QUOTE(aboz56 @ Mar 26, 2006 -> 10:20 AM) This is somewhat off-topic, but is Willie going to make the Red Sox? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Adam Stern still has 17 days remaining on his 'rule 5' contract, which means he is still technically property of the Braves until those 17 days have been completed. Willie Harris signed a minor league deal and that's where he'll be to start, but there isn't a doubt in my mind if he doesn't come up 17 days from April 1st, he'll be up at some point this season. Even though he's hit so poorly statistically reporters, beat writers, and even Theo are really enjoying watching Willie Harris play, as he's apparently dramatically improved his bunting and base running skills and can 'kill two birds with one stone' as he can play both the infield and outfield. Another thing is he's been very accomodating and has been playing all over the infield and outfield, something he pretty much refused to do in Chicago.

To start: I like it. As it's been mentioned a couple times now, this is a guy who has been a far above average coach in a power conference, and he's been consistent to boot. It's too early to set my opinion in stone, but as I said: I like it.

It really bothers me when people try and connect to somebody whose involved in such a tragic event. Does it really matter if you were in her english class, or gym class? The fact of the matter is that we have lost somebody that should not have been lost, somebody that offered a whole lot to this world, someone who meant alot to many people. It's stupid to slice it and dice it and say 'its so horrible because she wasnt even drinking or doing drugs.' It's so horrible because she is gone, stripped away forever, for no reason whatsoever, period. There is no good that will come out of this, and as a catholic whose preached to believe that everything happens for a reason, I just fail to see the reason or the good. I suppose it can remind us all that life is too short, life isn't fair, and that you can't take life for granted and need to live it to the fullest; I am flying out to Massachusetts in a couple hours, maybe this will be the last time you hear from me. You just simply don't know. Nothing is guaranteed in life. Rest In Peace, Ari. 'Only the good die young'

I am actually quite curious as to what would happen to this guy if he turned himself or if he was caught. He can't be charged with either first or second degree manslaughter and I really can't imagine him getting anything more than losing his privilege to drive for a while. Either way, it doesn't bring back this girl who everyone cherished so greatly. What a depressing day it is at school, where i'm posting from. Everybody crying, not as much talking, I still can't believe it.

Great post, flash. It's hard to sleep tonight with this on my mind.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/custom/...ack=1&cset=true An 18-year-old New Trier softball player died Tuesday night of injuries she suffered when her SUV flipped over on the Edens Expressway while she was on her way home from celebrating a winning season opener. Arianne Chester was pronounced dead just after 9 p.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, according to a spokesman with the Cook County medical examiner's office. Chester was driving a Jeep Liberty about 9:45 p.m. Monday when a car cut her off on the Edens (Interstate 94), near Golf Road in Skokie, state police said. When she swerved to avoid the car, her Jeep struck the rear of a semi-trailer truck, hit a concrete barrier and flipped over. Another 18-year-old woman was a front-seat passenger in the Liberty, but she suffered minor injuries, state police Sgt. Mike Musiol said. The driver of the semi was not injured. Chester was a starting centerfielder and co-captain of the girls softball team at New Trier Township High School in Winnetka, friends said. The team on Monday beat Von Steuben 15-0 in the season opener, said softball coach John Cadwell. Cadwell said the crash occurred later that night, while Chester and a teammate were returning from a McDonald's restaurant in Skokie as a group of friends followed in a second vehicle. Chester sustained a severed spinal cord and severe head trauma in the accident, and had been on life-support before being pronounced dead, Cadwell said. Cadwell described Chester as a bright, giving young lady who was planning to attend Vanderbilt University, where she hoped to study to become a doctor. She was involved in New Trier's Peer Helping program and volunteered long hours last summer working at the school's summer softball camp, Cadwell said. "It's inconceivable that something this tragic has happened," Cadwell said. "She was so young and had so much to offer the world. It's an awful loss." New Trier co-captain and senior third baseman Elise Menaker described Chester as a popular and giving student. "Ari always put others ahead of herself," said Menaker, 18. She said a "steady stream of kids" visited Chester at her hospital bed all day Tuesday. "We could fit maybe 40 or 50 in the room and the rest of the kids sat in the hallway waiting their turn," Menaker said. "When I left, there were still about 100 students waiting to see her." *** Rest In Peace, Ari.

so there are three kids from my high school that frequent soxtalk? strange.
-
Both girls went to my high school, both were the same age as me, etc. Ari, the girl in critical condition, was taken off of life support at 5 pm this afternoon. I wasn't friendly with the other girl, but i've been going to school with Ari for years, and was pretty darn friendly with her. I can't even fathom this happening. I saw her and talked to her yesterday and 24 hours later she's gone, forever. She had earlier finished her first softball game of the year, and as the star of the team, led them to a win. She had a full ride for softball to Vanderbilt University. Absolutely tragic. My prayers are with her family. Excellent story, Brian. Again, I can't even fathom this. Just so sad, unbelievable.

