Steve Phillips Press Conference
Punch and Judy Garland replied to Jimbo's Drinker's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 7, 2005 -> 05:10 PM) That was a REALLY lame segment. It was just plain BAD to watch. ESPN is no longer the World Wide leader in sports. THey used to be, but have been falling for some time and that topped it off. Bring on Comcast Sportsnet!!! Lets not get ahead of ourselves. Comcast is pretty sucky -
Iguchi finishes 4th in AL ROY voting
Punch and Judy Garland replied to Frank the Tank 35's topic in Pale Hose Talk
A 1.39 whip is not that terrible. Not great, but not downright terrible. You have to understand that a guy who throws that many innings is very valuable. Edit-In the last 25 years, the only guy to win the ROY that threw 200 innings was Dwight Gooden. Most guys who won, and there have only been a few-most of which are NL guys-threw 30-50 innings less than Chacin. -
Iguchi finishes 4th in AL ROY voting
Punch and Judy Garland replied to Frank the Tank 35's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I think Japanese players are unfairly discriminated against during the ROY voting because of maverick voters. That said, Iguchi was very good but wasn't really better than the other guys so I have no problem with Cano, Gomes, and Street ahead of him. I do have a gripe with Chacin. There is an extremely unfair bias against starting pitchers, even more so than Japanese players. For some reason, and it makes no sense, hitters aren't judged by MVP standards as rookies but pitchers are judged on CY standards. What I mean by that is that 280-15-80 numbers are s***ty for an MVP, but pretty solid for a ROY candidate. However, when a pitcher wins 13-14 games as a rookie with an era around 4, he was terrific but gets very little credit for having done so as a rookie. I think Chacin didn't get enough credit from the voters or the analysts this season -
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 7, 2005 -> 07:05 AM) For the 1st few months, I can really see myself saying after a loss,"well, they did win the World Series....." but thats going to get old at some point. By June, yes, I will be living and dying by every pitch again. Exactly. I fully expect Fire Kenny, Sell the team Jerry, trade Contreras, add Griffey and so many other shouts to be belted again. There is nothing wrong with that is what the heat of the season is all about. Perspective is for these cold months.

I think its probably more gratifying ( or at least it would seem more real) to win it all with expectations. The expectations of third place are a big reason why some of us (me included) are struggling to believe it happened. I think goign in with high hopes and seeing them realized would be very special. Maybe it wouldn't be as exhilarating but we might want it just bad enough because we wouldn't have that part of us waiting for the other show to drop

Thomas Jones Injury
Punch and Judy Garland replied to NUKE_CLEVELAND's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
well we learned a few weeks ago that even when he looks like he'll miss time, he works his way back in. If its possible to play, he will -
If you could choose one player for 2006...
Punch and Judy Garland replied to santo=dorf's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I would no doubt be happy with any of these. Can't go wrong with those choices -
Yeah I'm facing Brooks so that INT reduction was much appreciated!

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 6, 2005 -> 04:58 PM) So it's safe to say Grossman will be starting when he comes back? Depends on the W's. As bad as Orton is today, he keeps winning. If they are in first place later I don't think they'll bench him. We'll see

When a guy is known as Curveball, shouldn't you expect him not to be straightforward???????? -
Games like this are what keeps one from being excited about the Bears in January.

Sox exercise buyout on Thomas' contract
Punch and Judy Garland replied to Steff's topic in Pale Hose Talk
where do we play our home games Frank? Jermaine friggin Dye socked 31 here. Look at AJ's year compared to his career HR totals. He would hit 30 plus here with ease (plus get on base at a 425 clip) -

QUOTE(beck72 @ Nov 5, 2005 -> 07:12 PM) Interesting that Giles home and away splits for HR's are pretty even. From 2002-2004, [the first two years in Pitt], Giles hit 28 Hr's in 800 ab's at home, while hitting 30 hr's in 846 ab's on the road. This last yr, he hit 6 hr's in 266 ab's at home. and 9 hr's in 279 ab's on the road. If Petco was the sole reason for his drop off, you'd expect a larger discrepancy. Personally, I go by both a dropoff in numbers and a grown man reverting back to his previous life form as a possible past steroid user. Nothing about his stats make me think any different you also have no facts which makes you irresponsible. That means you have no credibility (ouch, using a Mariotti line) -
QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Nov 5, 2005 -> 03:44 PM) Yeah I can't wait until those Wheaties boxes come out. But I will admit I was dissapointed in seeing Manning and Brady on the cover of this weeks Sports Illustrated. The Wheaties boxes, not on sale yet to the public, are goign for over $20 on the bay. I think its kinnd of foolish because there will be thousands of them in a few weeks. Its gonna be a must-own collectible.

QuotATION of the Flippin' Century
Punch and Judy Garland replied to kapkomet's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I agree with you on Walker but not Owens. There was a real difference there. Manager/coach contracts are sort of meaningless in that they usually don't guarantee that a guy will come back. There are examples of cheap owners who don't want to pay a guy not to coach but its usually not the case -
Plus we got the wheaties boxes on the way and you gotta buy a few of those. I'll get at least two. One for display and the other one to hopefully get signed by Marky sometime

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 5, 2005 -> 12:19 PM) If a 148 OPS+ from last year is comming down to earth, I wish more players would do the same. It's funny how Brian Giles' power numbers dropped midseason in '03 when he was traded to San Diego. You get Brian Giles out of Petco and he goes back to his 30+ HR self. I bet Giles ends up in the midwest. He will not stay on the coast. He will be a Cub or Cardinal in my opinion -
If its just this weekend and he was going to miss anyways (not sure how likely it was he'd play) then this is a non-story. If this is a Keyshawn situation, then this is a big deal. I doubt that though, they need him to make the playoffs in all likelihood. For all of his baggage and garbage, I'm a bit surprised this is the straw that broke the camel's back. Had he not done that phony press conference, I would have expected a suspension. Once he "apologized", I figured that was the end of the story. I never thought he'd play another down for the Eagles before the season. Its debatable how many downs he has left for the Eagles but surely he wo't play for them in 06

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 08:31 PM) Philly cannot make any Thome deals without getting pitching. Very simple. If they're paying most of his contract, they must get pitching in return. Perhaps. But then its a question of who. If you go by the teams I listed (not that you have to), there aren't a ton of appealing options. I don't think that Boston would depart with Sanchez or Papelbon, the Mariners don't seem like a fit for pitching, and the White Sox won't part with B-Mac (I don't think) or the Fab Four for Thome. The Phillies need bullpen help with Urbina and Wagner leaving. Perhaps they go after Ryan, Hoffman, or Dotel-but they will likely look to deal for some as well. I think a Hunter/reliever combo might make some sense given that they are the ones that need to purge themselves in this scenario

well its a nice statement and all but he said something a few weeks ago about how now its time to get paid. I don't begrudge him either way but you must keep in mind Ozzies-double talk here
