Sox sign CF Gorkys Hernandez to minor league deal
Especially when guys like Palka and Delmonico wouldn't be big losses if Engel was sent down. Their days are numbered as it is. I'm going to take a guess on Holt's contract . 1 yr. $3.75M .

I liked Maybin especially if you believe that his numbers were the result of a new swing. I know he feels that way and thinks he will have a good year.

Sox sign CF Gorkys Hernandez to minor league deal
If we revisited the thread about payroll expectations this year, aren't we still under the $120M which was the Athletic number ? I'm going to guess more than half the people who posted thought it would be higher. I know it's nitpicking to say I'm unhappy about the lack of late signings but I am. Sure I can understand relying on Mendick and Leury and not trading more prospects but I really think the bullpen could use more help especially a long reliever. Heck you can see what the Red Sox want for Brandon Workman but that seems like a move for a team who is sure they are going to contend or more likely to happen at the deadline if the Red Sox still feel they can contend and it doesn't happen. I can't help but feel they skimped a little on payroll this year not only in order to see how everything looks at the trade deadline but also to prepare for next year, But it just feels like they are in wait and see mode rather than trying to make the playoffs this year. Perhaps too many young pitchers and pitchers in general coming off injuries to push more chips in. Just seems odd that Hahn has talked about how JR reminds him that he isn't getting any younger but we still didn't make a much larger effort to win this year. In my mind I am also drawing a correlation between the current payroll and increased spending in IFA and more developmental aspects of the game such as biomechanics or more high speed cameras. I have no knowledge that we have more high speed cameras now then before but I am seeing cameras in some of the spring training photos behind the pitchers. Maybe this feeling needs its own thread but that's how I feel.

White Sox Spring Training Thread
https://www.mlb.com/news/30-mlb-players-poised-to-make-leap-2020 White Sox -- Eloy Jiménez, LF: He was starting to really put it together late in the year, and he obviously has light-tower power. He might be the best candidate on this entire list, a dark horse to hit 50 homers.

In the 2005 ALCS Crede should 've won MVP but Konerko got it instead.

FS: What's Driving Mercedes' Power?
I'll make a hot take on Mercedes which we will never know. I'd think if he and Robert both were on the opening day 26 I'd say he would hit just as well as Robert in an equal amount of PA's. He's K'd less and walked more at the same level and has had years to get to where he is. Of course Robert would be 4 X as valuable due to defense and speed but for hitting alone I think it would be close .

FS: What's Driving Mercedes' Power?
Not a chance unless Encarnacion gets injured and they ignore Collins. Even then i'd be skeptical. After all they didn't bring him up last year when it meant nothing.and gave AB's to Castillo and Yolmer even though we all agreed they were out the door after the season while not giving more AB's to Mendick and Collins.

OF Prospects - Who will Rebound in 2020?
I agree if there's a "none of the above" there should be an "all of the above" choice too.

Most Memorable Sox Game You've Attended?
It's in my signature. Clinching game in Anaheim to win the pennant in 05. I put that signature before the game and as you can see I was very confident that it would be the clinching game. After losing game 1 Game 2 was the AJ controversial call. 2 outs in the 9th AJ reaches on the infamous play. Ozuna pinch runs and steals 2nd and Crede, down 0-2 in the count, ropes one into the LF corner for the walk off series tying hit. Who knows what the out come of that series becomes if the Sox were down 0-2. In game 5 Crede hits the game tying HR in the 7th. Then with 2 outs in the 8th on a 2 out, 3-2 pitch ,Crede hits a grounder behind 2nd base and Rowand scores from 2nd . Contreras goes the distance for the Sox 4th straight complete game. Best rally Crede's ever !

FS: What's Driving Mercedes' Power?
The author has every right to question the output of Mercedes especially since the Sox didn't pay $50M for him or draft him high. He still has plenty of obstacles in his way to ever getting ML AB's , I sometimes get annoyed that everyone wants great production but when we get it then it's analyzed on how sustainable it is, It's like he isn't producing he sucks . Then he's producing but all these numbers say its unsustainable or it isn't what he's shown in the past. I always kind of take the whole development isn't linear concept to heart and just want to believe it's real development and just enjoy it for a bit. We all get it. No matter how well he hits he cant play D very well and he's 26 so no will put him in the Sox top 30 prospects. I'm rooting for the kid to get a shot somewhere sometime. It was a huge accomplishment just to get to the 40.I'm no exception to liking the underdog; it's nice to know he seems popular with Sox fans. He's bashed his way into our consciousness and maybe he can stay there for a little while longer. https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/yermin-mercedes-is-the-feel-good-story-of-the-40-man-roster-deadline/

So excited for the new season
I'd rather have Chris Taylor, Now that is one valuable and versatile guy. Dodgers would want more for Taylor than they would for Joc most likely.

