QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 04:18 PM) The White Sox did in six months what the Cubs still haven't done in three years. He is doing a f***ing incredible job of rebuild. What?
-
Tanaka is a guy who puts this team in contention next year and in the future, imo. They should at least be in the bidding for him (but they won't be.)

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 03:23 PM) They traded Clayton Richard, Adam Russell, Dexter Carter, and Aaron Poreda for Jake Peavy and his remaining contract. Richard was a mid to back of the rotation starter for a couple years and then he blew out his labrum. Russell has been a AAAA reliever his entire career. Carter was released by the Padres, picked up by the White Sox, and then released by the White Sox. Poreda was out of baseball last year and was just recently signed to a minor league deal by the Rangers. Talent wise, Peavy should have commanded much more, but because the Sox were willing to assume a very large remaining contract, even if over the short-term, they were able to pick up an extremely talented pitcher (who was also on the mend) for 4 marginal pitchers. That's where money can be spent. Money + players. Sox don't have the prospects to trade.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 03:20 PM) Marty pushing to trade Sale & still picking on the Sox for not spending money. He knows what he's doing. He knows what happens if Sale is gone for a bunch of busts & Choo is signed to a 15-year $340B contract. Usually when you're walking on clouds it's because you're happy; with Marty it's because the sky can't fall any farther. You think this team will contend next year? I don't.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 02:48 PM) What does this even mean? How many quality free agents are available in July?
-
It's convenient to have money available if they are in contention when there are no players to buy.
-
They'll magically have money if they are contending though. Maybe Tanaka doesn't get posted until July.
-
So this is a punt and a major rebuild

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 11, 2013 -> 09:15 PM) "Downsides of carrying an extra DH". It's been repeated over and over the Dunn signing was terrible.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Dec 11, 2013 -> 12:26 PM) Take out Viciedo & I wholeheartedly agree. Can't do it because he's the one guy some team might overpay for.
-
Deal De Aza, Viciedo, Reed, Beckham, and Ramirez for the best returns possible regardless of position.

Sox acquire Adam Eaton from ARZ, deal Santiago, Jacobs

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Dec 11, 2013 -> 10:14 AM) After I heard him rave about Jeff Marquez's sinkerball I was done putting any value into how he evaluates prospects. Josh Fields and Tyler Flowers will be All-Stars. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 11, 2013 -> 09:37 AM) It's also December 11th. True, but there are less players on the market. -

So far I think they are a ways away from "not punting" 2014. -

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 09:51 PM) Should've mentioned, when I say it was an even trade for the Sox, I mean value-wise in a vacuum. It fits the Sox needs and deals from relative stengths, so even if value is even, it is an overall positive for the team. The problem is they have few assets left to deal. They have to win these trades bigger or buy another piece or two on the free agent market to expedite the rebuild. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 06:57 PM) I want to see what we get out of Eaton first. It could be incremental, but it could ultimately be a significant improvement too. The idea that they are going after a 3B is nice to know. That is an area where a significant improvement should not be difficult to find. Will it be fair to compare the return the Cubs get for Samardzija to the return the Sox got for Santiago? -

It's not that I don't like the trade it's just that it's disappointing that Santiago didn't net them more. This rebuild is going to take some time if they only make incremental improvements in trading the few assets they have. -
QUOTE (Baron @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 10:29 AM) Ding Ding Ding....it could be a massive set back and not only that but Rick Hahn would probably be fired too They lost 99 games with Sale.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 11:04 AM) Tommy John surgery is incredibly successful now a days, so no, it would not. Tommy John still has the "record" for most wins post-surgery.

QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 8, 2013 -> 07:54 PM) Jon Morosi (SI) has really been selling the "trade Chris Sale" stuff. Not based on anything he's heard, but just his own idea. Kinda like Phil Rogers and a Chicago team getting Granderson. He did say a trade would bring back one of the best prospect packages of all-time. What is the best prospect package of all-time?
-
If they are going to spend significantly less -which in and of itself is ok- they need to listen to offers for Sale. Too many holes on this team to keep Sale and spend significantly less. I still think the payroll will be near last year's total.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 8, 2013 -> 10:42 AM) Turn Viciedo and Garcia into big league hitters Hopefully turn Beckham into something useful See if Gillaspie can improve on last year to be a tolerable cheap option at 3b Get Saniago to 200 innings Get Danks back to his old self Give Petricka or Webb innings in the pen to develop at this level Wake De Aza up. Get Johnson and Rienzo to 175 innings each between AAA and the bigs Get Veal back into the 2012 groove Get Semien and Sanchez consistent playing time at AAA Agreed. Also must hit home run with third pick in draft and Hawkins needs to get his foot out of prospect grave.
-
Draft the best arm and stash him in the pen. No need for lefties in the pen this year unless they are one of the best 6 or 7 arms they have.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 07:54 PM) Quite on purpose I left them out because Konerko shouldn't be in the lineup if there's a RH starter on the mound, and PH situations have to be used with some intelligence. The good news I guess is that none of our guys will get hurt this year at any positions other than 1b since our backups are so weak everywhere else. This team threw away ~175 AB's the second half of 2012 by playing Viciedo everyday in left when they were in a pennant race. Your outrage is misplaced, imo.
