Time to up the ante: Sign Bonds to a 1yr deal
CanOfCorn replied to scenario's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 01:44 PM) No, I'm not -- but you didn't state that you hate steroids-cheating...just cheating because they're stealing your money, so I figured, Is that all cheating he's talking about or just certain forms of cheating? I would counter that doctoring the baseball is as significant as doctoring your body, but I've started to develop this view that players should be judged in context and relation to their peers: if everyone was juicing because that medical technology was available for anyone to use and baseball wasn't testing (was, perhaps, encouraging it) then by all means, I don't have the contempt for it that others do. Then again, ask me about Barry Bonds playing for the White Sox and I become a ferocious animal. It's complicated. Using pine tar = illegal in baseball, not illegal in the courts. Using steroids = overlooked in baseball, illegal in the courts. That's why I don't like Barry Bonds. As a baseball player, I like DiMaggio. As a man, he's abhorrent. So is Barry Bonds, and that's the difference. Joe D. is a great baseball player without the on-field cheating. Now, if something came up that said DiMaggio took steroids, maybe I'll change my tune. One more thing: greenies. I know that for YEARS players have been taking uppers and they are illegal, as well. I really don't know what to say about this...I understand a 162 game season with all the travelling is hard on anybody...and if someone was caught with them, I think they should be suspended and possibly arrested. -
QUOTE(The Beast @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 12:37 PM) Whoa, I still didn't have my question answered. Where does it say that we were interested in Fukudome, what was the dollar amount and number of years, and who was pursuing him? It was mentioned in the Trib, I think by Cowley and ESPN. No years or dollar amounts from the White Sox, but I think I heard the Padres offered 3/$30 mil. Clubs interested: Cubs, Padres, Royals, White Sox.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 12:30 PM) Orbital fractures incurred while chasing fly balls: Rowand: 2 Hunter: 0 What other statistics do you need? Point. Counter-point. Rowand is great, for a grinder, but I can't see the Sox spending too much money on him. Or if they give him more money, not adding more years. BTW, anyone know when Fukudome is going to decide? Has he mentioned a day?

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 12:06 PM) I would let f***ing Butterbean clog up the bases if it meant getting on base 230 times. There is nothing wrong with a guy who "clogs up the bases" when he gets on base at a ".480" clip. OK...that's good for you. But, I wouldn't. -
From ESPN (and why Bora$$ is a jackass):

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 10:58 AM) Look at the team's individual final numbers even in 2007. Who would you expect to be drastically better in 2008? The guy counted on Podsednik and Erstad in 2007. I don't know how much more you need to know. The pitching staff wasn't so great in 2007. He's added Linebrink and subtracted Garland, and now says the pitching, ranked 12th out of 14th last year, will not be a problem. Why, because he said so? Not to be a jerk but, pitching and hitting WILL be a problem next year, because YOU said so?

QUOTE(Brian @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 05:21 PM) LPGA has plenty of hot women playing IMO. And only about 25% of them would be interested in you.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 10:08 AM) The quote that bothers me is the quote about Danks. He calls him a front of the rotation starter and says they sat him because they knew what they had. Then why wouldn't they sit Jenks, or Konerko or Vazquez or Buerhle don't they know what they have in them? It was an outright lie. This was a 90 loss team. They can play with all the chips on their shoulders they can find, but it won't make them a contender. They need some new players. KW knows it. Its why he tried to get Hunter and Cabrera. He just tries to throw this other BS out because he knows there are those that because of 2005 think he can do no wrong. this was Danks first full season in the majors. Probably the most innings he's pitched in a season. Why throw him out there, cause more stress on his (probably) tired arm WHEN YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE? Seriously, I'm disappointed too. But I'm not going to convict the organization for things that were partially out of their control. And one of the reasons the Sox played well in 2005, is BECAUSE of a chip on their shoulder. No one thought they would be THAT good. Hey, I'm not saying this team is going to the playoffs, but I'm also not going to say that it can't or won't happen BEFORE we've hit 2008, either. This is Kenny Williams. He doesn't care what you or I think. And either does Jerry or the board, but they love him. And until he isn't, he's the White Sox GM, who, by the way, is the FIRST GM in 88 years to win a World Series.

Another baseball reason...clogging up the bases. Yeah, he'll get on base a lot, but with Konerko, Thome, Dye and Pierzynski on base around him, the team will be even more station to station. If Thome weren't here, I think I'd agree, but we have a DH. -
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 09:57 AM) Confidence is one thing. Ridiculous and outright lying is another. If it helps the Sox play with a chip on their shoulders...then, who cares?

QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 09:47 AM) Meche and Guillen were good signings. Meche was excellent last season and Guillen is coming off a .900 OPS sesaon. It's a much better use of money than paying a .790 OPS centerfielder $15M a year like the Sox might be about to. Just my opinion, but I'd rather have Moore (KC's GM) running the Sox than Kenny Williams. Meche was a decent signing. Guillen is getting paid to sit out for awhile. Guillen is being overpaid.
-
I guess some people would rather have the Sox brass say things like, "We suck...yep, that's right, I said it. We stuck to our guns and didn't overpay. We gave what we thought were good offers. We offered fair price for free agents. But, our fan base wants us to do things that we tried to do, but couldn't for whatever reason. So, flame on." No matter how ridiculous it sounds, I want that confidence, even if it borders on ridiculous. Cuz, if he doesn't believe it, then no one else will. Go ahead folks, flame on.

