Buehrle: Sox aren't going into rebuilding mode
Kalapse replied to thedoctor's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(max power @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 11:30 AM) I think it will become easier in the off season when some team that didn't compete this year, wants to next year, and sees jose possibly turning it around. There will be more teams looking for pitchers then, and some will miss out in free agency, you can't deny that. Jose is likely 36-38 years old and has pretty much been the worst pitcher in baseball over the past 380 days or so. There's no way some team is going to eat the $20M remaining on his deal based on a slim hope that he may magically turn it around when there's just nothing there that makes you think he's capable of pulling it off. -

QUOTE(max power @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 11:26 AM) They will probably dump jose, and use that 10 million toward the bigger contract and about 15 million more to patch some crap up. Resign uribe (5 million), arb for crede(another 5 million), richar at 2b, Fields in left, someone else new in the outfield, and about 8 more million in bullpen help. Its not unrealistic for a team that is top five in attendance in the AL. I didn't say it was going to work, not sure if that team will win the central, but I am sure Kenny will be trying to compete. If it was that easy to just "dump" Contreras it would have been done by now. -

QUOTE(michelangelosmonkey @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 11:22 AM) Why no love for BA? Career .409 OBP. Some power and speed. OK, he's 33, but he's kinda like Rickey Henderson or Tim Raines (in an era without stolen bases). And both of those guys played well late into their 30's. He really seems more what the Sox need than Andrew Jones or Adam Dunn...and less risky than Rowand. He'll be 34 years old, has lost almost all of his power for whatever reason, is a below average defender and will likely be looking for the last big contract of his career. Where exactly is he going to play anyway? -
QUOTE(beck72 @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 11:10 AM) Wilson's numbers are better for avg and OBP. And has hit from the #2 hole, which shows he can handle the bat better than Uribe. If the sox add a decent prospect, they can get the Pirates to add salary. With the sox options at SS limited in both leagues, and their need for an above avg defender, they might need to do a deal like this. By no means should the sox shouldn't overpay for Wilson. Uribe isn't a horrible option if they can improve elsewhere. But IMO, Wilson would be an upgrade over Uribe. I'll take John McDonald at $750K-$1M over Jack Wilson at $8-$14M and a decent prospect.
-
QUOTE(beck72 @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 11:03 AM) You must get all the Pirate games then. By all accounts, he's one on the best defensive NL SS's, and scouts said that he was on par with Cesar Izturis defensively. That doesn't seem like a drop off from Uribe. Go read any Pirates board or blog I guarantee you'll read the same thing from the people who watch him everyday. And Cesar Izturis is no longer an upper echelon defender, his arm has turned to mush post 2005 surgery and he's prone to insanely stupid mistakes like a couple of the games this and last year when he committed 2-3 errors in a matter of a few innings.
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 10:52 AM) Defensively, Wilson may be a little bit better than Uribe. Offensively, Wilson may be a little bit worse than Uribe. And Wilson has both a longer contract and one more expensive. Jack Wilson is possibly the most inconsistent defender in the game. He spends about 35%-40% of the season being pretty mediocre in the field, another 35%-40% playing above average defense and the other 20%-30% being pretty average. He's possibly the worst player in the game when you take into account his fickle defense, terrible offense and the fact that he's guaranteed $14.3M over the next 2 years.
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 10:45 PM) Joe Crede will not bring this team anything in a trade until May at the earliest. Absolutely nothing. And even then I doubt the Sox will get anything exciting in exchange for Joe.

Sox Mailbag has some interesting tidbits

QUOTE(gosox41 @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 10:06 PM) No kidding. The guy has posted 2 great years in his career, 2004 and 2007. 2007 is a contrtact year, but didn't he sign a deal after 2004? Anyway, the other 4-5 years he's been statisticaly average to below average offensively. Bob Ok and how many sane Sox fans are actually pining for the return of Aaron Rowand at $10M+ a year? Yeah pretty much none. Thinking of him as a realistic option to fill the CF spot on the 2008 team and praying that he returns are 2 totaly different things. -

QUOTE(greg775 @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 09:43 PM) Love what he's done in baseball, but he's Mike Sweeney-ish now with his back. Um bulls***. Sweeney has played in a grand total of 117 games over the last 2 seasons combined and hasn't gone a full season without missing at least 1 entire month since 2001, he's pretty much knocking on the door of forced retirement at this point. Thome played in 143 games last year and 85 out of 111 this year while putting up a .951 OPS. For you to say Jim Thome's injury problems have reached the level of Mike Sweeney's is a complete joke. -
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 08:58 PM) Anyone know how deep the SP's available in Free Agency this off-season is? If it isn't, some team with a hole in their rotation, may just decide to take a chance on Jose, stranger things have happened before. Some team in the NL in a good pitching envrionment may possibly think he could rebound. This class is loaded . . . STARTING PITCHERS: 1.) Carlos Zambrano 27 2.) Mark Buehrle 29 - SIGNED w/ WHITE SOX on 7/8/07 [4 yrs, $56M] ---------- 3.) Jason Jennings 29 4.) Paul Byrd 37 '08 TO worth $8M or $250K BO 5.) Rodrigo Lopez 32 6.) Randy Wolf 31 '08 TO worth $9M or $500K BO 7.) Carlos Silva 29 8.) Livan Hernandez 33 9.) Freddy Garcia 32 10.) Bartolo Colon 35 11.) Tom Glavine 42 (could possibly retire) 12.) Andy Pettitte 36 '08 PO worth $16M 13.) Curt Shilling 41 (will likely retire) 14.) Roger Clemens 45 (will hopefully retire 15.) Kenny Rogers 43 16.) Odalis Perez 31 17.) Jeff Weaver 31 18.) Matt Clement 33 19.) Steve Trachsel 37 '08 TO worth $4.75M or $100K BO 20.) Kip Wells 31 OTHERS: Fogg, Benson, Lohse, Elarton, R. Ortiz, D. Wells, Milton . . . with s***.

