QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 26, 2009 -> 03:32 PM) For some reason, I thought he was like Bret Saberhagen and always did well every other year...at any rate, Konerko is definitely due for one last solid .280-30-100 season in his career with a .375 OBP and .525 SLG at least. Saberhagen never had a bad year in his career... Farnsworth would best fit your description of bad to good from 2000 until 2006... even though his 2006 he was slightly above average. Actually farnsworth had a couple atrocious years in that span. -
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 26, 2009 -> 12:42 PM) Quite right. Joe Besser was quite an established and respected solo comic act before his short Stooge stint, but his wimpy persona ("Not so haaard!") and refusal to take the brunt of most physical slapstick kept him from ever meshing well at all with Moe and Larry. Besser also was known by kids of my generation addicted to Saturday morning Hanna-Barbara cartoon fare as the voice of Babu the Genie in the cartoon adaptation of I dream of Genie. More of the useless trivia clogging my brain. It's hard to say anything nice about Curly Joe. Trivia Time: There was actually a 7th official Stooge in the Three Stooges roster. Name him. (Mega cool points if anybody can do it without using teh Google). I wish i was on here the second you posted that question. My father has 8 brothers and sisters, he was the oldest boy and third oldest overall, he is turning 64 in august. My uncle jimmy (59, second oldest of the boys) had whooping cough at the age of 2 and the doctors botched his treatment which resulted in a form of retardation. The saddest part about it is my grandmother claimed he was the easiest and quickest to speak, potty train, walk, etc. To this day he holds a job because he refuses to be considered handicapped in anyway. His escape has always been music and most importantly the three stooges. I cannot recall a time in my life going over to see him and he not having a three stooge short on. He had the entire collection before the 190 short collections were even a possibility due to some of the stooge shorts being banned. First they were all recorded, then for presents he recieved several full collections on vhs, and now of course several full dvd collections, along with ultra rare home videos of the stooges. His stooge collection is absolutely massive, i would easily say it is one of the top ten biggest collections in the world, like i said they are his escape. I have seen pretty much every stooge collections on the internet and they are a spit in the ocean in comparison. I have borrowed his collections many times while growing up, usually watching them front to back, for days straight, and they just never get old. They were just so damn consistent it was uncanny. What i mean by this is people who have seen these shorts even more than myself can still spot something they had never seen 75 years later. ''Hold hands, you lovebirds''. ( Emil Sitka) That is a quote that will stand the test of time for me for, because in a weird way, it's like larry and moe were love birds, one died, and the other (moe) shortly followed. There was no purpose anymore. Shemp, while he had a very successful solo career was in no way, shape, or form on the level of curly. I do like shemp also, i mean who can disagree with alex trebek (his favorite stooge). Everything came easy to him, he truly had fun, while it looked like he wasn't even trying. I cannot that say that just about anyway, up until this modern era. Since you brought up shemp and besser, i figured i should mention i just watched ''hold that ghost'' and ''africa screams'' both starring bud abbott and lou costello. In ''hold that ghost'' shemp plays the ''soda jerk'', he only has one scene, though it is pretty memorable. In ''africa screams'' both besser and have shemp decent size roles (besser's was larger) not too mention the baer brothers. Curly howard did two cameos, one was in ''hold that lion''... what was the other? He is not credited anywhere for this role. Malice in the palace would not be the answer, in case you thought it might be due to him being on the lobby card (which i own a copy of).

Rosenthal: Melky Cabrera is on the block; Sox would be good fit

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Mar 26, 2009 -> 12:41 AM) I'll throw something out there, just seeing if it sticks. A ton has changed since the Swisher deal was completed. CF for the Sox somehow looks even worse than it did before, and the Yanks suddenly need a 3rd basemen to fill in for a month. I don't know if Betemit fell out of favor in NY, or there just wasn't a spot for him, would a Betemit for Melky swap be totally out of the question? (I'm not saying I would like it, just trying to play match maker.) First off the yankees are not willing to give up much, money wise, or talent wise, for just a little over a month (if it's even that long). There line-up is potent enough without rodriquez. As long as they have someone that can catch the ball over at third, while rodriguez is recovering, that will be all they are looking for, anything else is a bonus. Betemit far from fits the bill. There is just no room for betemit over there. There barely was last year and this year even less. The addition of both swisher and teixeira would put him third on the depth chart defensively, which just so happens to be where the vast majority of his playing time came from. Yankees fans best described betemit as standing still while he was moving (defensively) which practically all of his defensive metrics would agree with. The yankees also put betemit on the dl only 11 days into last season with conjunctivitis AKA pink eye, something fishy there. Pink eye clears up in the matter of days (usually as little as 24 hours after medicated drops are taken kids are allowed back to school with a doctors note). Yankees fans have soured on melky for quite a while now. As previously stated by someone else, the yankees orginization has been high on cabrera due to them wanting to get more in return than he is actually worth, which is typical yankees fashion. Btw, melky is out of options. -
QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 02:21 PM) I think that's actually the best ever, not just this ear. That's just a ridiculous ratio, even a 3:1 ratio means you're probably one of the top pitchers in the league. No it's not. http://www.baseball-reference.com/b/bondto01.shtml http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/SOpBB_career.shtml

