Draft Pick Compensation for Signing Qualified-Offer FAs
bmags replied to bmags's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Sarava @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 09:17 PM) Out of curiosity, is there a date where draft pick compensation no longer applies? Like opening day or May 1st, etc. ....? Pretty sure it’s after the draft when the protection is removed, big part of the season. -
Farquhar working with Giolito (analytically and stuff)

Just makes me love baseball. So many ways to succeed, especially in pitching. Farquhar telling Gio to drop 2 seamer, teams like pirates relied on it exclusively at one point. -

Yeah posted this in the fangraphs thread. Maybe my favorite Sox article on pitching ever. -
QUOTE (oldsox @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 05:32 PM) Where was Burger? Wasn’t in top 100

Bears had most $ committed to Guard in the league and were only getting average play. means that money has to count elsewhere, and not just buying crappy depth.

To hopefully help with this and not have it buried in a thread, I just created a new one with links outlining: http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=104763

Bears decline Sitton.

https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-qualifying-off...ned/c-259650658 Because the White Sox were neither a luxury tax penalized team, nor a revenue sharing team, the following would apply to any FAs the white sox sign that declined a qualifying offer: The 50 million compensation threshold affects the team that extended the qualifying offer and lost the player, not the signing team.

We are in a golden age of sox media. This piece by Fegan on Farquhar and Giolito taught me a lot, and focuses a lot on what works for Giolito. (subscriber only) https://www.theathletic.com/246514/2018/02/...-lucas-giolito/

I'm going to back out of this gain. One thing about our position player pipeline is aside from Robert (Moncada aside), few are plus defensive guys. A lot of "mlb bat, find a position" type players. Tim is hopefully a plus SS. I believe Moncada can become one. I would really like our 3b to also be shut down, and let our OF be whatever we need offensively. I hope we don't need to pay for offense until we know we need to.

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 01:52 PM) Seems like if it's That's only for what the teams receive, the signing team gives up a 2nd.

In some ways I can seem him undervalued (would you rather Donaldson in age 33-38 seasons or Moustakas from 28-33?) and worth it, but gut is don't sign him. I'm with Y2Jimmy that this is more noise, and that nothing this offseason indicates we will sign him. That said, we seem to ask on every guy. We clearly have a number for Moustakas in which we would sign. Whether that number is offered in good faith that we would negotiate it upward? I don't know.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 11:45 AM) The other problem with this "solution" is that it only looks at school shootings. How many mass shootings have we had that have taken place at somewhere other than a school? Movie theaters, concerts, colleges (not sure if they are counted in school shootings), shopping malls, businesses ect... Are we just supposed to have armed security and metal detectors at every single place where a lot of people gather at the same time just in case someone decides to run in and start shooting people? We are what, 3.5 months removed from 500 people being shot in las vegas? "Maybe we'll consider regulating bump stocks, not banning, ehhh actually no, we'll just keep them as is."

You are missing the point that I have no idea why that is interesting or that I should care. Mitt Romney is pandering to the worst excesses of base voters? Couldn't have guessed.
-
I think people have come to grips with how bad the rotation could be, but I'm not sure I've reckoned with how bad the lineup could be.
-
No, i'd say "staaahp" the cynical worldview that elevates political motivations above all else. Pandering to Trump doesn't make him "smart" above all else, it makes him shameless. Romney was very passionate about how Trump was not just a bad candidate, but dangerous for the United States, and protecting the United States was important for Mitt. Now, Mitt is very proud to receive Trumps endorsement, because his aspirations are more important than the country. The framing that any move, no matter how shameless or horrible, is inherently good if it is to get votes is just so hacky. I don't care if Mitt Romney gets elected, he will be as terrible as Bob Corker or Paul Ryan or any other "respectable" Republican, he will be selfish. He will be useless.
-
He didn't have to run, or he could have run with integrity and faced losing. Remember how many Republicans in Utah were going to vote for Evan McMullin and how many actually did? Push comes to shove those voters aligned with trump would have voted for Romney over some devil worshipping democrat.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 09:35 AM) The Sox are still under the caps for July 2, 2018, so the fun will be limited. Yeah that's a typo, meant to say "isn't going to be too much fun"

QUOTE (Tony @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 09:20 AM) I think we are going to see a very up and down season from Giolito. He seemed to be built back up from scratch last season and showed some positive flashes. If he can build on that in 2018, that's a huge positive and I expect some bumps along the way and he settles into consistent mechanics. I actually believe him that the ball being different in MLB caused problems with his curve. And I'm hoping the offseason of him playing with the grips means he gets it back. As we saw in playoffs, pounding zone with a good curveball (not what he had last year) is super helpful. And of course I believe he has one in him.

To me, only Ives are painful. Even Rauner's are fine. I mean, that Blagojevich audio kinda writes itself. Surprised Biss is 3rd. I'm not that surprised Kennedy has a following. Aside from name, his whole thing is being untethered from the democratic machine. It's a good play, he's just a curmudgeon with no real action beyond that.

Yeah I haven't seen polling but I figured JB with wrapping up every single endorsement was clear lead.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 09:04 AM) The bullpen actually doesn’t look to be as much of a dumpster fire as I expected. Obviously not a great group, but I don’t think they’ll be a huge liability either. We have many more arms to try out in Bullpen than rotation and I'm glad we have some roles set already. I'm probably too high on Minaya which may not be rewarded, but he was thrown in last year in situation after situation with no fire escape. He just had to deal with it. And I thought he did well, and makes me think if he's in roles where he can be optimized for his strengths he could be pretty good.

I can't make heads or tails of this IL Gov Dem primary. i am not going to vote for JB Pritzker. Policies or not, I just can't flatter someone who is just a rich kid that liked using it to hang out with powerful people, then gets confused and thinks that he's done something with his life and is important. The pritzkers do a lot of good for Illinois, illinois gives a s*** ton of preferences to pritzker business, they already run things they don't need to run things. So Biss. But I hate Mike Madigan, and the dropping of his Lt Gov showed such obvious political grandstanding from both sides. So Kennedy, haha no not Kennedy. s***. So Biss. effing Illinois.

QUOTE (GermanSock @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 02:55 AM) enjoy https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-white-s...ld-be-anything/ Yeah and Harry Pavlidis from BP in his Soxmachine podcast interview said the same. As a fan, it's easy to pant a rosier picture, but I also get there could be some disasters either in stop gap vets like Shields and MiGo, or poor performance from Giolito Lopes and most likely Fulmer. But, I do think becoming a big league pitcher is hard, and I won't be fatalistic if Giolito has a poor year if I see signs of him figuring it out. He could find his curveball and be Rich Hill. He could find a slider and have a workable 3 pitch repertoire. He has options to find to make a good pitcher if phase one doesn't work.
