QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Jun 11, 2006 -> 02:31 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> A lot of you seem to be experts and/or know a whole lot more about exercising than I do. So I'm just wondering, what are some good cardiovascular exercises? Biking, running, and jump roping come to mind for me. Any others that would help burn off some of the fat? Ever heard of interval training? I highly recommend it. http://www.buildleanmuscle.com/interval-training.html

QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 05:00 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Woah... I do...? I'm 5'6" 117 lbs as of 10 minutes ago and last time I tested at the Dr's office had 17% body fat and iirc a BMI in the neighborhood of 18%. I was just wondering about running in the morning being more effective. And, again, I currently, most of the time, stop eating at 6 and that's been working for me for several years. Today was day #1 of getting my "fat" self out of bed and running in the morning. I'm sure it was mental, but I did run faster longer. Well then, pretty lady, my apologies.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 04:53 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Resistance bands mainly. Only excercises that expand motion and enhance strength in the rotator cuff. Interesting. I'm shocked that your coach wouldn't have you doing compound excercises such as squats, military press, bench press, deadlifts, hang cleans, etc. You would throw harder if you had more strength in those areas, no? QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 06:32 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Seriously, what are you even talking about. The advice we have been giving was for someone to lose fat around the midsection and become more lean. Thanks for bascially recommending the protein that I said earlier, especially when I said use Isopure post workout which is good for lean mass. And the way you work out does impact the way you look. As high reps low weight do not neccessarily tear your muscle fiber which leads to bulking or rebuilding of muscle tissue. I use pyramid sets when I do weights anyway, and I prefer that method. Your post comes off as argumentative for no reason. There is no right or wrong in this issue, it really depends on how the person responds. And saying that my advice was borderline terrible is atrocious. Your suggestion is to eat carbs right before bed huh? I would love to see if you have ever actually cut or lost weight in your life, not to mention lean muscle mass. Maybe you should read the thread before you give advice. Steff isn't obese, she holds a little fat, as all women past there thirties tend to do. Telling someone not to eat for that long a period of time, and then to run on top of it? Yea, she'll lose fat, but she'll lose everything else she is. Same goes for you, if thats what you are doing. No arguing here at all, I just hope people don't actually stop eating at six and then run the next morning having not eaten for 12+ hours. If you want to build muscle/lose fat, there are other means of doing so than starving yourself. Remember, your body goes into starvation mode after having not eating for three hours, multiply that by four, and in a month you'll be poor condition. Also, I didnt recommend carbs before bed. I suggested cottage cheese, I choose to eat it with pineapple because I don't mind some carbs before bed. I was telling Steff, she should drink a glass of milk, or have a cup of cottage cheese before bed, not telling her to go to McDonalds and order french fries. IsoPure is fine, if you have money to throw down a drain. TRU recommended Optimum Nutrition. It's a superior blend for a fraction of the cost.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 03:51 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah, it's probably a little biased because I'm a pitcher. It's not necessarily bias, it's just plain wrong for someone who isn't a pitcher. It's a compound excercise, and a vital one at that. However, for a pitcher, performing the bench press without some other resistance training of the two other heads of the shoulder, its not useful. I'm actually quite curious, SF1, what does your coach recommend for a pitcher, like yourself?

QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 07:41 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Busted... you got me. Thank you so much R&W... :rolly I just thank my lucky stars it's something I can get help for and not something non-treatable.. like say... a stupidity disorder. What RockRaines was suggesting, is borderline terrible. To maintain lean muscle mass, you must eat a pre-bed meal, something slow digesting. Perhaps some cottage cheese, if you don't mind eating some carbs, milk would be another good option, or if you have muscle milk on hand, thats an excellent option. I was asking Rock if he was designing a diet for someone with an eating disorder, nothing against you, my pretty lady. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 01:21 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> What kind of advice are you giving here? No, Steff does not have an eating disoder, I was simply making her eat more regularly. Which not only helps your nutrition, but also your metabolism. Ssecondly, the reps vs weight discussion is legit, someone who points to genetics is too f***in lazy to work out. High reps with low weight is for tone, low reps, high weight is for mass. If you would liket to gain mass I would try pyramid reps. Start with what you can do 10 reps of, then work your way up to a weight which you can only do 2. Prob around 5 or 6 sets. That should help you with your mass. Also add more protein shakes like muscle milk into your diet. Where are you learning this nonsense? Steff, eating three undersized meals spread over 24 hours all the while having a morning run on a stomach that hasn't been filled in 10+ hours is having her eat more 'regularly' and frequently? If she wants to lose all the lean muscle mass she has, then you're giving some heads-up advice; i just prefer the way Steff looks now to the Ethopian look you're advising her to become. Secondly, the high weight/low reps for tone is not legit. When I get home from work, I'll post numerous studies and information on why genetics and diet make your muscles look the way they are, moreso than training. As for Muscle Milk, I think its a great tool, pre-bed, although it is extremely high in fat. Do not drink Muscle Milk post workout, use a more fast digesting protein powder, the one that TRU suggested, ON Whey or some other type of Whey.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 07:18 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> If I was to change your sched and make it easier for you with better results. I would say morning run, light breakfast under 200 cals, decent lunch around 12, dinner around 6, doesnt matter what size, then nothing but water the rest of the night. Does Steff have an eating disorder? 2 below averaged size meals, 1 normal-big meal? That's just not right, nor should anyone stop eating at six. I can't even imagine not eating past six, waking up the next morning, lets say, 7:30.. and to top it off, after 13.5 hours of starvation mode, you opt not to breakfast and run? QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 04:57 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> First off, try not drinking a case of beer every day. Now, I'm not the kineisiologist or whatever but I'd probably go with the 2nd one. More reps at lower weights will help you tone and burn some of that extra fat around the edges. This is what I do to condition for baseball. Keep up with cardio no matter what though. And you just can't stress water enough. Keep water with you all the time. I'm 6'4, 185 btw. Oh, and bench pressing is WAY overrated. It helps you in no way whatsoever. When are you going to be able to push off of a wall in real life? Never. If you want to improve core strength, do squat presses. High reps, Low weight does not help you 'tone and burn some of that extra fat around the edges.' Your muscles look the way they do because of how skinny or big you are, just like your abs. Genetics determine the size, shape, vascularity, etc. of your body. Good advice on the bench press, it is far overrated, but still one of the superior compound excercises that someone should perform. With that being said, it's definitly an ego excercise.

you can't talk about steroids on this board.

The Cubs appear to be interested in JT Snow. Makes sense with Choi in Pawtucket for the Red Sox and the infatuation Dusty Baker has with some very mediocre players.

Sox Should Make Signing Buehrle Top Priority
redandwhite replied to aboz56's topic in Pale Hose Talk
As a Red Sox fan, 5/65 seems just right. That being because Beckett will recieve a similar dollar amount to Buehrle and that is almost too much in my opinion. I can't imagine either pitcher recieving all that much more than Burnett, for the main reason that the Jays completely overpaid for his services. Hmm. Just something to ponder. -
QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 02:18 PM) Um...he caught the ball, that's what he's supposed to do. I'm eagerly awaiting to see Willie play though. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes, he did, and it was an excellent catch, but a risky one aswell.

QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 02:15 PM) Stern was giving the Red Sox some defense in center field that Harris and his groupies could only dream of providing. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> What taking a gamble with the bases loaded that had it gotten by him would have entered the triangle resulting in an inside the park grand slam? I like Stern, alot, but this will benefit him greatly and was the plan since day one.
-
Stern has finally fulfilled his rule-5 requirements and will be back leading off and playing centerfield for Pawtucket, with Harris his replacement. WHarris1. It's time.

