QUOTE(Jimbo @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 07:49 PM) Ok, ill take your grain of salt....Wright is staying the kid actually values an education as well. i don't think going pro means a kid doesn't value an education. going pro doesn't mean you're not getting your degree. -

although i'm no fan of native american mascots, i think there is a distinction between a pro team using one and a college team using one. a pro team is a private business, so if it wants to go ahead and use a "hostile and abusive" image, that's its prerogative. but, a university that receives either state or federal funding should be held to a different standard, imo. -
QUOTE(IowaSoxFan @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 05:35 PM) In his blog Olney mentions that the Mets have their rotation in bad shape and will likely try to make a trade at midseason. He says that depending on the standings they will try to make a deal and mentions MB, Jason Jennings, and Jake Westbrook as targets. Says that they will try to use Milledge as bait to reel in a starter, but doubts that will be enough with the premium on pitching in the current market. I guess he is implying that the Astros Indians and Sox will be out of contention and the Mets still will be contending, something I don't really buy. even he isn't buying it considering he declared the indians his al favorite this morning.

QUOTE(Jimbo @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 04:55 PM) oh goodie another tarheel fan haha. Well you played roy ball, which means well no Defense. settle down. you were probably ready to toss old roy's salad a few years ago. bitterness is not becoming. -

QUOTE(Brian @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 04:35 PM) I believe Carmelo Anthony said the same thing after his freshmen year, also hundreds of other kids who then went NBA. normally i'd agree, but the conventional wisdom with rush was that he was a one-and-done. the fact he stayed a second year was somewhat of a surprise, so i'll give him the benefit of the doubt now. -
looks like osu is about to add this guy to it's 08 class. it would be another great get for matta and the fourth five-star in that class.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 02:54 PM) Well the OSU football team is by far the most popular sports team in Ohio, so its going to be hard to contend. true, and it won't change. i have never seen one sports team as engrained in the local culture as ohio state football is here. that's why i think it could be difficult to keep matta around. -

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 02:46 PM) Im not there so I wouldnt know, I only hear from my relatives who are there. But I was not saying its the same as football, OSU is clearly a football school, and football is far and away more popular in the US anyway. it's a bit difficult to explain, i guess. there is some excitement here, but it's just not as widespread. people are happy, but more because they support the university than they really understand what's going on. i'd say you are as likely to hear a random sports fan b****ing about the blue jackets as you are to hear them pumping up ohio state basketball. i judge a lot by listening to callers on sports radio. usually the more critical they are, the more passionate they are. on the monday after ohio state beat michigan you can still hear people calling in and criticizing tressel. that's just the nature of things with football here. with basketball, it's more, "yeah, we won, go bucks. thirty-seven days until the spring game." -

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 01:59 PM) You DO know that today was the first time they were ranked #1 since 1962, and they were #2 going into the game vs Wisco, and they did just win back to back reg season championships. Thats pretty much the reason that anyone stormed, like you said they dont see much of this. Like you said its mostly a football schools, but there is a pretty large basketball following as OSU especially since Matta brought the program back out of complete shame. There is alot of excitement in Columbus over this and the women's team. i don't know rock, i just don't know if i totally agree that. i work on campus, and it is not even close to the same as football. it's obviously a totally different thing, but i just don't feel that "buzz." maybe it's just me. -

QUOTE(watchtower41 @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 01:51 PM) Also just out of curiosity, is this a heated topic in Columbus?? I find the rumor interesting, and don't feel bad...there are plenty of coaches that would drop everything on a dime to head for Kentucky. Youre talking about a program with more wins than any other school in history. Its one out of a handful of meccas that clearly seperate themselves from the rest. In my opinion, Tubby isn't going anywhere. Beating Louisville is nowhere close to being enough for the Big Blue faithful. Nor should it be, but Tubby is a fine coach. it depends. as you noted there isn't a lot of "buzz" about this team, even now. most discussion doesn't get much past "how far will we go" or "will oden stay." but the topic has been broached repeatedly by kirk herbstreit on his radio show out here. herbstreit has been critical of osu basketball fans for a long, long time for their lack of passion for the sport. if you go to a game at the schott, it's like a morgue unless it is a really, really big game. herbstreit has speculated that eventually this lack of passion and basketball's second-class status would cause matta to leave if he were offered a "marquee" job. i only mention kentucky because that was the only one of those jobs i could see opening soon. but, only matta really knows that and right now he's spouting the party line. imo, he would leave if a major job outside of the big ten opened. people aren't really excited about basketball here now, and if they aren't excited now they are never going to be. -

