  1. According to Jeff Brantley, Closer-by-Committees don't work. I say...see: 2005 Chicago White Sox. Lead the AL in saves and 2 off the major league lead.
  2. If we are talking about one year, it would have to be Hoyt in '83. If we are talking about multiple years, Black Jack is #1, Buehrle is #1a.
  3. Unfortunately, they will probably take votes away from each other. So that leaves Rogers and Halladay.
  4. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 04:08 PM) But doesn't it make more sense for a profitable team to eat some of the $ in the contracts for the older players & deal them? Oswalt is one of the best young starters in MLB. I just don't see the logic for a team playing in the 4th/5th biggest market that is drawing 32K+/gm to deal him. I would imagine Pettite or Clemens would go first. Unfortunately, both Pettitte and Clemens signed with the Astros to be close to home. I don't think Clemens would be traded unless it's to the Rangers or the Yankees, if they make a run. Pettitte has been oft-injured. Clemens is probably done after this year anyway and if they deal Oswalt, he for sure will be done. I can't see them dealing any of their pitchers. Once Biggio and Bagwell are off the books, they should have a decent team. At least above average.
  5. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 03:47 PM) I don't know if Texas has got enough quality starting pitching to hold up over a 5 game series, let alone a 7 game series. But when their bats are on fire, it might not even matter. Offense wins games. Pitching and defense win series. And we haven't played the Rangers at Comiskey yet.
  6. All that matters right now is winning the division. Don't worry about what commentators are saying or anyone in the press. ESPN does a decent job with highlights, but you also have to remember that they are based in Bristol, smack dab between Boston and New York and while the anchors and reporters are from all over the country, the producers and assistant producers and production assistants that watch the games are probably primarily from the east coast. I would guess from DC on up. And as for the Nationals, the fact that this is the former Youppi!'s, it is a big story.
  7. QUOTE(Al Lopez's Ghost @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 03:25 PM) One of their points was that the Sox have never won a playoff series. Now, you can argue that this is irrelevant, and you'd have a good point. One other point they had was the landscape is going to change when teams make trades prior to the end of July. That's probably true too. I think B and B are terrifically funny, and when they say something I disagree with, I don't take it personally. That first point is irrelevant...the Marlins hadn't won a playoff series in '97. I don't know if the Angels had ever won a playoff series before the won the WS. The only thing that will derail this team in the playoffs, if we make it (don't want to jinx it), is injuries or if they stop playing "smart ball" and start swinging for the fences.
  8. Since I live in Austin, I get a look at the Astros Triple-A team the Round Rock Express on a semi-regular basis and let me tell you, except for the short cup of coffee Luke Scott got this year, they have no outfielders here. They have Luke Scott, Barry Wesson and Charles Gipson. Plus, they have former Sox Chris Tremie behind the plate. They had Raul Chavez, but I don't know if they called him back up or not. They are well stocked on infield prospects, though. Not going to speculate on what the trade would be, just want to present who the Express have. Round Rock Express Stats
  9. Do we have enough spots available for these players + Rush + Sherron Collins?
  10. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 09:01 PM) Truly amazing, with great history. After I read the plaque, I went back inside and I got goosebumps just thinking about the Black Sox having been on trial in the same building where I was standing. The fifth floor (I think) is where my ex used to work and they modernized the interior (it's a post production house where they edit commercials and the like)...it's awesome the way it looks inside and what they did. I always wanted to work there. But, alas, they didn't want me. It's worth it just to meander around that floor...if they'll let you, that is.....
  11. My ex-wife used to work in that building. It's very creepy at night. But a real cool building. They used to say all of the things Medias says, but also, some other things. They have a staircase that goes around the elevator, so you can't see around corners and I've heard people see a woman in early 20th Century garb going around the next corner. When they get to the next floor, there's no one there. And they used to hang people behind the courthouse where the fire station is now. All I know is I used to get drunk on the fifth floor and smoke with one of the enormous windows open. Beautiful building, inside and out.
  12. If pure numbers were the measure of a teams ability to win, then the Yankees would have won every year from 1996. With maybe the Red Sox thrown in a year or two. If a team is hitting .250, but .300 w/ RISP and RISP w/ 2 outs, they are probably winning more games than a team hitting .300 w/ .250 and .250. It's simplifying the argument.
  13. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 03:45 PM) Speaking of Dumbasses and Insider Info, does anyone around here have ESPN insider? The Royals rah rah Rob Neyer has some disparaging information about the White Sox and why they shouldnt be winning, and I was wondering what it entailed. The story is in the middle of the ESPN page under Ozzies smiling face with the title "The White Sox are winning games they shouldn't win. Rob Neyer offers three American League stats that you should know. " If it could be posted I would be a happy drinker This is the White Sox part of the Rob Neyer article. There is more, but it's about the Red Sox plunking batters.
  14. And again, a columnist fails to mention things like: The gobs of charity work that the White Sox do that "The Northside Team" doesn't do. Promotions like "Turn Back the Clock" Night, which, I believe was started here, but now every team and even other leagues do. Elvis Night Dog Day Sleepover Night Give it about 15 years and the youth, the ones that enjoy going to Fundamentals and the above promotions, will be Sox fans. It's not easy to turn adults into fans. You have to work on the next generation and I think the White Sox are doing just that. Just look at the age of some of our posters!!!

