QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Nov 30, 2011 -> 04:31 PM) Cost-effective and good instead of overpaid and bad? If you think Papelbon is bad, how can you think Santos is good?
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 10:31 PM) Remember though, even a top prospect probably has close to a 50% bust rate, or even higher if it's only a moderate level prospect, so a 50% rate of not even getting to where Sergio currently is. That's why the price has to be higher than just 1 position player/pitcher top prospect. Santos is closer to being Jesse Crain than he is to being Jonathon Papelbon.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 05:06 PM) Alexei Ramirez would require the kind of package that the Rockies got for Jiminez. Maybe better. That would make Ramirez one of the most valuable trade commodities in MLB.

QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 05:01 PM) His pitching arm is only like, three years old though. He should be injury-free with his slider for a least a few years longer than the average slider-throwing RP. Point about his arm not having mileage on it. I just think that as empty as the Sox farm system is, it'd be best to cash in the Santos chips now rather than later.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 01:15 PM) Those two things aren't close really. You are talking about a guy who just gave you a cheap six year extension, versus a minor leaguer. Those things are going to be viewed very differently by people outside of the organization who might want to come here. Deal him while his value is THIS high. 29 year-old closers who have devasting sliders don't normally have long shelf lives.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 10:29 AM) Meh. Same thing to me. But I will concede that there is a distinct difference between "getting" calls and "taking" calls. For some reason, when I initially read the thread title, I saw it as the latter. So sorry, Marty, gotta take back my "vindication" prop. I know that means so much to you. I am all about vindication. Don't back down J4L, you're right of course this vindicates me.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 11:32 AM) They could obviously move him if it was just an issue of trading him and getting him off the books. The question is what do they want for him? At the very least this tells me his value isn't as much as the Sox think it is.
-
QUOTE (DirtySox @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 11:29 AM) Agreed. This team isn't magically getting better by dumping their tradeable assets merely to resign MB. I see it as a lateral move at best. I fear this is indeed the goal though, and I also fear it will continue to leave the organization in between. Not bad, but not good either. I'm not sure why Mark would want to return if this is the case either. Buehrle fills a need in rebuilding though. He'd suck up innings.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 08:17 AM) Buster_ESPN Buster Olney White Sox have been trying to move reliever Matt Thornton (owed two years,$12 m.) since July, sources say, and are still trying to move him. I was told by many here that there would be a line of suitors for Thornton. What gives?

Pick 14 plan (get it?) replaces the Ozzie Plan. So much for Konerko going anywhere.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 06:12 PM) Santos, Viciedo, and Ramirez. I think he is anti-latino. I love the latino. If anything I am pro-latino.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 06:04 PM) LF De Aza, CF Rios, RF Viciedo, 1b Alonso, $13 million immediately available for various purposes. What do you do about the pitching?
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 05:42 PM) But that still means we need a RF and a 1b 2 years down the line (and a closer since that's where we're starting all this). Really makes a mess. LF Alonzo, CF De Aza, RF Rios. Closer Reed. Two years Alonzo moves to 1B. Easier to fill a LF hole than a SP hole.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 05:25 PM) Konerko is the 1 big salary guy on this club who ought to be moveable with a decent return. Not better than Viciedo.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 05:16 PM) Personally, I think that trading Konerko plus freeing up $12 million would be a much more solid pitching haul than trading Viciedo. If they can do that then by all means they should. I don't think that's the case though.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 04:51 PM) Why on Earth would you deal Viciedo for young pitching and keep Konerko on the roster? If you're dealing away Santos to get Alonso, you're getting Alonso with 2013 and beyond in mind. However, Konerko will be 37 that year and will be in the final year of his contract. Thus, this pitching you've obtained and this LF you've obtained will suddenly have a manufactured 1b hole starting that season. If you're trading away your current closer to get a young 1b, and your 1b position is blocked by a 35 year old under contract for 2 years for $25 million, "trading away your young RF and moving the 1b to the OF" shouldn't even enter your mind. You trade Viciedo because he is most likely to bring back the best possible pitching haul of any Sox and Alonzo gives you a young middle of the order hitter to replace Viciedo. Alonzo plays LF until he replaces Konerko at 1B.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 04:20 PM) I don't know Alonso that well, but he's a 1b right? I would really hate to deal for a guy that we have to move to RF because he's blocked by Konerko, only to find out that Alonso is blocked in RF by Viciedo. In other words, he better be able to give me numbers that make it reasonable for me to send the Captain packing. Put Alonzo in LF and deal Viciedo for pitching.
-
Reds are looking at Baily as closer and Alonso is being mentioned. Would you trade Santos for Alonso? I would.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 20, 2011 -> 08:36 AM) They put the stats up for you to see. Looks like Money to me Conveniently when they were out of it. Thornton's a valuable set up man, but everyone thinks he's better than his results show him to be because of his 95-97 mph fastball.

I have a weekend package, second row upper deck reserve and the price drop is roughly 25% from last year.
-
I don't want to see them half-ass a rebuilding plan. I'll be pretty excited if they don't.
-
Danks and Santos to the Rangers could bring back quite a bit. A ton of possibilities if they are truly rebuilding.
-
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Nov 16, 2011 -> 09:10 AM) Well yeah, if the Yankees will not give up Betances or Banuelos than there is not fit probably. I would take Nova + others for Danks but they probably would not give up Nova either. What are the board's thoughts on potential Yankee hauls for Danks? It's really tough to guage Danks value coming off a subpar year with only 1 year before free agency. One of the Yankees pitchers I liked was Hector Noesi. Right-hander, low 90's, has the look of a middle of the rotation starter. Get the Red Sox involved and Danks value goes up to the Yankees.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 07:45 PM) Santos is a player who should still be around if the team were to do a quick style rebuild. No need to trade him. The way you do a quick rebuild is by dealing a player with value. Santos has value.
