QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 10, 2017 -> 09:26 AM) I kind of wonder if some of the Brewers noise is a leak to put pressure on the Cubs to overpay for one of the starters on the market. It helps the Brewers because it weakens the Cubs depth when the Brewers window is open and helps the Sox/A's pull in a larger return. Yeah that's a good point. I do think Brewers will supplement to some degree but I'd just be surprised if they spent big at this point.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 10, 2017 -> 09:14 AM) There is literally nothing else on twitter out there. It just seems weird, given how closely Charlotte is watched by our beat reporters esp. for our top prospects, that none of them would say anything about this.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 7, 2017 -> 05:10 PM) Not really. Bradley would help Bulls win games this year and needs a huge contract next offseason. Pass. You get a pick for taking him and could easily trade him for more assets at deadline. This team will be absolutely brutal scoring the ball, I don't see Avery Bradley changing that. -
I haven't seen any actual team, prospect or beat reporters report anything on this. Just the random chatter.

QUOTE (Jimmy3Putt @ Jul 8, 2017 -> 08:24 AM) I think the purpose for Robert to stay in the DR was to save HIM in taxes not the Sox. Next year his bonus isn't taxable income just his yearly salary, so he can come over. Correct. But I would imagine we won't see a long post ripping Robert for trying to maximize his earnings after being dirt poor.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 7, 2017 -> 04:22 PM) I think it's pretty ridiculous that Hansen & Dunning didn't make the list. Hell, I think it's absurd that Collins didn't make the list, but I can at least somewhat get the logic there. Hansen & Dunning have both been amongst the best pitchers in their draft class and also have high enough ceilings (especially Hansen) to warrant spots in the 75 to 100 range. I think you'll see them make the list if they are doing what they are doing now in AA. They are college pitchers that have been brought along fairly slowly.

I think Giants will sell Melancon for sure.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 7, 2017 -> 09:58 AM) This is the type of deal the Bulls should be making - taking a salary dump. But the Bulls never take that kind of deal. It's amazing for the Pistons to add Bradley for nothing. I hate the f***ing Bulls. It's embarrassing. -
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jul 7, 2017 -> 09:54 AM) Sort of shocked to see no Robert on either of this last 2 lists, especially the top 100. I think people just don't know here to put him. I'm not that surprised. Badler has said a lot he focuses only on the INTL guys pre-signing, so the rankers would be trying to fit int hat opinion with their own without having seen him in person (unlike draft picks).

I'm getting a twinge of FOMO with Kyle Lewis and Blake Rutherford.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 7, 2017 -> 09:35 AM) Quintana makes a whole of sense for just about any team. Not only are you getting a front line pitcher, you are getting one who is young, affordable, and signed for a number of years. If a team is going to buy big, he is a guy to do it for. The problem is of the "chasers" only Colorado has a good farm system, and I really don't like the fit of Quintana in Colorado.

Big drops for Giolito, Moniak, Newman and Martes. Big rise for Florial, Acuna, Buehler, Quantrill. White sox with only 2 in top 20 and 4 in top 100. Burger not in list, Faedo at 51.

Here's my guess: Group 1: It starts with a team like Colorado, AZ or KC making a big move to shore up top wild card contender status. Big doesn't necessarily mean top known targets, but maybe a known-vet name coming off of one of the disappointing teams Group 2: Teams like Yankees/Red Sox/Astros/Nationals wait until the absolute deadline to see if supply opens up. Group 3: Some of the rebuilding/not there yet teams trade some mlb for mlb players based on positional need. Names for group 1: Ian Kinsler McCutcheon Lucroy Carlos Gomez Samardjiza Frazier Bullpen Names for Group 2: Cueto Quintana Gray JD Martinez Donaldson Archer Cole Bullpen Darvish? Group 3: No idea.

QUOTE (Buehrlesque @ Jul 7, 2017 -> 08:18 AM) Anybody know the reports on this guy? I know he's hitting well in A ball right now, but how's his glove? Will he stick at SS? Would he be an above-average 3B? This was Longenhagen's profile before his bat exploded this year. Sees 3rd.: "Scouting Report Though he was drafted as a shortstop and took 100% of his reps in the GCL at shortstop after signing, I have Kieboom projected to third base. He was a fringe runner as an amateur and was posting below-average times from home to first during instructional league, where he was also taking reps at third. I just don’t expect the range necessary for shortstop to be there at maturity, though he has left-side arm strength and should be fine at the hot corner. Offensively, Kieboom’s value is largely tied to his bat-to-ball skills. He has smooth, comfortable stroke, average bat speed and tracks pitches well. He projects for average raw power at maturity. I think the approach to hitting, which is more geared for gap-to-gap contact, will limit the game-power output. It’s not an awe-inspiring offensive profile at third base, but an above-average hitter with fringe-average game power and solid defense there is still an above-average everyday player. I think that’s Kieboom’s ceiling." http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/top-20-pros...gton-nationals/

