Dye for Abreu?
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 09:16 PM) So in other words F-U-C-K the real thing - lets go after cheap prospects who MAY be good. What if they got Abreu for half the salary then went after 2 relievers and brought up Chris Getz? I doubt we ever spend that much for relievers anyway. It doesn't seem very smart to spend that type of money on relievers. You usually don't get your money's worth. If he wants to spend that much money on an outfielder for next year, then hold on to Dye the rest of this year, get the high compensation picks, and then go after Ichiro. Bobby Abreu is a bad baseball player. He's lazy, and his power numbers make it look obvious he was a steroid user. Oh, and the last thing we need is another guy who can't his lefty starting pitching. I was reading a scouting report on Abreu the other day about how he looks like he's done. BTW, Jermaine Dye is likely to be the best power hitter, along with Teixeira, that could possibly be available come the trading deadline. You absolutely should expect to get good prospects in return.

Dye for Abreu?
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 09:04 PM) Boo Dye and Abreu - Hooray prospects! I really don't understand this logic. Unless of course this prospect is major league ready - but then why would the other team do that deal. Because for the amount of money that Abreu would take up, I'd rather get a few projectable minor leaguers and then go spend that 16 million dollars on 2 relievers and a 2nd baseman.

Dye for Abreu?
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 08:27 PM) They are mad about that? What is he supposed to say? That is ludicrous! Where did you hear or read this? I was happy to see all of them go besides McDowell. On the Score this morning, they said members within the organization were upset that he didn't seem to care if he stayed with the team or not.

North vs South question for the ages... or at least 07
That's easy...the Cubs. We have three teams in our division to compete with better than any team in their division. If they win 85 games this year, there's a great chance they make the playoffs. We'd have to win at least 90 games, if not more.

clearing out our bullpen
QUOTE(briguy27 @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 05:48 PM) how about getting matt capps from the pirates? this year he is 2-2 with a 2.97 era, and last year he posted a 3.77 era, but also pitched 80 innings out of the pen, so he is a horse. and how about picking up al reyes from TB? he has a 2.19 era this year in 24 innings oh and he is hitting .333 in his career, so maybe he can pinch hit for konerko sometime The Pirates want the world for him.

It's Official
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 05:23 PM) These pitchers are basically crap. They should do better than Aaardsma and MaaacDougal have done, but worse than what you would have thought would have been average for them. This is beyond embarrassing right now.

AGon sent down?
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 04:50 PM) So are the extra strikeouts and significant drop off in defense worth a few extra walks? Especially when Crede has a history of being a decent hitter. I'd have no problem with more strike outs if Fields can hit more doubles and walk more. Crede is having an incredible unproductive year at the plate. And don't forget that Fields will also give us more speed on the bases, and break up the 3-7 plodders this team has.

Dye for Abreu?
Now I'm actually kinda worried that this trade might happen. Sounds like the organization is pissed that Dye said baseball is a business, and if he gets traded, he'll go play hard somewhere else. Only in this organization can someone say the politically correct thing....and get in hot water for it.

It's Official
QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 04:35 PM) It's because he's the best candidate in the organization at "long man." If not for the second game of the season against CLE and the Cubs' Sunday sweep avoider, he would be history too. The only solution is to flip-flop him with Gavin Floyd, Lance Broadway, Heath Phillips or Charles Haeger. Maybe it would work, maybe it wouldn't. He has definitely shown some flashes, though. Maybe we can just pitch Masset when the wind is blowing in 20 mph or it's 20 degrees out.

Dye for Abreu?
QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 04:26 PM) I think there's a really good chance this deal happens. Rosenthal wrote that the Sox like the option of keeping Abreu for $16MM in '08. To me, that says they know they'll need to sign a major league OF for next season, but they don't feel they can go long-term which rules out signing a premier free agent. So instead, they like the idea of blowing $16M on Abreu because it will only be 1 year. So the deal would combine 2 great Sox features: Ozzie Guillen cronyism + half-assed solutions to avoid long-term financial commitment. This makes no sense at all! Let's just basically throw away any chance at improving the team in the offseason by giving Abreu 16 million. That would make him one of the highest paid players in baseball....and he's not even one of the top 50 players in baseball. He's also probably the only guy over the last few seasons who has struck out looking more than Pods has.

