White Sox Hiring for Analytics Department
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Chicago White Sox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Wondering if these positions are new positions or guys left who need to be replaced. If new positions shouldn't we have seen this at the start of the rebuild ? Like bmags says the whole one foot in one foot out approach is concerning. -
Burdi removed from AFL "general fatigue"

Sox sign Manny Machado........ Hahn steps on Machado's heel at press conference and ruptures Machado's achilles tendon. Machado out for the year. -
Burdi removed from AFL "general fatigue"
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I feel ya but you know any fan who follows whats happening to Burdi and sees that he's been shut down for general fatigue pretty much automatically the alarm bells in your head go off .Any time even a healthy pitcher goes down with a vague reason like that it makes you wonder then it doubles for a guy coming back from surgery even though we know its part of the process. Fegan is only mentioning what most of us are thinking. Maybe we all need to become more familiar with a timeline for recovery . Maybe you can do that while also explaining just because there's a timeline doesn't mean it's a linear process. -
Burdi removed from AFL "general fatigue"
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Someone posted it in one of the future sox threads. People reacted positively but all he said was he looked good. He didn't say how hard he was throwing . I mean you can look good throwing 93-95. A lot of pitchers prove that. If he gets back most or all of his velocity eventually even better. Basically we've had posters worried that he's at 93-95 then comes the Longehagen chats that says he looked good without mentioning speed and posters take it positively. -
Burdi removed from AFL "general fatigue"
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Not only that but total lack of baseball knowledge and perspective. We just watched a World Series where Eovaldi was throwing 101 after 2 Tommy John surgeries. How much time did he miss ? How many set backs did he have ? How many times was he fatigued ? Are we going to hearing the same shit when Kopoch's return doesn't go in some linear ,orderly fashion to suit the internet Nazi's ? -
https://www.mlb.com/video/giants-honor-willie-mccovey/c-2518534883 I post this because I am sure many of us here are old enough to remember "Stretch" McCovey as an imposing hitter and because news like this ofteb gets overlooked in the off season. In the heyday when the 2 Willie's were wreaking havoc on NL pitching for the Giants in the golden age for African American ballplayers in the 1960's they (McCovey and Mays) were an awesome duo. My slightly older brother was a big baseball fan as was I and he was the only one to ever call me Willie ( William being my middle name), while my best friends father called me "stretch" for being so tall for my age in those late 60's days when I played asphalt baseball in schoolyards with a rubber ball with friends many days. We wouldn't even call each other since we were all in the same neighborhood on Chicago's southwest side. We'd just go to houses and yelling for them to play some ball. Fond memories brought up by the McCovey passing. RIP Willie.

Seems fair to me. He gave an upside and a downside. -
Sox acquire LHP Manny Bañuelos for Justin Yurchak
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I think it was a mutually beneficial trade that likely yields no decent results for either side. Just didn't understand why you 'd rather give him a chance over Covey. I think they both get a chance because that's the business the Sox are in right now Search every " warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse ". just like in The Fugitive. -
Sox acquire LHP Manny Bañuelos for Justin Yurchak
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
That's one way to look at it or you might try this. The Dodgers are so loaded with talent that they couldn't put a 27 yr old with an injury history but a recent return to health and showing decent velocity on their 40 man roster in order to protect him from the Rule 5 draft . The Sox gave up a 22yr old A ball 1st baseman for a good AAA pitcher who once was highly rated but will be in his age 28 season when the season starts but pitching pain free for the 1st time in a while who also happens to be left handed which the Sox need in the rotation. Rather than take the risk someone took him in the Rule 5 ahead of them they traded a young guy who wasn't even in their Top 50 prospects who was a 12th round pick. -

CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I wasn't doubting he has talent but doesn't Covey also throw that hard ? Don't care much about Yurchak. I still think the Dodgers got something for nothing (to them). It's just if I had to pick whether Covey or Banuelos will end up being a starter in MLB I'd bet on Covey since he's been there done that and is slightly younger . I doubt either one stays in the rotation for 2+ years but Banuelos is another arm to add to the mix and a lefty to boot but just like Covey it's getting to the point of no return for him. They both will likely gets starts this year barring injury and that;s another place here I give the Covey the advantage. Banuelos has had arm injuries whereas Covey's recent injuries have been groin and obliques. -

CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Really ?He'll be 28 when the season starts and hasn t pitched in the majors since 2015 . Covey had a handful of starts where he actually looked good in 2018. Not that it really matters . I suppose we could use another lefty in the rotation . Dodgers savvy to get rid of someone they weren't going to protect in the rule 5 for a 22 yr old who has a few years to discover if he's any good. They basically got something for a guy they were probably going to lose anyway. Well I was asking for more AAA talent so we got that. Just was hoping they'd be a little younger. Seems like the Sox should be the ones giving up 27 yr olds for 22-24 yr olds. -
He did well also in his 3 appearances. 3 IP. 1 H . 0 R. ! BB. 2 K. That's without much training and against MLB hitters . Pitch him in more mop up duties. I'm sure we will lose enough to have plenty of opportunities. If he continues to show promise try in some higher pressure situations where you might need an out or 2 against righties. Never know, could get a real pitcher out of it. Renteria's assessment be damned. He's living in the past . Davidson will be playing MLB in some capacity longer than Renteria manages.

FA pitchers the Sox could target

If he gets a QO from the Astro's he'll probably take it. 1 more year of $18M to bolster the ol' retirement portfolio. -

Bank went 5 innings , 8 hits ,5 runs, 2 earned 1 BB 2 K ,still has a 2.87 ERA. Dopico pitched 2 innings 1 hit , 0 runs, 0 walks 4 K . ERA lowered to 2.79. Nice to see an outing without a walk from him. -

I was just speculating yesterday on this very thing in the Future Sox AFL thread when I was checking AFL stats and saw Burdi hadn't pitched in a week and had the lowest amount of innings pitched on the staff. Guess I was right. -

The day after I post this (3rd paragraph as I haven't figured out how to BOLD it) SS2K5 posts in Palehose talk a Fegan tweet that says Burdi's been shut down with general fatigue. -
Dear FO: Harper VS Machado, Soxtalk Will Help You Decide
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Jerksticks's topic in Pale Hose Talk
You left out stepping on Pearce's heel also but your point is well taken. If he will switch to 3rd base sign him. Guys really good both offensively and defensively are so rare. If his antics eliminate a few teams , great, then the Sox have a better shot at him and maybe he'll cost less and have less opt outs. -

2018 World Series - Red Sox v. Dodgers
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Middle Buffalo's topic in The Diamond Club
Look at it this way , Sale and the Sox won the World Series ! What a team effort . So many guys had great moments for the Red Sox. Total team victory. A great team. Fanfare for the common baseball travelin' man ,Steve Pearce MVP. Combined a little Ricky Nelson and Emerson Lake and Palmer there. -

One injury filled season in the states and injuries in the DSL means the only thing we can judge him on is he can't healthy for very long. I wouldn't even be too concerned about lack of power next year. My main concern is keeping him healthy and getting some AB's . -
Which makes it impossible to rank the Sox system if you really aren't as familiar or biased towards the other ones. That being said. It's very hard to be optimistic after a very bad year of injuries and Margulus pretty much saying what I have been saying though I will say its a bit premature to judge but the early returns haven't been good.Throw the injuries in with many of our doubts about the current administrations history and still current or unknown abilities to make the right picks or develop them and it only exacerbates the concerns. Right now i like guys that others are concerned about like Rutherford and Sheets because I like their approach to hitting. Power will come or it won't but I do see productive hitters either way. Power will determine how productive. Need to see more of just about everyone else and Robert is either very unlucky or made of glass. Maybe needs some yoga or something to limber up the muscles and get in the right frame of mind. I hate getting all new agey about it but I'm out of ideas to help the current administration develop some good players. (not that anyone's listening)

Kevan Smith claimed off Waivers by Angels
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Sox Fan In Husker Land's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Smith was a good soldier. He did his job when called upon and did it well. I wish him the best. Will always remember the HR he hit wearing the special jersey's with Daniel Webbs name on it. https://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/white-sox/kevan-smith-honors-daniel-webb-style-players-weekend-home-run -
Robert is made of glass and at the rate he's going he's 3 years away if he makes it at all. Expecting Madrigal that soon is also unrealistic. Long way to go for both. When each of them has a successful AA season maybe then you can guess a year or 2 from that point.
