QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 02:36 PM) Accepted. Wrong. Wrong. Guillen knew about the last two, as far as I can tell -- hard to not know about Crede's bad back and Iguchi's sore hand -- and they played not because he didn't know but because they thought they could play through and he gave them playing time. Sorry. Nope, during the first Cubs series, Ozzie was upset that Crede didn't tell him that his back was acting up. Also, Iguchi didn't tell anyone that he injured his finger sliding for a few days after it happened (not to characterize, but Japanese players are notorious for not speaking up about injuries).

QUOTE(SEALgep @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 02:28 PM) Oh, by no means am I implying that we'll sign FA solely due to Ozzie's presence. But if the manager position is in question, that works against you at the bargaining table... All I meant was that players like to play for Ozzie, and it is just an advantage, not a determinent. And I'll repeat that the only sport where a coaches/managers contract position matters when someone chooses a team is in college recruiting. I don't think free agents are backing away from signing huge deals with the Astros because Phil Garner is a prick, etc. It's all about the money with free agents, and 99 pct of the time, they don't care who the coach is. An example would be Carlos Zambrano. He'll be more likely to listen to a Sox offer due to his friendship with Ozzie....however, if a team like the Mets gives him more money than we offer, he'll go there 99 out of 100 times.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 02:25 PM) Most players don't go crying to their managers about little injuries. It's a pride thing, and a necessity thing, and a playing time thing. Who wants to be the one to tell the manager that they've got a toe wart and a fever? s***. I don't recall any other incident where Ozzie has a player not telling him about pain except, perhaps, Freddy, but I'm sure everyone knew and that goes back to the whole Pride thing. Marte, Crede, Iguchi

QUOTE(Soxfest @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 11:17 AM) I love how KW said" He is tired of the safe pick" yet the Sox will not draft a high talent Boras client for example just like in this years draft and Schaffer was not involved in Porada pick. Sox management is in total denial. KW wasn't involved in the Poreda pick either.

QUOTE(GreenSox @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 02:15 PM) It would be nice of Williams would pencil in a center fielder who could hit worth a damn. OH well, Erstad is a grade A hacker (check) - doesn't waste at bats by walking (check) and he doesn't disrespect Ozzie or Ozzie Jr (check); He's a true Sox, Ozzie-style. Mac Dougal is not worse than Jones, is younger and no way would we have given up 2 live arms for Jones last year. Mac Dougal for Jones this year would be a bad, bad trade for the Sox. At this point, I'd rather just keep using MacDougal for the rest of the year to see if he shows some improvement.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 02:15 PM) 1. Ozzie pulled Buehrle because of pitch count. 2. Buehrle's not a...Burnett. He makes his starts. "Flu-like symptoms." What, is he supposed to cry to Ozzie and Ozzie's supposed to kiss his forehead? Whether or not Buehrle wasn't feeling well isn't a big deal, and the fact that he hadn't told Ozzie doesn't mean s***. It probably wasn't too serious. All I'm saying is that it seems like there's an incident every couple of weeks where our player isn't telling Ozzie about some type of injury/illness. I wonder if this goes on with every big league team, and we only find out about our guys because we follow the team so closely.

QUOTE(SEALgep @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 02:08 PM) I certainly don't have a problem with it. We're obviously going to see some changes with the personnel on the team, but I think it puts the Sox at an advantage to have the security of the manager position. Meaning, the potential newcomers don't have to wonder who they would be reporting to. It's been noted many times that players would like to play for Ozzie, so I feel this is a good move. Why not knock it out if you're planning on doing it anyway. And as said in an earlier post - Ozzie isn't the problem. Does it reallly matter when you're not going to go out and spend money in the FA market? Remember how everyone used to say every player dreamed of signing with the Cubs to play with Dusty Baker? That didn't really work out....players want the cash, and that's it.