Just got back from the game. It was an excellent time, had excellent seats, etc. What a heartbreaker though. There have been seasons where Boston College has been the best team in hockey, and this year was not one of them. BC was too young, and with Collins playing only sparingly, it's tough. Not to mention, being 1 of 600 Boston College fans, with 18k Wisconsin fans was also tough. Good season, tough loss, seems to be a repitive thing being a Boston College fan.

It is not fair to think that the White Sox offense was going to take them through this season. It is better than last years, but barely, and it was clear that the White Sox offense last year was one of the worst in the league. With that being said, this rotation is a great one, probably the best in baseball, and the bullpen is good enough to compliment it. 1-4 is a terrible start, no ifs ands or buts about it. However there is still 157 left.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 7, 2006 -> 06:08 AM) I have defended you before, but this time you deserve calling out R&W. When you post something that you know is going to piss off 99% of people and elicit deep reactions based on prior conversations, you pretty much deserve whatever you get here. To be honest your actions here are very much equivilent of the people who you complained about turning completely unrelated arguements into Red Sox arguements. By going back and finding something you knew was inflamatory to bring up out of no where, you are now employing the same techniques as the people who get under your skin, congratulations. I am sure it won't take long at all for this to deteriorate and turn into another pissing contest for one of us here to clean up or close. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> My intention all along was to show an article I thought was worth reading, regardless of your opinion on the topic. A bodybuilding friend of mine thought it was something worth reading and sent me it, and I forwarded it onto here. I think, whatever stance you have, it's a good article to read. Perhaps I'm wrong, and for that I apologize. It's hard to fathom why this article would piss of 99% of the people from prior conversations, but if thats whats its going to be, then by all means close it, delete it, or whatever you feel necessary.
-
Well my point is still apparent then, it's a fine article and an excellent read.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Apr 6, 2006 -> 10:44 PM) You mean Chuck Norris is a liar?!?!?!?! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You're mistaking the Bowflex for the Total Gym. The Total Gym, what Chuck Norris sponsors is legit, the Bowflex is not.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Apr 6, 2006 -> 10:45 PM) Not this one, and you knew that. So don't b**** when comments are made. It's worthless. The point of the article is that certain steroids do have a legitimate medical purpose. Anyone who doesn't know this probably isn't intelligent enough to use a mouse, anyway. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It doesn't matter if soxtalk isn't like that. The article is worth reading, period. The point of the article is that steroids offer no bad when taken properly, especially when under doctored supervision. The High Schoolers who take them are taking them at an age they shouldn't be. I have no sympathy for these clowns and to a lesser extent these parents who for the childs wrongdoing is trying to obliterate a good thing.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Apr 6, 2006 -> 10:20 PM) It would of been better article if It didnt mention Bonds... seemed like just a dumb cheap shot at him. Even though I do believe he did roids. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I thought the same thing, although it's entirely necessary in my opinion, because Bonds is the poster boy for this topic.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Apr 6, 2006 -> 10:15 PM) You've gotta have something to do between reading muscle mags and watching your balls shrink up to the size of an infants. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't take steroids, but if I ever want to compete and my knowledge on the topic is where it should be, it might be something i'd experiment with. I also don't read muscle magazines whatsoever. Selling magazines is a tough thing when the majority of this world is unmotivated and dumb. Almost all the things in the magazines are false, and just in there to sell things and convince the fat lards of the world that they can have a boflex body by working out for 15 minutes, three times per week.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Apr 6, 2006 -> 10:13 PM) You just posted it on a message board. Makes perfect sense. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> On many message boards, posts are made, and then the post is closed and stickied. Treat it like one of those, if thats what you want to do. I just thought it was worth the read.