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 5, 2017 -> 05:27 PM) Yes...I've been saying for a while that the strikeout will be the death of baseball. Lots of people on this board thing it is an absurd statement, but 30% of at bats ending in two things that cause very little actual action / excitement is insane. I should point out, strikeouts with a bunch of runners on can actually be exciting (depending on the situation). But strikeouts / walks happening that often is a lot of time where nothing happens. Maybe there are things changing. Astros seemed to think the lack of contact was in fact reducing their runs scored and got rid of decent but high K players like Castro and Rasmus and replaced with McCann and Beltran, and are now a juggernaut offense. Between that and royals teams may care more about it. But your point was really driven home to me when I was watching some Jimmy Piersall called games on youtube. The pitches are coming so fast, there was constantly something going on and the announcers suddenly had 3-4 minutes long dead air as opposed to 30-40 now. If we speed up pitches, pitchers are saying it would lower velocity. It seemed like it would all work out except the pitch clock in the minors has suddenly stopped doing much. Not sure how mlb solves this.

Man look at that white sox lineup just one year removed from being a really good offensive team.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 6, 2017 -> 10:22 PM) Adams was very good. Yeah I shouldn't have wrote that when they were only in the third. It was a very good night for Birmingham. Rarely do you see multiple multi-hit games from them. Charlotte and W-S both scored quite a few runs but nobody had that pretty of a box score, except for Saladino's 3 run home run.
-
6 runs in an inning for Birmingham. Kinda a ho hum night except for Adolfo

This whole thing took way too f'ing long but I appreciate those that realized getting it done was worth it after 2 years. Real compromises and hard decisions were made.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 6, 2017 -> 04:26 PM) What do people really think can done? The first nuke was used over 70 years ago. There is no way to put nukes back into the box, and nukes are "old" technology at this point. There is no way to "stop" NK without risking some sort of nuclear assault. In my opinion the best answer is to start using some defense funds to try and come up with new technology that can better detect nuclear weapons (and their movement.) In the absence of that, it really is up to China, SK and Japan to decide. NK really poses no threat to us, so those countries need to decide if they are willing to risk their population being nuked. True but with that last sentence, China will not let Japan be the aggressor or a military power again. China would have to be cool with whatever comes of North Korea being aligned with China and not "the west" or SK/J. It makes it complicated, and all roads point back to China.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 6, 2017 -> 03:50 PM) Depends on your economic analysis of how sustainable $20 trillion in debt is as we keep on adding to it by not coming close to balanced budgets...even after the initial 2-3 year stimulus package and QE bursts and low interest rates for an extended period of time. In the same sentence that we should freak about our high debt is ... low interest rates. Sure.

It would be very hard to bankrupt US with a war unless the outcome is China winning and putting onerous requirements on US.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 6, 2017 -> 03:22 PM) In terms of per capita spending, Illinois is 37th. In recent surveys, most Illinoisans want the problem solved mainly by cuts, but they don't actually want any specific programs, services, pensions or payments cut by pretty decent margins. Illinois government is that Skinner/Krabappel argument over school funding forever I think part of this is psychological. I don't mean that in a dismissive way, or that taxes are not hurting people or affecting them. But I do think Chicago's consistent preference for consumption taxes and not income taxes, and Illinois' low income pushing to higher property taxes, give people the constants presence of taxation in a way that income tax does not. People mostly just think of what they get paid, after the get the decrease/bump it becomes constant. But with every soda, sales purchase, red light ticket, street cleaning and then mortgage payment it's just ever present, and also regressive. Preckwinkle warning that there'd be cuts without the soda tax, but yet it's about health not revenue. Chicago cries about the unfairness of funding from the state but always chooses to raise it's funding from the poor.

QUOTE (KagakuOtoko @ Jul 6, 2017 -> 02:22 PM) Just a catch all post, what do soxtalkers think would help solve the problems Illinois has? Lots of things. Consolidation of municipalities and townships. Illinois has the most in the country, lots of redundancy and overhead that are not creating better services but are creating bigger costs. Superintendants getting the same salaries whether they are servicing 14 schools or 40. Police reform - CPD never bothered to reconcile with the community after the Burge torture ring and misconduct. Hard to see how trust improves when an institutional issue like that was never addressed. it will continue to haunt with every new incident. It needs a budget Progressive income tax and tax reform that changes funding model and needs to be coupled with a cut in consumption taxes and property taxes. Chicago needs to make affordable housing a priority Pension funding needs to be reworked and pensions themselves need to be renegotiated. Older, declining population and pensions become difficult as the costs grow as they approach retirement unless you have growing younger tax base (which we do not). A hard look at the TIF program which in too many areas becomes a giveaway for alderman and powerful interests and does not serve it's purpose of reinvigorating districts.