KW says "no Puig"
I spent time because you asked for stuff in the last 6 -12 months so I gave it to you because no one else did. And don't forget the refusing to use defensive positioning cards again was also in the last 12 months. I gave you extra just to highlight how many suspensions he's had though I think the one where he gave the finger to Cleveland fans was reduced to community service . I'm not moralizing at all, Just facts is all I'm doing for anyone who is interested, It's all pretty easy to find and not that time consuming. No one is going to change their minds but maybe some will use it for educational purposes. As for myself, I like doing research because it helps to have the full picture before making up my mind. There was a time a few years ago maybe before the rebuild that I liked Puig and probably made a few posts on acquiring him when Caulfield was in his heyday as the Puig advocate. I actually think the Sox are finished sighing anyone to a ML contract, Anything we see probably will be a minor league contract though I'm still hoping for Holt or a long reliever.

I'll add that Yoelkis Cespedes is already 22 so hopefully he can sign July 2nd. He'll be 23 in September.

You'd think a smart guy like you could find the facts pretty easily but perhaps I give you too much credit and you are just doing your troll dance again.

KW says "no Puig"
This article is from 4/2019 and is very fair about Puig's days with the Dodgers. Near the end of it , it says Puig still thinks he knew the league well enough to not use defensive positioning cards when he got to Cincinnati. You do know he was suspended twice in 2019 right ? Puig was involved in bench-clearing brawls in each of two Reds losses to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The first one in the top of the fourth inning of a 7–5 defeat at PNC Park on April 7, 2019 resulted in an ejection and a two-game suspension for extending hostilities.[58][59] He reenacted his actions just under four months later on July 30 in the top of the ninth of an 11–4 loss at Great American Ball Park, minutes after news broke that he was going to be traded to the Cleveland Indians.[60] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yasiel_Puig https://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers/la-sp-yasiel-puig-dodgers-legacy-reds-20190414-story.html It's a long article with quotes from temmates Other links to various suspensions over the years. https://www.mlb.com/news/chris-archer-yasiel-puig-suspended https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/giants/dodgers-yasiel-puig-suspended-fined-obscene-gesture-indians-fans https://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers/la-sp-dodgers-puig-suspend-20180815-story.html For older stuff there's also the Molly Knight Book : The Best Team Money Can Buy. She's done plenty of interviews on the book and Puig so here's one https://www.espn.com/blog/los-angeles/dodger-report/post/_/id/15540/a-qa-with-author-molly-knight

KW says "no Puig"
I wasn't taking a moral stance on his misadventures. I was saying there are too many misadventures to think he would be a model citizen on the Sox so I prefer not to have him. As long as baseball continues to allow him to pursue a contract saying what he has done compared to others is totally missing the point. It was others who brought up that driving 110 mph with others in the car wasn't so bad. Again the severity of the offense never was the point but yet I'm the troll or idiot. How can the point repeatedly keep being missed ? I certainly was drawn into it when I probably just should have said I'm not judging the crime I'm only thinking he has too many incidents to hire him. Talent often wins out over flakiness or being a disruptive personality so you would do it if you were his boss. I wouldn't. He hasn't done anything heinous. He's just doesn't seem to comprehend that he is not his own boss when there is a hierarchy of those who chose to pay you.

So excited for the new season
Excited to see Kopech and Madrigal very much even if it won't be right away. Super excited to see Robert , You keep hearing about the speed, power and fielding and the stats back it all up. Just to throw a little tidbit out there; Robert was the 1st minor leaguer since 1961 who was 30/30 (HR's and Stolen bases) +300 Total bases.

Nick Madrigal will have a shot at being the Opening Day 2b
So you've been a baseball fan for a long time and always thought the left side of the infield was in front of a place they call Right Field while the right side of the infield was in front of Left Field ? Always thought it was kind of self explanatory but hey now you know ; Some times our brains betray us. As a kid and not knowing much about death and having some relatives who threw around words like babushka and klotzskis, I'd often hear the term "who died and left you boss" ? I thought died and left was one foreign word in German or something. Diedundtlefft. I eventually figured it out .
