Opening Day: White Sox vs. Indians, 4/2/07 (L)
fathom replied to Steve9347's topic in 2007 Season in Review
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Apr 2, 2007 -> 05:22 PM) The Dodgers line up with a bunch of old guys who are blocking good young players, i.e. Luis Gonzalez blocking Matt Kemp? That Dodgers lineup? I like the balance on that team, as they have a bunch of good overall hitters. If used correctly, I think Gonzalez can really benefit that team. Did Kemp even make their opening day roster? -

One of my favorite things on opening days is to go around and check the starting lineups for teams. Congrats to Borchard for starting for the Marlins today. The Dodgers lineup seems very solid as well, especially when Furcal gets back. Ozzie would love to manage that team. -

QUOTE(jphat007 @ Apr 2, 2007 -> 05:10 PM) So hows work? Sitting at home watching all these games sucks... Detroit off to a good start. Losing to the Jays 1-0 with man on 2nd, nobody out I decided to take today off. -

Interesting Philly article on Garcia, many quotes
fathom replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
My favorite part is when they say he gets into the 8th or 9th inning a lot. My grandma could pitch into the 8th inning if she had the same standards that Ozzie does for leaving in his starters. Good luck though to Garcia....I can't believe what he did during the 2005 postseason. -
QUOTE(Brian @ Apr 2, 2007 -> 02:45 PM) I'm sure the guy didn't make it up. He had to get it from somewhere and leads me to believe they were talking and close, but some of the little things needed to be agreed on. I always laugh at people who bash beat writers or reporters just because they write something and it doesn't end up happening. Doesn't mean what he was reporting was wrong. That was all speculation by the author. Pretty foolish of him to word it the way he did. At least this is some more good news.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Apr 1, 2007 -> 03:24 AM) He should just ditch the damn changeup, it's the one pitch that hurts him the most, by far, and everything else he was throwing looked good yesterday. I think if he dumped the change for good, he'd be better off. I don't mind the changeup, as long as he doesn't throw it for a strike. Garland's the one who always gets his changeup hit into the picnic area at the Cell.
-
His changeup looked awful....his velocity was solid.
-
There's at least two people on this site that know for a fact that a few players dislike him. Also, I guess it's easy to say your players like you when you get rid of the ones that don't. Don't get me wrong....for the most part, Ozzie is definitely a player's manager.

Which Tribe players would actually start for us?

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Mar 31, 2007 -> 07:14 PM) In Delluci's last three seasons, his OBP is right around .350. You also fail to mention the fact that Delluci slugs close to 75 points higher than Pods. I'd bet a lot of money that Delluci has a better year than Pods next year. Oh, and all the intangibles in the world don't make up for the offensive difference between Pierzynski and Martinez. The last three years, Pierzynski's OPS+ is right around 90 and Martinez' is right around 125. Really, it's not even close. Don't forget that Dellucci will only be used against RHP, which will make him even better. The Indians have Michaels to platoon with him and Trot in RF. If Perralta can get back to 75 pct of the form he had in 2005, the Indians are going to have an amazing offense. -

QUOTE(jphat007 @ Mar 31, 2007 -> 06:21 PM) I wonder where everybody is to come jump on BA for a misjudged ball? Can't see the game....but I can already tell you it's going to get annoying when any ball Erstad doesn't catch turns into "Brian Anderson would have had that". -

QUOTE(scenario @ Mar 31, 2007 -> 04:39 PM) There's still no comparison. VMart is the Michael Barrett of the American League, only Barrett is actually a much better catcher. That should pretty much tell the story. And AJ "struggled last year"??? What are you talking about? Our pitchers were awful last year. If he's going to get all the credit for how they pitched in 2005, then he deserves some criticism for 2006. -
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Mar 31, 2007 -> 02:12 PM) In your eye Fathom and others, I knew Ozzie would do something like this. He can't leave his boy out of the Opening Day lineup. All I can do is laugh at this. You forgot to include the part about how he's want to have it be Pods/Erstad/Thome, even against the LHP.

