QUOTE(Heads22 @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 10:09 PM) Mud Hens Edge Knights Toledo Takes Game One of Series 2-1 FORT MILL, S.C. – August 1, 2007 – Charlotte returned home from their longest road trip of the season, falling to Toledo 2-1. The Knights were held to five hits on the night while the Mud Hens collected 10 hits. One of those hits belonged to Adam Ricks who was playing his second game of the day. Ricks was called up from Single-A Winston-Salem following a day game with Salem. Ricks started behind the plate, going 2-4, with a run and RBI. Following the game, he made the 79 mile trip down I-85 to Charlotte to enter the Knights game in the 2nd inning to pitch hit for Ryan Sweeney. Antistacio Martinez (4-5, 4.14) picked up the win for the Mud Hens going 6 innings striking out nine. Shaun Babula (3-3, 4.59) took the loss for the Knights. The three game series continues Thursday at 7:15. Seriously?

QUOTE(daa84 @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 09:18 PM) well we are at 102 now, so assuming we are there at 102 next year we have 10 mil to spend on those players....and given the fact that our payroll has gone up every single year as baseball teams continue to prosper (thanks bud selig) i wouldnt be shocked if we go up to 110. i certainly could be wrong, but i for one would def. want tejada .300 + average with 25 HR at least just about every year...he'll be 32 next year, so if it means giving tejada 13 for 2 years or signing dye to a 2 or 3 year deal i think id rather have the younger SS The payroll has gone up each year along with the increase in attendance which has taken a hit this season, I doubt we see anything close to a $8M-$10M increase in payroll next year, that just doesn't seem to make sense going by the history. Another note: Tejada will NEVER play for the White Sox.

White Sox vs. Yankees, 8/01/07 (L)
Kalapse replied to The Ginger Kid's topic in 2007 Season in Review
7 hits allowed by Yankee pitching today, 6 came from left handed hitters. It's a shame Ozzie "makes the f***ing lineup" today could have been a good day for Richar to face his first major league lefty starter. -
Seriously, f*** Darin Erstad. That was probably the most easily predictable failure of KW's tenure, he should seriously just retire. Do you suppose the Angles' 1B coaching job could open up for Darin this offseason?

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 08:31 PM) I'll take Rivera. I don't care about the price. Don't you suppose he'll be looking for a closing gig?

QUOTE(BaseballNick @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 08:23 PM) I agree, but my point was that the money saved could possibly go to acquiring a better reliever...maybe monetary difference would be so insignificant that it wouldn't make any difference. I'm sure that KW/JR wouldn't mind spending a little extra to acquire the player Kenny was targeting over the next best option. RELIEF PITCHERS: 1.) Scott Linebrink 31 2.) Joe Kennedy 29 3.) QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 08:21 PM) Personally, I hope he remains in Minnesota as a face of their franchise after giving some kind of discount. I'd much rather have him out of the AL Central. I'd especially like to see him with the Mets so he can face the Braves 5-6 times a year.

If the Sox acquired Tejada without moving any other players with big league contracts, that would push the guaranteed money for 2008 to about $92.125M for 11 players. That would leave approximately $2.875M ($95M payroll) to spend on the other 14 roster spots.

8 years, $200M. How does that sound?

QUOTE(michelangelosmonkey @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 08:03 PM) Their 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, RF, C and DH are over 30. Half of their pitchers are over 30. Their young core is Granderson, Verlander, Zuma and Zuma. My point is everyone is up in arms over the old Sox. Crede, Uribe, Richar, Fields, Buehrle, Garland, Jenks, Danks all under 30. Its not hopeless. The next time Crede plays baseball he'll be 30 and Uribe should be gone immediately following the conclusion of the 2007 season so those 2 don't really count.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 02:46 AM) I know how you feel about this, and while there are plenty of examples of first round busts, there is certain talent only available to those with a Top 10 pick -- Joe Mauer, Mark Texiera, BJ Upton, Prince Fielder, Delmon Young, Rickie Weeks, Nick Markakis, Justin Verlander, Ryan Zimmerman, Troy Tulowitzki, Andrew Miller, Tim Lincecum, etc. Ryan f***ing Braun as well, The super stud. Clayton Kershaw who is considered possibly the best pitching prospect still in the minors, he's already incredibly valuable even if he never makes the majors, the Dodgers could have dealt him at the break for a very reliable major league starting pitcher. Alex Gordon, Jeff Clement, Cameron Maybin. 3 players who have never accomplished anything in the majors (Gordon has been alright this year I guess) but still 3 players who after being drafted in the top 10 in 2005 have become incredibly valuable to their teams. After performing well over their first 1.5 years in professional baseball they've seen their trade value skyrocket. If you draft a player in the top 10 and he just performs well for his first year/year and a half of professional baseball you're often going to have one hell of a trading chip on your hands. That's one thing people tend to overlook, the trade value of top 10 picks. Think about what the D-Backs could get in return for Justin Upton right now, with how overvalued prospects have become.

QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 08:59 PM) Just about every player on every team gets put through some sort of waivers. Revocable or Irrevocable...and I'm not sure either...I think you are right about the window. This is true, every player on the White Sox's 40 man roster will be placed on waivers, if they pass through unclaimed the White Sox attempt to trade them to any team in baseball through the end of August. If the player is claimed the Sox can do one of 3 things 1.) relinquish the rights to that player giving him to the team that put in the claim, 2.) pull him back off waivers making it impossible to trade him for the rest of the year or 3.) try to work out a deal with the team that claimed him, there's a window (7 days I think) in which the Sox could negotiate a trade with the team that put in the claim, only players not on the 40 man roster or others players who have been passed through waivers may be a part of the deal.
-
Andy Gonzalez will be on the bench next year and I'd say there's a 50/50 chance you see Cintron retained.

Actually Baseball Reference is often slow for me as well.

YES! The Sox's starting shortstop in 2008 just his a 3 run HR!!!

QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 07:05 PM) Unless Jose gives up a ton more runs we still have a chance against Mussina. He hasn't been so hot lately either. Well maybe hotter than Jose, but not that great, well maybe greater than Jose, but, but , but Oh who am I kidding. We are done Mussina has a 3.67 ERA over his last 8 starts.

This is just embarrassing.

QUOTE(AirScott @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 05:07 PM) And this Jon Link fellow has been pretty good in High-A ball. As a 23 year old.

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 03:44 PM) I hope they trade them for nothing. Thats honestly what I feel they should do, just scrap Erstad and Pods. But my guess is no one wants them even for free. They don't have to be traded, a simple release would do nicely. They are completely useless to this ballclub and do nothing but take up space.
-
QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 03:42 PM) Kalapse, I dont know I hope the Sox realize its better to put anyone out there under the age of 30 and just see what happens. The year is a lost cause. I hope that Erstad/Pods gets traded in another one of these we get nothing in return trades. Im just sick of seeing the same players go out there every day and not get the job done. This trade deadline was not going to make or break the Sox, and in fact Im glad none of our major players were traded *outside of Dye* because my guess is that Garland or Vaz would have been a package that would make most people throw up. I guess I just dont see what value Mack has on the bench. It seems negative to me, so thus addition by subtraction. The only player left under the age of 30 to recall is Sweeney and he's still blocked. I personally would have retained Mackowiak for next season, he's putting up a .350 OBP, .775 OPS and can play 4-5 positions well. Trading Mackowiak but retaining Gimpy and Grindy beyond July 31st only weakens the future of this ballclub.
-
There's still 2 roster spots being occupied by s***ty, old, injury prone players. The "kids" won't be called up until they're gone, which I doubt will be anytime soon. Mackowiak's departure clears the way for no one but Erstad.
-
QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 03:33 PM) No hes getting rid of old players so that new younger playsers can be auditioned. Thats called rebuilding. Would you rather have Mack and Iguchi play all year, or have younger guys who may be here in the future? If he could have traded Erstad and Pods for any value Im sure theyd be gone too. Mack had no place in the future of the organization, with the reality that rebuilding may take atleast next year. And if some how the Sox can be a contender next year, Mack was certainly not going to be a major piece of the puzzle. I see no loss in value for the Sox, so I dont see what the problem is. Who are these "young players" that will be taking Mackowiak's playing time? Erstad is about to be recalled and take the vacant roster spot.
-
QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 03:34 PM) ...Who had fallen WAAAAAAY out of favor with the White Sox. Meh, so, he's 23 and in A ball...so what? This clears the way to see what the youngsters can do. Ryan Sweeney...come on down! You probably won't see Ryan Sweeney until September.
-
QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 03:34 PM) We are stocking our minor league teams. But, only two class A players in return? Oh well! How much playing time would Mack get anyway this season with us starting a bunch of starving rookies? I would have to believe Sweeney gets called up to replace Mack, but we will wait and see obviously. It looks like Erstad will be taking his roster spot.
