Alexander Canario

This SHOULD be a guy Getz and company should put a waiver claim on. You literally have nothing to lose. 24 year old former top 10-15 prospect in the Giants and Cubs organization. Thoughts?

62 days of service time and 24 years old catches my attention.  On a team full of flawed players, might as well get someone with any upside.

And I’d still rather play him that Taylor, Slater, and Jankowski haha

  • Can’t imagine doing victory laps about someone being bad when the current roster is hitting below .200 as a team.

Yes, although a few frequent posters ardently disagreed with me because he simply isn’t good enough for the Sox roster and we already have Tauchman (34) and Slater (32) that do squat for this team.  This kid is a full decade younger than our primary starting RF. 🤣  Would be hilarious if it actually happens now.

Your point stands — even if Canario sucks, “you literally have nothing to lose.”

Can't claim him...then we'd have to get rid of, slowly GASPS....Jankowski Taylor Tauchman Slater.

It would have to be someone on the 40-man roster so Jankowski wouldn’t apply as he’s just a NRI.  I also doubt Getz would want to cut any of Taylor, Tauchman, and Slater because he spend around $6 million combined on them —  chump change for real teams but too much to cut for the Sox.

But one of Colas or Fletcher would make sense, and I think we know which of the two the Sox don’t seem to care much for anymore.  At least Fletcher can play some defense in all three outfield spots if needed.

Have a feeling Jankowski will be activated for Tauchman IL...but that logically would happen AFTER the Canario claim, not before it.

OF Jose Azocar is also going to be available...fwiw.

I can see maybe getting excited about Canario.

I’m not a big believer that Canario will work out given his contact issues, but there’s no reason not to pick him up and use him as a platoon OF.

Against LHP:

  1. Slater, DH
  2. Robert, CF
  3. Benintendi, LF
  4. Vaughn, 1B
  5. Vargas, 3B
  6. Sosa, 2B
  7. Canario, RF
  8. Lee, CA
  9. Amaya, SS

Taylor would be the odd man out here, but so be it, I was never a big fan of his addition.  Obviously things could change when Tauchman & Rojas come back and whenever Teel, Quero, Meidroth, Montgomery, Ramos, etc. force the need for a roster spot, but we should have a window here to get a glimpse of what Canario is capable of without making other permanent roster decisions.

I'd be more interested in watching Canario at 24, than the veteran stiffs currently on the roster. We ain't winning anything this year, the marginal vets, one of them, can go elsewhere.

And if he has a good first half of the year you can flip him for a prospect.  Lol.

That's the only hope for most of our signings.and is usually a pipedream

With the injuries that have popped up, you can definitely add him and platoon him or just give him DH at bats. Who knows, by the time Tauchman is ready, there could possibly be another injury to the OF.

He'd be worth a shot as a platoon guy, and especially if they can stash him in AAA. His strikeout issues are gonna keep him from ever being more than a guy who runs into one every now and then, though.

They can't.

I was thinking they could put him on the MLB roster for a bit then send him down, but if that's not possible then he'd still be a nice shot to take as a bench/platoon corner OF while Tauchman is hurt, and who knows how hurt Benintendi's hand really is. Once trades start flowing he could start, assuming he hadn't been terrible.

In order to be sent to the minors he has to be put through waivers.    It's a crapshoot as to win the best time for that is.

First guy rumored to be on the cut list we could bring in that would be legit exciting imo. He has had mixed success as a minor league player but his tools and upside are undeniable. Why the heck did the cubs just give him away for JRs favorite return! Oh well could be our gain.

And for as much as we keep getting told how great this new development staff is, maybe we should actually put them to work on someone who isn't a soon to be 16 inch softball player.

Cubs needed a roster spot when they signed Justin Turner.  Still considered a questionable move.

Agreed. Bring him. At least give him the roster spot that Jankowski is about to get. He can platoon in the OF or just get some DH at bats.

I have no doubt Hahn would’ve nabbed Canario the first time he was DFA.  Let’s see if Getz wises up this time.  It’s not like the Sox have a glut of OF prospects, but we sure have a lot of crusty veterans…

You need a couple to play on your bench. I don't think I would have gone with both Taylor and Slater though. Probably just one.

Taylor makes sense since he can cover CF.  Slater fills the same role as Canario — righty corner outfielder that hits lefties.

He's a no brainer. We have injuries and that buys him some time to 'prove it'. If it doesn't work by the time the old geezers are healthy and ready, cut him.

Exactly. Also, does anyone know the severity of Tauchman’s injury? I never saw the news, just people post that he’s going to be out.

For real, Hahn loved him some prospects that lost their shine. They basically never worked out (except like, Eaton and McCann) but if Getz is making an uber-development staff, he should be going after these guys instead of building a a retirement home.
