QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Mar 24, 2007 -> 05:29 PM) Honestly, I can't say that I'm a fan of any college basketball team. I graduated from Illinois, and I've never understood the absolute hatred for Bruce Pearl that fans of Illini basketball have. I'm pretty ambivalent about college athletics in general, I think the NCAA is tremendously hypocritical and obnoxious organization and the whole system just blows. But I really like basketball. The same goes for Illinois, I want to like the University I graduated from but what's happened lately -- the DUIs, the coverup, the burglaries, the AD acting like a bad little-league baseball parent have left me pretty disgruntled. I suppose my posts about Illinois athletics are more obnoxious than they should be because I'm disappointed. so you say it would be funny to see michigan rip illinois because illinois is embarrassing. bruce pearl isn't embarrassing? getting kicked out of high school games for harassing refs, showing up at the same games in stretch limos, being an attention whore who body paints himself to get extra pub? and michigan isn't embarrassing? they also have a hoops player who was busted this year (abram). they also are one of the few basketball programs that had final four appearances vacated from recruiting misdeeds. last i checked michigan also had two student-athletes in court last week on assault charges. glass houses, man, glass houses.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Mar 24, 2007 -> 04:42 PM) Obama clearly wants nothing to do with him because he's a bum and has all these problems. Not saying that not giving him money is bad -- just that Obama clearly doesn't want to be involved at all and so he's trying to pawn it off on his staff by telling them to get him to a social agency or something but the truth is he doesn't want to be associated with this guy. yep. if obama sends him some cash and the next day the guy gets busted buying an eight-ball you can guess someone will be posting a link about how obama is financing his friend's drug problem. obama did absolutely the right thing here.

QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 07:58 PM) I doubt it is Calipari. But UK has basically any coach in the country for their choosing. Beilein, Crean, and Gillepsie are some of the obvious choices. i dunno. i'm not sure beilein or crean are big enough candidates for them. beilein didn't make the tournament and crean was a first round exit. make no mistake, they will aim big with this hire. i could see calipari, donovan, gillespie, and maybe others on the list. i always thought matta would be their next coach, but i just don't think the timing is right now. -
QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 06:17 PM) The Locke-Ben story line boils down as follows (imho): Ben is perceived as all powerful by his people. What makes the people on the island perceive this is some what of a mystery, although I feel it is derived from the fact that Ben seems to know everything about everyone on the island. This part of the plot has not been developed at all, but has constantly been touched on (from the first others kidnapping when they had a "list"). It is clear that Ben some how is getting knowledge about these people, but at this point its nothing more than speculation on how its occuring. The Locke story line creates a problem for Ben. Locke was crippled but as soon as he came to the island was healed. Ben on the other hand was born on the island, never left the island, and not only has not been healed but has some how gotten sick. There have been 2 other cases of miracle heals, with the lady who had cancer and perhaps with Sun and Jin. But it appears that Ben really has no understanding of the healing power of the island. This connects to an even more remote story line in Australia where I believe it was the black lady was going to a "power source" where she would be healed. When she met the healer he said something cryptic like "this is not your place to be healed." If you extrapolate that situation to here it would appear that the island is a similar power source that may not heal all people equally. Even further it may be the type of injury/person that plays a role in whether or not the miracle can occur. Ben is perceived as "good" by his people, but as the story line has progressed it is clear that by "good" Ben is doing everything for his own sake. Comparitively, Locke was injured being altruistic. He paralyzed because he went out of his way to try and save another family from his father's con with no real benefit to himself. In fact Locke never even makes an offer to split the money etc, he just did not want that family to be conned as he had. Perhaps as Ben has become twisted and more self-serving, he has lost the connection to the island that he once had, and that loss of connection is manifesting itself in the cancer, and now in his inability to walk. Even the destruction of the sub confirms Ben's motives. Instead of thinking that he could use the sub to go back and perhaps get better at another place, he is so determined to prevent Jack from leaving, and from showing weakness that he would rather stay on the island forever and remain the god/leader that he perceives himself to be. As for letting them go, I believe that some how Locke will strike a deal with Ben that in exchange for Locke staying with Ben and helping him, that the other 3 will be let go. I think Locke will start to see that Ben is a conman like his father and that he will realize the errors in his way, and Locke may be the person to erode Ben's power. Because it is unclear whether only Ben knows about everyone, or whether all the others know. As it could be interesting if onyl Ben knows Locke used to be in a wheel chair. interesting analysis. i do think some of the others know locke was in a wheelchair. i primarily base that off what the russian said right before he got tossed into the sonic weapon fence.

QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 05:17 PM) I was reading this article and saw this.. The legendary Ronnie "Woo Woo" Wickers woo-wooed a lot from behind home plate, high-fived the slackened hands around him, and posed for a photo with a newborn. When an elderly, ill-humored woman a few rows over finally snapped, "Would you sit down and shut up!" Woo Woo was for a moment crestfallen, then waved and responded, "I love you!" Killing her with Cubbiness. Couple things...How does this guy afford to be at spring training...Do the cubs pay for him to go? Who the f*** would want a picture with him let alone hand over their newborn to get one? Kudos to the old lady. I have no idea how I would handle it if woo woo was a Sox fan and doing his spiel the whole game. It would drive me absolutely nuts. we did have andy the clown, but he was just colorful. GO...WHITE...SOX! i loved andy the clown, and generally clowns disturb me.

i planted some grass seed on some spots in my yard a few weeks ago (i used the grass seed/mulch mix) when it got warm. since then it's gotten cold again (dropped below freezing two or three times). anyhow, my question is is the seed still good. some folks have told me that the seed won't grow since it got real cold, while others have told me it's fine and will be good to go as soon as the weather turns for good. any insight would be appreciated.

Good article about Illinois basketball

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 20, 2007 -> 02:25 PM) Of course it's not, you have to pay to get most good players EVERYWHERE in this nation. To say it's only like that in the CPL is crazy. Bruce is never going to be able to get players out of that league though, regardless of what that article says. to say he will "never" get a kid out of the cpl overlooks the fact he got the best kid in the city three years ago. i'll grant you that brock wasn't a top-shelf five-star kid, but never is all-encompassing. perhaps you'd like to clarify. -

here is a follow up story to the first piece among the items here: -the "walk out" story is a myth. didn't happen. -both wolf nelson and lamont bryant have things to say about weber here, although probably not what you'd think. -there have been acknowledged issues with longstreet, whom weber has not spoken to since the collins recruitment. -as i've said all along, people trying to paint the cpl as a lone entity don't know what they are talking about. enjoy. -

hopefully he'll improve on the dogtihs record he had at north texas in his first head coaching job. below .500 i believe. his first important recruiting job will be to convince freshman guard osiris eldridge to stay. -
no offense to neal cotts here, but this made me lol this morning out of rosenbloom's blog:

saturday afternoon was one of the best stretches of games i've seen.

best line from last week's episode goes to sayid: "pardon me for not knowing they had a sonic weapon fence." for whatever reason that made me lol.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 07:23 AM) The only thing Weber can afford less in terms of perception overall than another low character recruit is another low talent recruit. Santiago would probably be the best raw talent he's brought in, and all things i've heard are he's got his ish together recently, plus Illinois desperately needs a guard that can shoot and create. i'd agree with this. as sketchy as some of the things in santiago's past have been, i think the final scholly spot this year has to go to someone who can conceivably provide immediate help at guard. santiago is the only one mentioned as a candidate for that spot who could do that. this is a chance weber may have to take as a hedge against his previous misses.

The West Bracket (San Jose)
thedoctor replied to greasywheels121's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Mar 17, 2007 -> 02:38 PM) Well, they lose Warren Carter who was probably their best player this season. And they also lose McBride, who was their best guard. And I'll go ahead and assume Jamar Smith won't be around either. Semrau might be able to offset Carter's loss to some extent. But an team that is is already offensively challenged will lose 2 of it's top 3 offensive players. that's a better rationale. i don't really agree, but mcbride and carter's losses are a heckuva lot more relevant to next year's illinois team than the fact that they have the seventh-rated recruiting class in the league. -

QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Mar 17, 2007 -> 02:00 PM) Well, odds are that IL won't make the NCAA tournament next season (#7 recruiting class in the conference after a #6 finish this year). that's not a very strong rationale.
