Jesus Colome was looking real good this spring. I'm surprised.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 6, 2006 -> 12:22 PM) I can see how you'd say they'd be superior to the 04 team, but I just can't say that I see them as the best team on paper. If everyone (Foulke, Schilling, David Wells, Mike Lowell, Beckett) was healthy and performed at 100% of their abilities, they're top 2-3 on paper, but I don't have good reason yet to think that they are or will be for the whole season. Especially that pitching staff. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> To each his own. However, the second most talented team in my opinion is the Chicago White Sox, and while the White Sox rotation is better, the bullpens are comparable, and the Red Sox offense is far superior. Thats why I love baseball though, this season will be fun.

I don't know how anyone could possibly think Ozzie is a good in-game manager.
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 6, 2006 -> 09:55 AM) They're also a year older than they were last season, except for Beckett, and well, he was hurt all last year anyway. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The 2006 Red Sox, in my opinion, are the best team on paper in baseball, and possibly superior to the 04 squad. Although the games are played for a reason.

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Apr 6, 2006 -> 02:32 AM) I think they almost HAVE to be better just because of how putrid they were last season. 2005 Red Sox: 24th ranked pitching staff in MLB 19th ranked starting rotation in MLB 29th ranked bullpen in MLB <{POST_SNAPBACK}> How the Red Sox made the playoffs last year with that pitching staff is beyond me. It just shows how good that offense was.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Apr 6, 2006 -> 12:38 AM) One thing Epstein has done (ohh wait, he's not the GM :rolly -- yeah right) is he has created a lot of depth, which I'm sure you know. It seems at every position (except catcher), they have a guy (or, in some cases two) who can fill-in for a month or so if someone went down. I'm still not 100% sold on the pitching, but Boston 2006 is probably better than Boston 2005. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Theo Epstein is the General Manager of the Red Sox. I'm not quite sure what you're referring to, but I definitly agree with you.

I've never thought Ozzie was a perticularly good manager. Infact, I think he's a bad in-game manager. Regardless, He's a character guy, and team chemistry is clearly important proven by last years dramatic White Sox World Series victory.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Apr 5, 2006 -> 10:41 PM) Which is probably about one year. Papelbon will probably be in the rotation next year, if not sooner. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Craig Hansen would be up with the big league club as the closer if he had more than 20 innings of pro baseball under his belt. Papelbon and Lester will be worked into the rotation next season, while Hansen and Delcarmen are added to the back of the bullpen.
-
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Apr 5, 2006 -> 09:07 PM) So is Foulke not the closer anymore? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Francona doesn't say so, but I believe Papelbon has taken over as the closer and will only lose it if he struggles.
-
Francona opts to go with Papelbon, after a beautiful outing by Josh Beckett, and Papelbon succeeds in the most amazing half inning performance i've seen yet this season.

Happy Birthday, Alex.

Being out East for Spring Break, just like every year, I always watch just as much college hockey as I do college basketball this time of year. How college hockey isn't popular here with solid midwest clubs such as Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan St, Minnesota, Miami (Oh), etc. boggles the mind. Everyone is discounting the Eagles against North Dakota, but the same was done last week against BU, and BC beat them 5-0. Go Eagles!

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 03:50 PM) Thank you, Mr Spokesperson/Civil man of the year. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Thank you for offering nothing worthwhile to this conversation.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 08:19 AM) No, I didnt miss anything, in fact the exact quote you just used is what I quoted. You said that the old limit used to be .100, as if that actually applied now. It doesnt. You also said that .133 is a damn good buzz and doesnt qualify as drunk in a vast vast vast vast vast majority of cases. Which cases are these? Do some judges like to say "Remember, the old limit used to be .100, so actually you didnt do so bad."? No. Who cares what the old limit was, it doesnt apply. He was drunk, if the limit was .08 or if it was the old limit of .100. Im not the one missing something here, but that doesnt surprise me. equally as hilarious. No no no, Abefroman isnt joking about a good pitcher being put in jail, he is a hardcore conservative. Whatever. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> All Hammer is saying that many people, myself included, can function normally at .133. He, nor I, are trying to justify the situation at hand, Liriano did the wrongdoing, end of story. Christ, do some people like to argue just for the sake of arguing?

Carlos Lee To Cubs Deal Imminent?????
redandwhite replied to South Side Fireworks Man's topic in The Diamond Club
That is such a stupid website. A trade of this nature will not be done one day prior to Opening Day. I've seen more truthful rumors in my bowl of Alphabet soup. -

If Woody Paige died tommorow, I wouldn't think twice about it. ESPN is a joke of a channel now. I can't watch any of that crap. -
Watch Borchard come out and rake this season..

Just wanted to fix my original comment from last night. In today's Globe, it said that because he has only a certain number of options left that he will have to pass through irrevocable waivers before he can be sent outright to Pawtucket. A real interesting note if you ask me. Sometimes players sneak through waivers, and this appears to be one of those instances. I'll be shocked if Choi isn't claimed by another team even if the Globe seems to think differently.
-
Are there not similarities between this waiver claim and the Ortiz signing?
-
Choi has options left and will begin the year at Pawtucket. Gordon Edes, a Red Sox beatwriter, has been mocking Snow's bat speed all spring saying that he looks better at the plate than J.T. himself does. Snow might turnout to be a pretty poor signing with Choi being the much better offensive option at a much cheaper rate. The Red Sox bench might be changing relatively often this summer.

Julian Tavarez vs Joey Gathright
redandwhite replied to CardsJimEdmonds15's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 27, 2006 -> 05:46 PM) Tavarez is an absolute piece of s***. I don't think even redandwhite would try to argue that with us. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Not to try and justify the situation in Tavarez' favor, but the man is clearly a guy who gives an arm and a leg at all times, a 'rudy'-like player if you will. Those are great qualities to have in a player but when it turns into something like this, you can only place blame on Tavarez. The punch was completely unneccessary and immature, and should never have happened. I don't think he's a piece of s*** because friends of mine who have interacted with him in the past say he's an excellent, down to earth guy, but these situations that put his own teammates (Jon Papelbon) in harms way for potential injury have got to stop. It was wrong, he shouldn't have done it, he'll be suspended for it, and thats that. I just am thankful that noone was hurt. -
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 28, 2006 -> 11:31 PM) I saw that Willie was playing some CF. If he is also learning how to play SS, he would actually have some value off the bench. I still don't see him getting a roster spot with Alex Cora and Adam Stern / Dustan Mohr around. Although I heard that Dustan Mohr might be traded soon. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Dustan Mohr no longer has any place on the Red Sox with the acquisition of Wily Mo Pena. He'll either spend time at Pawtucket or traded.

I do feel sort of bad for Graffanino but these two year deals he's been talking about, I just fail to see. ...Or if two year deals were on the table, I can't imagine he'd have recieved more than the 2.05 million he'll recieve this year. Either way you dice it, Tony Graffanino should realize that he's being payed millions of dollars to play baseball and that the Red Sox did the right thing, even if it didnt go as planned.
