  1. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 8, 2012 -> 08:59 PM) It's a good idea statistically, but will never be adopted. If they had the choice between skipping a start at home versus on the road, it would be pretty clear cut where he prefers to start, though. Statistically, who do you start in place of Sale on the road? It's a good idea relative to Sale's performance at home, but not a good idea relative to the REST of the potential starters. Sale needs to be 19-20 wins for the Sox to make the playoffs. There are 24 games left - he's got 4-5 more starts lefts, and the Sox need to win 4 of those games.
  2. Great! Who is our winningest pitcher on the road? Oh....Chris Sale. 7 wins on the road in the most. Second most wins is Phil Humber. Should we throw him out there in Sale's place?
  3. Reed doesn't like anything other than 1-run saves. He always makes it a 1-run game. That's the way he likes it.
  4. QUOTE (Lillian @ Sep 8, 2012 -> 05:46 PM) Maybe Reed can break his 17 game streak of consecutive appearances, without a "one, two three" inning. why would he do that?
  5. QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 8, 2012 -> 05:04 PM) He should stay out there for the 8th. definitely not. need him for tomorrow and the Tigers series
  6. Winston Salem putting on a show.
  7. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 5, 2012 -> 09:21 PM) Sounds like something a fan would write. It's not impossible for AJ to put up those numbers. A lot has to do with how other guys are hitting in the order. For all we know AJ might be suspended for something going on between him and an umpire or some unsportsmanlike infraction. Or gambling!
  8. Hard to believe just a few weeks ago that we would basically be begging for Gavin to come back quickly so we could get Quintana the hell out of the rotation.
  9. This game ain't over by any stretch of the imagination. Of course, neither is this inning.
  10. QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 07:51 PM) Can't win a WS with 1.5 starting pitchers I think you are overestimating.
  11. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 07:09 PM) I couldn't remember that far back but was it rare they were both in the lineup at the same time? I thought one or the other would go on the DL. They were in the lineup most of the time together. In 1997, Thomas played 146 games, Belle played 161. Thomas had an OPS of 1.067 and led the league in AVG. Belle had an .823 OPS (decent, but not what we expected when the Sox made him the highest paid player in the league). In 1998, Thomas played 160 games and Belle played 163 (tie game). Belle had an OPS of 1.055 and Thomas had an OPS of .861 - which was SHOCKINGLY low for him at the time (he hit only .265 and hit only 29 HR). Accordingly, there were only 15 or so games over two years where they both weren't in the lineup - about 5% of the games. And most of that was due to Thomas missing 16 games in 1997. Basically, they never put two great seasons together at the same time and Belle was gone in 1999 to the Orioles and out of baseball soon thereafter with injury. That was the disappointment. Also, this happened.
  12. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 06:01 PM) Hopefully Mitchell will play some winter ball. He needs more developmental time, considering he played football at LSU and that he missed an entire season with that ankle injury. I still have a difficult time projecting him as a big-league regular because of his high, high, high strikeout rate. hope he proves me wrong. I would have hoped Kenny Williams would have learned by now about drafting "raw" two sport athletes.
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 08:57 PM) Gordon Beckham still lives. Someone get a gif of Brian Blessed saying "Gordon's Alive??" from Flash Gordon.
  14. QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 06:11 PM) Sick burn, bro! So, the two playoff games from 2004/2005, plus the Friday game = Peavy is not a big game pitcher. So, the sample size went from 2 to 3. That's what you're banking on? other exhibits July 20 vs. Tigers Oct. 1, 2007 while Padres were just 1 game back
  15. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 05:47 PM) To be fair, Jake has spent a large portion of his career in an inferior league in a ballpark tailor-made for pitchers. To be fair, Jake Peavy turns into a quivering pile of Javy Vazquez when it's a big game. (12.10 career postseason ERA. .849 OPS against vs. the Tigers)
  16. QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 05:27 PM) Even those small sample size (like his good numbers) are those of a rotation staple. This is all at age 23...have to like some of the upside to improve, get smarter, etc. I've found that if you acknowledge the worst case possibility with pitchers, you'll never, ever feel good about your staff. You have to consider every possibility. Sale, Danks, Quintana is likely a very good start to a rotation for next season. Throw a Floyd, Peavy, Liriano, or someone else with a good track record and its pretty damn good. If not, KW can work his magic for us I can't name a lot of good starters with 1.473 WHIPs In fact, there are only 8 of the 94 starters who currently qualify for the ERA title who have higher WHIPs. Best of the bunch is probably Porcello. The thing is - he's not going to improve appreciably. He's a location-based lefty and we've had one of those. Mark Buehrle's best years were his age 22 and age 26 seasons. He didn't really "improve" over his age 22 season by any stretch. In fact, he's a model of consistency, not peaks. Obviously, if Quintana is 90% of Buehrle, he'll be in the rotation as long as he's cheap.
  17. QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 2, 2012 -> 04:59 PM) Sale is awesome, Quintana as well. Quintana has a 1.473 WHIP with a 4.31 ERA and a 1-2 record since the All Star Break. I hope it's just fatigue, but there is a pretty good chance that his first half performance was luck/aberration. Out of the blue success stories don't come around often for a reason. The only starter on this team I like is Chris Sale and he may have a high injury potential.
  18. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Sep 1, 2012 -> 10:46 PM) Courtney Hawkins hit his 1st homer in High A Winston Salem. #8 overall. Nice to see the ISO at .200 for an 18 year old...just wish he could walk more. Mix in another 10 walks, and I'm as excited as I've been about a Sox hitting prospect since Chris Young.
  19. QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 31, 2012 -> 10:12 PM) "We're not going to let the Dan Black campaign be dictated by fact-checkers." +1
  20. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 29, 2012 -> 09:35 PM) Tigers lose! Sox a season high 3 games up. They were up 3.5 games in July briefly but it's all good. Just keep winning, that's all. (But I seriously would not have guessed that the Sox could lose the first two against the Orioles and still have gained a half a game by Wednesday night. The Sox have gained 1/2 as much going 1-2 this week as they did going 6-0 last week).
  21. seems kind of silly to go through the rigamarole of a long delay before calling a game on a getaway day when the radar is showing showers for hours.
  22. Unless the Tigers adjust their rotation by skipping a starter on their August 27 off day, the Sox will miss Verlander in the first series. If they don't make any adjustments in the offdays they have after that series on September 6, he will also miss the second series. Or, if they don't skip, he will have to pitch on 3 day's rest. I can't imagine that Leyland is that dumb not to get Verlander into each series. He has been beyond dominant against the White Sox.
  23. Can't imagine what would go wrong with a rookie pitcher 109 pitches into a late August game.
  24. QUOTE (Cali @ Aug 19, 2012 -> 02:40 PM) I don't know about you guys but if they miss the playoffs after having been in 1st for the majority of the year, I will consider it a disaster not to make the playoffs. Cause this team ain't gonna look the same in 2013. Go for it now. FYI, I looked this up a while ago. The 1967 White Sox were the team that was in first place the longest without going to the playoffs (that year, obviously, it would have been the World Series). They were in first place for 91 days. There downfall was going 0-5 to end the season...against the two worst teams in the league, Kansas City and Washington. The 2012 White Sox are now at 89 days in first (counting today).
  25. Has anyone said "Corpseball!" yet. Either that or Guthrie just figured out how to pitch in his last start against the White Sox and is now Walter Johnson II.