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 08:48 PM) Just finished watching Idiocracy. The movie was decent but I must admit I've never seen the role of President of the U.S. played like this before. Quite hilarious. I can't stand Luke Wilson, hate Dax Sheppard and I find Maya Rudolph annoying and yet I actually enjoyed Idiocracy. Terry Crews as President Camacho saves the movie from mediocrity. His speech in front of congress is quite humorous. I mean come on, what's not to love?

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 05:34 PM) That's not a position. This team need legitimate talent. Especially in the OF. Until they stop equating speed with talent and the top of the lineup, this team will be among the worst in the American League offensively. If he can find a talented leadoff hitter at SS then SS is the main concern, if he can find an outfielder who's a legitimate leadoff threat then OF is the main concern.

I could live with a Fields - Rowand - Dye OF in '08. Though I'm not convinced the Sox could afford it. -

QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 04:49 PM) Booras should not be the problem people seem to think he is as far as resigning a player. Crede already made that plain. Joe Crede is not the first player to go down injured and he won't be the last. He most certainly can come back healthy and ready to contribute. He is a very good option next year and beyond at 3B. Josh Fields can make it as a LF'er and our team will be better for it. It seems as if some folks would cut their noses off to spite their face when it comes to Sox talent. YOU DO NOT KNOW THIS. You need to stop stating this s*** as fact because at this point in time NO ONE knows what the future holds for Joe Crede, he may never be able to play the field again for all we know. -
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 12:28 PM) If he accepts, so what? He'll still be very cheap and on a 1 year contract at the most. Outside of a deceptively low ERA Bukvich's stats are terrible for the season. 22.3 IP, 23 H, 4 HR, 12 BB, 10 K and a 1.57 WHIP. So he's been bad this year and didn't even pitch in the majors last year, he won't even bring you Type B compensation. And besides, it's far too early to be talking about this if he's horrendous for the final 2 months of the season this whole thing is moot.
-
QUOTE(daa84 @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 02:52 PM) funny because the only difference between taht lineup and the 4th place lineup the sox have right now is pods and sweeney, which is close to a wash, and tejada >>>>>> uribe.....so im not seeing how we go from 4th to 5th by making those moves If Tejada and Dye are both on this team next year then 2 starting pitchers will have to be traded. That's where you could see a huge decline.
-
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 01:21 PM) Well above average? That means he is better than 15 or 20 current starting third basemen in the MLB. No way he is anything like that level. He might be eventually, but right now he is lucky to be better than 5 or 8 of them. That's probably why he used the word "potentially."
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 01:04 PM) Yes, I looked at every game. Apparently Crede never made any bad decisions in the field? I seem to remember a deja vu moment against the Red Sox where he dropped an easy pop up just like Josh did yesterday. If you take Crede's first few months as a starting 3B and Josh's I think you would see a very fair comparison and to me since Josh is so athletic I feel that he will keep improving every day. I was at that game, Manny hit a game winning HR off Vizcaino on the very next pitch. The second Joe dropped that ball everyone in the stadium knew what was coming next. That sucked.
-
QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 08:02 PM) I get all the waivers rules and everything except for one thing, what prevents a team(we'll say in this case a weaker team) from just claiming every single player on waivers to prevent any trades working out? 1.) That GM is going to have a hell of a time working out a deal with any other GM after doing something like that, he'd piss off an awful lot of people. 2.) If say, the D-Rays claimed every player put on waivers, Jose Contreras would be on a flight to Tampa right now and the Rays would be just a wee bit f***ed financially.
-
QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 07:52 PM) I still need to see Hot Fuzz. I almost bought it the other day as I know I'm going to love it. Buy it. It's well worth the money, it's easily one of the best comedies I've ever seen.
-
QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 07:55 PM) Why would Detroit want him, over Carlos Guillen? Carlos Guillen is, in all likelihood, headed to 1B after this season. He is a terrible shortstop.
-
QUOTE(Linnwood @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 07:14 PM) Maybe I am not understanding this, but why place him on waivers if they don't want to trade him? Every player is put on waivers for one of a few reasons: 1.) greater trade flexibility for the month of August, anyone who goes unclaimed can be dealt, those who are claimed can be pulled back, there's no reason NOT to put a player on waivers 2.) in an attempt to unload a s*** contract 3.) in an attempt to sneak another name through waivers unclaimed.
-
QUOTE(Jim Spencer @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 07:34 PM) He'd be a big Up-Grade from what we now have at Shortstop, at least on offense. .287 career hitter who averages about 28 homers a season. The biggest draw back is the over $13m he makes a year. The huge salary and the young talent it would take to acquire him I doubt the Orioles would want any Sox player that cleared waivers, they'd be setting their sights on the only young talent that remains in the Sox's minor league system. Trading youth for 31+ year old, slow, expensive poor defensive players is not going to get this organization back to where it needs to be. Besides, I doubt the Sox tried very hard to acquire him.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 06:01 PM) So, Kalapse and I are the only two who didn't think the Simpsons movie was hilarious? I thought it was "meh" at best. The most surprising thing about the movie was the way the crowd took to the jokes. I just can't believe some of the things people will laugh at, I suppose the Simpsons name can make anything funny. On an unrelated note I picked up Hot Fuzz this morning. God damn is that a terrific movie and even better seeing it for the second time. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are awesome as usual and Timothy Daulton is hilarious as the slasher (of prices of course.)
