QUOTE(VAfan @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 09:18 AM) I just don't think Aubrey Huff is a difference maker as an offensive player. He's a nice solid ballplayer who started the season worse than Juan Uribe, but he's turned it around in July. Would I take him over Carl Everett next year as a DH and platoon guy? Yes, because he's signed for another year. Do I think he's a better hitter than Jermaine Dye or Paul Konerko? He was in 2002. But his decline early this year gives one pause. My point is that I believe Brandon McCarthy will definitely be a difference maker, and I'm not willing to trade a guy we might have for a year and 2 months for a pitcher who might become a key member of our rotation for 5-6 years. If McCarthy is even 80% as good as Jack McDowell, that would be a lot of wins before he became a free agent. I'm willing to consider trading McCarthy for another cornerstone player who is in his early 20s that is just as good. But I hope he's not traded for someone, like Aubrey Huff or Danys Baez who would only be on our team for a blip in time and in 5 years you would have forgotten that they ever played for the Sox. (Again, I'd be happy to add Huff; I just wouldn't trade McCarthy to get him. "Blown Save" Baez I'd rather pass on regardless of price.) As for Guardado, I think he'd be a great addition. Indeed, I think he could add more value to our playoff roster than many of the names being bandied about. But it won't take Brandon McCarthy to get him. You totally underrated Aubrey Huff.

The Sox WILL make a move.

Per Ben Maller: In an effort to land a right-handed power bat for their stretch drive, the Indians checked in with the Brewers about Carlos Lee. But Milwaukee said no dice, and believes it has a shot to sign Lee to a contract extension.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 02:19 AM) Ok, here's a question, what the hell would the hold up for a Geoff Blum for 1 minor leaguer be? Wether they wanna give the Padres Baj or Borchard.

I'm beginning to think this is BS. Seeing how it seems as if only one person has heard this.

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 01:57 AM) Willie and whoever for Blum would do it for me. Willie makes sense for San Diego. I can't remember how long Loretta is out(or if he even is out anymore), but their interest for Boone tells me all I really need to know. Loretta is back already.

Well atleast he has a nice OBP. .244 BA, .323 OBP. I'll give him that.

QUOTE(sox-r-us @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 01:40 AM) Where did the rumor come from? And why is it a rumor if the trade has taken place? Link please? It's on 4 different message boards that they reported it on a San Diego radio station.

This makes NO sense.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 01:32 AM) BTW, there's a rumor going around we just traded for G. Blum. Not sure if it's true. From the Padres? meh I hope not. http://www.fanstop.com/public/mlbboards/pa....cgi?read=92992

per rotoworld: Miguel Olivo - C - SD Padres acquired catcher Miguel Olivo from the Mariners for catcher Miguel Ojeda and RHP Nate Mateo. It's worth a try. The Mariners thought they had a long-term starter in Olivo when they got him in the Freddy Garcia trade, but he disappointed both offensively and defensively. The Padres will keep in the majors and let him split time with David Ross, apparently taking Robert Fick out of the mix for starts at catcher. If they don't re-sign Ramon Hernandez in the offseason, Olivo would become a candidate to start in 2006. He shouldn't have much in the way of short-term fantasy value. Jul. 31 - 2:20 am et

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 01:13 AM) Where'd this come from??? It's been reported at nausium for the past 24 hours that both the Sox and Cubs are hot for Huff.

per rotoworld: Miguel Ojeda - C - SEA Mariners acquired catcher Miguel Ojeda and RHP Nate Mateo from the Padres for catcher Miguel Olivo. Because the Yorvit Torrealba pickup didn't make it obvious enough that they were giving up on Miguel Olivo, the Mariners made it offical. Ojeda might be assigned to Triple-A Tacoma for now, but the plan is probably for him to be Torrealba's backup through at least 2006. The 30-year-old was a disappointment for the Padres this season after decent showings as a reserve in 2003 and '04. As someone who will start 40 games or so, he should be OK. Mateo, 24, had a 3.08 ERA in 48 relief appearances for Double-A Mobile. He has the fastball to be sort of useful as a 12th pitcher. Jul. 31 - 2:17 am et

I personally like this thread. Atleast it has nothing to do with trade rumors.

QUOTE(BobDylan @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 12:46 AM) Call me crazy, but I have a gut feeling the Sox are going to make a huge run for Manny if not land him. You're f***ing crazy.

QUOTE(Tadahito Iguchi @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 12:19 AM) I'm agreein, but he cudnt hurt them as a backup for Juan And Gooch............... Yes, yes he could. He is bad.
-
QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 12:18 AM) Definitely not. He is a quality arm with goof stuff but to overpay for him would be bad. Baez and Huff for MBac, Sweeney, and Tracy??? Yes, No? Hell yeah I'd make that trade. But the DRays wouldn't.

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 12:15 AM) NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DON'T I DON'T WANT GRIFFEY BEING A SAWK To late. I just emailed em. Look for the deal to be completed by noon tomorrow.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 12:14 AM) With Huff and Lugo I have the same feelings as you. I actually like Baez but the asking price is so ridiculous it's just not worth it. Huff's a guy I would be willing to overpay for, Baez--definitely not. Yeah, I'd love beaz in our pen don't get me wrong. I just don't think he's worth a Chris Young or Ryan Sweeney.
