You don't think the Padres could afford his 2025 salary of less than half his $15M slightly before July 31 ? That's About $6-7M. The other yrs are option years so they could just not pick up the option for 2026.

My 2 cents worth is he's trying to be something the Sox want him to be and as of yet the changes aren't working. He can't be that guy who can have a good walk rate and still be the hitter he was in 2023. He's opened his stance, moved farther back in the box, has a smaller leg kick than in 2023. Those changes all seem designed to give him a longer look at the ball and simplify his swing but sometimes his swing looks like all arm's and no legs/hips in it. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that he hasn't been the same player since returning from his right hip flexor that he sustained in April 2024. He also had the serious right hip flexor tear in May 2021. He just doesn't seem to crush the ball for 425 ft+ HRs anymore . To my eyes he looks stiffer and his timing is way off. Let's get back the front knee lifted higher leg kick ,close the stance and move up a tiny bit in the box guy from 2023 and find the high EV, power hitter again not the weak hitting walker.

I was wondering if some stat head was going to come up with something about Elko being the only Rookie in Sox history to hit 3 HRs in his 1st 30 AB to be sent down to the minors so fast or something like that.

It's pretty bad but did Vargas bobble it or not able to get a grip on it and also fall to his knees. A clean play and they get the out at home. Rojas could've been put in as a defensive replacement in the 9th especially if they think Rojas is the better 3rd baseman.

Without making a big deal out of it there's 2 reasons to give veterans 1 year deals when you're bad. 1. Your youngsters aren't ready. 2. Trade them. Don't know who will end up traded or unceremoniously dumped but Colson 's setback was major. The highs and lows have to be less dramatic. You're looking for consistency and a major part of consistency is time. He could have an 0 for 15 slump in a week you'd like to see him bounce back from strongly. He needs the confidence that comes from longer stretches of excellence than a month. A lot of the vets Getz hoped to trade have been injured. Now they're not. A few extra arms at the TDL won't hurt the organization devastated by all the pitching injuries. And Colson showing some consistency of excellence won't hurt either.

There's no hurry though.He didn't do well all of last year and so bad this year that his star had dimmed quite a bit. He and everyone else has to be sure it's not just a hot streak. He could convince all the doubters by continuing on a run for all of June. Maybe then if there's an injury or an early trade sure. I would think if he's still in the minors through July that's even more time to see if he can maintain the good hitting. There should definitely be space for him on the Sox 26 by then. No need to force things. Let it play out.

My guess is August after the trade deadline. Let him settle in for a few months with the things him and Fuller worked on. It might not always be smooth sailing . I could be wrong with Getz wanting LH pop but I'd rather make sure he's 100 % ready . Getz needs to find more pitching .All the injuries are already taking a toll on organizational depth and May isn't over yet. Long long way to go.
