Movies that were as good as, or better than, the book
BobDylan replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in SLaM
QUOTE(mreye @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 09:55 AM) The Shawshank Redemption. Granted, it was just a short story and not a whole book, but... While the movie is very good, the short story is still exceptionally better. Reason being, Stephen King does a much better job explaining the trial and why Andy was convicted. In the movie, he's just convicted and we're not really told why. -
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 07:47 PM) "No Country for Old Men" looks damn good. The Coen brothers have struck out with some of their recent projects but this one looks like it could be special. I saw it last night. One of the best movies I've ever seen. Almost everything in that movie is done to perfection.

High School Parents Trying to Ban Book
BobDylan replied to LowerCaseRepublican's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 02:21 PM) By the way, not to be missed here... I actually read Prince of Tides, it was required reading for me in high school for some class or another. I know exactly what scenes these people are referring to as obscene. ***WARNING _ SPOLIERS FROM BOOK*** The scenes in question are about a brutal attack, where a house is broken into, people are assaulted, and a young boy is sodomozied. The young boy is a main character, the main character really, in the book. But that's just it - the scene is not meant to be some glorification. Its about how bad that was. Similar to this, for example, I would rather have my 12-year-old kid watch Saving Private Ryan than some Schwartzenegger bullet fest. Why? They are both violent, but one puts violence in its proper context. The other glorifies it. I just wish parents would try to be a little more intelligent, and see past the surface of things. Kind of like the idiots from the Christian Brothers who banned their parishoners from reading the Potter books because they encouraged sorcery. YOU ARE MISSING THE POINT. The device is not important - its meaning is important. Oh, and, one other thing... an ELECTIVE, COLLEGE course???? And they want a book banned? Come on. Thank you. -
QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 01:44 PM) niiiice. i haven't been convinced to move from Tiger yet. I'll wait for the bugs to get out (normally thats a non-issue with Mac), but I've only had Tiger for like 10 months and I still am making love to it everyday. Boy, I know some make use of that CD Drive, but I guess others really make use of that CD Drive.

QUOTE(bmags @ Oct 23, 2007 -> 04:16 PM) oh no doubt, i'm just worried about potential lawsuits against the members. Granted i didn't have too many albums from there, just stuff that was tough to find elsewhere. I don't think it's very likely they'll open up lawsuits against many members, if any at all. The one's that may become targets are those who've uploaded close to a terabyte of music (which I wasn't even remotely close to) and the people at the top. But with 100,000+ members, it'd be pretty difficult to nail them all, or even 10% of them. And what they're saying about it being a "pay for subscription" site, they're wrong. Yes, donations were accepted by the adminds, but nobody was forced into it. The investigators have very little idea how the site worked. This isn't the first time a big piracy site has been shut down by the Brits... the last time, all they could get out of it was a slap on the wrist and a $300 some fine. And it appears the man they arressted today was already released -- for now. There really is not much they can do about piracy but develop a webpage for MP3's that has very cheap downloads. $15 for a CD is not worth it in the slightest. Nor is iTunes .99 cent song downloads.

QUOTE(bmags @ Oct 23, 2007 -> 03:35 PM) wow i'm so glad i'm not a member anymore. I was a member (until today, I guess) and am pretty disappointed it got shut down. It was probably the best file swaping site ever. But yes, another one will take its place -- and will probably be even better.

Ed DeBartolo's failed attempt to buy the Sox

QUOTE(chisoxt @ Oct 16, 2007 -> 06:49 PM) When you read some of the venom spewed by the moderators in some of the crap that they write (in particular the computer geek and the site's founder), one wonders whay they aren't banned as well. "Totally Biased." -

QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 02:52 PM) LOL at the list of 'banned' from WSI. That site is ridiculous. I got banned 3 times and after the third time I just said screw that place and left. I can't remember why I got banned the first time, but it came without warning of any kind (none of my bannings were preceeded by a warning). The 2nd time I got banned it was because someone brought up politics in a thread (which is forbidden) and I RESPONDED to that poster to get the political crap out of the thread and was banned. The mere fact that I responded to a political comment (I quote the other posters post) though i didn't make one myself was why I got banned. After I had gotten banned twice I tried to really be cautious and then got axed again when during the late season push in 2006 against Detroit I mentioned the Detroit score in a game thread and was sent packing for a week. Basically my post was something like this: -Way to go Paulie...Sox back in it. Dang, Detroit just put up a 2 spot in the 7th. I wasn't the only one banned...anyone else who mentioned our main competitions current situation that night got a week off. So I email the mod and asked what was going on. The interpretation was laughable and I just basically went off and told the dude the way the site was being run was a joke and to just ban me for life to which (upon just checking) they evidentally obliged. LOL. You have been banned for the following reason: No reason was specified. Date the ban will be lifted: Never I have been posting on various sites for years now and have never been banned at ANY of them, except for that one. That site is run by clowns. I made one post at that place and got the boot. I'm pretty sure it didn't include anything Charles Manson would say. -
QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Oct 7, 2007 -> 12:46 PM) I hope he hits many more as a member of the White Sox. Like, 482 more.

I'm trying the marijuana one now. (About 22% in.) I do feel mildly stoned...

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Oct 2, 2007 -> 06:16 AM) My doctor told me to shoot some heroin everyday. I'm thinking he's a quack. Or just trying to further his business, if you get my drift... eh, eh?

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Oct 2, 2007 -> 03:06 AM) Mother Russia loves me, as I do not recall ever puking off of vodka. However, like literally every other kind of booze has made me ride the porcelain roller coaster. Vodka was bestowed upon us by the gods. It's a fantastic drink. That and whiskey are the only I can handle straight. But, I shall say, and perhaps I'm bragging, that I've never chucked up hard liquor. My body rejects beer, praises the hard stuff. By the way, a whiskey and coke is the tastiest drink in the world. I feel sorry for the suckers who drink rum and coke.

I finally cracked and got a 360. I bought Halo and am a first time player. I'm enjoying it so far. But I think Resistance for the PS3 is a better online format (though they're almost the same.) Unless I'm missing something, I can't jump into the middle of a Halo game like I can Resistance and I can't modify the wepon, timer, and weapon damage. So far I'm getting owned in ranked online matches, but own everyone in the unranked games. I just hope CTF takes off in Halo like it did Resistance. I love me a CTF game. Oh, and the game looks great--better than Resistance. Overall I'd give it an 8.5/10.

I thought this was going to be about the band. And then it wasn't.

Buy him a custom made Bartman t-shirt.

The metal rods point to getting high. I used to roll my cigarettes back in the day, but I didn't need any metal rods for that. The metal rods are probably one-hitters. If they're not hollow, he may just use them to "perfect" his rolling technique. I used to use a pen to get a more perfect shape for my cigarettes.

Saw this movie last Wednesday. Visually it looks great. As far as the actual movie goes, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The start and end are very forgettable, there is only one memorable singing sequence (in a movie full of singing), a good portion of the movie makes very little sense and it's achingly long to boot. A positive for the movie: it has a few laughs in it. Overall I'd give it a C-.

7 month old? I wonder if they thought it was worth prison in life to shoot a 7 month old.

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Sep 13, 2007 -> 09:39 PM) The 2nd episode is fantastic so far. The last few minutes of it almost had me on the floor. I couldn't help myself when they first showed Charlie in the green man suit.

I'm skipping class tonight to see it.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 13, 2007 -> 04:40 PM) I have a hard time equating salary with a loss in rights. If there was some cause I can see. In the real world, why ask your 60 year old accountant who has never missed a day of work in twenty years, and no one has seen him take even a sip of beer, for a blood test*? * True story by the way. After a merger the new parent company came in and hit us with random tests. Let's just say some of the tests were more random than others. I understand what you're saying. But, and correct me if I'm wrong here, the rule says a player may not take performance enhancing drugs. If it's clear players are using them, I don't think anyone's rights are infringed upon. It's also clear that not just a handful of people have taken them. The names of dopers just keep coming and coming.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 13, 2007 -> 04:14 PM) I have really mixed feeling on this. I oppose random searches, without some cause, in the workplace. Then I wonder if a MLB Ballpark is a usual workplace. If the cops can not open up your closet without a probable cause, why should we allow someone to open up your vein? But I don't see anyway other than drug checks to assure compliance. The minimum salary in MLB is lucrative as is. I don't need to mention what an average paid player earns. Fact is, they don't deserve that type of money. If they want keep getting that kind of money, pee in a cup every once and awhile and show them some blood.

This is the best show on TV.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 12, 2007 -> 04:04 PM) Public transportation in this country has never been a prioroty, never been world class, never been respected. Which is a damn shame.
