2018 MiLB White Sox news and notes
QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Feb 19, 2018 -> 10:21 AM) That would be awesome to see if he knows anything about them. Also maybe ask about Camilo Quinteiro who is older but I still can't find any info on besides that we signed him back in September. I highly doubt any of these guys amount to anything, but I like keeping tabs on who we got in the lower levels of the system. Even stuff like if they came from a showcase. Sox are linked to one guy for 2018 from a recent VZ showcase, 16 year old SS. J2 is going to be too much fun so will be interesting if there are any stories, like maybe a guy that tried out as a position player but sox signed them as a pitcher.

Jake Burger
QUOTE (Dunt @ Feb 19, 2018 -> 09:51 AM) It is just BP, but he looks like he is absolutely murdering the ball already Are you in AZ?

Jake Burger
Simply put, a must read on Burger for subscribers to Athletic: https://theathletic.com//244928/2018/02/19/...t/?redirected=1 Bulk of article is how he has stayed in arizona, but goes really in depth on what it means for him to focus on launch angle (they have focused on timing, not big swing changes).

QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Feb 18, 2018 -> 11:32 PM) If anyone was wondering what we did with our remaining international money, we have signed 5 guys since the beginning of February that I think are all international amateurs. Jose Rodriguez SS 16 years old Johnabiell Laureano CF 17 years old Francisco Benitez RHP 17 years old Luis Rodriguez RHP 17 years old Jesus Rondon RHP 18 years old How'd you figure this out? edit: nvm looks like you scoured our transactions, pretty cool. Maybe I can get a question on these guys in a badler chat sometime.

2018 MLB Draft Order
This is a good draft to be the Royals in, would be interesting if they hedge and try to get some close to majors pitchers to supplement soon. Doubt it. WOuld be nice for us.

Love the rebuild, despise this attitude
I’d avoid getting mad at anyone going through a translator.

Trying to imagine how I’d feel if the first White Sox $100+ mill contract went to Hosmer...ha I can’t!

QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 17, 2018 -> 10:24 AM) Chuck and Guff have done an amazing job covering the rebuild over the last year. The Kopech podcast was great. I wonder if they will do another Cornerstones show this season. His podcast is refreshingly positive without homerism. Just people who sound like they love what they do.

**President Trump 2018 Thread**
I think if Facebook is going to make the claim of being "your online identity" and the rise of influencer marketing, we are at the stage where some regulation is in order. It was good in the 90s they were lenient on regulating the internet, but the same ideas from how the FTC regulates advertising need to start to be applied to things like fake accounts and for it to work the platform needs to be liable.

BP 101 lists 8 White Sox Prospects
BP released their fantasy focused top 101 and it's a pretty funny read: https://www.baseballprospectus.com/fantasy/...prospects-list/ List is reordered mainly by putting a whole lot more position players. Cease and Burger make back half, Jimenez/Kopech/Robert/Hansen front half.

Mlb.com top prospects
It wasn't that much but you'd hope they do better. It is interesting going through our signings, it definitely seems like the white sox prioritized power in INTL FA but the hit tools have rarely come around. As CWS as pointed out, too many have also been transitioned to corners immediately. I would like them to target some heady baseball players with great athletic skills and see if power comes than this approach.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Feb 16, 2018 -> 10:32 AM) Okay, tell me the amount of the bonus we gave Tatis. 825k, almost half of their top signing that class, Franklin Reyes, who was paid 1.5 million. Adolfo was our highest non-robert signing in the newer structure at 1.6 million.

