QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 16, 2009 -> 11:33 AM) Actually, it might. No, not really, if anything he'll just hurt himself.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 10:39 PM) I have two thoughts. How many pounds is Contreras able to lose? Hasn't he lost a bunch of weight the last few offseasons? And there will be no competition for CF. Brian Anderson will not receive the starting job. Jerry Owens will receive the starting job. That might as well be etched in stone and laminated. Oh, I know. But why even name your starting centerfielder under the guise of some lame-ass fictional "competition"? Having Owens "fight it out" in March isn't going to make him any better of a player in April.

QUOTE (jphat007 @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 10:08 PM) Where are my pix! Stupid AP/Getty/Reuters. This will have to sustain us for the time being.

QUOTE (3E8 @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 10:27 PM) i.e. the everyone's lost weight and is in the best shape of their life thread I read somewhere that Adam Russell dropped 20 pounds while adding 15 pounds of muscle and is subsequently in the best shape of his life thanks to a new offseason training regiment that he and a couple other professional athletes have been participating in all offseason in a warm weather city, he also took up yoga, pilattes, tae kwon do and balet but that was only after he had laser eye surgery. Oh and he's working on a cutter!

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 08:43 PM) Well it's Tony Scott so it might be decent. Otherwise the trailer looked like a million other hostage movies. Can't wait to watch it on FX/TNT in 2011.

Post 'em. Merkin: http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/news/artic...sp&c_id=cws So Merkin mentions an "open competition" in CF, I assume this is his own speculation. Though spring training competitions may be f***ing retarded I hope if they do hold one for CF they actually stand by it unlike that sham they held in 2007.

Here's what I don't understand from KW's perspective
Kalapse replied to Greg Hibbard's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 04:56 PM) The only thing I was saying is that this team does not make that big deadline move. I saw a few people already talking about "having money for the deadline" to add that last piece we'll inevitably need (starter, most likely). I was just trying to stop that needless banter before it even started. Once the deadline approaches, we'll see more and more threads tying us to this guy and that guy, and we'll end up getting a former star in his twilight. I wasn't making a comment on whether or not these moves are necessary or correct, just that we don't make them. Also, when has Kenny had either A.) the financial flexibility to make such a deal, something he might have this season or B.) the young talent in the minors to make such a move, something he definitely has now. The last time was probably 2004 when he had a couple million dollars and Jeremy Reed at his disposal and he went ahead and made that BIG move. The problem has been expending all of his limited minor league/financial resources in the offseason then having nothing to offer come the deadline with this past season being a prime example of this. -

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 04:44 PM) I definitely won't count Griffey, as he was mediocre when we got him, and he added little. I also don't think MacDougal was an impact player when we picked him up, but we just happened to strike gold for half of a season. And winning the World Series has nothing to do with my point, as I was talking about making moves for players at the deadline and not the results. Ok but as for the 2005 season. Shouldn't they only make trades at the break if the general manager feels it's a necessity? In 2007 they had no need to acquire an impact player because the team was awful and in 2005 there was no need for an major acquisition because the club felt it was not a necessity, a belief that later proved to be correct when they went on to win the World Series with the same team they had as of July 31st. So since 2003 when they've needed to make some sort of deal they've made one, sans 2008. -

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 04:36 PM) I'm not denying that. Ok then. Your original point was that the White Sox don't trade for impact players at the break. Considering how they've picked up at least 1 impact player in 3 out of the last 5 contending seasons (2008 depends on how you view Griffey, personally I won't make the argument that he had a great impact on last year's team) and won the World Series in one of the seasons in which they didn't, I'd say your original point was incorrect. -

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 04:29 PM) I already admitted Garcia and Everett in the very first post. I will never accept that MacDougal was more than mediocre before he had his nice half season with us. He fits the "more than mediocre" requirement for his 2005 season and talent as a pitcher. And regardless of what you thought of him before we acquired him, KW saw something in him and he turned out to be a great acquisition for the 2006 season. -

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 04:28 PM) Griffey was mediocre. Riske always has been mediocre. MacDougal was hardly more than mediocre before we got him, and then we happened to get a good half of a season out of him. MacDougal had a very good 2005 season but suffered an injury at the beginning of '06, we acquired him after he threw 4 scoreless innings for the Royals that season and he went on to be by far our best reliever down the stretch. Whether you though little of him before we acquired him or not he was still an impact player for that 2006 team, there's no denying that. -

