  1. I haven't enjoyed ESPN as a whole for a couple of years now. MLBTV has pretty well eliminated ESPN from my TV watching.
  2. Yeah, that is a great read. Thanks.
  3. I never was much of a Steve Stone fan but I've been pretty impressed now that he has joined Hawk in the booth. He doesn't seem to have the "I'm Steve Stone and you're not" attitude that I saw, or imagined I saw, when he broadcast for the Cubs. He does have a great deal of baseball knowledge. I've only heard DJ & Farmer once or twice during spring training, but I thought they both sounded better as a team. I happy with both duos.
  4. QUOTE (chw42 @ Mar 31, 2009 -> 09:39 AM) I know things aren't looking too well. But hey, it's baseball season and we all should be excited. As bad as it looks, things might end up okay. Well, maybe they won't...but here's something that'll get your pumped for baseball season again, I know it did for me. Certainly brings back the good memories of last season. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcnxsqBiPDk I may not agree with all the moves so far, but I'm still excited about this team and the upcoming season. I think this team will be fun to watch and could be a real pleasant surprise. Let's play ball!
  5. QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 02:58 PM) per Rosenthal's new column. Link BA in center & Getz leading off. No sense giving up anything for these other two.
  6. I read Thome is due to play tomorrow. He might be in a B game today or just taking swings in the cages.
  7. QUOTE (knightni @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 02:11 PM) Guillen's will be up soon. If anyone wants to get in on the sponsoring, I can edit either ad and include your name. I'll kick in also.
  8. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 03:04 PM) "The Glory of Their Times" is considered by many to be the best. A sports writer in the late 50s early 60s saw that an old ballplayer had died and realized a whole generation was about to pass into obscurity, so he set out across the country with a recorder and interviewed some real characters, old farts who were playing when the leagues first got started at the turn of the century. The stories are absolutely incredible, like the HOF catcher who refused to wear pads or a face mask, eventually wound up coaching for the Pirates in the 1920s. It's all first-person narratives, each chapter a different player. You won't be sorry. link This is probably my favorite baseball book. Great stories from old timers. I highly recommend it also.
  9. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Oct 6, 2008 -> 08:29 PM) I'll throw this out there early. If the Sox can find speed from are 3B or 2B/SS(Depending on which area they are going to upgrade), I wouldn't mind Anderson in CF. At this point, with NTC in the equation, Dye looks like he could be the odd man out. Again, if the Sox add a 3B and 2B that are starting material, an outfield left to right of Swisher-Anderson-Quentin is doable. I like this idea too. I think that would be solid outfield. I don't think you can let Konerko go. He and Buehrle are the heart of the team. I would try to move Dye, Vazquez and MacDougal. Maybe Boone Logan. Sign or trade for a solid starter and give Richard a shot at the 5th spot. If the Sox pick up a second baseman or shortstop that can lead off, I'd be willing to let Fields and Uribe battle for the third base job. A Casey Blake or similar wouldn't be bad either, and maybe a better option.
  10. Don't know if this has been posted yet, but on the Comcast pre-game show, it was reported that Chris Getz also has a broken wrist.
  11. QUOTE (tommy @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 02:46 PM) Why is he always mentioned playing 2nd base, or 3rd but never SS, where he played in college? Congrats on the signing. I think most people figure Alexi will be the Sox shortstop after this season.
  12. http://www.rotoworld.com/content/Home_MLB.aspx Per Rotoworld Red Sox acquired RHP Paul Byrd from the Indians for a player to be named later or cash. With Tim Wakefield hurting and Clay Buchholz struggling, the Red Sox went out and got a veteran starter for the stretch run. Byrd is 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA and the 37-year-old will be a free agent after the season. With Charlie Zink scheduled to start in Wakefield's place Wednesday, the Red Sox could either bump him from the rotation after one outing or replace Buchholz, who's scheduled to pitch Friday. For the Indians, Aaron Laffey is the obvious choice to replace Byrd in the rotation and having some success earlier this season.
  13. QUOTE (Linnwood @ Apr 24, 2008 -> 07:59 AM) After the last two homers Crede has hit, the broadcasts have shown him drinking a Red Bull in the dugout. Hawk even commented on how his son goes through a case of Red Bull a week. Could it be Joe is a rule breaker!
  14. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 10:30 PM) I am having a real hard time with the s***ty facial hair on this team. Biggest disappointment yet. I don't see any problems with the facial hair. I think it adds personality to the team. To each his own. It has also crossed my mind that these long goatees in the bullpen may be a symbolic type thing. As in last year the bullpen were the "goats" of the team. Heh, it may be a far fetched theory, since sometimes I do think too much, but you never know. Could become a good legend.
