  2. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 01:17 PM) I already pinned it. It's being reported by the Score and just so everyone knows: MLBTR is not a f***ing source. I love you.
  3. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 12:26 AM) I don't think he was trying to imply that slugging is bad, just that you can't focus on slugging to the exclusion of all else, especially since we've got so much of it when averaged over the whole team. It's silly to expect your entire lineup to crush the ball consistently. If we had 9 Jim Thomes on our ball club, I don't know that we would be that good. I understood that. Princess likely believes that as long as he is competent enough offensively he will do, due to his defense. This may very well end up being the case. I can also see this quote meaning you would rather have hit after hit strung (rally) together while scoring three runs compared to a walk, a hit or any sort, and a home run to top it off. There is very little difference in the outcome other than one may be more fun to watch and even that is debatable (rally the runs in, or a home run with men on). There is a ongoing belief here that extra base hits and home runs are equivalent to a piece of s***. Speedy slap hitters may sound really cool and exciting until your team is full them. Also, if a team had nine clones of thome (or any ''slugger'' for that matter) in the line up it would be down right scary, devestating.
  4. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 12:07 AM) I'm as harsh a critic of Brian as can be, and yet if he wants to keep taking walks and slapping singles... while bringing that CF defense, great. I dont need more extra base power on the team. What I do fear though is that he's getting an abnormal amount of first pitch balls for some reason, and when the league adjusts his OBP will revert. Very much hope that fear does not come to be. Ya, that always hurts. I can't stand when a player is even closer to home than the average hit (single).
  5. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 20, 2009 -> 06:40 PM) You don't read nearly enough of my posts, you need to brush up damn it. Hell I posted those same Runs/200 numbers a few months back and probably more than a few times since '06. I've always found it annoying that Jermaine has a reputation for being a good defender with very strong arm when neither is even remotely true. He has some of the worst mechanics of any outfielder in the game and it leads to one of the least effective arms in Major League Baseball yet Hawks and blind Sox fans will continue to sing his praises. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?s=...t&p=1820977 Been way too occupied with other thing this past year- year and a half to memorize everything that is said. I thought it was odd since i recalled you noting that dye is brutal defensively, i will admit i figured you could have possibly flipped. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 20, 2009 -> 06:42 PM) I read that as sarcasm, Kalapse regularly rips Dye's perceived arm strength. I am so used to people just using that obnoxious green and living by it to distinguish a joke that i almost forgot people still knew how to say something sarcastically without it. Down with the green.
  6. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 20, 2009 -> 05:35 PM) Um, no. Runs/200 is OBVIOUSLY flawed, how could they have the canon that is Jermaine Dye's right arm rated as below average over the past 3 years? Blasphemy. I don't think it is obviously flawed because you do not agree with it. Fangraphs ''arm'' would be in agreement that his arm has never been particullary good. http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/...n_2003-03-21_0/
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 20, 2009 -> 05:17 PM) I'll wait for the sacrifices and great throws, although I might be waiting a while on Anderson to produce those. Some people thought Rowand was a good thrower, when he was a really average arm. Anderson is above average, but he's far from Larry Walker or Roberto Clemente. I Doubt It

    Films Thread

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Apr 20, 2009 -> 02:28 PM) My wife was away at job training for most of the week so I used the opportunity to watch the entire LOTR extended trilogy over six consecutive nights. I still think those are outstanding films all in all. First time i watched the lord of the rings (theatrical versions) i turned on the fellowship of the ring at 1 a.m. and i eventually got done with the return of the king a little past 10. It was definitely worth it... as you mentioned they are rather outstanding.
  9. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Apr 19, 2009 -> 02:40 PM) Sox starting to hit the ball hard and not trying to hit homers and look at the results. Nah, if they win today it will be because of the home runs.
  10. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 14, 2009 -> 05:40 PM) It just reminds me of how much I hate watching him hit. He works counts well because he just doesn't swing the bat. For his career he's only swung at 36.7% of his total pitches seen. Last year that would have been the 4th lowest swing% of the 343 players who had at least 200 PA. He makes contact at a very high rate; his 88.1% number would put him in the upper 14 percentile of qualified hitters last year but he chooses to just watch pitches. For his career only 7% of his total strikes are from him swinging and missing while 38% are looking. That's why back in '05 and '06 50% of his strikeouts (total: 171 K) were looking. He's incredibly disciplined, anyone who watches 63%+ of pitches into the glove has to be but his strikezone vision isn't great. Good discipline + poor zone vision = bat on shoulder approach. He doesn't really draw walks but 8 to 9 percent of his plate appearances will likely end in him jogging to 1st. He would have been fifth actually...
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 02:47 PM) MacDougal going for the league lead in wild pitches apparently. Macdougal is going for the league lead in overall sucktitude to be more precise.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 01:06 PM) DJ DJ is smarter than he looks...
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 12:51 PM) If baseball favors lefthanders or not... Which said it does favor lefties? I am very curious.
  14. QUOTE (earthshiner @ Apr 14, 2009 -> 11:44 PM) 4 extra inning games today and boston vs oakland is tied in the 8th Ended up being the longest of the day (12 innings) and was ended on a travis buck single with the bases load off lopez.
  15. This thread officially made me dumber. Thanks for nothing.
  16. QUOTE (BearSox @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 01:12 AM) What if Pods comes back, plays, hits .290 with a .350 OBP, steals 50+ bases and gets voted into the all-star game? I take it what you mean by this is... would people retract their statements being made here since the news broke and make williams out to be a genius? Yes, the majority. Would they be in the right? No.
  17. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 08:00 PM) Or when he starts b****ing about the umps. I see no difference in him voicing his opinion about the umpiring... than say us here at soxtalk. There truly is none, at least how i see it. I will admit he goes overboard for the sake of it at times because of aggravation, but then again the same is done here on a daily basis. Umps get calls wrong every game, whether it is a pitch, or a play at a bag, etc. This is a fact of life and it is not changing any time soon. Throughout pretty much every broadcast in the majors throughout the game you will hear ''where was that pitch?'' plus much more. What i am getting at is hawk is definitely not alone in this aspect. Everyone could either a. come to terms with that fact that umps blow call and not bring it up... or, b. speak of it when a call is blown. People choose the latter because the former is not realistic.
  18. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 03:48 PM) Why exactly are we lucky. A crappy fast player with no power what so ever. Other teams don't claim that, they hope we start that and lead him off. Then they can pound him inside with fastball as he can't handle them. They will move the 3rd baseman up to the lip of the grass and warn the 2nd baseman that lots of dribblers are coming his way. Owens is your starter until Wise comes back. He suggested michael bourn also, what else do you really expect? Seems to be a trend of him liking players that make a team worse and not better.
  19. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 02:51 PM) They had a 4 run lead, I'm sure if a guy or 2 got on, they would have removed him. You cannot blow out your bullpen by the end of April. This is very true, though i am not concerned. The sox bullpen is generally in the bottom of the league when it comes to the amount of innings pitched, which as you know is a positive.
  20. Like dick allen i am fine with carrasco... but no one should expect much better than a 5 era, 1.5 k/bb walk rate, and a whip of 1.500. Nothing indicates anything other than numbers in that range.
  21. QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 10, 2009 -> 11:25 PM) How come our big leaguers never have a line like Beckham's in the box score? We could use a 4-for-5 from somebody once in a while. I hope quentin's and konerko's lines thus far meet your standards.
  22. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 02:05 PM) Its going to take Quentin another 6 months to get some bat speed. I thought he was very close, though i truthfully didn't think he was 100%. I would welcome being wrong in this instance every single time around.