QUOTE(scenario @ Mar 31, 2007 -> 04:33 PM) AJ set the American League record (all-time) for consecutive games without an error last year. And handling the staff, he's like a coach on the field. VMart has a noodle for an arm and looks like a first baseman trying to catch. And he's clueless about calling a game... looking into the dugout practically the entire game. No comparison. Errors for catchers is a pointless statistic. He still hasn't caught one ball cleanly on a play at the plate (not like it matters with the pathetic arms we have in the outfield). I love AJP, and I think his attitude was possibly the most responsible thing for our 2005 season. However, he struggled last year, and his game-calling wasn't very good. -

QUOTE(scenario @ Mar 31, 2007 -> 04:24 PM) VMart is probably the worst defensive catcher in the American League. Why would you take him over AJ? Power?? In the last two years, Martinez has hit 36 home runs. AJ has hit 34. The difference in their offensive stats is mostly based on two factors: Martinez walks more He bats higher in the lineup I'd take AJ for his defense and ability to handle the staff. Also, VMart is a switch hitter, so he's more effective vs LHP than AJP is. AJP didn't exactly have a stellar year catching last year, and if I recall correctly, the Indians starting staff had a superior ERA to that of the White Sox. And as for throwing out runners, with the way our pitchers hold on runners, it doesn't matter how good or bad the throwing arm is behind the plate. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Mar 31, 2007 -> 04:28 PM) I agree with you on all by Martinez and Barfield. We just couldn't have Victor as our catcher. He's absolutely awful. And I'd take Iguchi for this year, though Barfield may be better in time. Hafner for sure over Thome, though. I bet a lot of people wouldn't want to say that. I'd take Hafner over any player besides Pujols. See my reasons for taking VMart above. -

C.C., Sowers, Hafner, Sizemore, Dellucci, VMart, and possibly Barfield (I think he's going to thrive away from San Diego). -
QUOTE(jphat007 @ Mar 31, 2007 -> 12:32 AM) That sucks. Will you have access at work? Only radio. I'll plan my lunch to go to a restaurant with TV around 1. Saw a little of Buehrle. His velocity was good, but his changeup seemed above the belt on every attempt.

I can't take off work on Monday. Too much vacation time having to be used for the wedding/honeymoon.

QUOTE(thedoctor @ Mar 30, 2007 -> 09:55 PM) you did. my agreement was that sampson should not be pilloried the way he has been. i think he did what most (all?) coaches would do if presented with a similar scenario. although i think he should have called weber, it's a small point. the gordon's do deserve some blame in the situation, but that does not absolve bruce of missing out on another high-profile recruit. Yes, I don't believe Sampson deserves any criticism for this situation. Things were in motion for Gordon to go to Indiana well before he declared to go there. All you have to do is read comments from Rose this week about how Gordon was trying to convince him to play at IU with him while on the same AAU team over the summer.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Mar 30, 2007 -> 03:03 AM) I am pretty safe then, If I stay low and away Walker wont touch me. Well said....I was worried about a joke about him trying to pull everything, but that might be taken the wrong way.

QUOTE(jphat007 @ Mar 30, 2007 -> 02:59 AM) I got good news. Pods can't come so I get to take his Lisa! Score. Are you sure you don't want to bring your buddies Cotts and Anderson?

QUOTE(jphat007 @ Mar 30, 2007 -> 02:54 AM) I think mine got lost. Stupid postal service. I invited the following people with their date: Jphat and Scott Podsednik SSI and Greg Walker Flash and Liriano Santo/Dorf and Zambrano Rangercal and Frank Thomas Jimbo and Julian Wright QUOTE(jphat007 @ Mar 30, 2007 -> 02:57 AM) Haha. Funny that you mention that. I was actually on a cruise when we signed El Duque in 05, and had to log on pretty much every day to get updates on AJ and Iguchi possibly coming. It's expensive though. Technology my friend. 40 dollars total for the seven days to have wireless internet in the room. Mrs. Fathom will be hanging out on the beach, and I'll be b****ing about Ozzie.

QUOTE(jphat007 @ Mar 30, 2007 -> 02:53 AM) You're getting married? That poor girl. Does she know what shes getting into? The worst thing about the lack of a post season last year was having to deal with more wedding planning. Cost me a month of saying "I'm watching the game, go do it yourself". Don't worry though, we're going on a cruise for our honeymoon, and it has internet in the rooms. I'll only miss the game on the wedding night.
-
QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Mar 30, 2007 -> 01:44 AM) Do you really want the Sox to flip Buehrle for another Gavin Floyd and ex-Sox prospect? No....it's so I won't have to worry about watching the game during my wedding.
-
Is it true that the Sox over/under is 89 in Vegas? Wow....pretty tempting to take the under.
