  1. The Sox would have to be up on the Twins by 5 games at this point for this board to be content. In other words, the expectations many have here are extremely unrealistic.
  2. Rogers on MLB network said Sox are also looking at relievers, mentioned Dotel. Also said Chairman Reinsdorf is in the mix with Williams and Hahn. I'm guessing the Chairman is involved purely to make a decision on Ramirz's money if one has to be made.
  3. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 01:06 PM) The Sox should have never been in the position they're in today. When they went with the DH by committee, they said that if it didn't work, they could then acquire someone at the deadline. The thing is, hearing everything about KW makes it seem like he knows more than anyone that he needs to find another bat. The options avaiable at the trade deadline were better than the one's available during the offseason.
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 12:59 PM) Agreed, at the end of the day, being close to deals doesn't mean anything. He needs to get something done, or him and Ozzie deserve even more heat for their decisions during this last offseason. They are 58-44. They deserve no heat. None.
  5. Disagree on the Cowley bashing. He does a damn good job covering the team.
  6. How motivated is Manny going to be if he has to go back to the Dodgers knowing they tried to trade him? My guess the Dodgers know they have to deal him for this reason. Sox or Rays.
  7. I can't believe Jackson will make a start in a White Sox uniform because of the money he's owed next year.
  8. It was never Kotsay over Thome for DH. It was Santos over Thome. You just can't carry 12 pitchers and have Thome as a part-time DH on the roster. He doesn't play a position and he's going to have to be pinch-run for in close games. If the Sox were willing to ear Linebrink's contract they'd have re-signed Thome, but the Sox never eat contracts.
  9. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 01:09 PM) You really think 10 at bats is going to change a team's mind about a prospect? No, but he's a tougher sell for KW.
  10. I'm certain Viciedo is involved in any Sox trade talk right now. They have to keep his value as high as possible. If he goes 0-10 with 6 K's, Kenny's plan, whatever it is goes out the window.
  11. I think Corey Patterson would be worth taking a flyer on. Left-handed hitter, solid defensive OF'er at all three positions, and a very good base runner. He should come relatively cheaply too.
  12. Brad Penny went on the DL with a strained Lat 5/22. He was supposed to throw a simulated game today, but had soreness in his bicep. Using that as a very rough guideline Peavy ready again by start of September.
  13. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 6, 2010 -> 09:59 PM) If he tore his bicep, he would be holding his arm. It's a disgusting injury. Nobody is trying to be a doctor here, but he wasn't holding his elbow. Not trying to minimize the injury at all, but it's pure speculation that it has to do with his elbow.
  14. Looked like he was, for lack of a better term reaching, for his tricep. Not an elbow injury.
  15. Surprised by all the Gardenhire love seeing how he coughed up a lead big-time to Ozzie in '08.
  16. Leyland panicked down the stretch last year and it cost the Tigers. Gardenhire has never been the favorite in a pennant race, no one knows how he'll react.
  17. I'll take Ozzie because he doesn't panic.
  18. Most here on Soxtalk wouldn't know a good manager if they hit them in the face. The starters, the offense, and defense have been miserable so far and people honestly think Ozzie should have them up by 5.
  19. Looks like all Ozzie's distractions have given the team time to gel away from the spotlight. Trade for a bat and keep Teahen as far away from third as possible and we have a shot.
  20. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 07:27 PM) Rios has been our second best player this season. He's been worth that contract. Jim Thome is making the same amount of money that Mark Kotsay is. The money was there. Sure he's been worth his contract, but the team is still languishing. KW put together an offense that could not afford a bad year from it's big hitters (i.e. Beckham and Quentin) because there were holes other places. Konerko and Rios are having MVP type seasons and the offense is still one of the worst in the league.
  21. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 07:21 PM) Ozzie is the man behind the most pivotal baseball choices this team made in the offseason. Those being: to bring in Juan Pierre to have an “ideal” leadoff hitter and to forgo Jim Thome in favor of a rotating DH based loosely around mediocre, aging veterans. To say he had nothing to do with the making of this roster is false. Pierre instead of ??? Thome is a part time player without a position AND if you were planning on keeping Santos you needed to carry an extra pitcher and really could not afford to keep a pure DH on the roster. At least not one who isn't an everyday starter and intrical part of the lineup.
  22. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 07:18 PM) It’s not about who is responsible. It’s about who is accountable. By all reason, it should be both of them, but from what we’re hearing Kenny is the one who is going to take the fall for this. The Peavy and Rios acquisitions chewed up too many resources to allow this team a chance at being a serious contender. That is squarely on Kenny.
  23. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 07:13 PM) If KW steps down, and Hahn comes in, Hahn will be nothing more than a puppet. He’ll have ultimately no power beyond suggestion, be immediately placed under Ozzie’s thumb, and everyone in the game will know it. The final call on every decision will be that of Ozzie Guillen. That troubles me greatly. Could not disagree more. The influence of Guillen on the makeup of this roster is greatly exaggerated.
  24. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 07:06 PM) So, you’d be okay with Ozzie Guillen running the day to day personnel decisions for this franchise? That doesn’t worry you in the slightest? If Ozzie really has KW cuckolded then there’s almost nothing that he can do to affect his job status. He could DH Vizquel all he wants, give Kotsay more at-bats, and even push this organization to trade for players who fit his increasingly flawed style of baseball. This is a man who, left to his own devices, could come very close to destroying this franchise. And all we could do is watch. There is no evidence that KW isn't at least as responsible for the product on the field as Guillen is. The truth is KW boxed himself in financially where there were no great options to fill the holes on this team in the offseason. Throwing $15M at Teahen to play 3B is by far worse than any personnel decision Guillen may have had a hand in.