Dye for Abreu?
QUOTE(Wedge @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 04:14 PM) Well, at least we know that Abreu doesn't upgrade our RF defense. Anybody see that brilliant play he made in last night's game? Abreu is one of the worst players in baseball when you combine his production with his salary.

Dye for Abreu?
Bad news: the Score hosts confirmed that Ozzie and Abreu are close buddies.

Jerry Owens or Felix Pie
Pie's faster....but that's nothing to be ashamed about.

clearing out our bullpen
QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 05:38 AM) The Tigers just released Jose Mesa. Signing him would move KW a step closer to his dream of acquiring all of the key 1990s Cleveland Indians players. I look forward to his eventual signing of a 45-year old Omar Vizquel as well Funny that you mention Mesa and Vizquel. If they were on the same team, they might kill each other.

2007 MLB Catch-All Thread
Lots of scouts seem to think he wants to go play SS for the Cubs next year.

Why fire Guillen? Williams? or Walker?
QUOTE(iamshack @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 03:49 AM) Their two young starters also made it through three innings a piece the last two games. Toronto has their own problems....if we could only combine the best players from every other team we would be awesome. Which other starter? McGowan seems to be "getting it".

AGon sent down?
QUOTE(knightni @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 03:47 AM) and Masset. Oh that's right....we're fine!

Why fire Guillen? Williams? or Walker?
QUOTE(iamshack @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 03:44 AM) No. They have two. Casey Jannsen and Jeremy Accardo. The grass is always greener. Toronto, prior to heating up over the past week, was eight games under .500. Wolfe was pretty damn impressive with how hard he was throwing today.

AGon sent down?
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 03:40 AM) If Gio came up as a reliever, I could support that. Gives him a taste of the League, and it's the old-time route to the rotation. He's not the first guy I'd call up, though. I'd enjoy seeing Gio called up. Give us another thing to add to the list of exciting aspects on this team.

Why fire Guillen? Williams? or Walker?
QUOTE(iamshack @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 03:18 AM) You act as though we have a high-priced bullpen... No...what I'm saying is that they have a lot of hard throwers in their organization that they've developed. Meanwhile, we don't.

AGon sent down?
If the Sox put MacDougal on waivers, he'll get claimed in a second. He has a reasonable contract, and teams will think they can fix his mechanics.

Why fire Guillen? Williams? or Walker?
QUOTE(iamshack @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 03:02 AM) You act as though bullpen's are a simple thing to assemble. I know you're smart enough to know they aren't. As the resident genius in Cleveland about that last season. I can only imagine if we kept track of what everyone's great moves around here would be how incredibly laughable it would be. No, I know they're difficult. But I also know KW made a huge mistake this offseason in thinking that guys throwing hard is the main thing. I've always thought that having relievers with good sinkers is huge, as you can make the opposition put the ball in play and not worry about the long ball as much. The ironic thing is that our bullpen guys really don't throw that hard. Only Jenks and Thornton reach 96 mph. Heck, the Blue Jays had more velocity from their relievers than we do, and that was a bullpen where just about everyone makes the minimum.

Why fire Guillen? Williams? or Walker?
QUOTE(iamshack @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 02:56 AM) Honestly fathom, if everything is so terrible all the time, why do you even get out of bed in the morning? It's not...I had a delightful day today, despite the Sox game. But when someone says that KW did an awesome job at putting together this team this offseason or that the Sox had the best offense in 2006, I'm going to laugh at that.

The Time To Act... Unfortunately is Now.
QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 02:46 AM) Kenny Williams is the 5th best GM in the Central division and has overseen the "construction" of the worst farm system in major league baseball. If Kenny wants to be really proactive here, his next move might be to fire himself. I love that last line....best laugh I've had all weekend that didn't involve the Cubs.