Reds acquire Bronson Arroyo for Wily Mo Pena

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 10:38 PM) More than Marte -- okay. That's a compliment? Ortiz and Ramirez will eventually come off contract -- you're gonna replace them with Pete Incaviglia II? As for Arroyo -- if his st numbers confirm that he's a waste, that doesn't say much for Schilling... But it's different for him, I'm sure. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't really understand whats wrong with what I said. Arroyo had been figured out, he was being hit hard at the most inoppurtune times last season, and everyone who followed him agreed he would be far from a solid pitcher this year. Schilling is Schilling. Beckett is Beckett. Dustan Mohr is Dustan Mohr. Spring Training statistics don't change that. -

QUOTE(chisoxfan79 @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 03:13 PM) This trade make no sense for the Red Sox. Why would they trade a pitcher for for an outfielder? They already have Manny, cocco, and Trot Nixon in the outfield with Ortiz at DH. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It makes more sense for the Red Sox than it does for the Reds. -

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 01:49 PM) Arroyo was better than Clement last season, he's 3 years younger than Clement, and he has a much cheaper contract than Clement. Factoring in salary, I would rather have Arroyo than Clement who definately didn't seem like the same guy after being hit in the head by that linedrive. If Arroyo was "figured out" so was Clement. By the way, Spring Training stats mean next to nothing. Bronson Arroyo: 100 career ERA+ Matt Clement: 98 career ERA+ Meanwhile, Pena has a lot of upside. This definately wasn't a steal for the Red Sox though. This was a good trade for both teams. It looks like the Reds will keep Dunn in LF and start Hatteberg at 1B now. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't really understand what you're saying. Everybody in the American League had Arroyo figured out, and he wasn't an effective option against lefties in the least. I don't know who I'd rather have between the two, but its a moot point. Spring Training stats mean nothing? They certainly shouldn't be weighted highly but it was clear that Arroyo's struggles late last season were not just 'bad starts' after watching him pitch this Spring. Pena has an incredible amount of upside. More than Marte at a similar age and they gave up a player that wasn't perticularly needed. The deal works for both teams but the Red Sox definitly got the better of the deal and with that being said acquired a player with no ceiling in terms of his potential. -

Looking over his splits, I didn't realize just how well he does against LHP's. This guy just mashes south paws, which is absolutely ideal for Nixon. Imagine Coco, Wily Mo, and Trot all in the same outfield. I can already see Dan Shaugnessy with dollar signs in his eyes. -

What people that didn't follow the Red Sox from day to day don't realize is that Arroyo has been 'figured out' so to speak and it was entirely evident late last season and all of this Spring. You sit on his curveball and people were beginning to mash. I hate to see him go because he's such a good kid, but this might be better for him aswell. With all this being said, he did sign the home-town discount this offseason in hopes that it would persuade the Red Sox not to trade him, but with the surplus of starters the Red Sox had, and only Dustan Mohr and Juan Gonzalez as options to spell Nixon, this trade made too much sense. I wish Bronson all the best, and to be honest think this is best for him. I wouldn't want to see him struggle in Boston next year, and facing a new batch of National League hitters will certainly pay dividends. Awesome trade and not just because the Red Sox are behind it. -
Allan Ray. What a player.

I want Arizona to pull a miracle here for my Eagles sake. Miss these!

I was never a fan of this league this season, and one of the reasons I'm doing pretty well in my bracket is for this very reason. With six teams in to start and none making it past the first weekend, was the Big Ten the most overrated conference in basketball this season?
-
Living in the Big Ten market, going to a game in Bloomington, watching the conference tournament, and the two games in the big dance was a decent amount of basketball to form a decently educated opinion of a certain player. I'll take your word for it and hope that he does become the player you and I know he can be, afterall I am now a Hoosier.
-
I have never seen anyone take more ill-advised shots than Robert Vaden. He certainly is a talented kid, but his basketball IQ is comparable to that of a pooper scooper. Hopefully, when he does stay, he will mature and become a more knowledgable basketball player.

Air Force was by far and away the worst at-large team in the tournament and they had eight points in the paint, and no points from the bench and still competed until the end. I wasn't impressed with Illinois' performance at all, but then again, I wasn't impressed with Boston College at all. -
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Mar 16, 2006 -> 08:11 PM) So Gonzaga not doin so well. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> They aren't a very good team.

QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 16, 2006 -> 05:30 PM) Walker's a class act? He hasn't learned to keep his mouth shut in the press, and there's some things about him off the field which are startling. I do think he's a super hitter though, and should start for the Cubs. BTW redandwhite, I'm not attacking your thought here. Rather, I just get annoyed when I hear Walker whine and b**** in the media every other week. As much as I hate the Cubs, I think they'd be better off just getting rid of him. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> What have you heard about Todd Walker? He was lead to believe from upper management that the starting second base job was his and Dusty Baker came out and denied that a week later. What else has he talked about in the paper on a weekly basis? In his tenure with the Red Sox he was always very soft spoken, and talked only when talked to, aswell as being a very popular in the community. So, again, what has he been saying that makes him a bad guy off the field? Your opinion of him on it, isn't in question here.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 16, 2006 -> 05:27 PM) They will. Wichita State is much better than people think, and are being overlooked a bit because of their loss to a red hot Bradley team (I believe it was Bradley) in the MVC Tourney. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> At 1:30 in the morning, this morning, I decided to make two final tweaks to my bracket. Switched to the Hall over Wichita St. and also to Marquette over Alabama. I'm kicking myself, literally. -
I like what Todd Walker brings to the table, the Cubs are stupid to get into a war with such a class act.
