New rule idea: Vertical safe zone
southsideirish71 replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Oct 13, 2017 -> 12:51 PM) Yeah, but part of Cameron's point is that these rules aren't becoming as "basic" anymore, now that we have super slo mo cameras to see details that were never seen before. As he points out, for 100+ years, Lobotan would have been called safe. It's only NOW that we have super detailed camera work that he is ruled out. Cameron is arguing giving the vertical safe zone would actually create results more in line with what we have always seen in the past. Because if you are talking about most BASIC of all, it's almost always been if the runner gets to the bag first, he's safe. Umpires never followed through with the minute details like they have to do via replay. These are calls that were never called before. So if you're a purist, vertical safe zones actually just take away super slo-mo replays changing ridiculously technical plays like that, and return calls to how they were always called. If you are a purist then get rid of the replays and just deal with the human element. That works until a jumbotron HD replay at 80 feet tall shows that X play happened. The point of the replay system is to get things right. So if the human official makes a mistake and technology helps to correct that then technology helps. We cant alter the rules just because technology overrules the human and it adds complexity. Its a slippery slope when you introduce technology and review to any sport. How does one enforce a vertical safe zone. How does an ump who is several feet away determine an invisible barrier above an object. We are talking about a person and their appendages not a football as well. This is not breaking a linear plane. This is an invisible safe zone above a base. -
New rule idea: Vertical safe zone
southsideirish71 replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This nonsense of basic rules dont apply because it hurts my sensibilities is nuts. I am sure National fans are upset about the dropped 3rd strike rule at this moment as well. Here is a solution. Block or catch the ball. No, no vertical safe zone. Its simple. Stay on the bag. He wasn't pushed off the bag or prevented entry. He slid and popped up. Its no different than someone switching their feet and losing contact with the base and getting tagged. Keep a body part connected with the bag at all times and you are good. Lobaton took an aggressive secondary and paid the price for it. -
Its real simple. Catch the ball. Watching catchers who cant block. Watching people throw the ball around. The trailing runner get picked. This is a fundamentally dumb team. It was unwatchable at times. A mediocre defensive team wins this game. Between this and watching the Indians game last night. People need more defensive work.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 12, 2017 -> 09:26 PM) Ron Darling is quite literally the worst MLB commentator I've ever heard. I'm not even sure it's close. Smoltz is a close second.

QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 12, 2017 -> 08:18 PM) Could have been a dp He might of been able to take out the runner at 2nd but he wouldn't of turned the dp. He made the safe play. If Wieters can block and Gio can stop throwing WPs getting outs is more than enough here.

Sample size is amazing. This is one start. His slider was flat, his velocity was still good and he was missing his spots a bit. Thats the difference in missing bats and looking like Cy Young. Lets give him a few starts before we declare him to be a bust in the playoffs.

Stupid things that can be immediately outlawed. Its not like that hunters need to attack the forest like its Zero Dark Thirty and Bin Laden is upstairs. Tracer rounds -Unless Bambi is in a rainy forest at night with 10k of his friends in a fortress there is zero reason to use tracer rounds to help your aim. Armor Piercing Rounds -Unless Bambi is wearing Kevlar. There is no reason. Bump devices -Unless you are worried about rate of fire with Bambi and his 10k forest friends there is no reason. Silencers -I know at times its necessary to assault Bambi's house and have the tactical advantage but come on. What next you and 5 of your friends flash bang the animal from the blind with your throat mikes on yelling tango down. Before the NRA asks No rocket launchers, grenades, mines, tanks, air support ( wait for it I am sure that we will have a hunting drone soon if not already ), chemical or tactical nukes to take out Bambi and his elite deer fighting force. At some point hunting is not a video game. There has to be some level of hunting actually involved. Its not just hey this reminds me of COD where I can just pull the trigger forever and if I hit something so be it. Most hunters are not asking for Zero Dark Thirty crap. Its the noobs who are using these weapons for some sort of testosterone trip or they have mental issues and think the government is coming to get them. Either way they dont count. So lets not worry about their feelings. If an intruder in my house cannot be stopped by a shotgun or a handgun then they are a cyborg, alien or deity. Me pulling a long gun to shoot the intruder 20 feet away down my upstairs hallway is great. Until I fire off a round and it goes through the wall, and into my neighbors house and kills someone there. Maybe people who want these weapons should pass a physics test. Bullets go through things. These high velocity high mass bullets go a long way, they go through everything it seems and dont stop once they miss your intended target. So no they are not good for home defense. You dont need to outlaw all guns. But my god some common sense things can be passed.
-
I am a gun owner. With that being said there has to be limits. First of all if you want to own a gun you should go through a rigorous background check. You should also be required to go through a gun safety class. I don't see why anyone needs an assault rifle. I find it interesting that hunters need things like silencers for hunting. You don't need an AR15 with an large scope, laser site and a silencer to kill a deer. Not everything is a video game. The next part of this is people caught with assault rifles in the commission of a crime should automatically get a multiplier on their sentence. One thing we fail at is the proper enforcement of gun laws.

Can Rodon become a quality mlb starter?
southsideirish71 replied to Dominikk85's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (ptatc @ Sep 25, 2017 -> 07:25 AM) No doubt. This is starting to look like a Mark Prior issue. Lots of problems, no answers and insisting his mechanics are good. although, I had issues with Priors taining and mechanics. The only issue I have with Rodon is still his lack of follow through. He seems very upright in his last movements. He also looks like he throws across his body and his arm almost rebounds back during his recovery phase. His motion is not typical of someone who can generate the type of velocity he can. People have all sorts of odd mechanics. But it always amazed me on his stuff with the way his mechanics look. Hopefully everything is fine. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 21, 2017 -> 10:08 PM) Can you guys believe a fan (me) doesn't even know our draft position at all? I have no idea where we currently rank or where we will pick in draft. Don't care one iota. Can u imagine how different we are on the spectrum? I would rather win tonight than get the No. 1 pick over the No. 2 or 3. Don't care bout that. You have stated this nonsense for years. At least you are consistent.