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 10:20 AM) You would put Johan Santana in front of Curt Schilling? Nothing against Santana, because he's been a dynamite pitcher, but he's been a front of the rotation starter for 6 years and only a full-time starting pitcher for 5 years. How does that even get close to comparing to 15 years of excellent starting pitching? Beyond that, even if there are 5 pitchers better (I'd question if Mussina was better...they appear quite similar to me at the very least, and Schilling was absolutely dominant in the postseason), why should that stop Schilling from getting in? Being one of the 10 best pitchers of his generation still puts him in probably the top 3% of the pitchers of this generation, and you would have to be in the top 2% to get in? I don't think so. Jack Morris was a rubber-armed horse who was just slightly above average in his career and is an overrated, but good, postseason pitcher. In 1984 with the Tigers, he was lights out. In 1987 with the Tigers, he got one start against the Twins and got lit the f*** up. In 1991, he was decent in the ALCS against Toronto, he was decent, but he had one of the most memorable World Series performances of any pitcher in history; and he got absolutely torn apart in 1992 as part of Toronto's rotation. In all, he had 2 good postseasons and 2 terrible postseasons. Curt Schilling was a far more dominant postseason pitcher than Jack Morris, compiling a 2.23 ERA in 19 career postseason starts (he went 11-2). Curt Schilling was a far superior pitcher to Jack Morris. I cannot believe you of all people forgot his 4.380 strike out to walk ratio... good for #1 in the modern era.

QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 02:56 PM) Quick question: Why does it always seem like the Catcher position is the most offensive-challenged position in the majors? It seems like such a barren wasteland, and I think we're lucky we even have AJ. Catching is by far the most physically demanding position on the field.

So in other words on april 6th buehrle will have the ball in his hands.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 21, 2009 -> 05:51 PM) Accuracy, maybe. Arm strength, no. Maybe compared to the average minor leaguer he is above average, for a major league player that would not be the case (arm strength). I cannot recall many touting quentin's arm strength to be anything above average. In college ball he was supposedly a very strong defender (compared to what else was around him), the times change though, as the competition gets stronger. Dye's arm strength easily blows quentin's out of the water and he no longer has the accuracy he once possessed, we all know dye is has become a very bad outfielder, he is does nothing but hurt the sox while in the field. Dye is realistically nothing more than a dh at this point.. If anderson is not in center the sox will be be fielding one of the worst, if not the worst defensive outfields in the majors once more.
-
QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 21, 2009 -> 05:28 PM) Um. what? His arm strength has been questioned for a while now, along with his accuracy. At the very best he has an average arm all around at this point in time.

QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 21, 2009 -> 04:07 PM) Not a good start for Buehrle.

If he was around this past season while the sox had cabrera it would have been unbearable. This being a message board he would have been alright as he only would have to type and not literally talk. In the real world though he would have been fµ(k3Ð, with cabrera's nuts in his mouth and all... Idiocy is always good for a laugh or two, so he had that going for him.

We really need a trivia thread... I was on base every game of my career, my career consisted of more than 100 games, but no more than 110 games... who am i? This player played in the 1970's.

RotoWorld Suggests White Sox should sign Jim Edmonds

QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 12:52 AM) Well I've seen enough of Brian Anderson to be able to say with conviction that I believe, with a full season of at-bats, that Anderson cannot do any better than 15 home runs, 60 rbi's, and a .235 average. At best. There's better centerfielders out there, and it's time to forget about Anderson. Anderson's nothing more than an outfield version of Cesar Izturis. I don't care what position izturis plays or where he bats in the line-up, comparing anderson to izturis is an insult. If you think anderson ''cannot'' do any better than 15 home runs, etc, etc... you have already admitted you believe he could hit 15 in a given season. Izturis hits roughly 2 home runs a year (actual games played aka service time) which comes out to 12 in his entire career. It took izturis 728 plate appearances in 2004 to knock is 62 runs. His previous career high was 40 rbi's in 2003, which also just so happened to be to be his career high for plate appearances at the time, 593. He averages 41 rbi's per season. If anderson tried to be as bad as izturis offensively he couldn't even do it. -

I should have been more clear, i meant he is tied for second in all of baseball.