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 04:21 PM) How about players that are just more than mediocre instead of upper echelon? Well then MacDougal (performed incredibly well for the remainder of the '06 season), Garcia and Everett (the first time around when he was having and continued to have a well above average offensive season) would all qualify. So of the last 5 seasons in which we were contenders we've picked up an impact player at the break in 3 of them and won the World Series in one of the other 2. -
Owens, Nix, Betemit and Wise Out of options

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 03:03 PM) Nix will be gone, but Wise is the only guy last year who had good PH stats i believe. I think he stays on. Wise: 12 AB, HR, 4 K, SF, .417/.385/.667/1.051 Anderson: 12 AB, HR, 3 K, BB, .333/.385/.667/1.051 -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 02:57 PM) Didn't Nix get signed on a minor league deal, such that it doesn't matter that he's out of options? He's on the 40 man roster so if the Sox want to send him down at any time this year (including March) they'd have to use an option, since he's out of options he'd have to pass through waivers which he's done twice in his career already. -
QUOTE (rangercal @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 01:23 AM) JD will be traded by the break Then you're talking $13M, maybe less.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 01:01 PM) I knew someone would list off the garbage. I should have mentioned we haven't made a significant move for an upper echelon player since Garcia, and who knows before that. I guess a case can be made for Everett the first time. And how many "upper echelon" players are dealt every July? Normally the trade deadline is used to add complimentary pieces to fill a few holes for the stretch run, only a few star players have even been dealt at the deadline since KW took over -
QUOTE (rangercal @ Feb 14, 2009 -> 07:46 PM) I predict we cut over 20 mil in payroll and not sign Bobby Abreu for 5 mil. Oh wait... If by $20M you mean $8M then you might just be on to something.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 12, 2009 -> 01:21 PM) So that is about a 10% decline, which isn't too far off of what the Sox have cut off of their payroll from last year to this, once extra costs such as the spring training buyout are included. They've cut the payroll by approximately 6%. -

Vazquez - $11.5M Hall - $1.75M Cabrera - $7.5M Crede - $5.1M Uribe - $4.5M Swisher - $3.5M -------- $33.85M Betemit + $1.3M Colon + $1M Dotel + $1M Dye + $2M Jenks + $5.01M Linebrink + $500K MacDougal + $700K Pierzynski + $400K Ramirez + $150K Thome + $6.33M Thornton + $450K Viciedo + $5M Buyouts + $2.35M -------- $26.19M $33.85M - $26.19M = $7.66M Is a $7.66M reduction in payroll acceptable considering the current state of the economy, the lost sponsors, a probable drop in attendance, the spring training buyout and the possibility that KW might have a little cash to work with around the trade deadline (something he's said he would like to do from now on)? -
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Feb 12, 2009 -> 02:26 AM) Difference between saying a player is bad and was bad. He is such a liability healthwise right now that the Sox are better off moving forward with cheaper, potentially better alternatives. I dont think anybody would truly discredit Crede as a Sox player contributing to the Championship team, but its a "what have you done fore me lately" game. And hes been injured for the past 3 years and has Boras as his agent. He couldve done more to stay with the Sox if he wanted to, such as get a new agent, but he didnt. Hes moving on, the Sox are moving on, and so should fans (root for him if you want, but STOP asking/praying for him to return). This is how you sustain success over a prolonged period of time. If you refuse to let players go for sentimental reasons you're going to destroy your ballclub. If certain people around here had their way Iguchi would still be at second, Pods would be leading off and Cliff Politte would be pitching the 8th inning. There are some people who still don't understand why we dumped Iguchi in 2007 because they see him as the same player he was in 2005.
-
I loved Joe Crede when he was the White Sox's thirdbaseman and playing 100+ games a season, he brought stability to the position for 5 months out of the year, provided slightly below league average offense and was one of the best defenders in the game. It's just reached the point where I'm sick of hearing and reading his name. If certain fans knew when to let a player go there would be problem. Joe Crede hasn't been a factor since 2006 and yet I have to read his name on here everyday, the man's jersey number has already been given to a rookie, it's time to move on.

QUOTE (tommy @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 11:05 PM) VORP stands for Value over replaced player? Does that mean, Owens is projected to score 27 less runs then whoever he is replacing? It's the number of runs a player contributes over some average AAAA schmo. There's no way Jerry Owens is projected to have a VORP of -27, that's just epically bad. -2.7 sounds about right however.
-
QUOTE (daa84 @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 09:58 PM) you must be missing a decimal... negative twenty seven? I've never heard of a VORP that low.....hell even wise is projected at "only" -0.5 Tony Pena had a -25 VORP last year in one of the least productive seasons in the history of baseball for a hitter with 200+ PA. -2.7 sounds about right for Owens.