QUOTE(watchtower41 @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 01:23 PM) Sure, I got a good chuckle when the Buckeyes fans were storming the court, when they already are #1. It should go without saying to act like youve won something important before, it also goes without saying that Buckeye basketball doesnt get too see too much of this. In the past 10-15 years, the Big X has been dominated by the likes of MSU and Indiana, with other schools such as Wisconsin and Illinois peaking their heads in to steal a title here and there. Sure, there has been a lot of hype surrounding this Ohio State team dating back to pre-season rankings, but I can't imagine being a fan of Ohio State basketball is really intense experience like some other "elite" programs look at how to celebrate and support their team. Just liek much of the rest of the Big X, Ohio State is a football school first and formost.... and when their basketball team does well, it seems like "out of the ordinary" and gives reason to cherish the moment at a higher level (because who knows when this might happen again approach) Jim Jackson's and Michael Redd's dont grow on trees down in Columbus. So it still may not be right that they "storm", but in someways at least it is understandable. Jimbo, please tell me I am havnig trouble reading your post saying that KU will go down in Norman tonight?? I don't know, these arent your Grandpapi Sampson's Sooners anymore. Dont let the late season paranoia set in....we are a non-stop freight train right now. We almost doubled the spread on Saturday night, and we were favored by 20+ i think in general you are selling ohio state's program pretty short. outside of a season or two they've been consistently good for the past 10 years. maybe not as good as they are now, but pretty strong nonetheless. but i do agree with your general point. basketball is second here and for the most part fans aren't really into it. this is one reason i think matta would leave if a job like kentucky came open. -
here's a story on illinois recruit quinton watkins: newspaper this game was last monday. since then he's scored 29, then 30 points in his team's playoff wins. dominguez (the third seed) next plays second seeded artesia on tuesday. artesia has a few d1 kids, so it will be a big test.

i blame a lot of that on the break. that was just a bad idea, imo. part of this show is predicated on momentum and taking that huge break sapped whatever momentum had been built. i hope next year they take a more similar approach to what they do with 24. taking that break just sucks. also, one poster noted the diminishing ratings the past two weeks. certainly the break influenced that, but i also think the later time slot is playing a role. television viewership declines at the top of each hour, so it makes sense that pushing lost back an hour would cost it viewers. to me the more important numbers are how it is doing against the competition in that time slot, and in that vein lost is still doing quite well.

put me in the camp that doesn't really care whether or not fans rush the court after a game. it makes me laugh that there has to be certain criteria now for a team to be able to rush the court. i picture students at games holding a checklist and checking it as time winds down: "ok, were we the underdog? check. have we been a historically bad program? check. was the team we beat ranked? check. OK LET'S GO!" i mean, i understand it happens more often today than it did, but that's just a byproduct of that stuff being on television more often. but to me, if kids want to storm the court they should. it is, in the end, more about the students than about the team or the program. and for those students, this is their time. it made me laugh when people complained about msu fans rushing the floor because msu has been a great program and won the tournament a few years ago. what the hell does that mean to current msu students who were in high school then? -
apparently bocot has canceled his visit to iowa and is committed to siu. since the salukis have no scholarships remaining, either a prep school or a transfer is probably in the offing. either way, nice get. bocot is a very talented player. his attitude has come in question in the past but i've read good things about how he's matured this year.

i've been on television a few times for work-related things, and was on oprah when i was in high school. i'm not really an oprah fan but she was nice and it was a cool experience. i used to work as a newspaper reporter and i had a chance to cover some ohio state games. at ohio stadium they send reporters to the field for the final five minutes of the game, which is pretty sweet. well a few years ago osu played marshall at home and marshall gave them all they could handle. mike nugent won the game with a 54-yard field goal as time expired. i was covering that game, and as he was lining up for the kick i went down and stood right under the goalpost because i knew the camera would be there. sure enough, i was on espn that night.

QUOTE(fathom @ Feb 23, 2007 -> 09:37 PM) The spin job by the Illini fans is amazing right now. Besides for many thinking that all charges vs Jamar will be dropped, some have even mentioned this will help recruiting because Weber will be looked at as looking out for any African-American athlete who gets in trouble. I couldn't even make up something as stupid as that. who is saying this?

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Feb 23, 2007 -> 07:52 PM) They did make the elite 8, I'm sure there were many factors that 'blew apart your bracket' rather than an elite 8 team that didn't make the final four. but i choose to blame them. -

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 23, 2007 -> 05:34 PM) based on talent, I think they are very good. i thought the same last year and picked them to go to the final four. thus, my skepticism this year is mostly residual bitterness over them blowing apart my bracket. -
