Yet despite all the huffing and puffing about it's the Sox so expect bad, the guy leading his men up that hill died on it because he didn't even put any real conviction into his own words. Didn't even trust his own opinion because he fully admitted he was on the fence about betting either the over or the under. You'd think that if most of your posts in this thread say "been there done that many times before" surely you must believe your own words otherwise what's the point of wallowing in the s%*#. It's pretty easy to take one side or the other on an over/under line especially when you're not betting it you're just taking your data points or your anecdotal evidence and picking a side. Fear of being wrong I suppose.

People think and say anything they want but until they start quoting actual posts as far as Im concerned it's just rumor mongering and gossip.

Waste of resources on a team that will be lucky to win 70 games next year or maybe with a good closer and setup man you win what 75-80 games if you, what's the saying ? Oh yea if you squint . Priorities will always be or always should be right now the development of starting position players and starting pitchers and only from the failed starting pitching do you see who you can develope into those RP. You cant scout you good cheap relief pitchers . How dontou do that ? Do you look for failures with good arms ? Wven great arms with great movement cannot succed unless they can command at the very least 2 quality pitches There is no such space for that to scout. Any pitcher you draft should be developed to be a SP. You dont draft relief pitchers unless its in late rounds but anyone drafted in late rounds the talent isn't there usually. If it was so easy and cheap wouldnt every GM in baseball know about this secret way to scout for good late inning relief pitchers and then they'd be in demand and not cheap. That's why at the trade deadline the very best RPs command a couple of decent prospects depending on how good they are and years before free agency. Plus it's the most inconsistent volatile position in baseball for a reason. Only established veteran arms can usually be counted on in the pressure cooker of pennant races and playoff games with some exceptions. Kopech did good with the Dodgers but back to his injured self this year.

Tell that to all the contending teams who had to go out and trade for arms at the TDL . Maybe you ought to start sending out your resume for GM to these teams like our other poster here who wanted JR to hire him.

Im sure you already have an answer for that and don't really want my opinion on it but the correct answer would be we traded most of the talented ones we had and we are in a rebuild and in that situation were still trading any talented relief pitcher we had by July 31st. Theres also not a lot of relief pitchers specifically drafted for that purpose. They come from starting pitchers who fail. That is still being sorted out . Do you think its necessary to have good relief pitching while you are in the beginning stages of a rebuild ? Asking for a friend . Im sure the fans of other teams who spent a lot more money than Reinsdorf allowed Getz to spend and with multiple years of contending under there belts ask the same question about their woeful bullpens too or did until some of them traded for better pitchers at the TDL.

I only would add although I have also been trumpeting the overall BP ERA being middle of the pack among all teams a lot of that has come in blowou losses and blow out wins like the 2 blowout wins before todays game. It has also come from long relief keeping games close in the middle innings. However ,they become league worst in late inning high leverage save situations. We all know that takes a certain mentality and skill level thats hit and miss ,but mostly miss, in just about every Sox relief pitcher . But again if you are rebuilding and want the best chance at the #1 pick you dont need a good BP and if you had one they wouldve been traded by now. All in all I'll take the number 1 pick and if some facet of the team has to suck to get us there then I'm good with it being the BP who are mostly expendable pitchers , rather than the hitting or starting pitching . The hitting wasnt performing either until after the All Star game and the Dtarting pitcher has pitched less innings than any team in MLB putting even more stress on a bunch of nobodies in the pen and making it harder for the manager to manage them. No team or manager looks good with untalented pitchers handling high leverage innings.

It's a problem if he never pitches any better than he is now in his 1st few months in the big leagues . As far as rookie performances have gone this year the Sox are doing pretty well. There are multiple year All Stars and HOF pitchers who weren't great from the get go.

What's a real reason ? Very few pitchers get into the 8th these days. Out of every starting pitcher who isnt an opener what percent of starters actually pitch into the 8th inning ? My guess is less than 5%. Now you could ask ok, how many pitchers throwing a one hitter through 7 innings throwing only 85 pitches in only their 2nd start after 4 months on the IL because of elbow inflamation due to a flexor tendon strain in his pitching arm, have pitched into the 8th inning Id have to say its at 0 % . But only because its a unique situation where today's thinking is not to stress out arms, especially arms that have been injured for 4 months. Sox can also retain Perez for next year by picking up his $10M option . The flexor tendon is the one that usually, if injured more seriously, results in Tommy John surgery. So if the Sox are trying to decide if Perez will be worth $10M next year they rather he not blow out his elbow.

If the Sox had paid for any good veteran BP arms that performed well wouldnt they have been traded at the deadline ? You know this yet ignore it. What makes you think building a good pen is so easy especially when JR cut player payroll ? Even teams who spend a lot money have pens they arent real happy with. Phillies BP was terrible, they picked up Duran to close. The downfall of the Orioles has a lot to do with their terrible BP. The Mets picked up a couple good BP arms also in Helsley & Rogers at the TDL to shore up their porous pen. The Yankees, Tigers and Dodgers also havent had good pens. Tell their fans how easy it is and compare how much money those teams spent in the off season compared to what Getz spent. BP performance is a crapshoot and even worse when you bring in a ton of expendable arms and refuse to put too many of the kid relievers in the pen because you dont want to trade too much of your youth until you know more about them.

This was a bad loss . Perez pitched great. Certainly making a case for his $10M option to be picked up. If it is picked up along with Robert's that's $30M worth of options. What did Getz spend last offseason . Was it around $30M for all the vets he signed ? I highly doubt JR allows much more than that , maybe another $20M .Don't think thats going to bring in very much. We'll have to see how the Robert saga plays out. All other attempts to trade him have not gone well. The LH power is going to have to come from Montgomery, Baldwin, And Teel and Quero in full 2nd seasons getting at least 10 HRs apiece. Maybe Baldwin can hit 15-20 and Montgomery 25-35.