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 03:47 AM) Why is that nice? Why is that ever nice? The only way you pick that high is if it is a trade or your team really sucked the previous year. I don't ever want my team to really suck. This is never nice. Or you can go for it and take a chance when a mega-talent like Porcello falls into your lap in the mid 20s.

The only way Jones can be valuable to a team now is if he's put in CF. However, at least with the rumors today, we can guarantee he'll kick our ass today if he plays.
-
Pods is playing today, Gonzalez is in RF due to Dye being unavailable. Pods/Terrero/Gonzalez might be the worst Sox outfield in history. With Dye likely going on the DL, KW should be very proud of everything he's done this year.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/sto...mp;sportCat=mlb Solid article about the Sox from espn.com. Nice to see more amazing communication between a player and Ozzie (Buehrle).
-
The worst thing is that Jones has another year left on his deal. I have so little faith in KW right now to do the right thing.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 02:19 AM) Kenny Rogers had a nice season debut. 6 innings 2 hits 0 runs Reason #5,006 why the Sox have no prayer this year.

Erstad didn't have your typical twisted ankle. This is the type of ligament injury where you're going to keep on straining it. QUOTE(greg775 @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 12:08 AM) That was one heckuva catch at least. You are all right. He should have been a fourth outfielder. He'd have been better in that role than Mack, who also can't hit. That was one great catch, though. Nice grab Mr. Erstad, good hustle on the play as well. That catch is going to become legendary, I have a feeling.

Jayson Stark says Braves are looking at Buerhle

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 12:02 AM) There ain't a chance in hell Schuerholz makes that deal, you're probably not even going to get Saltalamacchia alone for Buehrle, you're f***ing crazy if you think they'll be trading their starting firstbaseman in Thorman (#7 prospect), their backup plan at first in Salty (#1 prospect) and their top pitching prospect in Harrison (#3 prospect) for 2.5-3 months of Buehrle. I'm telling you, it's only going to get worse for the next month. -
Jayson Stark says Braves are looking at Buerhle
fathom replied to harfman77's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
If it wasn't for the rivalry, the Cubs would be an ideal trading partner for AJ. They have some talented middle infielders (Patterson, Fontenot) and a solid young outfielder they'll deal (Murton). -
Pods left today's game after 3 innings. I have a feeling he'll get called up, and Erstad will go back on the DL. However, if Pods reinjured himself today, that might be the funniest sequence of events I can ever recall.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 22, 2007 -> 11:45 PM) It sucks our organization where it HAS to trade Buehrle for the sake of having any chance in the future isn't it? Like I said during the game thread, I fear the idea that the Sox will sign Rowand this offseason with the mindset that it will take off some of the heat from the fans for letting Buehrle and Dye leave.
-
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 22, 2007 -> 11:43 PM) I just got back from the game and can tell you Dye is about a millimeter from having to go on the DL. Those looking for a big return on a trade for him are going to be dissapointed I believe. Nick Masset is just not very good. He needs to go to the minors and show he can get people out. I think we are not very far from seeing bags on heads at games. People were actually laughing at the Pride and Passion things they put on the pre game video. You're not getting anything more than two B level prospects right now for Dye. I also think him saying how close he is to going on the DL is a little payback for the Sox brass b****ing about him not demanding that he stays with the Sox.

Going to U.S. Cellular for the first time
fathom replied to Grebeck Fan Club's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I have my suspicions that Grebeck Fan Club is actually Gavin Floyd. -
QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Jun 22, 2007 -> 11:22 PM) If this is true, one has to wonder why KW did not make this move sooner. It is not as though KW is above hurting feelings. Hard to justify changes when things are going well.
-
Mark Buehrle and Jon Garland are the only two people in this organization that can keep their heads up.
-
This umpire has been absolutely horrible. This would be a perfect time for Ozzie to go nuts.
-
Masset's ERA on the climb to 7. Haha...we ph for Terrero, one of the few guys who deserves playing time.
-
So a catcher can score on a shallow hit to left field? Superb range by Uribe once again to knock the ball down.
