this issue. What exactly does the bolded mean? What is "everything?" What is "enough?" Individually, we all could easily live on 10k a year - no fancy house, no cell phone, few clothes, etc. You could do it, but obviously it would be a life without luxury (and no kids). Everything is a standard middle class life. Cell phones, computers, tvs, 3 cars, summer camp, winter vacation, college.

For Trestman's system a guy like McCown isnt the worst. Hell get a lot of designed plays with short passes.

OSU may end up being the team who is most hurt by the way the Wisconsin -ASU game ended. -
If I stick my head in the sand then it has to be night out because its dark.

I am watching Undercover Boss right now and it made me think of this thread. A cashier can be smarter, harder working, better person, than the CEO, but due to circumstance just didnt have the opportunities. In a better world even the cashier would make enough money to give their kids everything they want. The bleeding heart hippy side of me (that you all hate) hopes that I can one day make it happen.

Dont say I never did anything for you steve.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 11:21 AM) But should we really be giving people $15+/hour for something that's typically done by HS kids with a couple of hours of training? Which is why there is never a good way to determine what a "fair" wage is. $30k for a single human you can live off of. But if that human then decides to have children (multiple) that $30,000 doesnt go as far. But is that the govts job to make laws for? Or is that the humans job to make responsible decisions? I get laws, I get protecting people. But at some point you have to hold people accountable for their own decisions.

QUOTE (Jake @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 11:01 AM) I wonder what a country like Australia does with such a high minimum wage (around 15 USD)? It's almost like they were the only major economy to not go into recession I dont know enough about Australian law or economy to answer.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Oct 15, 2013 -> 05:17 PM) And how was it?!?? I am hoping to make a Chicago trip in the coming year and Three Dots is at the top of my to do list. I hope they get it right as far as the quality of the classic Tiki drinks goes. Love their signature sea urchin ceramic mug. It was good, obviously more expensive than a normal bar. We got there at maybe 7-8 and there was a line (mostly just for show). Id suggest getting a table because otherwise it can be awkward standing with the large drinks. I got a banana daiquiri because well usually I cant get a drink like that without being judged at a normal bar. We also had one of the big drinks, but didnt get the one that was one fire. Overall Id say its a good place, thee drinks take a few minutes to make and kind of annoying when there are people sitting at the bar.

Eh its a double edged sword. Higher cost of labor = jobs moving to where lower cost of labor is. Add in the fact that our labor market is artificially controlled through immigration and you have a situation where the labor market is not operating properly. Basically you have labor supply artificially reduced which equals higher cost. You then are also putting a floor. But then again, Im pretty much the only person who actually believes in laissez faire capitalism anymore. So if we are going to run this bastardized protectionist economy, we might as well just do whatever. (insert general grumbling and annoyance)

The good news is that they will play basketball this season, well see who is right. -
It wouldnt be tactful to say that you won, but at the end of the day the Democrats absolutely won this round. Both sides took punishment, but if its a boxing match, its at worst a 10-9 round for the Dems.

Doh didnt realize Kendrick was late October of last year. Magna Carta is pretty vanilla, its not really blowing me away. Wayne is hit or miss I feel, sometimes his songs are dynamite, other times hes just on another planet. Im also thinking about going backwards and doing other years as well. Im going to talk with my friend. The main reason Ive been thinking about this is I was listening to Stankonia the other day and I wondered if people even remember Outkast anymore. Which is kind of ridiculous seeing as retrospectively it appears Outkast was way ahead of their time.
-
As of now my 1 and 2 are Kanye and Kendrick. Im waiting until I see their concert to make a final decision. I saw Mac Miller live and wasnt terribly impressed, but Im going to give his album and Big Sean definite consideration. Right now Im repeatedly listening to Magna Carta and I Am Not A Human Being 2, just to make sure that Im not missing something. And I assume Eminem is going to be in the running.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 03:33 PM) Come on SB, you know that 14.whatever figure is a joke. Bo Ryan teams get away with murder, especially at home (even though I agree with you they don't really tackle guys like other teams *cough* Purdue *cough*). Those figures actually do matter because all of those teams play home and away games, so the stats should normalize, especially when you can go back through all the years of Bo Ryan basketball with similar results. The argument though was concerning the actual article. And Wisconsin does not foul that way. If you believe they get away with murder (which they might as they are pretty much taught how to use their lower body to get advantage) its because they dont foul with their hands. Wisconsin is a physical team, the reason they dont get a lot of fouls called on them is they dont reach and slap, which are the obvious fouls that refs call. Thus if there are more foul calls for hand slapping, the last team it will impact is Wisconsin. If the rule change was to emphasis lower body contact that would be cause for concern for Wisconsin. Or even the charging rule change.