Sox Acquire Carlos Quentin for Chris Carter; DFA Heath Phillips
CanOfCorn replied to SoxFan1's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 02:20 AM) Not that I am in any way comparing them (though both being from Stanford is a little weird), but isn't that also somewhat similar to Joe Borchard too? Except that Quentin recognized it and is doing something about it...Borchard didn't. -
QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 05:03 PM) Roberts and Bedard are better than Willis and Cabrerra I believe. Give them Gio, Danks, Fields, Richar and another AAAA pitcher. I would say Cabrera > Roberts, but Bedard > Willis. The Tigers got the better, if this would happen. Plus, Bedard can't stay healthy.

QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 04:36 PM) I am tired of it. I posted this same type of reply to something on the board. We hear it every year. We will spend the money to build a winner, but we only see the opposite. Bottom line (so to speak)...at the end of the day...baseball is a business. We see it every year. Big market teams spend more (and the Sox are STILL up over $100 mil)...but my point is, you shouldn't overspend, years or money. You aren't going to please everyone...as seen on this board. The Hunter deal was fair at 5/$75 considering what the market is. Angels overpaid and now have a $10 million/year 4th outfielder. Tigers overspent and got a great player, but they BETTER win within a couple years, because they don't have replacements besides Porcello. The White Sox spend money, but not excessive amounts...and that's not going to change...so support the team they can put on the field and just keep it in the back of your mind, not everything works out in life. I'm glad the Sox didn't match the Angels offer and I'm glad Kenny stood his ground and said they wanted Cabrera ONLY. Yeah, it sucks, but let's see who takes the field on opening day before we blow up the 2008 season.

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 04:19 PM) Terrible idea by the Brewers....Iguchi might need a cut-off man to reach 1b. After a disappointing couple of days, I needed a laugh...and that did it. Thanks, Mr. Pessimism!!!

QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 12:12 PM) It's possible. I'm not sure why they didn't beat the Tigers' offer, probably because they didn't want to accept Dontrelle back. I know this mucn, the Angels have always liked Konerko, he is their kind of player, his salary is reasonable, and new GM Tony Reagins now has a working relationship with KW. Obviously I am just speculating, but he they would certainly be at the top of the list for suitors in a possible Konerko deal. Assuming they haven't already brought it up during the O-Cab talks, that is. Maybe the Angels are worried about Paulie's hip? Maybe they have their sights set on someone else now. I think Kenny would have to be absolutely blown away by an offer for Konerko. Not saying it couldnt' happen, but like Balta said, they are very reluctant to give away their young pieces. Why for Miguel then? Because he's 24.
-
QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 11:58 AM) You could clear $12 million by dealing Konerko, and Crede's $ will come off the books either at the deadline, or after this season, whenever he is traded or walks. True, but Konerko's a deal is below market and he's signed for another 3 (?) years.

QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 11:43 AM) What a pathetic fan base we are begging for Kenny Lofton. Why dont we just put Rock Raines at the lead off spot? I wasn't begging for him. I was merely posing a question. If the Sox want a "traditional" lead-off man, that can play CF and has a good OBP AND they don't trust Owens, Sweeney or Anderson...well, there's Kenny Lofton. No where did I say, "Go git him, K-Dub!!!" Here's the other thing...he could probably be had for a one year contract, so you aren't getting Rowand for 4, Jones for however many, etc. It's called flexibility. and it's called a suggestion. Maybe instead of ripping people on the Sox and on the board, you can give some constructive criticism. I'm not losing sleep one way or the other.... DAMN, this board pisses me off sometimes.
-
QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 11:40 AM) Close this thread....no thanks. Can you at least give a reason other than...no thanks?
-
QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 11:33 AM) What is there to contribute to this discussion, KW is getting played like dog. If he does a move that is decent, i will eat crow all offseason. Angels OVERPAID. Tigers OVERPAID. No team went as high as the Angels for Hunter, obviously, it sounded like Hunter was surprised he was being offered that and took it. The Tigers took Willis who, it seems, the Sox didn't want AND dealt away their replacement for a 42 year old LHP and their top position prospect. Plus, the Sox didn't have the horses to get the Marlin deal done, which IS Kenny's fault. But, people seem to forget, they fired the guy in charge of the minors...this new guy may be trying to start from scratch. Maybe he didn't like Carter as much as BA or anyone else did? Just like a new CEO or GM or anything, they want to make their mark and that mean cleaning out the old guys personnel. Give Wilder, Regier, Bell and Laumann do in the next draft.
-
Can play CF...has a good OBP...is fast and a free agent. I know he's old, but he seemed to be pretty good last year for the Rangers and Indians...and gives the Sox some extra time to look for a CF of the future. Discuss....
-
So let's say Crede "builds up his value" by playing 3B. How much more do you think you are going to get for a 2 month rental? Remember he's a boras client and if he does come back strong, then Boras is DEFINITELY going to want to put him on the open market. While I understand what people are saying, I don't think keeping him around is going to get the Sox any more than they would get right now. Unless everyone is intent on getting the draft picks when he leaves, which would be ok, if that's what you want.

QUOTE(rockren @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 10:58 AM) Like someone on this board said- "If Uribe can see his feet, he's a good SS." If Uribe's off the field distractions are past him, I'd like to see him brought back next year. I feel we owe him that, just on that 9th Inning in Game 4 of the WS in '05. As far as him being crap compared to Burke......hey if you like Burke, then that's fine. But if that really were the case Houston wouldn't be looking to deal the guy. Wow, did you really just write that??? The league is littered with players that a team soured on for whatever reason and found success elsewhere...how about Jon Rauch, for one? If the Astros deal Burke, they will regret it. Matsui is