  15. QUOTE(scenario @ Apr 4, 2008 -> 08:43 PM) Harry Caray and Jimmy Piersall working together... alot of personality to try and fit in one booth. Those were interesting broadcasts. Didn't Jimmy Piersall lose his job after some White Sox wives complained about their seats and he made an on air statement saying something like, "What are they complaining about, they're just a bunch of horny broads. That's why they married athletes in the first place."
  16. QUOTE(scenario @ Apr 4, 2008 -> 06:36 PM) In was born in '58, and I can remember very clearly watching the Sox on Channel 32... Anyone remember the guys dressed like Pirates singing the "WFLD" song? LOL. And since it was UHF, I had to adjust the 'other' antennae on the TV to watch the games. But I can't remember the beer. Maybe if I drink one right now, it will kick my 'beer memory' back in. Yeah, I think I'll try that. Born in '58 also. The Sox were on 32 and some years 44. Possibly both channels during the same year. Harry used to do Falstaff commercials from the booth with (cf?) camera on him. From what I remember, he took many swigs from those cold cans while on camera.
  17. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Mar 25, 2008 -> 07:56 PM) my ideal would be Owens in LF, Quentin in RF and BA in CF, Swisher at 1B. But I'm guessing I'll have to wait until August 1st. I'd like to see this too, just not quite as early as you as you state.
  18. I'd like to add my thanks also. I obviously don't post much, but I do check this site everyday.
  19. QUOTE(stretchstretch @ Dec 7, 2007 -> 05:33 PM) The Bears aren't going to the playoffs??????? Ummm, sure don't look like it.
  20. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 11:04 AM) I think this is a very good post iamshack but also feel most on this site don't want to hear about it. So I see both sides. First, I think KW's comments to the media were unnecessary. He knows how the media works by now, it's part of the territory, things will leak out. It's the nature of baseball. He needs to get over that stuff and work around it. Further I believe he is extremely frustrated on many levels. He's frustrated his core players had lousy years last year. He's frustrated it took him so long to get rid of Duane Shaffer. He's frustrated he has to manage to a certain budget number and he can't blow guys away with offers (Hunter, LAA). He's frustrated with other organizations doling out what he believes to be insane contracts. Well, it's ok to be frustrated but he will have to work around it, which is what he's said he plans to do. I am convinced he's working hard and trying to make stuff happen. But the reality is these winter meetings were a big disappointment to everyone. Getting Carlos Quentin was a decent move but they need much more. He likes to move quickly and get things done ... that didn't happen and it makes him even more frustrated. White Sox fans do not play well to their highly paid GM to be frustrated. They don't want to hear it. While some of the name calling and keyboard lynching of Williams on this site today is more than a bit much, it is what it is. We are the fans and he is the GM, he is held to a higher standard than fans are. The bottom line is he will have to get stuff done. So far he hasn't. I don't hold the brave front against him, he is simply not going to come out to the media and say "woe is us, we are bad, we will continue to be bad". For people expecting that, get a clue. It doesn't work that way. But Williams will have to get more done than he has thus far. Trying is great, but trying doesn't get the job done. If other GM's are jerking him around as he intimates, go elsewhere, there are 29 other teams and it's his job to seal the deal. Two very good posts. Kenny Williams may not be the best GM in baseball but I'll take his aggressiveness and go down swinging attitude over the let's just give up attitude most of this board seems to have. Quite frankly that is how losers think. I don't want the Sox organization or players talking or thinking like losers. So Detroit and Cleveland look better on paper. The games aren't played on paper. On paper the Chicago Bears should be in first place and preparing for the playoffs. There is absolutely no way anyone can predict how this season will play out. We haven't even started Spring Training and people have written this season off and are threating not to show up for games. That's just sad. Will it be tough to make the playoffs? Hell yes. But if a team has any kind of character or toughness at all, they won't care about what the odds are. They'll go out and bust their asses trying to win it all anyway. That's what should be expected and I sure hope that is what we get regardless of what kind of "talent" we have on paper.
  21. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 12, 2006 -> 03:26 PM) He has a year or two of arbitration left. Ah, thanks.
  22. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 12, 2006 -> 12:06 PM) Am I the only one who's been pondering what we might be able to get in exchange for Garcia and Podsednik this offseason? Isn't Posednik a free agent after this year? Or is there an option on his contract.
  23. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 1, 2006 -> 10:43 AM) http://www.suntimes.com/output/sox/cst-spt-sox19.html McCarthy doesn't actually own a teddy bear. It's more like rookie hazing. I didn't catch the rookie hazing part. But many thanks for the link.
  24. Does anyone have a link to the article where Bradon confesses to having a teddy bear? I have a friend who's become a huge McCarthy fan, to the point where she's ready to start becoming a White Sox fan. (Currently a Cubbie fan). I'm thinking that article could be a clincher. I searched through 20 some pages of Soxtalk and all the archives I can find on the MLB site with no luck at all. Any help would be appreciated.
  25. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 03:56 PM) Kind of like a Sean Lowe type? That's what I was thinking. Depending on the cost, why not try it?.
