QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 09:10 AM) That's because the only way he ever gets to the 3rd time through the order, he's pitching a good game. When he's getting lit up, or walking everyone in sight, by the time they come up for the 3rd time, Carrasco is facing them. I don't necessarily think how he does the first time through is an indication how he would be as a reliever. He obviously would have a different mindset, and he might face more LH hitters. As bad as everyone thinks Colon is, and as great as Richard supposedly now is, although a week or so ago Poreda was a prospect and Richard was garbage, Colon still has a lower ERA and WHIP than Richard this season. I could care less about a differential of 0.028 regarding their whips, and especially colon's deceiving era. When colon gets hit, he gets hit hard. Richard's runs/9 is 5.1. Richard has given up 4 unearned in 89 inning. Richard's k/9 is 6.7. His k/bb is 1.78. His xbh% stands at 7.2%. Richard's ops against is .770. Richard has forced 12 double plays while having 79 opportunities... for a double play percentage of 15%. Colon's runs/9 is 6.1. Colon has given up 13 unearned in 62.1. Colon's k/9 is 5.5. His k/bb is 1.81 His xbh % stands at 11.6%. Colon's ops against is .854. Colon has forced 3 double plays while having 43 opportunities... for a double play percentage of just 7%. I could pretty much go on all day...

QUOTE (BamaDoc @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 08:47 AM) Does anyone have stats on Clayton Richard the first time thru the lineup. That would give some idea of his relief ability. Our pen has been less than stellar of late. 192 plate appearances, 164 at-bats, 23 runs, 46 hits given up, 9 doubles, 1 triple, 4 home runs, 24 walks, 32 strikeouts, so/bb of 1.33, .280 average, .374 obp, .421 slugging, .794 ops against. Shockingly richard has been at his strongest the third time through the order, by a good deal too.

QUOTE (LZPride08 @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 01:08 AM) has there been a pitcher(s) that has a Perfect Game in his career but hasn't been inducted to the HOF?... i thought THAT itself was a shoe-in to the HOF The following have not been inducted into the hall of fame while throwing a perfect game. Charlie robertson, don larsen, len barker, mike witt, tom browning, dennis martinez, kenny rogers, david wells, david cone, randy johnson, and of course buehrle.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 10:56 PM) Actually, Smoltz "lost it" back in the late '90s when he had elbow surgery. Dude had a 97 mph heater prior to that. Like Pedro, he figured out a way to get guys out with lesser stuff. But I'm getting off topic... Smoltz's fastball velocity- 2002- 95.1 2003- 97.1 2004- 95.3 2005- 92.3 2006- 92.7 2007- 92.5 2008- 92.5 2009- 91.3

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 05:54 PM) Didn't he sign a two year deal? Hudson did not sign a two year deal, though his performance based bonuses are pretty ridiculous. Hudson has already made 2.3 million in incentives and is only 3 plate appearances away from an additional 0.25 million.

MARK BUEHRLE PITCHES THE 18TH PERFECT GAME IN HISTORY

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 24, 2009 -> 09:37 AM) About 4-5 years ago someone in San Diego (don't remember if it was a Padre or the opposition) took a no-no into the 8th or 9th and I think it might have even been Ben Davis (could even be 6 or 7 years ago) who bunted and messed up the no-hitter and there was a huge out-cry amongst baseball players regarding it. I'll try to dig up the details but all I know is if I'm on the opposition I do everything I can to prevent getting no-hit. I wouldn't want to get no-hit, no way. Plus that way, you fully earn that no-hitter when you throw it. It was 8 years ago already, that's insane. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SD...200105260.shtml -

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 24, 2009 -> 08:08 AM) I don't recall what he is talking about. But i'm guessing he means someone hit a HR so no one was ever on the bases, not that no one ever reached a base. Technically a home run is getting on base... as it raises your obp, though i do understand what he was getting at. This is the game he is referring to... http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/TO...200705310.shtml Buehrhle gave up two runs two the blue jays, both of which were solo shots. It has been done before in a rain shortened game. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BA...197107300.shtml -

QUOTE (daa84 @ Jul 24, 2009 -> 07:52 AM) The fact that Mark Buehrle is the only pitcher in mlb history to face the minimum in 3 separate games is ridiculously awesome The guy has racked some pretty impressive career achievements. World Series Ring A start, and a SAVE in the world series An ALDS win, an ALCS win and complete game. 9 consecutive seasons with 10+ wins, including 15+ in 5 of them (probably 6 after this year, with an outside shot at 20 this year) 133 Career wins. 200 is easily within reach and 250 is within the realm of possibility (if he has a kenny rogers-esque career 300 isn't impossible) 4 All star games, including starting and getting the W in one 2 No hitters 1 Perfect game 3 Times facing the minimum Only pitcher ever to lose a game while never having a guy on base HR in interleague play How is that feasible? Someone has to reach at some point so that they can be brought around to score at least one run for the win. There have been no-hitters in which a pitcher loses, but no one on base? Please explain, i must be going nuts. -

