  1. You gotta remember that kids throw less all through life now. Coddling just doesn't start in te bigs. Instead of pitching in a sandlot all day, they can throw 5-7 innings a weeek max in little league. It's a lifetime style change.
  2. I actually don't have a problem with that play, it's hard-nosed baseball. LEt's not get caried away and call Torri Hunter a mediocre player. Give credit where it is due.
  3. You can't expect columnists to not have feelings for teams. If the Tribune hired you tomorrow, your reporting better be objective-but you wouldn't become a robot all of the sudden. I'm sure over time, love for particular teams evaportaes though as you are in the business.
  4. Maybe by average stuff, he means the stuff of a #3-4 starter. While everyone in the bigs has a #1 starter on Opening Day, the BA definition leads to only about 15 or so. This definition excludes really good pitchers like Mark Buehrle and BRad Radke and favors guys like Beckett and Penny. Perhaps this is the sort of thing he meant.
  5. Tom Hanks? I am alomst positve he's a professed A's fan. He was in their piece for HBO on Bay sports in the 70's
  6. Well I think that Ugie is going to be upsetif he's not the closer. I think he has to wind up a Cub, no matter how sold they are on Ryan Dempster.
  7. Look out for the marlins as a sleeper team on Maggs. If they don't end up with delgado, I could see them benching or turfing encarnacion in favor of maggs. They saw a hole in the market two years ago with Pudge, maybe they will see one now with magglio. I year 8-10 sounds about right.
  8. Yeah when I had Griff, Helton or Jimmy Edmonds-I hit about one or two homers on my own. It was just brutal.
  9. How about to the Ravens for two number ones? The Vikes could use one of the number ones and their second rounder to move up and take Edwards or WIlliams. Then they can use their other first-rounder on D. Then next year, they can use both of their #1's on D or however they see fit. I honestly don't think there is any controlling Moss. He's not as hard of a worker or player as TO. Moss is a coach-killer who has no carrot in front of him. He already got paid, he won't care what Ray Lewis says.
  10. you guys should check out the tug mcgraw bands, I think it was for brain cancer or brain tumors. I can't recall. I do know that the band was baseball leather with stitching. It was very cool looking and for a nice cause.
  11. yeah pauilie really isn't a good enough hitter to bat third, especially given his speed. However, the Oakland fans call Jermaine "Double-Play Dye" so he's rpbably not suited for there either. Maybe Row should go there until frank returns. QUOTE(Beastly @ Jan 15, 2005 -> 05:09 PM) I know Steff did... But you know, it was a Kenny Williams love fest! Everyone for the most part really loved Kenny! Saw Aboz too...but we know how he feels about me...
  12. I'd be in favor of releasing him if he pulls crap like that. It is unacceptable. It's a new start though and his slate is semi-clean. He has a lot of work to do to win over his teammates.
  13. THey're probably on that 7 second delay. Next time if anyone calls into Bruce Levine's Hot Stove thing, it might be a nice idea
  14. I think we have to look in the mirror. Frank Thomas is a national afterthought because he is underappreciated by Sox fans in general. He can be a bit of a kuncklehead when he opens his mouth, but he's not a bad guy and he's been a HOF hitter for us. I'd like to see more #35 jerseys around town. I think that people turfed Frank in favor of Magglio and it was a bit disrespectful to the Big Hurt. I'd like for 2005 to be the year of reembracing the big man.
  15. would mvp or the score object to you identifying yourself with a call-in question as "dave from soxtalk.com"? Would they allow the plug?
  16. Not sure if anyone pointed this out in the thread, but Shingo has Paul Konerko to understand him
  17. You may be right qwerty on the numbers. It's hard thing to do in this league, to hit 30 bombs. We'll see. THis might seem contradictory for me to say, but I'd probably hit Rowand 2 if we don't get the Gooch. I don't like hitting him there, but Wllie and Uribe are worse options. We just don't hat a 2-hole hitter. I guess this is better than a month ago when we didn't have that AND a leadoff hitter. Does anyone know enough about AJ's ability to bunt, hit the other way to suggest he could handle that spot? It's not ideal to have a your 2 guy only playh 80& of trhe games, but is he an option?
  18. I really don't think Rowand cna hit in the two spot. We've gone over this before and I still don't get it. I know I like him a lot less than others but I would think even the Rownad supporters would look at his lack of hitting to right as a bad sign for the two-spot. As for the star moniker, what evidence is there that this is going to happen? I just don't see him as a guy that can hit any better than he did a year ago. Not enough pop in his bat to do much better.
  19. I guess if you are going in a group of 3 or 5, the best hting to do is just split the cost 5 ways, instead of each person buying hteir own ticket. THis kind of sucks, but what can you do
  20. I don't know the answer to this but is Beltran's money deferred with or without interest and over what time period.?
  21. sosh is like the hulk hogan of baseball message boards. They've got the rep others want
  22. I'm a big Hawk guy although I am sure the Billy Beane/Moneyball guys cna't stand the series against the A's and the Blue Jays. Hawk comes down pretty hard on the Sox at times to be fair. Also, either Dj has made improvements or we just get used to him.
  23. I think he has another 200 walks, 40 bombs. I don't believe he was on steroids in 04 and he looked mighty good. I imagine (maybe only in ST) that a couple of pitchers might try to challenge him just to see what's there.
  24. Most people here probably know, but it's worth reiterating: Arbitration is non-negotiable. If a player wants 8 and the team wants 1, the arbitrator can't just pick 5 if that's what he thinks. The arbitrator has to choose amongst the two figures. I think you are right about Gagne losing his case last year.
