QUOTE(Jimbo @ Feb 16, 2007 -> 05:05 PM) If Self wants him, Self can have him. i'd agree with this. verdell's father is a prominent aau coach in central illinois and he and self had a great working relationship. most scuttlebutt on illinois boards suggest that if kansas offers, that is where verdell will go. from what i've read verdell is a very talented player, more of a pure point guard than a scoring point so he's a bit different than sherron. he is very slight, however, and some people are scared off. as of now he's a three-star, but he could move up with a strong summer. no doubt he'll get the chance consider his dad is his summer coach. on a different note, great story in the sun-times today on illinois running back recruit deries hodge. hodge was only a two-star recruit and was under the radar because he attended four different high schools in four years. lemming is quoted in the story and said he did not learn about hodge until really late in the process. he said if he had to rate him now he'd place him among the top-10 running back recruits in the country. he also said hodge is illinois's third-best recruit after benn and wilson. deries hodge

QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Feb 16, 2007 -> 04:04 PM) Also as an alumni, it did enhance my undergraduate experience. I looked forward to football games (they were actually good when I went there) and got goose bumps every halftime. I also went to a game in the early 80's when I was in Jr. High and the Chief was one of a few things I remember (also beating the snot out of Indiana). I know a former Chief and he has always held that position in incredibly high regard. I am saddened by this move, disappointed that the University didn't do more to fight the NCAA, but will take it in stride and support the University going forward. But, they will definitely be under more scrutiny for awhile. RIP...Chief Illiniwek. i respect that. i wouldn't dismiss the fact that the chief means a lot to a lot of people. i guess i just think it's time to move on. with the passage of time other traditions will emerge. i have to disagree a bit. i think it should be the university's responsibility to do something productive in regards to native americans (i.e. a scholarship endowment, better native american studies program, etc.). it is the university that has most benefitted from the chief, so it should be the university that steps up, not separate groups. your point about fsu is a great illustration of this. florida state has been a longtime financial supporter of the seminole ethnic group. they recognized they were drawing a huge financial benefit from having the seminole as a mascot, and addressed that by passing some of the profits along to the group. now, the illini tribe is gone, so there couldn't be any direct passing along of benefits. but i am not sure the university ever really stepped forward to put its money where its mascot was. it could easily do that via scholarship endowments or something similar. -
QUOTE(Jimbo @ Feb 16, 2007 -> 03:41 PM) Verdell Jones from Champaign could be the next illinois player to head to Kansas. very good possibility. his father and self were very close when self was at illinois. as of now though verdell has offers from neither illinois nor kansas. illinois does have an offer out to 08 point guard lewis jackson, although there is a lot of debate over whether he or jackson are better players. another factor in this could be where champaign football player mikel leshoure (a highly touted running back) decides to go. he and little v are close and play hoops together.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 16, 2007 -> 03:38 PM) Its about time that racist figurehead doing gymnastics is let go. In 5 years, the students at Illinois wont even know or remember that at halftime some white guy did a made up dance in a costume. in five years i will however remember the sight of two arizona state co-eds tongue kissing at a football game. that's been indelibly burned into my psyche. -

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Feb 16, 2007 -> 11:22 AM) I advocate Drinkin' Lincoln for the new mascot! A hard-drinking Abe Lincoln impersonator! word. as for this decision, i'm in favor of it. it was time. yes, it was a tradition, but i tend to agree with 101 that all this handwringing over some white guy prancing around in a costume was overdone on both sides. i'm tired of the argument and happy that at least part of it go away. as an alumni, i care that my university offers great educational opportunities, is at the forefront of research, and has student-athletes that we can be proud of. i don't really give a damn about the mascot. it did nothing to enhance my undergraduate experience. -
QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Feb 15, 2007 -> 09:05 PM) There have been several threads attacking Black leaders or public figures of being racist due to the interpretation of comments they made. Never in those threads did I read anyone supporting their right to make those statements. It was pretty much..."Shut up!" great point.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Feb 15, 2007 -> 07:08 PM) While Hardaway has a right to his opinion, prejudice is ignorant. Hate is a pretty strong word. It will be interesting to see if he sticks with being frank, or backs off and tries to be PC. Anyway you slice it, I think he comes off as a dope. he already went on television in miami last night and backed off.

Indians sign RHP Politte to minor league deal

i think this is interesting. last year cleveland went with the approach of filling its bullpen with young untested guys. this year they're going with mostly retreads and older guys. maybe next year they'll try the novel approach of stocking their bullpen with guys who are good. -

there are a lot of disconcerting things about this story, and a lot of smoke. fwiw, there is also a discrepancy in news reports of whether or not smith made the 911 call from his apartment. the ap story says he does, yet the sun-times story says he did not and it was made by someone in his apartment complex. you could go a lot of ways with this speculation. for now, all i know for certain is that i am happy it looks like carlwell will be ok.

QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Feb 14, 2007 -> 06:37 PM) Not if he can get them back to the top of the Big 12 North, he won't. And especially considering the whole Neuheisel/Barnett fiascos before him. This is tame. hawkins apparently delivered his rant at a booster meeting.

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Feb 14, 2007 -> 05:53 PM) Wisconsin is the worst team in the Big 10. Its Football team is the worst, and its basketball team is second worst (behind Northwestern) i think this is a breakthrough moment. we're making progress now. -

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Feb 14, 2007 -> 01:21 AM) Wow, can't believe people are still arguing with KU fans. I'll give you a hint, they live in their own world. They can't get over Roy leaving Kansas for his alma mater after building the program into the current level KU enjoys now. Nevermind the 15+ years of loyalty he showed, while Bill job hopping Self is at his 4th head coaching gig and counting. Maybe they are just nervous that Bill Self will be the first applicant at a better job if Carolina, Duke, or Kentucky's job open up. They need to come out of the phog. and a shot to the solar plexus. -
QUOTE(Heads22 @ Feb 12, 2007 -> 05:49 PM) CYCLONE WRESTLING IS BACK The #3 Clones slapped around the #2 Mizzou Tigers last night, 27-12, without one of our starters. We've lost twice to #1 Minnesota this year, but we're so much further ahead than where anyone thought we'd be. We've got a legit shot to win a national championship in something for the first time in like 10 years. Oh, Jas, Iowa is ranked tenth. hey, i didn't know wrestling was getting discussed here. who knew? good stuff, though. what a sport.

Bears bashing boggles the mind
thedoctor replied to Controlled Chaos's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
great column and he makes great points. sadly, i think that a lot of bear fans didn't even enjoy this season. people were more preoccupied with bashing/defending grossman than enjoying the second-best season the bears have had probably in the past 30 years. and since the game ended it's even been worse. two days after the super bowl and were treated to stories in the times and trib about jeff garthia's interest in the bears? why in the flock would we want garthia? why are people clamoring for this guy? what has he ever accomplished that suggest he'd step in and be good here? it just boggles the mind. -

QUOTE(Jimbo @ Feb 10, 2007 -> 11:42 PM) Their resume sucks and have one half decent win....Indiana. for the most part i'd agree with you. but there just isn't a lot of depth in college basketball this year. maybe 8-10 really good teams and then teams that are pretty similar. in that climate i still like their chances. -
QUOTE(whitesox61382 @ Feb 9, 2007 -> 10:14 PM) I am just curious, where did you hear that Hughes was a silent to Illinois? I haven't seen anything on that, although I am certainly not saying that it isn't true. it was in teddy greenstein's story in the trib today. chicagosports.com