Macdougal is tied for the second in a certain category this spring... what is it?

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Mar 16, 2009 -> 08:44 PM) I figured iut would take Joe a few games of ST to satrt to get his swing and rythm back You told me in that pm when he was signed he was gonna bat .1000 in spring with a home run for every at-bat. Figures you would pretend like you never said that now...

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 16, 2009 -> 07:12 PM) Betemit can get a ton of AB's against righties since he crushes them. There is no way a .799 ops against righties constitutes as crushing the ball. Compared to how how poorly he hits left handers... you may have something. There is no arguing he will be a valuable assest for us as long as he sees the least amount of lefties as possible. We have not had this type of offensive weapon in quite a long time. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 16, 2009 -> 07:32 PM) I did find this on page 5 of the recent "Ozzie doesnt think Owens is playing too well" thread dated March 12th from Balta : "With the way he's hitting right now and the fact that he seemingly can't run, I have difficulty thinking anyone else would grab him on waivers to put him on their big league roster." Not only does he think he can't hit or run but doesn't even see a place for him in the majors. Surely not an Owens fanboy. I know I vowed not to speak for him but this speaks for itself and took minimum research. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 16, 2009 -> 07:35 PM) If Owens could hit .290 and steal at a 75% clip, I think the numbers said he could have been as effective for us as Podsednik was in early 2005, because that's exactly what Pods was doing. He's patient enough, takes walks, and would be all over the basepaths. His numbers in 2007 suggested he might be able to do that in the big leagues. Now, he's 0/the spring in SB's still right? And he's hitting around .220. I can take no slugging from him if he's giving me OBP and moving himself in to scoring position. He's doing neither of the things I said he needed to do. He's getting a totally fair chance right now. He can have another chance at AAA this season if he keeps struggling. All I want with these guys is for them to get a fair chance. That's all I asked for Anderson...a fair chance at the position. That's all I wanted to see for Owens. He's gotten it, he's crapping his pants, that's all I needed to see. As long as we make decisions based on baseball, and not other things...I'm content. This is what i have been referring to. How much more fair could the sox have been with owens? Being patient can only go so far, there has to come a point when realization sets in that a player is not cut out for the job. Owens being 25 years old and getting his first crack at the majors was a great indicator in the first place. This guy has had everything served up on a silver platter and done nothing but fail. Sure there are a good amount of players that finally reach the majors at that age, but none of them are slap hitters and try to reach base via the bunt. None... and there is a reason for it. The average orginzation realizes it is not worth their time, money, and effort on something that can be found anywhere else a dime a dozen. Most times when that sort of situation arises they are the big time hitters who needs to cut down on the holes in their swing, plate patience, take the ball the other way, etc. Owens has spent three, count them three consecutive parts of a season in triple a. Now that would might not have even be too bad if he was 23, 24, and 25 and repeating triple a. Actually, it probally still would have, would have meant he hit a wall, which he clearly has. I don't know many if any mlb players who had to repeat any given minor league level three times to make it and stick in the majors. Owens is a 28 year old who is only getting slower, which has been literally his only asset his entire professional baseball career. Jerry owens ceiling and floor is very similar to that of joey gathright. That is far from a compliment. Even owens topping out to be the player gathright is unlikely, gathright is a better defender and the ''faster'' of the two. Both hurt their teams so much it is actually kinda sickening. Neither are major league caliber players. You also mention how you could deal without his slugging. The ultimate job of a leadoff hitter is to score runs. Yes, they are only guaranteed to leadoff an inning once a game, i realize that. The problem with being content with absolutely no slugging is that there is a very direct translation when it comes to ops and runs scored. That concept seems too far-fetched actually, as a player diving into second base (while putting the team in jeopardy of an out) is apparently that much sexier. Yay for dirt on pants! -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 16, 2009 -> 11:10 AM) Because usually guys don't fall off this quickly before they hit 30, especially with very few miles on the tires. Players actually ''fall off'' much quicker than the age of 30. Major leaguers? No. Life time minor leaguers? Hell yes. This sort of thing happens all the time, especially to players that were never very good in the first place, owens just so happens to fall into that category. Why do all the studs hit or pitch so well in high school, college, or any portion of the minors, and then go on to hit a wall? Generally when this wall is hit it is before the age of 25, thus us knowing they will likely never help out a major league team. Their best days are behind them, they are over matched, really that simple. Aberrations happen all the time in sports, the 2005 season for owens was just that. This is simply beating a dead horse as you are still a backer of his, though nothing will change your mind until he hurts the sox once more with his production, or should i say his lack of production. Btw, owens is really is not all that fast, so there goes his only ''asset''. -
Game thread date needs to be changed.