Are we allowed to get nervous about Moncada at this point?
southsideirish71 replied to ron883's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I agree. Watching someone who has been through it and is a contemporary makes sense. This was a hire I wish we made in the offseason Ron Washington for an infield instructor. Maybe this is currently happening with the sox. But hiring one of the best fielding guru's and just attaching him to the next generation of infield talent can't hurt. Imagine Moncada and Anderson just working with Wash for the better part of a year. -

southsideirish71 replied to ron883's topic in Pale Hose Talk
The Abreu impact on the young new players like Moncada cannot be understated. He is one of the players I wouldn't trade at this point. I think his value to mentoring young players is more valuable than any possible return he could provide at this point. -
Lopez, Fulmer and Holmberg to Chicago
southsideirish71 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 1, 2017 -> 03:32 PM) Fulmer is probably the best example in recent years of the damage you can do by pushing a pitcher too fast. I would say its pushing him too fast and attempting to completely revamp his mechanics. He was successful in college based on what he was doing. Changing his mechanics and moving him aggressively is probably not a good thing. He has the talent. Its getting him back to what made him successful in the first place. -
QUOTE (harkness @ Jul 28, 2017 -> 10:35 PM) Timmy needs to be sent down. No, he needs to take his lumps and get better. This is a rebuild. Its not like we have some other SS prospect pushing Timmy out. Let him learn at the major league level and get better.

QUOTE (Tony @ Jul 24, 2017 -> 04:33 PM) Not a banner day for our 2B-SS combo of the future. We need to hire or appoint a fielding specialist that should be tagged with that tandem working on things. Like Ron Washingtons role with the A's. -

Put up a Kevin Millar player comp. #WhiteSox #MLBDraft Yup took a look at his hitting videos. He arm bars as part of his negative move. He will have to change that to get to inside pitching. or have the timing of a god. -
DRAFT TRACKER 2017, and Day One Discussion
southsideirish71 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (Knackattack @ Jun 12, 2017 -> 07:25 PM) They mentioned the "arm bar" on mlb network.. comped his swing to Frazier which was pretty elite in the league for awhile IJS. Solid pick with a higher floor as a big HR/walk guy Usually this is an issue with younger players when they initiate their negative move. With a younger player ( HS and younger ) I would worry about the arm bar with rolling over on pitches. With a stronger guy it might not be as much of an issue. They might change that part of his mechanics before he gets too deep in the system. -
QUOTE (pablo @ May 1, 2017 -> 02:09 PM) My original point was it is very special to watch Tim go after very difficult pop ups and short fly balls in no man's land and make some unbelievable catches. This made me think (a thought I have always had as well as some others around here) that I'm sure Anderson would be a great CF as well. My next point was how since the Sox are in a rebuild it would be smart to trade for the best prospects available no matter the position (pitcher or hitter). If Bregman, Rosario, Albies (name some other great SS prospect) are/were ever on the table, the Sox I assume would not turn something down just because they have Tim at SS. Knowing full well that Tim can be a great SS and assuming with time he can also be a great CF (evidenced by the way he goes back on fly balls), would anyone around here be upset if we were to acquire a great SS prospect and then also have a potential great CF in Tim? I am not advocating a move to CF for Tim whatsoever unless the situation presented itself. Just about all of the good to great SS's in the majors make amazing plays on fly balls. Its a hallmark of being athletic.

And on the whole Saladino can't play OF because he hurt his arm once. In the OF you have more max effort throws however you get into better throwing positions for the most part than an IF. A SS throws from different arm angles and probably throws more throughout the season without getting behind it on every play. I would say its more stressful on ones arm doing the Jeter jump throw in the hole or laying out then flashing across their body than a throw to home. In reality if Saladino can play a super sub down the road with his defense and bat he is extremely valuable on this team.
-
QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Apr 17, 2017 -> 03:53 PM) Scouts have considered more than a few games when they suggested that Moncada profiles as a Center Fielder. Among other things, he has tremendous foot speed which would be more of an asset at that position than it would be at second base. Yes, people said that about Tim Anderson, but Moncada's body type looks more like Mike Trout than Anderson's does. Moncada looks like is relatively muscle bound. Perhaps third base if he wants to play the infield. In reality, many young men that are Moncada's age don't like to listen to parents, teachers and coaches so I doubt he will. One thing I might try would be to tell Moncada that CF is there for the taking but second base may not be, especially by the time he is ready to come up. Saladino might nail down that spot down if he continues to play well. These posts amuse me. So when you had this discussion with the scout. What exactly about his game told you that he should be a CF besides that he is a big strong guy. The Saladino fan club keep trying to move our top prospects either from SS or from 2nd base because they happen to play a position that Saladino plays. Everyone gets moved to CF.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 1, 2017 -> 11:56 PM) My approach involves free agent spending. I think I can expect my team to do that when they charge huge dollars for parking, food and drink. Fans gotta spend; why not the owners?? Your approach is not sustainable and is the reason we have floundered for years. There is no magic trinkets that will put this team over the top. The fact that you look at the roster and think that we are only a few pieces from contending is laughable.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 1, 2017 -> 11:45 PM) Did you read my previous post? Your approach to team building is that of someone playing checkers when the game is chess.

I am holding an outdoor baseball practice for my travel team outside in February this weekend. The weather this weekend will be remembered when they are freezing their asses off in early April.