Even if the majority were off base, I didn't ask for anyones opinion or thoughts here. It's an informative article, and one that should be read by the masses.
-
Compare apples to apples, not apples to oranges. As it's been stated and proven for that matter, if taken properly steroids are entirely healthful. If a few idiots take steroids improperly at a young age and suffer from it, steroids again are doing a good thing by weeding out the ignorant.

http://www.taylorhooton.org/guestbook_vie.asp?page=16 I am a steroid, and I am mad. Why have I become such a bad word in this country when I do so much good in this world? Why has my honorable name been soiled just because a few dishonorable athletes have abused me? Renowned doctors worldwide have called me a wonder drug, but I am being portrayed nationally as the dirty little secret of the hulked-up, bulked-up juicers in Major League Baseball. I am actually being painted by grandstanding politicians as a death sentence for the youth of America. Let me tell you something. My job is to rescue kids, not kill them. I have saved thousands upon thousands of premature babies who are injected with me to help their little lungs develop quickly so they can breath, so they can live. Without me, these babies, some of whom don't even weigh 1 pound, would be killed by something called "Respiratory Distress Syndrome" -- a sometimes fatal disorder where the air sacs collapse in their underdeveloped lungs. "There's no question that steroids have saved the lives of many babies," says Dr. David Auerbach, the director of the neonatal intensive care unit at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. "They've had an incredible impact. There are times when they are the difference between life and death." You see, it was always my intention to help the many sick people who need me, not the few sickos who exploit me. It was never my desire to help Barry Bonds grow muscles. It was always my mission to shrink tumors in cancer patients. That's right, I have become one of the major medical combatants in the fight against cancer. I help patients overcome the nauseous effects of chemotherapy. I simultaneously help build up their strength while tearing down the disease. And sometimes, when all is lost, I am prescribed in the advanced stages of terminal cancer to help victims cope -- to increase their appetite, to make them feel better. "There are some steroids that will literally destroy cancer," says Dr. Clarence Brown, the president of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center here in town. "There are many patients who are alive and well because of steroids. I don't think any doctor would argue that steroids have saved a lot of lives -- many more lives than they have cost." Actually, I'm not so sure that I've been directly responsible for taking a single life. Everybody always brings up the name Lyle Alzado -- the former Oakland Raider steroid abuser who died in 1992. Has anybody bothered to check out Alzado's cause of death? Everybody just assumes it was me. But doctors say he died of complications from brain cancer, and there is absolutely no medical evidence that I cause brain cancer. Much has been made by self-indulgent politicians about how I'm becoming an epidemic among America's teenagers. This was the contrived reason they gave for holding a congressional hearing last week on baseball players who use me. Really, it was just so these politicians could see themselves on SportsCenter. The fact is that less than 1 percent of college and high school students have ever taken me recreationally. Compare that with the nearly 25 percent who have smoked cigarettes, 30 percent who have used marijuana and 80 percent who have consumed alcohol. Considering the number of teenagers who die every year as the result of drunk driving, I suggest our federal government forget about me and hold a congressional hearing on the hard liquor ads NASCAR allows on the sides of its racecars. And considering the number of teenagers who pollute their lungs with nicotine, maybe we should hold a congressional hearing on why the PGA Tour still allows its "athletes" to smoke cigarettes during competition. Unlike these other drugs, I save people and benefit society. I help breathe life into new babies and comfort old people who are taking their last breaths. Everywhere you look, there is somebody I've cured or strengthened. In fact, the writer of this column has a daughter who, while still in the womb, was given steroids to help her survive. Jessica is now a healthy, beautiful and intelligent 5-year-old who some believe will become the first woman president of the United States. And the editor of this column was seriously ill five years ago and was given steroids to successfully reduce swelling in his liver due to a chronic condition. He continues to be a loud, obnoxious Bostonian who has lived long enough to finally see his Red Sox win a World Series. I am a steroid, and I am a good drug. So just leave me alone and let me do my job

Boston College advances. Always we're comfortarbly ahead, three times had a three goal lead, but North Dakota kept fighting back. 6-5 final, but it wasn't as close as the score would indicate. If you catch highlites tonight, you'll see one of the better goals that you'll see ever.