Why is WAR valued linearly?
So couple thoughts: I don't think people are paying on a linear $/WAR basis. I think that number is largely shorthand and also recall it is backed into, it's an average. Two examples: Wellington Castillo was worth 2.1 WAR last year at a scarce position. Making 8mill/year. That's only 4 mill/WAR, half the 8. Cashner just got the same deal. K, probably unlikely to get the 4 bWAR season again, honestly he's likely to get 0, but he got 8 million. Darvish, let's pencil him in for 3 WAR and say last year was aberration. He is getting 7 mill / WAR. Lorenzo Cain! Okay so maybe project less than 5 WAR, let's go 4. He's getting? $4 mill/WAR. So anyway my point is, I agree that the "surplus value" stuff for trades is frivilous because it's based on a backed into number that isn't that illustrative. But it's a model and there is some consistency, so it's better than nothing. However, I also just brought up the above because I don't think teams actually do use $/WAR linearly. And I think pitchers and position players are valued different on a $/WAR basis. In heart of hearts, I see pitchers viewed closer to 6-7 mill /WAR and position players $4 mil/WAR, with hitters seeing that escalator when you hit a predictive 3 WAR and above. Maybe they are predicting both Castillo and Cashner are 1 WAR players in each year, and thus their contract, but I doubt it. Now, Carlos Santana got 20 mill a year, and is a more likely 3.5 WAR player. He got 5.7 mill/WAR. Incremental improvement. Darvish

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 16, 2018 -> 09:39 AM) From the skillset that is talked about, the name Jackie Bradley Jr comes to mind. No idea what he actually looks like though. Another is Andrew McCutcheon with better defense. 2016 Jackie Bradley jr is my ideal scenario yes.

2018 MLB Draft
Good point. I could be sold on taking college player at lower price and then getting a 2nd and 3rd rounder for HS. But recently every college player we think will be a discount is full slot or over (ala Sheets)

comps are so silly. All you are going to get for Hansen is some major leaguer that's really tall, Jimenez a big power hitter, Kopech someone that throws hard, and Dunning somebody that wears glasses. Nobody knows what Robert really looks like yet on this board at least. But he'll probably get comped to a Cuban.

Mizzou is doing well which means basketball is about to end: https://sports.yahoo.com/sources-college-ho...-224417174.html To be quite honest, feels like things will just change to make the behavior more regulated. It won't stop.

Avi wins ARB case
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 10:08 AM) If Yolmers agent was asking for a higher number than means they were closer than $250k in negotiations. That makes it worse, as they weren't $250k apart, maybe they were $100k or $150k. Hahn is possibly lying, but what you are implying is not what it seems like: "“Not one iota,” Hahn said when asked if there had been a shift, before suggesting it was the approach of Sanchez and Garcia's agents that may have changed. “We negotiated these deals the exact same way we've negotiated, I don't know, 70-plus of these things going back over the last 17 years we've settled. This year, for whatever reason when we were dealing with these agents, we didn't receive offers that even looked like their filing numbers. So, you wind up in a hearing room.” The implication from Hahn's statement is that Sanchez and Garcia's agents asked for figures significantly above what they wound up filing at, which could also be read as them lowering their ask from negotiation in order to increase their odds of winning in court."

Avi wins ARB case
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 09:42 AM) So that means the gap was even narrowing than $250k for Yolmer? That makes it worse, not better in his case. No, it means when they were negotiating Yolmer's agent was giving them a higher number, then they went with a lower number to the arbitrator that they thought could win.

Financial News
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 14, 2018 -> 10:03 AM) IN reaction to that, building increased and thousands of new units will be released causing both demand and pricing to fall. That's not a bubble though, that's responding to demand. We shouldn't manufacture housing shortages to boost up prices.

2018 MLB Draft
"The class looks strong right now, the deepest overall since 2011, although the upper tier is less certain right now and heavier on the high school talent some teams have shied away from in recent drafts." I have to keep reminding myself this. Every poor write-up I shake my fist at the sky.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Feb 14, 2018 -> 04:51 PM) Yeah, Robertson's workload is a problem, but also Geist just isn't a very strong ballhandler. I'm also terrified for next year because Barnett and Robertson will be gone. Gonna need to find some 3-point shooters to survive in Cuonzo's system. Might be a return to mediocrity next year, although Jontay/Tilmon inside could be dominant as they continue to improve. I'm not that concerned about Robertson. He was a horse at Cannisius too, is a senior, and is playing only 2 games a week. Next year will be a lot different though. From what it sounds like players like kj santos should be able to shoot the three. I haven't heard watson is bad from 3 but you never now, but hopefully he can drive, since we don't have any wing that goes to the rim. If they have Jontay and Tilmon not getting in foul trouble, and an offense that goes through JOntay, could be good. Worth remembering that this team has made a near 200 spot jump in kenpom's offensive ratings under Cuonzo and Cornell mann. They get stagnant but this is not the same offense he was running at cal.