    School Colors

The ABSOLUTE worst colors are Virginia Techs colors...purple and orange. Second worst are Western Michigan's colors...brown and yellow. Ick. High School: Purple and White College: Orange and Blue
  16. Tallon is an insider, Smith was an outsider. Tallon may be able to work Pullme and DB Wirtz in a different direction. I like this move...plus it's new AND YOUNGER blood.
  17. If you saw the Sunday night game where Pods caused Weaver to pay so much attention to him that he twisted his ankle and threw the ball into the stands...that's what Pods gives us that CLee doesn't. If we didn't have Konerko or Everett or Thomas or Dye, I would say we need Lee. Milwaukee needed someone to drive in runs, protect Geoff Jenkins and Lyle Overbay and they got him in Carlos Lee.
  18. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jun 20, 2005 -> 08:26 PM) maybe someone needs to realize that we are only 68 games into this season. there are still 96 games left, or rather 59% of the entire season left. 8.5 games is not that much to make up in that time. Have you guys been White Sox fans for more than 2 months? We are a team that is known to blow it in the second half. Look at our 2003 team! How did they blow it? The Twins are a well managed ball club that is really, really good. I don't fear the Indians as much as the Twins, but the Tribe are an incredibly well balanced offensive club that should have been clubbing all season, and they have a good rotation. I love this White Sox team, and I pray that they do well, and I would cry like a little girl if they won the Series. HOWEVER, this season is still young, and there are many battles ahead. We may have come back to win against the Dodgers two games in a row, but some would say that we shouldn't have been down to a .500 team so late in the games anyway. We need to start hitting, and not waiting for the other team's starters to roll their ankles. Let's go Sox! But again...they shouldn't worry about a team that is behind them...until they play them. If they start worrying about that stuff, then the will start to lose that lead. They are playing the Royals and they should worry about the Royals. Then this weekend, they are playing the Cubs and they should worry about the Cubs. The rest will play itself out. And for the record, this team looks to be gaining confidence day by day. The more they win games like the last two, the more they believe they can win EVERY game. And that will protect them from the let-downs they battled last year.
  19. When she retires/passes away, they should have a celebrity organist for each game. I can see it now, churches from around the country will be sending their organists for a day at the park. Nancy!!!
  20. Tell him the Sox will trade Karchner for him.
  21. QUOTE(sox-r-us @ Jun 20, 2005 -> 04:51 PM) The one good thing about the Tribe getting hot is that they will play the twinkies hard down the stretch as they go for the wild card at least That can only help us.... This is something that we need to keep in the back of our minds too as we debate this. If Cleveland and Minnesota are beating up on each other, that is to our benefit. Also, if Detroit and KC keep playing the way they've been playing the last couple of weeks, I can't see either catching up. But, again, I don't worry about either Cleveland or Minnesota or any other team until the first pitch is thrown in the first game of the series.

    Summer Concerts

Possibly ACL Festival in Sept. Although Coldplay is the headliner, which kinda goes against everything I would want in a concert. But, there are 150 other bands...so, I think I could leave before that. It's also 100 degrees in the shade in Austin in September...so that would suck.
  23. QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Jun 20, 2005 -> 02:30 PM) Essentially the way I feel. I'd say we are almost at the point that if we didn't win this division, it would be considered a choke. We don't even have to win at the rate we are right now (If we did, we'd have 110 wins at the end of the season, imagine that). As long as we play steady ball and keep the losing streaks from getting too long, we should be in very good position. When you start looking behind you, you stop looking forward. I don't think you worry about Cleveland or Minnesota until you play them.