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 24, 2009 -> 06:58 AM) Yes, on the radio they said its the third time because of what you said: a 2 hitter vs the tribe in which both runners were taken care of via double play. It really does not get better than what he did yesterday Hey Kalapse/Qwerty, has an AL pitcher ever hit a homerun and thrown a no-hitter(much less a perfect game) in the same year? Cy young hit one in 1904. Frank smith hit one in 1905. Joe wood hit two in 1991. In 1917 babe ruth pitched 0 innings of a complete game in which ernie shore no-hit washington. Ruth hit two home runs that season while shore hit none. Walter johnson hit one in 1920. Wes ferrell hit nine in 1931. Bob feller hit two in 1940. Bob lemon hit five in 1948. Virgil trucks hit one in 1952. Don larson hit two in 1956 which was the year he threw his perfect game. Earl wilson hit three in 1962. Jack kralick hit two in 1962. Tom phoebus hit two in 1968. Catfish hunter hit one in 1968 which was the year he threw his perfect game. Clyde wright hit two in 1970. Vida blue hit one in 1970. Buehrle is the first to hit a home run and throw a no hitter/perfect game since the dh was introduced in 1973. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 10:37 PM) So I can name many, many times where teams have had 5+ run rallies in the 9th inning without bunting to start it off, but you can't name any that started with a bunt, yet I am supposed to believe there is a significant enough chance of it happening to go against 110 years of baseball tradition. I'd really prefer you get out of the hypothetical, and give me some real evidence before I go discarding baseball's great history. If i had a search function powerful enough that i could find out how many rallies of five runs or more started have started in the ninth inning via a bunt, i would be more than happy to do so. Baseball reference's player index is not even that powerful to my knowledge, nor is sabr. If it has happened even once, which i'm pretty certain it has, then right there is reason enough. -
Dewayne Wise to be interviewed on Sportscenter

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 10:25 PM) Frankly I dont understand why these boards always have hate for like the last guy on the roster. Timo Perez, Dewayne Wise. I mean, doesnt every team have a guy who's purely a backup for speed or for glove? Why hate this guy? All too recently some poster said something to the effect of "i now want Wise to fail" These boards, and fans of other teams in general have ''hate'' for the last man because frankly they rarely any good at all. The 25th man is the 25th man for a reason, he brings the least to the table. Who was the poster that said they want wise to fail? Whoever it was is an imbecile, at best. -

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 10:11 PM) Cabrera is insanely fast, Speed is his best asset. It made sense for him to try to bunt for a hit, in fact, he seems to try it at least once per game. He has attempted seven bunts while reaching one time in 36 games. -

QUOTE (Stocking @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 09:58 PM) its not laying down when you can swing the bat. Exactly, but that is more or less what people are asking for, to not try their damndest at any cost. A bunt is a way of reaching base. Swinging is a way of reaching base. What makes one cheaper than the other? Someone has the ability to field the ball in both cases. I could understand if when a ball was bunted no one could attempt to field it for 1.8 seconds (you should get what i'm saying) before moving, now that would be cheap, but that is not the scenario on hand. I would love for someone explain the difference of swinging for a base hit and laying down a bunt. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 09:52 PM) Frankly, I think that the situation dictates it. If it's a 1 run game, your team still has a shot if they can get one baserunner. If it's a 5 run game, you need a legit meltdown by the pitcher. Do you bunt for hits very often in a 5 run game? Not really, not even Juan Pierre did that very often I'd guess. I have seen way too many bunt attempts while a team is down by a grand slam or more to ever write it off. I would wager it happens several times a week, at the very least. Bunting, no matter how much i am against it, tend to be a a strength of a select group of players. I was just reading about a game recently (within the past two weeks) in which a team was being no hit, down by six, two outs in the seventh. That team went on to bunt, got the hit, and went on to score nine runs that inning, winning that game twelve to six. If it is a one run game at what point is it wrong to lay down a bunt? Fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth? If it is a five run game at what point is it wrong to lay down a bunt? Fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth? -

So at what point is it too late to bunt in a game to break up a no-hitter or a perfect game? How many runs behind would be classified as too many? Everth cabrera very recently bunted while down 8 runs with 2 outs in the 9th inning when sanchez threw hit no-hitter. This sort of this happens way more than people think. A simple fact is players pride is on the line. First off, no one wants to lose. Secondly, no one wants to get no-hit or have a perfect game thrown against them while doing so. Practically i'm hearing the opposing team of whoever is throwing the no-hitter/perfect game should just lay down, for the sake of history possibly being made. If any player goes up to the plate, under practically any circumstance (rain is approaching, team has the lead, they want to make the game official, hack away) without the intention of getting on base anyway within that given players abilities, i have lost all respect. You never lay down for anyone. -
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 06:21 PM) So should this homer be a walkoff, or a grand slam to give the Sox the lead? Might as well be the ultimate grand slam to win the game. If he were to hit a grand slam when down 3 runs, with 2 outs, on a 3-2 pitch, while being the the home team, he could pretty much say he has done it all. The ultimate grand slam has never been accomplished in major league baseball history thus far.

Let the b****ing begin.

Jpn, this is why he has never been and never will be considered for a major league roster. Never is too harsh actually, several people on the depth chart could theoretically get injured all at once. Cook is 28 years old and seemingly overmatched in triple a, the dream is over.

QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 04:01 PM) Cooper was the home plate umpire for Buehrle's no hitter, and the home plate umpire for his perfect game. Creepy. I figured it has never happened before, so i got curious and checked it out. Buehrle is indeed the first pitcher in baseball history to have thrown a no-hitter and a perfect game with the same umpire behind the plate. -
